L'émaillerie peinte de Limoges connaît d'importantes modifications iconographiques des années 1540 aux années 1580 : des thèmes mythologiques et profanes apparaissent dans un art jusque là exclusivement religieux, tandis que les scènes bibliques sont renouvelées par une imagerie vétérotestamentaire. Cette évolution est associée au contexte politique et religieux, marqué par l'ascension de la Réforme en France et l'élaboration d'une réponse monarchique à la présence schismatique de la nouvelle foi. Le thème de la violence est reconnu comme étant le pivot à partir duquel se formulent différentes alternatives afin de replacer le royaume dans un ordre de paix. Si l'étude doit être étendue à l'échelle du pays, le contexte historique immédiat de la création émaillée - la sphère locale de Limoges au temps des guerres de Religion - fournit aussi des éléments propres à enrichir l'interprétation. Les images émaillées, conduisant à emprunter différentes directions interprétatives selon les groupes religieux en présence, se révèlent polysémiques, oscillant entre évangélisme et Réforme
This research aims to understand the iconographical evolution of 16th century Limoges painted enamels from the 1540s to the 1580s. During this period, mythological and profane themes appear in what had previously been an exclusively religious art. Concurrently, religious scenes shift their focus to concentrate on Old Testament imagery. This study links the diffusion of the new images with the political and religious circumstances of their creation, demonstrating both the ascension of the Reformation in France and the formulation of a royal response to the schismatic presence of new faiths. The investigative method adopted is structured around the theme of violence and its various alternatives to reestablish peace. Extending the analysis to a national level provides meaningful elements proper to refining the interpretation and reveals the immediate historical context of the enamels' creation, namely the local sphere of Limoges during the religious wars. Furthermore, by gathering ideas from various intellectual and religious spheres and allowing the analysis to proceed in different directions the enameled images become equivocal, oscillating between evangelism and Reformation
