Abstract:
This volume represents the founding act of a proposal for training, didactic, study and research work which aims at enhancing historical knowledge in the field of education and educational professionalism. The contributions intend to highlight the identity and usefulness of history and, in particular, of the history of education, not only for every education level, but for the life of local communities itself. At the same time, the authors aim at suggesting a desirable development of the history of education by adopting a Public History approach. This way, academic knowledge can actually be brought into contact with educational contexts, much more so than it has been done so far, in order to respond, together with other disciplines, to the emerging social needs. The Public History of Education, intended this way, can create new profitable relationships between formal and informal education, between the past and present of educators and teachers, between the world of research, cultural institutes (above all, museums) and society.

Abstract:
The research aims to analyse the concept of the 'holiday home' in Italy, a phenomenon that is not very well known and not given sufficient visibility in the tourism sector. The objective is to grasp the role and the degree of response that the holiday homes can offer in order to consolidate a genuinely social and sustainable tourism, which is the specific feature of the Associazione di Promozione Sociale Santa Lucia. The holiday homes represent an efficacious response to the emerging motivations for travel and a new sensitivity towards social and sustainable tourism. The growing opportunities for this sector call for reflection on the mission and future positioning of the holiday homes within the tourist reception panorama, with the deriving choices relating to: the offer, consisting of values more than of services; the functions fulfilled, intimately bound up with the demands of the individual and the territory; the quality of the service, which is not generic but linked to the functions and can be measured in line with objective and subjective parameters. Strategic awareness, managerial capacity and elevated professionalism at all levels are the factors of legitimisation and success of this original reception formula.

Abstract:
I’m not sure where to begin my story. My name is Amanda Keller, and in the late 1990s, when I was 13, I was placed in out-of-home placement by a psychiatrist in Cincinnati, Ohio. I’d been abused most of my childhood by my stepfather, who was a sadist. I have a number of poorly healed fractures to testify to what he did to me physically. Psychologically, the effect of being tortured for years really took its toll, and I think the psychological impact was much worse. In addition to being in a bad mental state because of what was done to me, I was also not well because of what wasn’t done for me. I’d reported the abuse formally four times to professionals before anything happened. Relatives and neighbors were aware of what was happening, and I guess those that knew the most didn’t know what to do. One of the times I reported my stepdad we moved to a different state, so I can’t blame the police on that occasion, but then again, no one saved me. This effect of not being helped when I reached out, which is a scary thing to do when your relative plans his abuses, made me hate everyone, in particular adults....

Abstract:
As globalization increases, and an interlocking web of nations, governments, nonstate actors, laws, and rules affect human behavior, lawyers are often among the first responders when crises hit and have a key and growing role in resolving them. Indeed, when crises occur, the need for lawyers to step in to help resolve and to craft solutions to problems resulting those crises create is acute. This book explores this phenomenon and attempts to identify and define what it means to engage in the practice of law during crisis situations. In so doing, it hopes to further define the contours of the emerging field of crisis lawyering. The discussion includes crisis management, professionalism, and legal ethics. What is more, it not only provides guidance to lawyers in such situations but also helps them understand crises better so that they can respond more effectively, efficiently, appropriately, and creatively. This volume strives to improve crisis and emergency responses by shining a light on the role of the law and the lawyers who help resolve crises. It offers insights into an emerging field of legal practice—what we call “crisis lawyering.”

Abstract:
In 1978, aged 65, Edith took up the position of professor of political economy at the Institut Européen d’Administration des Affaires or European Institute of Business Administration (INSEAD) in France, and became the first associate dean of research and development (1982–4). She advanced the growth and professionalism of INSEAD research. Uwe Kitzinger, then dean, regarded her appointment as a significant step towards his vision of INSEAD as a European centre of knowledge generation. She took up the position there at a time when the ideas of resource-based, competence-based, dynamic capabilities-based, knowledge-based approaches to business strategy, strategic management, and organization science—all derived from her thinking—were emerging. At INSEAD, as elsewhere, she is remembered for the quality of her mentoring. As her husband’s health declined she became a devoted carer but continued to travel, write, and lecture extensively.

