Torres, Ospina Sara. "Uncovering the Role of Community Health Worker/Lay Health Worker Programs in Addressing Health Equity for Immigrant and Refugee Women in Canada: An Instrumental and Embedded Qualitative Case Study." Thèse, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/23753.

Abstract:
“Why do immigrants and refugees need community health workers/lay health workers (CHWs) if Canada already has a universal health care system?” Abundant evidence demonstrates that despite the universality of our health care system marginalized populations, including immigrants and refugees, experience barriers to accessing the health system. Evidence on the role of CHWs facilitating access is both lacking and urgently needed. This dissertation contributes to this evidence by providing a thick description and thorough analytical exploration of a CHW model, in Edmonton, Canada. Specifically, I examine the activities of the Multicultural Health Brokers Co-operative (MCHB Co-op) and its Multicultural Health Brokers from 1992 to 2011 as well as the relationship they have with Alberta Health Services (AHS) Edmonton Zone Public Health. The research for this study is based on an instrumental and embedded qualitative case study design. The case is the MCHB Co-op, an independently-run multicultural health worker co-operative, which contracts with health and social services providers in Edmonton to offer linguistically- and culturally-appropriate services to marginalized immigrant and refugee women and their families. The two embedded mini-cases are two programs of the MCHB Co-op: Perinatal Outreach and Health for Two, which are the raison d’être for a sustained partnership between the MCHB Co-op and AHS. The phenomenon under study is the Multicultural Health Brokers’ practice. I triangulate multiple methods (research strategies and data sources), including 46 days of participant and direct observation, 44 in-depth interviews (with Multicultural Health Brokers, mentors, women using the programs, health professionals and outsiders who knew of the work of the MCHB Co-op and Multicultural Health Brokers), and document review and analysis of policy documents, yearly reports, training manuals, educational materials as well as quantitative analysis of the Health Brokers’ 3,442 client caseload database. In addition, data include my field notes of both descriptive and analytical reflections taken throughout the onsite research. I also triangulate various theoretical frameworks to explore how historically specific social structures, economic relationships, and ideological assumptions serve to create and reinforce the conditions that give rise to the need for CHWs, and the factors that aid or hinder their ability to facilitate marginalized populations’ access to health and social services. Findings reveal that Multicultural Health Brokers facilitate access to health and social services as well as foster community capacity building in order to address settlement, adaptation, and integration of immigrant and refugee women and their families into Canadian society. Findings also demonstrate that the Multicultural Health Broker model is an example of collaboration between community-based organizations and local systems in targeting health equity for marginalized populations; in particular, in perinatal health and violence against women. A major problem these workers face is they provide important services as part of Canada’s health human resources workforce, but their contributions are often not recognized as such. The triangulation of methods and theory provides empirical and theoretical understanding of the Multicultural Health Brokers’ contribution to immigrant and refugee women and their families’ feminist urban citizenship.

Abstract:
The last few decades' development of technology has greatly affected healthcare. The implementation of technology in healthcare has advanced and improved it immensely, but it has also brought a new level of complexity. One of the modern issues introduced to healthcare is the traceability of medical devices. The main reason why traceability is becoming a more important matter in regards to healthcare is because of patient safety. Patient safety is one of the greatest priorities in healthcare but is constantly challenged by new innovations. Enabling traceability of medical devices is a part of the process of ensuring patient safety. The aim of this master thesis project was to research how medical devices used in surgeries are traced and how the routine can be improved. The idea of this thesis was based on the application of two new regulations, Regulation (EU) 745/2017 and Regulation (EU) 746/2017, both with the purpose of improving traceability. Qualitative methods such as observations, surveys, and interviews were used for this project. To gain multiple perspectives on the issue, different target groups were defined for the collection of data. The qualitative data was then analysed and conclusions based on the data could be drawn. The results of this project showed that the current traceability routine is lacking and that there is a lot of potential for improvements. The computer systems that manages information regarding medical devices can enable proper traceability if combined with other systems. Improvements of features in the systems are suggested, as well as an idea of an integrated system that combines functionalities of other software. Some of the project's challenges are discussed and suggestions for how to further develop the research are presented.

Abstract:
In this case study a secondary school and its art education is studied. Pupils and the art teacher are interviewed and observations are made in school and out of school. The study is based on socio-cultural theory, media ecology and semiotics. In this school manual and digital media each share about 50 percent of the time available for art. It is shown that it is the teaching method – the change from a dialogic to a multivoiced method – that enables the embedded use of digital media. Arguments for digital media in art are that they are time-saving, promote aesthetic aspects and will put an end to the process of traditional education where the teacher is reduced to being a conveyor of information. The computer lab is no option for an embedded art education. On monitors and in exhibitions pupils are surrounded by other pupils´ works, which promotes a desire among them to improve their creativity, and a local art culture is developed in a cumulative process.

Abstract:
Control applications are used in almost all scientific domains and are subject to timing constraints. Moreover, different applications can run on the same platform which leads to even more complex timing behaviors. However, some of the timing issues are not always considered in the implementation of such applications, and this can make the system fail. In this thesis, the timing issues are considered, i.e., the problem of non-constant delay in the control of an inverted pendulum with a real-time kernel running on an ATmega328p micro-controller. The study shows that control performance is affected by this problem. In addition, the thesis, reports the adaptation of an existing real-time kernel based on an EDF (Earliest Deadline First) scheduling policy, to the architecture of the ATmega328p. Moreover, the new approach of a server-based kernel is implemented in this thesis, still on the same Atmel micro-controller.

Jones, Amber. "A Case Study of Leadership Supports of Job-Embedded Professional Development." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2019. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc1609148/.

