Abstract:
Across Australia and other developed nations, morbidity and mortality follows a socioeconomic gradient whereby the lowest socioeconomic groups experience the poorest health. The dietary practices of low socioeconomic groups, which are comparatively less consistent with dietary recommendations, have been thought to contribute to the excess morbidity and mortality observed among low socioeconomic groups, although this phenomenon is not well understood. Using a socioecological framework, this thesis examines whether the local food retail environment and confidence to cook contribute to socioeconomic differences in fruit and vegetable purchasing. To achieve this, four quantitative analyses of data from two main sources were conducted. The food retail environment was examined via secondary analysis of the Brisbane Food Study (BFS) and confidence to cook was examined in a cross-sectional study designed and carried out by the author. The first three manuscripts were based on findings from the BFS. Briefly, the BFS was a multilevel cross-sectional study, designed to examine determinants of inequalities, that was conducted in Brisbane in the year 2000. A stratified random sample was taken of 50 small areas (census collection districts, CCDs) and 1003 residents who usually shopped for their households were interviewed face-to-face using a schedule that included a measure of fruit and vegetable purchasing and three socioeconomic markers: education, occupation and gross household income. The purchasing measure was based on how often (never, rarely, sometimes nearly always or always) participants bought common fruits and vegetables for their households in fresh or frozen form, when in season. Food shops within a 2.5 km radius of the CCDs in which survey respondents lived were identified and audited to determine their location, type, their opening hours, and their price and availability of a list of food items. The first publication demonstrated there was minimal to no difference in the availability of supermarkets, greengrocers and convenience stores between areas that were most and least disadvantaged, in terms of the number of shops, distance to the nearest shop, or opening hours. Similarly, the second publication showed the most disadvantaged and least disadvantaged areas had no large or significant difference in the price and availability of fruits and vegetables within supermarkets, greengrocers and convenience stores, but small differences were consistently apparent, such that on average, low socioeconomic areas had lower prices but also lesser availability than more advantaged areas. The third submitted manuscript presents results of multilevel logistic regression analyses of the BFS data. While there were some associations between environmental characteristics and fruit and vegetable purchasing, environmental characteristics did not mediate socioeconomic differences in purchasing the fruit and vegetable items since there was no substantial socioeconomic patterning of the price or availability of fruits and vegetables. The fourth submitted manuscript was based on the cross-sectional study of cooking skills. A stratified random sample of six CCDs in Brisbane was taken and 990 household members ‘mostly responsible’ for preparing food were invited to participate. A final response rate of 43% was achieved. Data were collected via a self-completed questionnaire, which covered household demographics, vegetable purchasing (using the same measure employed in the BFS for continuity), confidence to prepare these same vegetables, and confidence to cook vegetables using ten cooking techniques. Respondents were asked to indicate how confident they felt (ranging from not at all- to very- confident) to prepare each vegetable, and to use each technique. This fourth study found respondents with low education and low household income had significantly lower confidence to cook than their higher socioeconomic counterparts, and lower confidence to cook was in turn associated with less household vegetable purchasing. Collectively, the four manuscripts comprising this thesis provide an understanding of the contribution of food accessibility, affordability and cooking skills to socioeconomic differences in fruit and vegetable purchasing, within a socioecological framework. The evidence provided by this thesis is consistent with a contributory role of confidence to cook in socioeconomic differences in fruit and vegetable purchasing, but is not definitive. Additional research is necessary before promoting cooking skills to improve population nutrition or reduce nutritional inequalities. An area potentially useful to examine would be how cooking skills integrate with psychosocial correlates of food and nutrition, and socioeconomic position. For example, whether improvement of cooking skills can generate interest and knowledge, and improve dietary behaviours, and whether a lack of interest in food and nutrition contributes to a lack of both fruit and vegetable consumption and cooking skills. This thesis has demonstrated that an inequitably distributed food retail environment probably does not contribute to socioeconomic variation in fruit and vegetable purchasing, at least in contemporary Brisbane, Australia. Findings are unlikely to apply to other time periods, rural and regional settings, and perhaps other Australian cities as residential and retail development, and the supply and pricing of produce vary substantially across these dimensions. Overall, the main implication for public health is that interventions targeting the food supply in terms of ensuring greater provision of shops, or altering the available food and prices in shops may not necessarily carry a great benefit, at least in major cities similar to Brisbane. Future studies of equitable food access may need to look beyond mapping the distribution of shops and prices, perhaps to more personal and subjective facets of accessibility and affordability that incorporate individuals’ perceptions and ability to access and pay for foods.