De Bel-Air, Françoise. An Emerging Trend in Arab Migration. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190608873.003.0008.

Full text
Abstract:
The growing share of skilled and highly-skilled, often unmarried, young Arab women immigrating to the GCC is generally un-documented. Shedding some light on this population, therefore, will not only emphasize a new phenomenon, but it also, first, points at a new structural trend within Arab populations: the emergence of educated female professionals in Arab societies characterized by low female activity rates. Second, it challenges the dominant assumption that Arab migration to Gulf countries is a “male-only” phenomenon in which women are married dependents. This contribution aims at laying some ground to bridge the knowledge gap regarding Arab female highly-skilled workers in the Gulf. The study explores the proximate determinants—rise in age at marriage, development of female celibacy in the Arab world, expansion of female education levels—and structural conditions compelling an increasing number of Arab citizens, male and female, to seek better futures abroad. Findings, such as the widespread denial that patriarchal pressures are important factors in determining Arab female migration, question the categories used, including Arab, female, and Gulf migration patterns. The study also concludes that such partial results beg to be completed by a wider-scale survey involving highly-skilled female migrants from several Arab countries and systematically comparing their migratory patterns and experience.

Abstract:
Environmental public health scientists and health protection practitioners are constantly challenged to respond to new or poorly understood hazards. Practitioners might also be required to address well-characterized hazards that have either increased in magnitude or re-emerged in different situations. Developing technological advances and new and emerging industrial processes (such as fracking, nanotechnology, shale gas, waste fires) can raise difficult questions for the public health practitioner, especially where research and health-related evidence is lacking. In these cases, public health science has a key role in undertaking and communicating risks and in providing the most accurate available scientific evidence and public health advice. The field of environmental public health is crowded with complex problems demanding our attention. It is impossible to devote sufficient clinical, research, and advocacy energies to all of these problems at once. Clinicians, public health professionals, and environmental public health scientists have to choose which health issues take priority.

Abstract:
In civil law courts, early modern civil procedure was based on the Roman-canonical model of proceedings originally developed in late medieval ecclesiastical courts and by academic scholarship. Its main features were the principle of party disposition and its corollary, the adversarial principle. These features also governed to a large extent English common law proceedings in civil litigation. The new secular and ecclesiastical social elites emerging in urban environments from the late eleventh century onwards rejected traditional forms of procedures because they perceived them as arbitrary. Early modern political developments tended to reorganize the courts’ systems in a polity under the authority of the sovereign, but in most territories, a patchwork of courts remained in place. The fundamental structure of civil proceedings remained by and large in place in the system of national courts established from the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century onwards.

Abstract:
India and South Africa, two states that bookended the process of twentieth century decoloniszation, punched above their weight in global politics in their initial years of liberation. This book analyses the foreign policy ideas, identity, and institutions of these two newly independent states. Theoretically, it argues that foreign policy is often more than just a reaction to global events; rather it is a site where ideas of nationhood are legitimized. Nehru’s India advanced the idea of ‘civilisational pacifism’ through its foreign policy, in turn sanctifying a particular idea of India—a non-violent, secular, and civilizational state. Likewise, in South Africa, ‘rainbow nation’ and ‘African renaissance’, two ideas internalized in the country through its foreign policy, contest for predominance. The book also narrates the institutional history of the early years of the Ministry of External Affairs in India and the Department of International Relations and Cooperation in South Africa. In particular, it investigates the relationship between the political leadership and the foreign office bureaucracy in these two countries and discusses how this relationship affected decision-making. The traditions of national identity-making in these countries have also influenced their respective ideas of bureaucratic ‘professionalism’, which lay at the heart of understanding why the two ministries have developed different organization cultures. This book is the first detailed theoretical and historical comparative analysis of the foreign policies of two emerging countries from the Global South: India and South Africa.