Full text
Abstract:
Professional development is a critical part of school improvement and enhancing teacher quality; yet there is limited literature about how principals design and lead effective professional development systems. The research activities in this qualitative single case study explored the leadership practices at one successful school implementing job-embedded professional development. A conceptual framework relating Hallinger's leadership for learning construct to professional development helped frame the research. Collected data included participant interviews, a focus group interview, observations, and relevant document analysis. These data were analyzed using a general inductive method to identify the prevailing leadership characteristics. The major themes that emerged during analysis were: (a) vision and goals, (b) high expectations, (c) structures and resources, (d) communication, (e) monitoring progress and providing recognition, (f) focused and ongoing professional development, (g) differentiated professional development, (h) trust and professionalism, (i) culture of learning and growth, (j) building capacity, and (k) collaboration. These themes aligned well with the initial conceptual framework. These findings support the concept that leadership for learning may have implications for school leaders trying to implement effective job-embedded professional development.

Abstract:
There has been a rekindling of interest in primary dental care research. However, there has been little investigation of the factors affecting these studies. This thesis examines primary dental care research pragmatically and from the dentists perspective. The Pulpotomy Study was undertaken In the northwest of England as a preliminary, prospective, pragmatic, longitudinal, multi-centred, cohort study in primary dental care. Forty primary care dentists undertook 334 pulpotomies In 316 participants on symptomatic primary molar teeth using Caustinerf Deciduous and/or Creosote BP. Pulpotomies were successful at reducing pain and sepsis. Over five years 77.3% of pulpotomies were successful. Pulpotomies were considered a suitable method of managing the child with pain and sepsis.

Abstract:
Background. Unstable and unpredictable tests, herein referred to as flaky tests, pose a serious challenge to systems in the production environment. If a device is not tested thoroughly, it will be sent back for retesting from the production centers, which is an expensive affair. Removing flaky tests involves detecting the flaky tests, finding the causes of flakiness and finally the elimination of flakiness. The existing literature provides information on causes and elimination techniques of flakiness for software systems. All of these are studied thoroughly, and support is taken from interviews to understand they are applicable in the context of embedded systems. Objectives. The primary objective is to identify causes of flakiness in a device under test and also techniques for eliminating flakiness. Methods. In this paper, we applied a literature review to find the current state-of-art of flakiness. A case study is selected to address the objectives of the study. Interviews and observations carried out to collect data. Data analysis performed using a directed content analysis method. Results. Observations resulted in eliminating 4 causes of flakiness in embedded systems. Interview results in finding 4 elimination techniques which were not found in the literature. Conclusions. Causes and Elimination techniques for the domain of embedded systems are identified. Knowledge translation between the domains was carried out effectively.

Abstract:
The following satírical case study of a government supportcd program of research was conceived during a concert by a weil-known pianist. In the region in which the concert was being given, there was no hall suitable for a concert of such quality. The performance was given in a large athletic arena, despite the accoustical characteristics of such a facility. As the author tried to ignore the sounds and listen to the music, he reflected on other incongruities. Eventually ghosts of past research supported by public funds began to haunt hirn. The fictitious story that follows is partly a summation of those disharmonic thoutghts, and is considered in terms of devclopment of public policy for research support by gobernmental agencies in a democracy. lt is the responsibility of researchers and scholars in a democracy to educate the public about the need to support high quality research activitíes. When this responsibility is not met, political issues can become more ímportant in determining research priorities than comrnon sense or scientific neccssity.

Abstract:
Agile methods have been widely implemented in the industry while teaching these methods is a substantial part of Computer Science and Engineering program curricula. Evidencedriven data of agile practices, methods, and tools have been extracted based on empirical studies with students, however, there is an important need for more anecdotal evidence to confirm these findings. In order to fill this gap, this paper explores the perceptions and the applicability of the Scrum Framework in a student research team in an industrial context. Empirical data have been gathered through interviews with the case study participants combined with a survey. The analysis reveals that student experiences are mainly positive and that they can easily grasp the benefits of Scrum Framework. The challenges of implementing Scrum in such a setting mainly concern the balance between coach and self-organization, formulating accurate user stories when researching, finding the most suitable estimation method, as well as planning when conducting research. The empirical findings may potentially be extrapolated in student scrum teams or even in industrial settings. Finally, this research paper should encourage other researchers to investigate the adoption of Scrum in a student setting.

Abstract:
This dissertation reports on a case study investigation of the organisational setting of the Kaohsiung Harbour Bureau (KHB) in Taiwan. It reports on my methodological contribution in doing my study in a particular way, namely, by making use of my position in the Harbour to help develop multi-views in relation to the future. I tried not to abuse my working position as a former manager of warehousing and my current position as a researcher to make definite recommendations for action~ but I wanted to create some options for thinking about future plans for privatisation of port activities through involving less power distance than is normally associated with planning in the Harbour. My study was not carried out by trying to operate in a neutral fashion. For instance, I clearly had an own involvement in raising questions in the interviews (individual and group) with participants and in the way I developed further questions during interviews and also carried information across interviews. I also tried to create some discussion on important issues that created high emotional responses for participants. I call my case study research, which was organised to be active in the hope to be of some benefit to participants, a special kind of case study. I reflect on the roles I played in the special case study in the dissertation. The dissertation also reports on the theoretical contribution that I think I have made in relation to some themes arising from the case study (cross-cultural learning, politics and development, and the relevance of systems thinking). It gives details on how these themes could be explored with reference to the case. I discuss the themes in relation to wider literature on the topics and I add my ideas.

