Abstract:
La publicación en 1860 en New Haven (Connecticut, EE.UU.) de The Book of Similitudes, libro de emblemas de John Barber dirigido al beneficio espiritual de sus lectores, constituye un claro ejemplo de la influencia europea en la emblemática americana del siglo XIX, por cuanto entre sus fuentes se encuentran los “espejos del alma” de origen francés y germánico. Este artículo analiza un conjunto de emblemas alusivos a los pecados capitales alegorizados por animales, a través de los cuales sus autores desarrollan una catequesis que transita desde el esclavo del pecado hasta el reincidente, pasando por el arrepentido y el santificado. El estudio nos permite concluir que, más allá del paralelismo del mensaje y de la reelaboración de los emblemas europeos realizada por Barber para adaptarlos al credo metodista, la tradición animalista mantiene plena vigencia en la América del siglo XIX en su simbolismo de los pecados capitales.

El presente trabajo se centrará en la comparación de la representación alegórica de la relación entre el amor y la muerte en cuatro emblemas del pintor, dibujante y humanista, Otto van Veen, también conocido como Otto Vaenius. Específicamente nos centraremos en dos de sus tres libros de emblemas Amorum Emblemata (1608) y Amoris Divini Emblemata (1615). El género emblemático, inaugurado por el Emblematum Liber (1531) de Alciato, es poco conocido hoy en día, pero tuvo una gran importancia en los siglos XVI y XVII, pues respondía a las inquietudes pasatistas de la época, siguiendo, por una parte, la influencia de los epigramas latinos y por otra, la interpretación que tuvieron en este tiempo los jeroglíficos egipcios.

Resumo : Esta pesquisa propôs a construção de emblemas sonoros a partir do estudo das imagens do jesuíta alemão do século XVII, Athanasius Kircher. Neste trabalho essas imagens são vistas como aglutinações simbólicas. Os emblemas foram trabalhados e recriados nas formas: literária, de imagem e musical, na construção de um campo sonoro/espacial relacionado ao pensamento do padre alemão, bem como nos arredores simbólicos da sua época e nas ressonâncias artísticas de outros períodos
Abstract : This research proposed the construction of musical emblems from the study of the images of the German Jesuit of the century XVII, Athanasius Kircher. In this work these images are seen as symbolic agglutinations. The emblems were worked and recreated in the forms: literary, of image and musical, in the construction of a resonant / space field relative to the thought of the German priest, as well as in the symbolic surroundings of his time and in the artistic resonance of other periods

Este proyecto surge como una búsqueda de más instancias en el diseño, la idea de explorar cómo generar aportes nuevos en áreas diferentes a las más comunes en donde nuestra disciplina se ve relacionada, abriendo el espectro de funciones y nichos en donde el diseñador gráfico puede relacionarse y ayudar a construir. Una de las áreas en donde se puede trabajar es en la historia, dejar de mirar al futuro y a las nuevas tendencias estéticas para mirar hacia atrás, a lo que ya hemos pasado y hacer algo en función de ello, intentar rearmar nuestro pasado gráfico en función del diseño moderno. El proyecto se centra en el rescate patrimonial y valorización de los emblemas del Ejército de Chile a lo largo de los doscientos años de nuestro país. Estos signos pertenecen a nuestra historia gráfica y por eso es importante valorizarlos, sobretodo cuando se están perdiendo poco a poco. El otorgarles valor fortalece nuestra identidad como país aportando cultura y conocimiento de nosotros mismos. Para valorizar los emblemas el proyecto pretende aportar con un estudio de ellos, utilizando herramientas entregadas por diferentes pensadores del diseño y la semiótica, para generar un producto que no sólo los muestre sino que también hable de ellos. El proyecto será una publicación impresa que reunirá los diferentes emblemas del Ejército de Chile desde 1810 hasta 2010, que serán organizados y normalizados para luego, utilizando como base la semiótica, ser analizados desde tres puntos de vista: la sintaxis, la semántica y el pragmatismo.

Abstract:
This project examines the historical use of text on emblematic objects and through a studio-based practice investigates the signifying properties of object, text and material in the communication of symbolic message. It involves the manufacture of contemporary jewellery and tableware in traditional and non-traditional materials and references cultural and political themes. The symbolism of these themes has been explored through the visual and material applications of selected text, the collection and manipulation of found material (found with or without text), and how meaning can be symbolised through the transcendent manipulation of form. In my research I examined the established history of emblematic objects, which through their incorporation of text, their function and scale in relation to the body, organise, distinguish, categorise, unite or isolate groups of people. In my research I established that text has been employed by gold and silversmiths through out history and in a variety of ways - to narrate messages, as an abstract decoration, or as a means of identifying the maker but the graphic potential of text as a visible sign was rarely demonstrated. With this studio based project I was interested in investigating the signifying properties of text and the creation of a dynamic relationship between text, form and material as a means to communicate symbolic meaning. My research establishes the potential of the metaphoric and material language of jewellery and tableware to make reference to and communicate within contemporary cultural and political dialogues.

Abstract:
This paper presents a framework allowing emblematic gestures detection, segmentation and their recognition for human-robots interaction purposes. This framework is based on a new coding of arms’ kinematics reflecting both the muscular activity of the performer and the appearance of arm seen by the recipient when a gesture is performed. Following that, gestures can be seen as sequences of torques activations leading arm’s parts to express a comprehensive meaning. In addition, these sequences have very stable topologies and shapes regardless to performers. This facilitates the generalization of the recognition process with a minimalistic learning effort for online usages. Promising results were obtained for a set of 5 classes of gestures performed by 19 different persons.

In this paper, we have presented the personality and activity of Agustin Betancourt who can be considered among the first modern mechanical (industrial) engineers with a strong formation and expertise in TMM. Abstract:
This study examines the business models of four emblematic Digital Disruptive Intermediaries (DDIs), Airbnb, TripAdvisor, Expedia and Booking.com. The sources are constituted mainly by surveys, articles and expert opinions which are the main argumentation sources. The best practices for an ideal business model in tourism industry through the analysis of the DDIs are the findings of the study. The main functions of the DDIs are Cataloguing, Reordering or filtering, Ranking and Recommending, Bundling, Sharing, Intent Casting, Channelling Actors, Pricing and Matching Actors. The originality of the paper derives from the SWOT analysis of the business models of the four well known DDIs. There is no previous analysis which evaluates the business models and discloses the main functions they perform.

Abstract:
Social indexicality and enregisterment are basic notions of a theoretical model elaborated in the United States, the aim of which is to describe the relationship between the use of language variation and patterns of social behavior at the level of formal classification. This analytical approach is characterized by focusing on the interrelation of social performance and language awareness. In my contribution, I want to show how this modern methodology can give new impetus to the study of today’s problem areas in Europe, such as migration and language or urban life and language use. In particular, I am interested in the case of Catalan, which has been studied for some time by proponents of the North American enregisterment theory. This leads me to indicate that explicit forms of social conduct, such as language shift or the emblematic use of linguistic forms, can be interpreted with regard to the social indexicality of Catalan. I thus analyze them in a way which shows that authenticity and integration in Catalan society can be achieved to a considerable extent by practicing forms of linguistic enregisterment.