Moreover, conventional tests have been neither developed for nor field-validated on young children with disabilities for early intervention purposes. Dramatic changes are emerging in the assessment of young children, particularly those with developmental delays/disabilities. Interdisciplinary professionals must know and adhere to the professional practice standards for assessment in early childhood intervention. The National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) and the Division for Early Childhood (DEC) standards promote authentic assessment as the evidence-based alternative for young children to prevent the misrepresentation of young children with disabilities—the mismeasure of young children (Bagnato, Neisworth & Pretti-Frontczak, 2010).

Abstract:
This chapter explores how some anarchists aligned themselves with the emerging freethinkers' movement centered in the southern city of Ponce to address educational issues on the island. The Puerto Rican Left had been founding CESs since the end of the nineteenth century, which gave workers a source of radicalized education. While the freethinkers were mostly middle-class professionals, they shared with anarchists a fervent belief in free expression and freedom of speech. In addition, both anarchists and freethinkers condemned what they saw as the influence of religion on society, especially in education. As a result, both called for rationalist education modeled after the ideals and Modern Schools in Spain developed by Francisco Ferrer y Guardia.

Abstract:
The overall purpose of this book is to provide a highly practical guide for school professionals to efficiently address cases of youth with school refusal behavior at different levels of severity and complexity. School refusal behavior can consist of full or part-day absences, tardiness, skipped classes, morning misbehaviors in an attempt to miss school, and school attendance under considerable duress. School refusal behavior is a pervasive and difficult problem faced by many types of mental health professionals (e.g., psychologists, psychiatrists, marriage and family therapists), school officials (e.g., administrators, guidance counselors, school-based social workers, school psychologists), and others (e.g., pediatricians, probation officers). School refusal behavior, even in mild forms, has been shown to be a significant risk factor for social, behavioral, and academic problems in middle childhood and adolescence as well as psychiatric, economic, and occupational difficulties in adulthood. This book provides assessment and intervention strategies along a multi-tiered model that includes systemic approaches to prevent school absenteeism (Tier 1), clinical techniques for emerging or moderate cases of absenteeism (Tier 2), and educational and other procedures for chronic and severe cases of absenteeism (Tier 3).

Abstract:
Companies across all industries are engaging in digital transformation to harness the power of advanced information technologies. Building on interviews and diverse case studies, this book describes how data and algorithms are reshaping management practices, organizational structures, corporate culture, and work roles. The book develops a broad framework for understanding digitalization not as a technological change, but as a new normative mindset, ‘the data imperative’. New managerial ideals compel companies to pursue digital omniscience and omnipotence—the abilities to represent and understand the world through real-time data flows and to control customer experiences, physical equipment, and workers with software. The efforts to complement and replace human expertise with data and smart algorithms are associated with shifts in strategic priorities, adoption of powerful modular architectures, new organizational structures, and introduction of artificial intelligence into diverse work roles. Surveying the changes in management and the workplace, this book offers an integrative and balanced account of the ongoing changes. It elaborates how artificial intelligence is changing work at all levels of the hierarchy and envisions how the emerging artificially intelligent organization will change how professionals work. The frameworks and ideas espoused in this book will help the reader understand the ongoing changes in the workplace that affect everyone from executives and professionals to frontline workers.

Abstract:
Anesthesiologists may encounter patients with a wide variety of acute neurologic events in the perioperative period at various stages in their workup, diagnosis, and treatment. The urgency of diagnosis, workup, and definitive treatment falls on a spectrum from minutes to days to weeks depending on the clinical scenario. This section deals primarily with the emergent and urgent acute neurologic events where time to treatment is paramount to a good neurological outcome. A thorough understanding of the pathophysiology, assessment, and treatment of these neurologic conditions is essential for all anesthesia professionals in order to ensure optimal care delivery and outcomes for patients.

VanCour, Shawn. Making Radio Music. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190497118.003.0004.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter focuses on miking methods, mixing strategies, and performance styles developed by studio workers and on-air talent for making radio music. These strategies were governed by five principles: (1) acoustic plasticity (manipulating reverberation to simulate different acoustic environments); (2) sonic restraint (eschewing forceful concert-hall projections in favor of more subdued, microphone-appropriate performance styles); (3) flattening of curves (compression of dynamic range, yielding a uniformly close-up sound); (4) sonic parsimony (reduction of sonic inputs to maintain clarity of reproduction); and (5) intelligibility (rejecting fidelity to real-world spatial relationships in favor of a clear and evenly balanced sound). Embraced for broadcasting during the early and middle years of the 1920s, these principles helped to professionalize and legitimize radio’s emerging forms of soundwork and would also inform parallel strategies pursued in recording studios and Hollywood soundstages, facilitating broader shifts in period sound culture.

