Abstract:

Kim, Elizabeth Min Hee. "The voice of the voiceless : reading Luke 1:46-55 in the context of HIV/AIDS in response to Elisabeth Schüssler Fiorenza’s feminist theology." Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/85677.

Abstract:
Thesis (MTh)--Stellenbosch University, 2013.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: A biblical truth tends to function in the politics of meaning formation, where cultural norms and values of society direct a biblical reading, which in turn further affirms and constructs social ideals. Specific to this study is the problem of the patriarchal framework that has shaped the prophetic reading of the Magnificat (Luke 1:46-55). Feminist scholars problematize patriarchal characteristics of the text and question religious formulations of gender norms that create unequal gender relations in society. This study presents a prophetic-critical reading of the Magnificat in light of the rhetorical functions of the text. To this end, chapter two evaluates Elisabeth Schüssler Fiorenza‘s theories of feminist praxis to sharpen a reading lens for the exegetical chapter which follows. In chapter three, it illustrates a propagandistic character of the text, intended by the implied author, in order to free the text from a patriarchal reading. Chapter four illustrates the rhetorical functions of the text in a new contemporary context of HIV/AIDS in South Africa. This is accomplished by means of a variety of social, political, economic and religious systems of meaning formation, in the form of a letter, hypothetically addressed to a contemporary benefactor, Queen Elizabeth II.

Abstract:

Abstract:
AbstractOn Thursday, February 27, 2020, during a live broadcast on television, Minister Bruno Bruin is handed a note saying that it has just been confirmed that a patient with the coronavirus has been identified in the Netherlands. Allegedly, it concerns a man who is placed in isolation in the Elisabeth-Tweesteden hospital in Tilburg. This is where the story of our book starts. The hospital mentioned by the minister is hardly a kilometer away from our university, Tilburg University. Things now start to develop quickly. During several weeks, the region of Tilburg becomes the “Corona Capital” of the Netherlands in terms of the number of people infected. On March 18, Minister Bruno Bruins collapses due to exhaustion during a debate in the Government’s House of Representatives. The following day, he resigns and soon after is temporarily replaced by a politician of a party that is not part of the current political coalition. Two days earlier, the country had gone into a lockdown after a historical speech of Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte.

Abstract:
Significant challenges and interactions facing Hildegard of Bingen in her new life at Rupertsberg are the subject of this chapter. The departure and subsequent death of her favorite disciple, Richardis von Stade, was a painful and humiliating loss. A new scriptorium enabled the dissemination of Hildegard’s creations. Her nuns’ use of golden crowns, jewelry, and veils was criticized by Canoness Tenxwind of Andernach but justified by Hildegard; the chapter explores the appearance of these elements in Hildegard’s output. Her interaction with Elisabeth of Schönau is connected to Hildegard’s extensive set of compositions about St. Ursula and her 11,000 Virgins. Finally, in 1158 Hildegard gained financial independence from Disibodenberg.

Abstract:
This chapter explains how SIL linguists Catherine Peeke and Rosi Jung accomplished one of the main goals of missionaries among the Waorani: the translation of the New Testament into Wao tededo. Rachel Saint and Dayomæ began the informal translation of Bible stories as early as 1957. Translation work was not Saint’s strength, and over time Dayomæ lost enthusiasm, so when Peeke and Jung were assigned the task in 1979, only the Gospel of Mark, the Book of Acts, other verses and short passages, and some Old Testament stories had been translated. With help from Waorani translation assistants, Peeke and Jung worked from 1982 to 1992 to finish the Wao New Testament, which was dedicated in June 1992. Despite this accomplishment, the legend of Wao Christianity as told in North America continued to credit Saint, Dayomæ, and Elisabeth Elliot for the translation.
