Abstract:
Abstract The article offers an overview of the testimonies about Aelius Aristides’ reception in the didactic context of the late antique schools of rhetoric. After analysing the major issues relating Aristides’ presence in the rhetorical treatises (Hermogenes, Menander rhetor, the ps.-Aristidean ars), the paper focuses in particular on the (lost) commentaries to his mostly widespread works, namely the Panathenaic and the Platonic orations. From the scholia to these speeches it is possible to obtain some information about how these commentaries were, though the annotations which can be attributed with certainty to specific commentators (Metrophanes, Menander, Athanasius, Sopater, and Zosimus) are scarce. In a last section of the paper, some encomia featuring in Libanius’ epistle 1262 and Synesius’ Dio are discussed as far as they resonate with some remarks on Aristides’ style found in scholia, prolegomena, and in rhetorical treatises.

Riassunto Nei Discorsi Platonici Elio Aristide risponde alle critiche che Platone ha mosso contro la retorica nel Gorgia; evitando programmaticamente di trasformare il proprio confronto con Platone in uno scontro frontale, Aristide cerca piuttosto di reinterpretare il testo platonico, di correggerlo, e di impostare la propria difesa riutilizzando espressioni, argomentazioni ed esempi che sono tratti da Platone stesso. Attraverso l'analisi di alcuni casi specifici si cercheranno di chiarire le modalità di questa strategia di “riscrittura” che Aristide mette in atto allo scopo di avviare un'approfondita riconsiderazione del rapporto tra retorica e filosofia.

Abstract:
Three discourses of Aelius Aristides (or. 30–32 K.) set a model of the “young rhetor” built up with opposite instances of dynamism and stasis: on the one hand, the orator confirms his noble origins and education in appearing identical to his biological and cultural fathers; on the other one, as he undergoes a personal evolution, he tries to be better than them. Aristides, he himself a singular figure of master without ‘fathers’, cannot be surpassed, due to the favour which Asclepius has granted to him; however, the “young rhetores” of his time might have a chance to surpass the ‘fathers’ (i.e. rhetores) of classical Athens, provided that they receive the divine gift of rhetorics, which is superior to human arts.

Abstract:
Aristides' own definition of the Sacred Tales as diegesis allows us to read them using narratological categories. The work contains circular or, better, spiral-like time structures. The Fifth discourse is dominated by spatial circularity, coexisting with a paradoxical indifference for the real space itself while Aristides' attention focuses on the oneiric one. It has an argumentative structure based on illustration and accumulation; the altered spatio-temporal axis shows that Asclepius' intervention crosses the boundaries between time and space, dream and reality. The Sacred Tales owe their simple stylistic structure, strikingly different from other discourses of Aristides, to many factors, including their psychic and religious content.

Il secondo ellenismo ha riservato ampio spazio alla dimensione onirica individuale come dimostra l’esperienza onirica di Elio Aristide. Le testimonianze analizzate relative ai culti di Iside e Serapide e di Iuppiter Optimus Maximus Dolichenus mettono in evidenza la predilezione dimostrata dalla divinità nei confronti del fedele visitato in sogno e la legittimazione dello stesso fedele da parte della collettività. Tale condivisione finisce per rafforzare il legame tra la collettività stessa (della quale fa parte il prescelto) e la divinità.

IL TEMPIO DI ADRIANO A CYZICUS E L'ATTEGGIAMENTO ROMANO VERSO LE COSTRUZIONI COLOSSALIPartendo dalPanegirico su Cyzicusdi Elio Aristide, questo articolo esplora l'atteggiamento romano verso le imprese costruttive colossali. La struttura di questo contributo è data prima dall'idea delle Sette Meraviglie del Mondo, che suggerisce come tali imprese costruttive venissero ammirate per la loro grandezza e per il livello di sofisticazione tecnologica, in particolare quando realizzate su una scala che andava ben oltre il regno delle normali esperienze umane. Questo tipo di costruzioni sembrava sfidare la natura ma, allo stesso tempo, dimostrava i limiti dell'ingenuità umana e dava unostatusa coloro per i quali questi lavori erano stati creati. Allo stesso tempo, l'atto della costruzione era visto come un simbolo di esistenza civilizzata, e viene dunque dimostrato come le rappresentazioni sia scritte che pittoriche degli edifici avessero un'importanza speciale. Ciò conduce alia discussione dellamagnificentiae del valore della costruzione per il mecenate romano come contributo alia vita della comunita. L'articolo si conclude con un esame delle implicazioni morali delle costruzioni su grande scala, collocandolo all'interno di un discorso più ampio sulle idee romane conflittuali sul rapporto tra umanità e natura, e sul'antico dibattito sulle origini della civilizzazione e l'idea del progresso umano.