Abstract:
This embedded case study explored the alignments between division benchmark intents and practices with regard to benchmark assessments and elementary school teachers’ intents and practices. Utilizing the NIRN implementation framework and the embedded case study framework, this study sought to determine what variables are necessary to implement and maintain an effective benchmark assessment system. This study addressed the following research questions: (1) How do teachers describe their intent in making use of the benchmark assessment system? (2) How do teachers describe their practices of making formative use of the benchmark assessment system? (3) What do teachers describe as the perceived outcomes of the benchmark assessment system? (4) What are the similarities and differences between division intent and design of the benchmark assessment system and teacher intent and practices? (5) How competent do teachers feel themselves to be to make use of the benchmark assessment system to progress student learning? (6) How are teachers’ responses similar and/or different relative to the state accreditation status of their respective schools?

Abstract:
Embedded systems are widely used in critical situations and hence, are targets for malicious users. Researchers have demonstrated successful attacks against embedded systems used in power grids, modern cars, and medical devices. Hence, it is imperative to develop techniques to improve security of these devices. However, embedded devices have constraints (such as limited memory capacity) that make building security mechanisms for them challenging. In this thesis, we formulate building Intrusion Detection System (IDS) for embedded systems as an optimization problem. We develop algorithms that, given the set of the security properties of the system and the invariants that verify those properties, build an IDS that maximizes the coverage for the security properties, with respect to the available memory. This allows our IDS to be applicable to a wide range of embedded devices with di erent memory capacities. Furthermore, we develop techniques to analyze security of both design and implementation of embedded systems. Given a set of capabilities of attackers, we automatically analyze the system and identify ways an adversary may tamper with the system. This will help developers discover new attacks, and improve the design and implementation of the system.

Abstract:
Context. The share and importance of software within automotive vehicles is growing steadily. Most functionalities in modern vehicles, especially safety related functions like advanced emergency braking, are controlled by software. A complex and common phenomenon in today’s automotive vehicles is the distribution of such software functions across several Electronic Control Units (ECUs) and consequently across several ECU system software modules. As a result, integration testing of these distributed software functions has been found to be a challenge. The automotive industry neither has infinite resources, nor has the time to carry out exhaustive testing of these functions. On the other hand, the traditional approach of implementing an ad-hoc selection of test scenarios based on the tester’s experience, can lead to test gaps and test redundancies. Hence, there is a pressing need within the automotive industry for a feasible and effective verification strategy for testing distributed software functions. Objectives. Firstly, to identify the current approach used to test the distributed automotive embedded software functions in literature and in a case company. Secondly, propose and validate a feasible and effective verification strategy for testing the distributed software functions that would help improve test coverage while reducing test redundan- cies and test gaps. Methods. To accomplish the objectives, a case study was conducted at Scania CV AB, Södertälje, Sweden. One of the data collection methods was through conducting interviews of different employees involved in the software testing activities. Based on the research objectives, an interview questionnaire with open-ended and close-ended questions has been used. Apart from interviews, data from relevant ar- tifacts in databases and archived documents has been used to achieve data triangulation. Moreover, to further strengthen the validity of the results obtained, adequate literature support has been presented throughout. Towards the end, a verification strategy has been proposed and validated using existing historical data at Scania. Conclusions. The proposed verification strategy to test distributed automotive embedded software functions has given promising results by providing means to identify test gaps and test redundancies. It helps establish an effective and feasible approach to capture function test coverage information that helps enhance the effectiveness of integration testing of the distributed software functions.

Case studies are widely used across a lot of different subject areas, however there are a lot of questions about the use of it because of the doubt in its’ contribution to science and the quality of it. The purpose with this research paper is to define the case study and the characteristics required in it for it to be classified and recognized as a “good” case study. Findings reveal that case study is defined in many different ways depending on the area of subject it is presented in. A good case study is reliable, valid and is used as a qualitative research method and it contains a lot of depth in the investigated single case.

Abstract:
This thesis explores the idea of research having organisational characteristics which are affected by the institutional culture but can not be defined as a subculture of the institutional culture. In particular, it examines how research culture(s) can be exclusionary and reproduce discriminatory practices. Using quantitative data in the form of Rhodes University Annual Reports and interviews conducted with 11 participants, the thesis documents the current research practices of the Faculty of Humanities at Rhodes University. Such practices incorporate multiple dimensions, including how research is done, who does research, what research is done and research funding rituals. The purpose of this study is to reveal how research cultures are constructed through the seemingly mundane and everyday research practices within a research community. Through the analysis of these everyday practices, participants’ experiences and theoretical arguments, this thesis found that research culture and institutional culture are separate entities, and that research culture plays a vital role in the formation of research practices.

Abstract:
This thesis challenges core assumptions associated with the peer production of culture using the web-based collaborative film production platform Wreckamovie to understand how peer production works in practice. Active cultural participation is a growing political priority for many governments and cultural bodies, but these priorities are often implemented without a basis in empirical evidence, making it necessary for rigorous scholarship to tackle emerging networked cultural production. Existing work portrays peer production efforts as unrealistically distinct from proprietary, market-based production, incorrectly suggesting that peer production allows distributed, non-monetarily motivated, collaboration between self-selected individuals in hierarchy-free communities. In overcoming these assumptions, this thesis contributes to the development of a consolidated theoretical framework encompassing the complicated and multifaceted nature of networked cultural production. This theoretical framing extends Bourdieu’s theory of cultural production and reconciles it with Becker’s Art Worlds framework, and further embeds and draws on Benkler’s notion of commons-based peer production. Concretely, this research tackles the emergence of new collaborative production models enabled by networked technologies, and theorizes the tensions and challenges characterizing such production forms. Secondly, this thesis redefines cultural participation and considers the divisions of labour in online filmmaking materializing from the interactions between professional and non-professional filmmakers. Finally, this study considers the social economies surrounding networked cultural production, including crowdfunding, and characterizes associated conversions of capital, such as the conversion of symbolic capital into financial capital. Methodologically, this thesis employs an embedded case study strategy. It examines four feature film productions facilitated by the online platform Wreckamovie, as well as the online community within which these productions are embedded. The four production cases have completed all production stages, and have resulted in completed cultural goods during the course of data collection. This study’s findings were derived from two and half years of participant observations, interviews with 29 Wreckamovie community and production members, and the examination of archived production-related discourses (2006-2013). Ultimately, this study makes concrete proposals towards a theory of networked cultural production with clear policy implications.