Abstract:
Natural products are a potent reservoir of bioactive compounds, but their exploration is often hampered by the limited quantities available from natural sources. Total synthesis of natural products alleviates this restraint, and necessitates development of new chemistry to grant access to complex structures. In this thesis, we develop synthetic routes toward two quinoid natural products. Taiwaniaquinone G is a representative trans-configured taiwaniaquinoid, synthetically underrepresented compared to cis-configured taiwaniaquinoids, isolated from the bark of the endangered tree Taiwania cryptomeriodes. We developed a polyene cyclisation strategy which would form the tricyclic core in a single step from a linear precursor, but it proceeded cis-selectively instead of the expected trans-selectivity. DFT calculations were performed, and the cis-configured intermediate was found to be stabilised hyperconjugatively. Several strategies were explored to overcome this stereochemical preference, but ultimately the synthesis was continued towards the cis-configured 5-epi-taiwaniaquinone G, which was synthesised in 8 steps and 4.2% overall yield, the shortest synthesis to date. Elisabethin A is a minor metabolite isolated from the Caribbean sea whip Pseudopterogorgia elisabethae, and several groups have attempted its synthesis due to its unique ring structure. We review evidence that a reported total synthesis was unsuccessful, and provide computational support for the Diels-Alder product proposals of Zanoni et al. We explore a route to elisabethin A which would circumvent problems experienced in the terminal epimerisation step by Rawal et al. using a radical leaving group to invert the stereochemistry at the required tertiary carbon centre. A synthesis of the aryl core and pendant tail fragments was completed. Several strategies are explored to unite the precursor fragments. Model systems are investigated for our proposed Claisen rearrangement and radical inversion strategies.

Deloney, en corrigeant par une vision plus humaniste, sans negiger les criteres de l'objectivite, une critique souvent severe, fragmentaire, superficielle. La figure du "balletter" est evoquee, sur un arriereplan litteraire et social, montrant les voies difficiles d'une litterature digne d'attention. La ballade de deloney est presentee comme florilege exceptionnel. On l'etudie en relation avec les poemes et musiques du temps, recherchant le vouvement qui chez deloney limite l'oralite au profit de formes ecrites; l'on montre les impulsions contraires, dont l'interet est de reveler de facon concrete la confection d'une poesie. L'analyse des romans fait ressortir la rencontre entre le "jestbook" et le romanesque courtois, le resultat etant un romanesque du quotidien lie a la vie de l'artisan, contexte democratise, aux heros bourgeois ou ordinaires. L'inflechissement permet d'entrevoir quelques traits d'une tendance "realiste". La qualite scenique de l'ecriture retient aussi l'attention. Deloney, a writer who never had his due. A humanistic approach aims at complementing objective criteria. A tentative sketch of the "ballad-maker" sets him on the literary and social background; it enhances the author's merit in his attempt at noteworthy literature. A study of the diversified handling of the ballad shows how the transition from ballad-making to true poetry is achieved. The personal case is treated in relation to the contemporary poetical context. Special interest is found in the illustration of concrete poetic "workmanship". The analysis of the movels shows how the merging of jestbook tradition and courtois romance evolves into a novel of daily life, linked to the artisan's concerns, depicting bourgeois or ordinary heroes. Abstract:
This master thesis is about one of the first female in the Swedish Parliament, Elisabeth Tamm (1880–1958), and her political articles in the magazine Tidevarvet. The aim of this study is to find similarities with Tamm’s political thoughts with the Ecofeministic theory. Due to women’s right to vote 1919 women citizenship was in a political debate. Tamm was one of many speakers and she combine the question with the Swedish agriculture and farming. Ecofeminism generally believe that women and nature are subordinate by the capitalist, patriarchal and Western society. This master thesis examine the degree to which Tamm’s political view coincides with the Ecofeministic perspective. The results which have been obtained through this study are that Tamm share a lot of the Ecofeministic view points and was before her time with these ideas. She also has the same belief concerning women and nature subjugation. The main difference between Ecofeminism and Tamm is the view of nature; Ecofeminism perceive nature as its own subject and not for human to control while Tamm view nature as something which human shall cultivate and cherish for future generations.   This study gives contribution to new knowledge for different interested parties. Ecofeminism is relatively new in science and I hope this conducted thesis has usability and will open up for future research and learn people of today more about our idea of nature and gender.

Abstract:
With the enlightenment thought in the 18th century, progress of man’s development grew to something better. Throughout this era all the way to the 19th century, the thought that the human kind can develop and evolve was every man’s pursue. It was believed that with the help of education, deaf and blind people could be given a chance for a normal set of life. That given the right tools they could be removed from the outline of society and brought into the social world. Throughout this time-period there where two different active ways of education that inspired educationalists in Europe and America. The German school, which focused on the development and use of speech and the French school which taught and focused on the visual language, i.e. sign language. This report puts interest in the development of the Swedish teacher Elisabeth Nordin’s chosen education system and its results. It was essential to study the background of education and care for the deaf and blind, in order to understand its progress. Furthermore, it gives a comparison of Sweden’s development in this area. Presenting a result of which the system of education for deaf and blind has gone from crippling them, to enchanting them a life of independency.