Charani, Esmita, and Gabriel Birgand. Managing behaviours: social, cultural, and psychological aspects of antibiotic prescribing and use. Oxford University Press, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780198758792.003.0003.

Abstract:
Antibiotic prescribing in secondary care is suboptimal. The collective term for the myriad of interventions targeting antibiotic prescribing is antimicrobial stewardship. These interventions all aim to help optimize antibiotic prescribing by changing prescribing behaviours. However, there is currently very little evidence from social science incorporated into the design and implementation of these interventions. This is despite emerging evidence suggesting that antibiotic prescribing is influenced by a set of unique cultural and social determinants. In order to better understand how the prescribing process occurs in hospitals and how we can optimize it we need to undertake research into understanding the context in which prescribing decisions are made. Interventions need to be developed which are multidisciplinary in nature and involve active engagement with the teams in which they are implemented. To aid this process we also need to ensure that healthcare professionals proactively receive feedback and education about their prescribing behaviours.

Abstract:
Pregnant patients are at increased risk of difficult airway management due to both anatomic and physiologic changes that occur with pregnancy and during the process of labor. While the majority of surgical procedures on labor and delivery are performed with neuraxial anesthesia, general anesthesia may be required at any time. As such, all anesthesia professionals must be prepared at all times for unplanned and emergent obstetric airway management, including management of the difficult airway in the parturient. Strategies include assessment of patient risk early in labor, maintaining difficult airway equipment in the labor and delivery suites, conducting simulation scenarios of difficult and failed airway management, and following difficult airway management algorithms.

Abstract:
In Religion and Medicine, Dr. Jeff Levin, distinguished Baylor University epidemiologist, outlines the longstanding history of multifaceted interconnections between the institutions of religion and medicine. He traces the history of the encounter between these two institutions from antiquity through to the present day, highlighting a myriad of contemporary alliances between the faith-based and medical sectors. Religion and Medicine tells the story of: religious healers and religiously branded hospitals and healthcare institutions; pastoral professionals involved in medical missions, healthcare chaplaincy, and psychological counseling; congregational health promotion and disease prevention programs and global health initiatives; research studies on the impact of religious and spiritual beliefs and practices on physical and mental health, well-being, and healing; programs and centers for medical research and education within major universities and academic institutions; religiously informed bioethics and clinical decision-making; and faith-based health policy initiatives and advocacy for healthcare reform. Religion and Medicine is the first book to cover the full breadth of this subject. It documents religion-medicine alliances across religious traditions, throughout the world, and over the course of history. It summarizes a wide range of material of relevance to historians, medical professionals, pastors and theologians, bioethicists, scientists, public health educators, and policymakers. The product of decades of rigorous and focused research, Dr. Levin has produced the most comprehensive history of these developments and the finest introduction to this emerging field of scholarship.

Abstract:
Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is a multi-system disorder, requiring not just respiratory expertise but also management of nutrition, diabetes, musculoskeletal and psychosocial issues. This online resource is a concise companion for all health care professionals who manage patients with CF, and it covers all aspects of care, including both paediatric and adult-specific issues, and summarizes up-to-date literature in a concise and focussed style. There is an emphasis on the practical aspects of management with separate chapters covering the effects of CF in the lung, the microbiology of pulmonary CF, and management of exacerbations. Psychosocial aspects of CF care, end of life care and lung transplantation are also covered, and potential future therapies reviewed. This second edition has been extensively updated to reflect the UK CF Trust Standards of Care, treatment guidelines and Cochrane reviews, and it also includes updates on emerging organisms, an expanded section on physiotherapy, and a new pharmacopeia that covers all common CF medications.