Abstract:
The COVID-19 pandemic has forced user experience (UX) designers to make their research comply with social distant roles, because of this many have turned to using computer mediated communication (CMC) tools. Even though research has shown that interviewing in person is marginally superior to video call interviews, user experience research is often conducted using more than one method. Therefore, this thesis aims to investigate how user experience professionals are using video call as the main communication method for their user centered data gathering. Eleven UX professionals from one company were interviewed about ten different projects, focusing on the project execution and the methods used. The results show different ways of using video calls to interview, workaround methods to replace in person observation and, drawbacks and benefits from using CMC tools to gather data. Indicating that some projects are better suited to the use of video calls then others and suggest possible benefits from using both CMC tools and well as in person methods to gather data.

Abstract:
This thesis focuses on the learning process by which business schools incorporate the principles of societal responsibility at the heart of their research and teaching activities as well as in their management. The role of higher educational research institutions in general, and of business schools, is essential to train leaders and managers in the definition and implementation of social responsibility approaches in companies and other organizations to enable them to have a positive impact on the environment and society, while strengthening their economic performance. The definition and implementation of social responsibility approaches in fact involve particular skills. Business schools must help to identify these skills through their research and then help managers of today and tomorrow to develop them, while applying them themselves to set the example and integrate the principles of the social responsibility in their strategy and practices. Thus, this thesis proposes a single longitudinal case study of the different stages of the organizational learning process for societal responsibility in a French business school particularly engaged in this field. On the theoretical level, this thesis analyses the potential of the theory of organizational learning to understand how a business school learns to integrate the principles of societal responsibility in its research activities and Education as well as in its strategy and management. Based on several research methods, the thesis offers both a macro view of the various developments within the school in the field of societal responsibility over a period of 10 years and a micro analysis of 18 projects aiming to integrate the social responsibility research and teaching activities as well as in the management of the school

Abstract:
The term verification can mean different things to different people based on their background and the context of research. Comparably the term runtime might bring about similar disarray with lesser confusion. Whilst a software application executes on a system, there are libraries and codes that facilitates the execution of that binary, these processes and libraries make up the runtime environment, and verification in this context refers to the concrete techniques that verify a run and checks if it satisfies or defies the specified requirements. This study is specifically concerned with runtime verification systems, and how to make use of them in a limited-resource environment such as embedded systems or Programmable Logic Controller (PLC). It is of utmost importance to validate the conformance of a system, specially those in automotive and transportation industry. Vehicles such as trains are responsible to transport millions of people everyday which makes safety and reliability of the system the most prime component of bunch. Many manufacturers employs state of the art technologies and processes to endure the safety of the final product. Since most of the parts in vehicles (including trains) are computer controlled, the system (OS, application, control system, etc.) should undergo proper and comprehensive tests to single out even the smallest anomalies and misbehaviour. While traditional software testing can detect most of the anomalies, runtime verification can be used as a complementary method to passively monitor the running system and point out those behaviours and malfunctioning that are otherwise close to impossible to be caught. This thesis investigates runtime verification in train manufacturing, and propose a structured, contemporary process and system to monitor the train control system for conformance. Furthermore several methods of formal specification to be used for declaration of specification were explored and a suitable choice for this case study was suggested, in addition a proof of concept tool to demonstrate the entire process is developed as well.

This paper presents methods and software implementation for analyzing a field of research through the use of bibliometrics, i.e., information about published journal articles. Online publication search engines are queried, and their search results are extracted and analyzed, to help inform a researcher of the state of his or her field. Our methodology consists of three components: extraction of terms relevant to the research field, analysis of the growth in prevalence of these terms over time, and identification of interrelationships among these terms using a technique known as Latent Semantic Analysis. These methods are applicable to the analysis of any research field, but this paper presents results from a case study on the field of renewable energy.

Zhou, Yu. "Investigation of Research Commercialization at a University: A Case Study." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/52037.