I denna uppsats undersöks hur sorg skapas och uttrycks i diktsamlingarna Det här är hjärtat av Bodil Malmsten och Nattliga samtal av Elisabeth Rynell. Utifrån en teori om att känslor skapas i en kontakt mellan subjekt och objekt framgår det i undersökningen att diktjagen i respektive diktsamling uttrycker och hanterar sorgen på olika sätt. Diktjaget i Det här är hjärtat är statiskt och kommer aldrig ur sorgen medan diktjaget i Nattliga samtal är dynamiskt och går vidare ur sorgen.<br>This essay examines how grief is created and expressed in the poetry collections Det här är hjärtat by Bodil Malmsten and Nattliga samtal by Elisabeth Rynell. Based on a theory that emotions are created in a contact between subject and object, it appears in the survey that narrator in each collection of poems expressing and handles grief differently. The narrator in Det här är hjärtat is static and will never come out of grief while the narrator in Nattliga samtal is dynamic and moves on from sorrow.

Abstract:
Bakgrund: Yttrandefriheten blir ofta ett ämne för debatt då någon yttrar en åsikt som är kontroversiell eller ouppskattad. Detta blev fallet 1998 då konstnären Elisabeth Ohlsons fotografiska utställning Ecce Homo hade vernissage i Stockholm. Utställningen innehöll gestaltningar av olika situationer ur Nya Testamentet där Jesus porträtterades av olika homosexuella män som i sin tur omgavs av andra homo-, bi- och transsexuella som föreställde bland annat apostlarna och Jesus mor Maria. I mars 2010 hamnade konstnären Lars Vilks åter i hetluften, när det stod klart att ett flertal olika personer gripits utomlands för planer på att mörda honom. Anledningen till att Vilks var målet för attentatet var hans teckning av Muhammed som rondellhund, då det inom islam är förbjudet att avbilda profeten Muhammed. Båda konstnärer utsattes för hot från människor som menade att man inte får ta sig friheten att behandla religiösa symboler hur man vill. Detta ledde till debatter om både konstverken i sig samt var gränsen för yttrandefrihet går inom konsten. Frågeställningar: Målet med denna uppsats är att undersöka debatterna angående Ecce Homo och Muhammedbilden så som de har framställts i Dagens Nyheter, för att på så sätt urskilja eventuella skillnader mellan samtalen angående synsättet på yttrandefrihet. Frågeställningen är alltså: Har det skett någon förändring i debatten om yttrandefrihet mellan 1998 och 2010, att döma av hur yttrandefriheten konstruerades i debatten om Ecce Homo respektive Muhammedbilden? Metod: Analysen av sammanlagt tio debatt- och kulturartiklar har utförts med hjälp av diskursanalys, där Torsten Thuréns verktyg för textnära analys ur "Tanken, språket och verkligheten" har fungerat som stöd. Slutsats: Den ursprungliga frågeställningen om det har skett någon förändring i debatten mellan 1998 och 2010 är inte helt okomplicerad att besvara, då analysen visade att samtalet om Ecce Homo inte behandlade yttrandefrihet lika konkret som samtalet om Muhammedbilden. De analyserade artiklarna om Ecce Homo handlade istället till störst del om homosexuellas rättigheter i kyrkan och samhället. Däremot kan man se exempel på stöd för yttrandefriheten i form av att debattörerna önskar se ett utökat och öppnare samtal om homosexuellas rättigheter och i förlängningen att homosexuellas rättigheter ska vara jämställda heterosexuellas. I debatten om Muhammedbilden å andra sidan, behandlar samtalet nästintill uteslutande yttrandefriheten. Yttrandefriheten konstrueras som en nödvändig, grundläggande rättighet som inte får inskränkas till följd av hot från odemokratiska krafter. Fyra av fem artikelförfattare tar klart ställning för yttrandefriheten medan den femte diskuterar ämnet och begreppet yttrandefrihet i sig, utan att i klartext ta ställning för eller emot Lars Vilks konstverk. Slutsatsen blir därmed att debatterna blir komplicerade att jämföra med varandra på grund av mängden olika diskurser som debatterna rör sig inom, samt att samtalet om Muhammedbilden rönte en betydligt häftigare, explicit debatt om yttrandefrihet än vad Ecce Homo (dock implicit) gjorde.Nyckelord: Lars Vilks, Elisabeth Ohlson, Ecce Homo, diskursanalys, yttrandefrihet
