John Walton’s book on the social history of Lancashire from the accession of Elizabeth I to the outbreak of the Second World War appeared 35 years ago. It was a remarkable but not entirely uncontroversial achievement, large in scope and scale, and very personal in its character and approach. Curiously, it was not reviewed in this journal. Now, three and half decades later, this paper offers a retrospective assessment of a volume which was described by one reviewer at the time as ‘the best history of Lancashire to be written so far’.

Statement of the problem. Musical semantics is directly related to the phenomenon of musical content – modeling, understanding and generalization of the events of a musical work. The semantic approach is based on the study of the content of the elements of the musical language. Turning to paired images embodies a new perspective on the classification of operatic characters. The lack of research on this issue determines the scientific novelty and relevance of the chosen topic. The work of R. Wagner is indicative of the phenomenon of paired images. Abstract: In the novels Elizabeth Costello, Slow Man , and Life & Times of Michael K , J.M. Coetzee fashions an ethical mode of "writing photographs" rather than "writing about photographs" via the technique of ekphrasis to recreate in prose several vivid and often unsettling images. The use of ekphrasis comes with unique ethical imperatives. Close analysis enables an exploration into

Despite its phenomenal success, and in some cases because of it, J. K. Rowling's Harry Potter series has provoked unease in some readers on both aesthetic and ideological grounds. This essay seeks to supplement the important contribution of scholars like John Pennington, Suman Gupta, Elizabeth Teare, Jack Zipes, Elaine Ostry and Michael Ostling by foregrounding what I see as a still under-examined issue: Rowling's decision not to install her wizards and witches in a distinct secondary world. I argue for a systematic connection between this key narratological option and Rowling's conflicted ide

This paper analyses wind speed characteristics and wind power potential of Port Elizabeth using statistical Weibull parameters. A measured 5–minute time series average wind speed over a period of 5 years (2005 - 2009) was obtained from the South African Weather Service (SAWS). The results show that the shape parameter (k) ranges from 1.319 in April 2006 to 2.107 in November 2009, while the scale parameter (c) varies from 3.983m/s in May 2008 to 7.390 in November 2009.The average wind power density is highest during Spring (September–October), 256.505W/m2 and lowest during Autumn (April-May), 1

The involvement of the private sector is critical for the conservation and recovery of many species, but landowners’ fears that increased management restrictions could keep them from enjoying their land can present a challenge to securing their trust and assistance in conservation efforts. A Safe Harbor Agreement is a regulatory assurance that removes the risk of additional regulation in the future and encourages landowners to maintain important habitat on their lands. The verbal representation of this concept is presented in terms of nucleus and periphery level. A comparison of these means makes it possible to identify similarities and differences in the consciousness of the collective and the individual. The examples for the analysis were selected from both original and translated texts. Along with study of the language picture of the world , the concept “justice” will be studied from li