Full text
Abstract:
With the increase of awareness and focus on university research commercialization, much research had been conducted to investigate this subject. It was revealed that because universities were not traditionally built to serve the purpose of commercialization, many obstacles existed in the path of university research commercialization. Historically, research had largely focused on identifying critical factors that impacted the performance of commercialization. However, it was not clear how those findings could be systematically incorporated into the commercialization improvement plan of individual cases. This research intended to fill this gap and provide a framework that could be used by most universities to access and improve their research commercialization process. A case study of a U.S. land-grant university was conducted and a narrative approach was mainly used as the method of data analysis. Under the scope of a single-case study, four sub-studies were conducted to address the goals of this research. First, a framework was developed that incorporated theories of existing research and the value stream map of lean management. Interviews with the intellectual property office and faculty were conducted to determine if the theoretical framework was applicable. It was found that the framework fitted well with the current process of university research commercialization. After that, a survey that covered a sample size of 1110 researchers at the targeted university was conducted to investigate the importance of different resources at different stages of the process. Resources that were under investigation were grouped into four categories: technical, human, social, and financial resources. This research identified the most important resources for research commercialization were industrial connections (social resource) and assistance from the intellectual property (IP) office (human resource), with industrial connections playing a more importance role at the beginning of the process and the IP office from the stage of patent application. To assess organizational characteristics of the targeted university, interviews were conducted with 22 faculty, three representatives from the administration, one representative from the intellectual property office, and one representative from an external organization. Six criteria derived from previous research were used to guide the assessment: (1) expenditures on research and development (RandD), (2) intellectual property policy, (3) research field, (4) key individuals, (5) commitment to innovation, and (6) networking with external relations. It was found that the targeted university had strong evidence of the advantages of expenditures on RandD and research field, however, it was relatively weak in the other four characteristics. The last part of the research involved interviews with two companies for the purpose of developing a best practice for research commercialization with the examples from the industry. Recommendations to improve targeted university's research commercialization were developed based on findings of the research.

This paper aims at exploring and discussing the possibilities of applying qualitative content analysis as a (text) interpretation method in case study research. First, case study research as a research strategy within qualitative social research is briefly presented. Then, a basic introduction to (qualitative) content analysis as an interpretation method for qualitative interviews and other data material is given. Finally the use of qualitative content analysis for developing case studies is examined and evaluated. The author argues in favor of both case study research as a research strategy and qualitative content analysis as a method of examination of data material and seeks to encourage the integration of qualitative content analysis into the data analysis in case study research.

Sippola, K. (Kari). "Two case studies on real time quality cost measurement in software business." Doctoral thesis, University of Oulu, 2008. http://urn.fi/urn:isbn:9789514289866.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract Malmi et al. (2004) argue that the cost of quality (COQ) literature typically deals with manufacturing or service organizations in continuous or repetitive business processes in which identical or similar activities and work phases are repeated in the same sequence or order, batch after batch or customer after customer. Many modern businesses, such as the software business, are outright project based, or operate like a string of semi-independent projects characterized by unique resources, customized activity or work sequence order, and a predefined start and finish. COQ measuring and reporting are traditionally based on ex post calculations. In this study, an idea of real-time quality cost measurement will be developed and tested. The literature on real-time quality cost accounting is limited or even non-existent. The dissertation investigates whether it is possible to measure quality costs as a real-time basis in the software industry. The purpose is to develop a model for measuring quality costs on a real-time basis in software development. This is achieved by seeking answers to the research question how to measure quality costs on a real-time basis in the software industry. The research extends the current literature in three main respects. First, the study presents the idea of measuring quality costs in real-time basis. Second, a contribution is made by investigating how the characteristics of software business impact on the accounting of quality costs by presenting the nature and distinction of software business as well as its implications for software quality and applying quality cost measurement to the software business. Third, this study is expected to make a contribution by investigating how to use quality cost measurement as a management accounting tool in modern software business environment. The constructive research approach (CRA) proposed by Kasanen et al. (1993) is used in a case company, A, that develops and produces packaged software used in embedded products. Since it is not typically possible to pass semi-strong or strong market tests within a medium-term time span, the construction is tested by using more detailed nuances within the weak market test category suggested by Labro and Tuomela (2003) in order to analyse the level of progress of the construct. The possibility of constructing a real-time cost of quality measurement system developed in Case A is also tested in another case company (Case B) to make the weak market test stronger, and the boundary conditions how to construct such a system in a totally different working environment are charted. The results indicate that such a system could be constructed irrespective of the cost accounting environment or the software used. The anticipated contribution arises from the fact that the construct is a novelty that leads to a new means of quality cost accounting in software business (cf. Lukka 2000).

Fåhraeus, Karin. "Enhancement of the Mechatronic Development Process with Software in the loop Simulation : An embedded control case study." Thesis, KTH, Maskinkonstruktion (Inst.), 2015. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kth:diva-180947.

Full text
Abstract:
This master thesis is performed at the mechatronic department at the company Mycronic, which are responsible for the embedded software in their pick and place machines. Today the embedded code can be executed and tested on a PIL simulation, where the control code runs on the actual target processor and the dynamic of the system (plant model) is modeled by a mathematical equation implemented as a C-function on the target board. The task is to find away to run the simulation with the real embedded code on a desktop computer. The aim is to investigate and examine how this simulation can be achieved and the advantages and opportunities it brings to the development process of the embedded system. For embedded system, Model-based Development usually refers to control and plant modelsand simulations and in the loop simulations. In a model-based workflow it starts with Model in the loop (MIL), then Software in the loop (SIL), Processor in the loop (PIL) and finally Hardware in the loop (HIL). Software in the loop simulation means that the plant is modeled but the control is executed in a low level language such as C and the simulation runs on a desktop computer. The investigation on how to implement a simulation resulted in a prototype SIL simulator, representing one of the axes. The simulation executes the control C-code together with a z-axis plant model on a Linux desktop computer. It is realized in two ways, where both are based on compiling the control code for a Linux computer and the difference is the implementation of the plant model. For the first simulation method, the plant models is represented in the same way as the PIL simulation and for the second simulation method the plant model is represented in Simulink. The result from this master thesis is that the SIL simulation has shown to be very useful andhave a lot of advantages. The SIL simulation gives an opportunity to execute and test the code and the control before it is integrated with the target processor. Problems and errors can thus be detected early. One of the big advantages is that it is not dependent of any hardware and any other software/tool. With the SIL simulation the code gets easier to debug, longer logscan be achieved and the simulation gets closer to reality than when modeling the control. A very important part of the SIL simulation is that it includes the interaction between the mechanical design, the control design and the software design which is very important in mechatronics system. The SIL simulation contributes to be able to run the main software together with the simulation, which helps in the integration tests.
Ett modellbaserat arbetsflöde startar med Model in the loop (MIL), sedan Software in the loop (SIL), Processor in the loop (PIL) och sist Hardware in the loop (HIL).

