If today's society is inarticulate, then how can eloquence and articulateness be reintroduced as staples of a successful person in today's society? The answer is easy - through the study of rhetoric. Abstract:
AbstractWe report herein the case of a 41-year-old man operated on for a small inferior parietal lobule ganglioglioma with a sleep-awake-sleep protocol and language mapping to avoid major speech disorders. Postoperatively, however, writing disturbance was characterized by persistent graphemic errors that lasted for about 8 months. The topic is discussed in light of recent literature, exploring the possible relationship between writing difficulties and disconnections produced by a combination of resecting supramarginal gyrus components and interrupting arcuate fasciculus fibers. Awake mapping of eloquent structures is typically done using direct brain stimulation to maximize the extent of the resection while minimizing permanent neurological deficits. However, most intraoperative language tests focus on language skills such as oral and reading skills. Therefore, the detection of dysgraphia requires a high degree of attention from the surgical team and direct examination intra-and perioperatively. To this end, employing an intraoperative writing test during awake surgery may be considered. Advances in this field may aid in increasing the accuracy during parenchymal dissections, influencing the extent of the resection, improving the patient’s functional prognosis and long-term quality of life.

Abstract:
‘‘Why Would Anyone be Interested in my Old Aunt Teresa?’: Illuminating Teresa Deevy’s Legacy’ chronicles Eileen Kearney’s experiences as a young researcher in the 1980s interested in Irish theatre studies and Irish women playwrights and how her determination to light up the shadows of Irish theatre history resulted in a life-long commitment to feminist theatre scholarship that focused on the work of Teresa Deevy. The chapter exemplifies how the tenacity and generosity of a network of researchers can create and progress a trail that leads to important discoveries and recovery of neglected work. The testament that Kearney eloquently pays to the friendship, generosity, and collegiality of Seán Dunne and his family and John Jordan brings to the fore the value of research collaboration and conveys the energy, dynamism, and undaunted persistence that is also characteristic of Deevy’s attitude towards her work, her friendships, and her professional networks. The result is an essay that negotiates the liminal space between academic formality, intellectual rigour, and accessibility, and is relevant to scholars of Irish theatre, researchers at all stages of their career, feminist scholars, and scholars of Irish theatre history.

AbstractMinister of Health Enoch Powell’s Hospital Plan for England and Wales (1962) is a familiar landmark in twentieth-century psychiatry.1 In 1961 Powell’s ‘water tower’ speech to the National Association of Mental Health eloquently launches the ideas contained within the plan.2 It is an evocative portrayal of asylums as grand, obsolete monuments to Victorian ideas of mental-health care. There is much historiographical focus upon how the plan augurs the scaling back of mental inpatient provision, but much less on how it signals the broader uptake of a new model of integration between psychiatry and general medicine. This model, based upon the establishment of psychiatric units in district general hospitals (DGHs), involves a more intimate connection between general hospitals and psychiatry than do observation wards. The DGH psychiatric units promoted by the plan undercut the progressive status and bridging function of the observation ward.

Abstract The Biographia Literaria represents Coleridge’s fullest response to questions about the nature of identity, the nature of imagination, and the nature of the relationship between one man’s voice and another’s. Such questions had been critical seventeen years before, when he and Wordsworth still worked together, and for Coleridge they were still urgent; but Wordsworth no longer cared what his former friend thought about it all. Had Wordsworth had the patience to read the great unwieldy mess of a book that straggled into print so long after their friendship had ended, he might not have known what he was looking at. For the Biographia’s method-if it can be called that-is indirect, even hysterical: its diseases are more eloquent than its arguments.

On July 8, 1896, at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, William Jennings Bryan gave one of the most memorable political addresses in American history. Dubbed the “Cross of Gold” Speech because of its vivid image of crucifying humankind upon a golden cross, the oration propelled Bryan to the Democratic nomination for president of the United States. In the speech, Bryan articulated the feelings of Americans from the South and West who felt that the currency system and its effects had injured their financial and cultural interests. These sections saw a more flexible monetary system and some degree of inflation as a cure for the economic ills that afflicted farmers, miners, and industrial workers. Bryan captured their grievances and gave them eloquent expression in his “Cross of Gold” Speech.