Il presente lavoro consiste in uno studio della tradizione manoscritta dei Discorsi sacri (= DS) di Elio Aristide. Nel primo capitolo si presenta una descrizione dettagliata dei testimoni superstiti (tutti collazionati integralmente), talvolta ridatati su base paleografica; nel secondo si dimostra l’esistenza di un archetipo (O) a monte della trasmissione dell’opera aristidea; nel terzo, quarto e quinto si ricostruiscono gli stemmata codicum delle tradizioni, rispettivamente, di DS 1-2 (bipartita), 3-5 (monopartita) e 6 (monopartita); nel sesto – e ultimo – capitolo si ricostruisce la storia della circolazione dei DS dall’epoca di Areta di Cesarea al tardo XV sec. A completamento e supporto della ricerca sono offerte numerose tavole dei manoscritti esaminati nonché un indice dei codici collazionati.
This research consists in a study of the textual tradition of Aelius Aristides’ Sacred Tales (= ST). The first chapter presents a detailed description of the extant manuscripts (all collated entirely), sometimes re-dated on the basis of palaeographical evidence; the second shows the existence of an archetype for the transmission of the Aristidean oeuvre; the third, fourth and fifth aim to build stemmata codicum for the traditions of ST 1-2 (bipartite), 3-5 (monopartite) and 6 (monopartite), respectively; the sixth – and last – chapter reconstructs the circulation of the ST from the age of Arethas of Caesarea to the late XV century. To complete and support the research, numerous plates of the examined manuscripts are offered along with an index of the collated codices.

Abstract:
Malato di retorica: i "Discorsi sacri" di Elio Aristide Aelius Aristides' Sacred Tales are one of the strangest works in ancient literature. Despite the usual sophistication and complexity of Aristides' style, they appear like a spontaneous writing with little formal elaboration. The main purpose of the research is to investigate the work's stylistic dimension in search of motives of its otherness. The religious dimension, within which the story told underlies, is analyzed in order to identify personal contibutions of the Author. There are several texts involved in the main text, so it is not easy to identify precisely the boundaries: textual analysis can provide some hypothesis about Aristides' choices. The confusion of the narrative levels could answer to a specific intentionality. This work aims also to delve in the the anthropological and cultural scenario in which the author lived in order to understand some dynamics as the proud exhibition of the body. Performance is a keyword in the sophistic movement and rhetoricians are increasingly threatened in their prestige because of the rivalry. It was analyzed also the "bias" for self-praise, so massive in Aristides'corpus, as witnessed by Or. 28. Finally, the epic dimension of the narrative, in which the author presents himself several times as a new Ulysses: the identification with the homeric hero conveys many suggestions of which the author seems to be conscious.

Questa tesi fornisce per la prima volta negli studi traduzione italiana e commento storico della Pro Quattuor del retore d'età antonina Elio Aristide, lunghissima orazione con la quale il suo autore si prefigge l'obiettivo di difendere Pericle, Cimone, Milziade e Temistocle dalle accuse di servilismo loro riservate nel Gorgia platonico. Il lavoro appronta un resoconto puntuale dei riferimenti a eventi politico-militari della storia greca di V e IV sec. a.C. disseminati nel testo e discute la possibilità della valorizzazione in chiave apologetica, da parte del retore, di tradizioni storiografiche, dossografiche, biografiche elleniche per noi perdute ma ancora vitali nel II sec. d.C.: con questa duplice finalità, viene assecondato un versante di ricerca che fino ad oggi non ha trovato riscontro alcuno nella pur striminzita letteratura prodotta su quest'opera, bollata spregiativamente nella critica del '900 come mero gioco letterario fine a sé stesso.