Abstract:

Nurse education leaders have a fiduciary responsibility of keep nursing curricula current with the latest technologies in healthcare. Nurse educators and nursing students are the end users who can provide the necessary feedback about the use of technology in nursing academia and clinical settings. This single case study with embedded units of analysis (the end users) was about the lived experience of the end users’ use of personal mobile devices and associated technology in the pursuit of their academic objectives. This qualitative study investigated what issues, if any, were related to the use (or non-use) of personal mobile devices (PMDs) in the nursing classroom and clinical settings. Other research questions for the end users were if institutional policies, protocols, and practices supported the technological aspects of nursing academia as well as any recommendations for improvements. The small, purposive sample population came from the Upstate Region of South Carolina. The researcher facilitated semi-structured interviews with nurse educators and focus group discussions with nursing students to identify any unforeseen and/or unanticipated concerns in the use of PMDs in nursing academia and clinical practices. The Model Measurement Questionnaire (MMQ) was incorporated into the data collection process which had multiple uses. Data analysis was framed around the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) and based on a triangulation of data collected from the end users through field notes, MMQ results, and observations. The most significant outcome of this study was the identification of a psychosocial phenomenon not found in current literature. A secondary objective of this case study was to suggest a basic and repeatable process for qualitative assessment of current technology from the lived experiences of nurse educators and nursing students.

Alsoliman, B. S. "A strategic approach to the implementation of quality distance learning in Saudi Arabia : an embedded case study." Thesis, University of Salford, 2015. http://usir.salford.ac.uk/37589/.

Full text
Abstract:
New technological advancements in media and communication have made information increasingly accessible and have offered an environment for distance learning to expand as an alternative mode for delivering education and instruction. The advantages of this mode of delivery have encouraged educational institutions around the world to expand their educational approach and offer the opportunity for more students to join their programmes at a distance. In light of the variety of methods and technologies that are used to deliver such programmes, challenges concerning the quality of these programmes have started to emerge. In response, organisations and agencies have begun to develop quality standards for distance learning in order to assess the implementation of these programmes. Calls for the use of such standards in assuring the quality of distance learning programmes are on the rise. By 2002, many Saudi Arabian universities had begun to offer a range of distance learning programmes to meet the demand from a growing number of students. Although the Saudi government invested huge financial and human resources into the implementation of distance learning, the quality of such learning has been widely disputed. Through a case study approach involving a leading university in Saudi Arabia that offers a variety of distance learning programmes, this study aimed to develop a strategic approach for implementing quality distance learning. The study utilised a mixed methods design for assessment purposes from three different perspectives (administrators’, faculty members’ and students’). The study found that the quality of distance learning in the country faces many barriers at six levels/dimensions. These barriers, in most respects, ensued from the ambiguity of the Ministry of Higher Education regulations that organise distance learning in the country, which has incapacitated the Deanship of Distance Learning role as the centre of distance learning operations at distance learning Saudi universities. It concluded with a strategic approach that is mainly focused on the elimination of the aforementioned barriers. The study findings provide Saudi universities authorities with a comprehensive tool for evaluating the quality of their distance learning programmes and solutions to implement quality distance learning in the country to avoid the shortcomings of the perceived poor distance learning quality.

De, Villiers Mark Graham. "Energy management in industry : a case study on the brewing industry." Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 1992. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/21960.

Full text
Abstract:
The industrial sector is the main energy user in South Africa, using about half the national total, and compared to most other industrialised countries South Africa has a high in_dustrial energy intensity, thus necessitating improved industrial energy management. The malt brewing industry was chosen as a case study industry to illustrate the potential for improved energy management in industry. Ohlsson's brewery in Cape Town was analysed in detail and energy management improvements identified for that brewery were ·expanded to include the malt brewing industry in general, by comparing Ohlsson's brewery to other breweries in South Africa. It was found that energy requirements at Ohlsson's Brewery could be reduced by 12-20%, by the implementation of economically feasible energy management schemes. However, mainly because of discrepancies in coal prices between Ohlsson's Brewery and most other breweries in South Africa, energy requirements for the brewing industry in general can be reduced by 7-13%. This translates to be a monetary saving of R242 000-R486 000/month, which is evenly spread between coal, electricity, and maximum demand savings. No single large energy saving scheme was identified, but the potential. savings are due to a number of schemes. The potential energy savings identified in this study exclude the savings as a result of the implementation of process sensitive schemes, which were considered beyond the scope of this study. Nevertheless some process sensitive schemes, associated with boiling in the brewhouse, could result in substantial savings. The energy usage target identified for South African breweries is higher than current energy requiiements for breweries in the Britain and Germany when climatic and operational constraints are taken into account. This is because Britain and Germany have higher energy costs relative to production costs, government incentive schemes for reducing energy usage, and more stringent environmental legislation often necessitating the recovery of brewhouse vapours.

Ayvaz, Meliha Dzirlo. "Generating Creativity in Teams| An Exploratory Case Study." Thesis, The George Washington University, 2017. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10605619.

Full text
Abstract:

This study examined the process of team creativity in the workplace as it relates to experiential, cognitive, and social factors, including organizational and cultural structures, team social dynamics, and effects on individuals. Its purpose was to understand the quality of real-time social interactions and dynamics underlying the creative process in teams. The researcher employed a case study methodology, using observation and individual and focus group interviews of a highly creative team within an organization in a creative industry. Data were analyzed using the constant comparative method.

The study had seven major findings: (1) the team actively integrated elements of play during initial interactions; (2) the setting provided a “play” environment that encouraged team members to view things from different perspectives; (3) the play mood that was initiated in early meetings accelerated team bonding and trust and consequently facilitated the emergence of creativity in subsequent meetings; (4) through the active integration of available resources and tools over time, team members generated novel ways of interacting with the environment; (5) the introduction of externally induced stress caused an abrupt shift from playful to task-oriented behaviors; (6) the final solution emerged gradually through incremental integration of ideas proposed by individual team members over time; and (7) all team members took part in developing elements of the final work product based on their individual strengths and preferences. Conclusions include the following: (1) the creative process incorporates play as a behavioral orientation; (2) the creative process is enabled by a combination of autonomy and constraint; (3) the creative process combines significant aspects of experiential and social learning expressed through the reciprocal interaction of the environment, personal and cognitive factors, and behavior; and (4) team member alignment around shared values helps facilitate social dynamics and the creative process. This study sheds new insight on the transdisciplinary nature of the creativity phenomenon that integrates creativity, play, adult learning, and general systems theories. Recommendations for practice and research include, but are not limited to, integrating this study’s findings into existing innovative team learning models (e.g., action learning) and developing an inquiry-based design to generating creativity in organizations.

Hougaard et al. report an embedded case study in which nine socially phobic clients were treated as part of a therapy program, which incorporated individual and group therapy and which was largely delivered by trainee clinicians. An important focus of the report is on the effectiveness of their treatment model. This commentary draws attention to the size and complexity of the available data, and it suggests ways in which the use of a more explicitly interpretative methodology can draw out additional dimensions of the data and allow a more systematic contribution to be made to the development of clinical theory.

Most of the works on embedded system have involved with purchasing embedded OS from a vendor or developing a new one from scratch. In contrast, modifying an available general purpose operating system (GPOS) might save time and cost. However, characteristics such as easy access to source code and an unbounded environment for further development are necessary criteria for selecting an appropriate GPOS. Linux is a GPOS with these characteristics. This thesis proposes a call graph approach to identify redundant codes (i.e., unreachable codes and dead codes) and then eliminate them from Linux kernel of a specific embedded system. This study presents two different call graph approaches, dynamic call graph and complete call graph, as a means to customize a Linux kernel by considering a specific application and hardware requirement at the same time. Customizing the Linux kernel using the dynamic call graph approach can produce a very small Linux kernel image. However, this minimal kernel may be not stable. An exhaustive test to an application is then required to include all corresponding and necessary Linux kernel functionality. The redundant source codes in the Linux kernel can also be identified and removed by analyzing the complete call graph of the Linux kernel. However, call graph construction becomes a difficult job in the presence of function pointer variables that are often seen in OS kernel codes. A function pointer variable is a pointer which points to the entry of the function or “NULL” value, and dereferences to call the points-to functions. This thesis proposes a new points-to set analysis algorithm to construct the complete call graph of a Linux kernel. Then the presences of redundant codes are able to be analyzed. Finally, the redundant code in a typical Linux kernel in an embedded system is classified and eliminated. In the experimental system, a tool-set is developed to reduce the Linux kernel with considering the application for an embedded system by eliminating redundant code. The tool set described in this thesis has been applied for customizing the Linux kernel version 2.4.20 running on a software CD player (ACDC). By using this tool set, about 20.4% of this kernel’s source codes are successfully identified as redundant codes and removed. Generally, the work of customizing the Linux kernel may spend up to several weeks. By using this tool set, it could be dramatically shortened to within one hour (including the time of twice compiling of operating system codes and once monitoring the execution of application). Therefore, this tool set can efficiently reduce the time of customizing Linux kernel. Additionally, only a common software engineer, but not a very professional Linux kernel expert, is required to operate our customization tool set.

Object-oriented analysis and design approach has become the mainstream of today’s systems development technique. The Timing Diagram and State Machine Diagram from the Unified Modeling Language (UML) are becoming the major tools for modeling the platform independent model (PIM) of an embedded system. Once these two diagrams are constructed, the results can then be transformed into its platform specific model and template code based on the model driven architecture (MDA) approach. However, the detailed guideline for the transformation from Timing Diagram and State Machine Diagram to the template code is lacking. Therefore, this study presents a methodology which provides guidelines for the transformation from State Machine Diagram and Timing Diagram to template code for the embedded system. The research methodology is articulated using the design science research methodology. A usability evaluation with a real-world embedded system case is performed to demonstrate its applicability. The results indicated that with this proposed method, the system developer can effectively transform the PIM of an embedded system into its template code.

The embedded systems have low energy-consuming and long-term stable operation with relative low-cost system architecture. To miniaturize the existing robot SPA (Sense, Plan, Act) model to work in a card-size board as cost-effective micro-architecture is our application goal of sensor box. A STTA-Loop microstructure is well defined as the loop of Sense, Trigger, Transport and Actuator states, and then makes critical sensing data easily and continuously send to a cloud site possible. Our study has used Raspberry Pi system board to implement a sensor box and has made good use of Python language as development tool to carry out two case studies. A conventional waterfall model is presented by 7 major design steps, that are mostly illustrated by UML model diagrams to describe the interactive behaviors and states of system board and its attached GPIO devices. Two case studies have been used to demonstrate the I/O functions of sensor box with finger pulse data sensed on sudden cold (or hot) environment and ultrasonic wave effects on distances. The sensors can get the real floating data within the assigned temperature range, and use a buzzer and four 8x8 dot matrix modules to indicate the output status. This system would take a proper GMAIL-notification action for exceptional filtered data. Our study made a data-sent-out and store-and-browse implementation to interact with ThingSpeak cloud platform by short python code with triggering thresholds UI and simple API call .

To benefit from the stored data, enterprises implement Business Intelligence solutions and technology-driven processes. The most significant advantage of BI is analyzing actionable information and data-driven business decisions for executives and managers. Since technology is evolving very fast, Business Intelligence processes are getting more advanced every day. These advancements are promoting accountability, visibility, timely actionable information, increased return on investment, connected business processes, standardized management processes and augmented organizational flexibility. In a relationship with BI, enterprise performance management provides more predictable answers on these advancements by improving planning, budgeting, financial reporting, and consolidation. Therefore, this study aims to contribute to a better understanding of the implementation processes of embedded Enterprise Performance Management Solutions in ERP Embedded BI Platforms by revealing its methodology, steps, significant milestones, and effectiveness of the organizational structure. The embedded approach is going to be maintained by Business Intelligence based Business Planning and Consolidation tool on Enterprise Resource Planning System. Embedded Enterprise Performance Management solutions consist of Analysis Reporting, Business Planning, and Consolidation. Thoroughly they cover budgeting, planning, and consolidation as an advance altogether. The Implementation of an artefact aims to satisfy market competition requirements and to compete with financial demands which are originated from the growth rate at the organizational level There are several studies in the literature focuses on the critical success factors of BI projects, but there are not many studies which are mainly focused on the process evaluation of embedded enterprise performance management solutions and their success on organizations. This study will be an exploratory design research case study of a Group Company which is professionalized in language translation in 30 different countries on five different continents.

According to the statistical study conducted by Financial Supervisory Commission in 2016, Taiwan insurance density reached TWD $133,109 which currently ranked number ten globally. Moreover, Insurance penetration in Taiwan is now as high as 18.31%, ranking number two globally and number one in Asia respectively. Based on The Life Insurance Association of R.O.C, the total insurance revenue is at TWD $2.5 trillion, demonstrating the important role Insurance plays in wealth management in Taiwan. In an era where declining birth rate, aging population, and volatile financial market are common, most people deem insurance as a low risk and stable protection for them and their family. However, for young beneficiaries who are not yet capable of managing claimed compensation, issues such as deception and scams can be serious social and legal problems. This research paper will discuss how to incorporate Insurance Trust into insurance plan in order to maximize the beneficiaries' benefits. It also summarizes different customized models for various types of family structure and specific needs. Through primary case studies and secondary research, this report will analyze the topic of insurance planning, ranging from life insurance, health insurance, cancer insurance, long-term insurance, to savings insurance and investment oriented insurance. Through four primary real-life case studies, this research will present customized insurance plans and trust proposals that aim to balance achieving financial goals and securing life. Notably, the proposals are designed based on different family conditions, after-incident impacts, and insurers' expectations. When considering life as a three-stage process, this research shows that there are four main areas of risks. One should review her own situation, adjusts risk planning and select the most suitable plan accordingly at different times. The phenomena of high insurance fee and low premium show that Taiwanese insurers prefer health insurance or capital preservation investment insurance, and adoption rate for insurance trust has been relatively low, due to its nascency in the market. As the insurance industry in Taiwan continues to mature, we argue that insurance planning will be even more comprehensive if traditional insurance products and insurance trust can be combined together, thereby maximizing the expected benefits and life-long protection. From our research, we propose the following recommendations: (1) Every insurer should incorporate insurance trust into insurance planning (2) Insurance sales agents should deepen their knowledge and develop expertise in insurance trust (3) Discuss and resolve conflicts between insurance law and trust law.

Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis is to assess the value of Dimpomar, a privately owned company. In order to reach reasonable results and perform the valuation, the theoretical background was first presented regarding the several valuation methods, followed by a company presentation, industry analysis and the analysis of the financial indicators and situation of the company. The valuation methods used in order to reach the enterprise value, firm value, equity value and price per share value were the Discounted Cash Flow and the Relative Valuation (Multiples). The fact that these two methods were applied, allowed the comparison of Dimpomar with the peer group, having more arguments to justify the obtained value of Dimpomar, which was an enterprise value of 13,784,962€ and a price target of 177.4€. To conclude, this work provides a solid base of analysis for a possible exit through an IPO (initial public offer).

As the technology still shrinking, the fabricated quality is much harder to control than before. Therefore, more and more hard defects and more severe process variation are observed in the silicon. These challenges influence the designers and testers in different way. To overcome these process issues, circuit designers proposed many novel circuit techniques. For the testers, these process issues will impact the traditional circuit behaviors, which will create the new fault behaviors which have never seen before. Also, the new circuit techniques may create different fault behaviors when defects occur. From the aspects of testing, there are many incoming challenges should be solved. In this thesis, we discussed the testing challenges of different advanced embedded memory macros, including embedded DRAM (eDRAM), sub-threshold SRAM, and content addressable memory (CAM). For each memory macro, we first analyzed the layout structure of the memory cell to identify the possible defects which will be occurred. We performed HSPICE simulation by injecting the possible defects into the memory cell to observe the fault behavior of each injected defect. Then we categorized the fault behaviors into the existing fault models and newly proposed fault models. We proposed effective and efficient test methods for covering all fault models. All experiments were applied on the real test chips. The experimental results show that our proposed test methods are useful.