Abstract:
Historically, a key focus of human resource (HR) professionals was developing, implementing, and standardizing HR polices and processes to ensure employees perform in standardized ways. However, the utility of a standardized approach to HR practices has been increasingly questioned over recent decades. In this vein, formalized workforce-differentiation approaches to the segmentation of the workforce based on employees’ competence or the nature of roles performed to reflect differential potential to generate value has emerged as a central element of talent-management strategies. While earlier research on workforce differentiation identified individual talent as the locus of differentiation, more recently, the focus has shifted to strategic or pivotal jobs. This chapter reviews the emergence of workforce differentiation in the academic literature and charts key trends in this regard. The implications of a workforce-differentiation strategy for employees are also considered. The chapter concludes with a consideration of emerging trends and potential avenues for future study.

Strada, E. Alessandra. Palliative Psychology. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780199798551.001.0001.

Abstract:
Palliative Psychology: Clinical Perspectives on an Emerging Specialty is the first book that proposes palliative psychology as a new specialty defining the roles and competencies of psychologists working in the palliative care setting in the US context. As proposed and defined in this book, palliative psychology is a specialty for licensed psychologists interested in providing psychological assessment and interventions to patients with serious and advanced illness and their family caregivers. The psychologist’s involvement can begin after a diagnosis of serious illness and continue during treatment, transition of care, during the dying process, and in bereavement. This book follows the framework developed by the Clinical Practice Guidelines for Quality Palliative Care, which identifies eight domains of specialist palliative care. The chapters of the book explore each of the domains, describing some of the essential knowledge, skills, and attitudes that palliative psychologists should develop to become competent palliative care professionals. Tables and clinical case vignettes are used throughout the book to illustrate important clinical aspects related to the work of palliative psychologists.

Ingles, Jodie, Charlotte Burns, and Laura Yeates. Genetic counselling. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780198784906.003.0145.

Full text
Abstract:
Cardiac genetic counselling is an emerging but important subspecialty. The qualifications of cardiac genetic counsellors depend on the country of practice, but at a minimum they are Master’s-level trained health professionals with expertise in genetics, and are integral members of the multidisciplinary inherited cardiovascular disease clinic. Though the framework is diverse in different countries, key roles include investigation and confirmation of family history details, discussion of inheritance risks and facilitation of cardiac genetic testing, communication with at-risk relatives, and increasingly, curation of genetic test results. The use of next-generation sequencing technologies has seen a recent shift in the uptake of genetic testing, due to greater availability and lowered costs. As these gene tests become more comprehensive, including large panels of genes and even whole exome or whole genome sequencing, the need for cardiac genetic counsellors to provide informed consent, appropriate pre- and post-test genetic counselling, and ongoing curation of the variants identified is evident. Finally, given the improved understanding of the psychological implications of living with a cardiovascular genetic disease, cardiac genetic counsellors are integral in delivering psychosocial care and identifying patients requiring intervention with a clinical psychologist.

Ingelbien, Raphaël, and Susan Galavan, eds. Figures of Authority in Nineteenth-Century Ireland. Liverpool University Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.3828/liverpool/9781789622409.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
This interdisciplinary collection investigates the forms that authority assumed in nineteenth-century Ireland, the relations they bore to international redefinitions of authority, and Irish contributions to the reshaping of authority in the modern age. At a time when age-old sources of social, political, spiritual and cultural authority were eroded in the Western world, Ireland witnessed both the restoration of older forms of authority and the rise of figures who defined new models of authority in a democratic age. Using new comparative perspectives as well as archival resources in a wide range of fields, eleven chapters show how new authorities were embodied in emerging types of politicians, clerics and professionals, and in material extensions of their power in visual, oral and print cultures. Their analyses often eerily echo twenty-first-century debates about populism, the suspicion towards scholarly and intellectual expertise, and the role of new technologies and forms of association in contesting and recreating authority. Several contributions highlight the role of emotion in the way authority was deployed by figures ranging from O’Connell to Catholic priests and W.B. Yeats, foreshadowing the perceived rise of emotional politics in our own age. This volume stresses that many contested forms of authority that now look ‘traditional’ emerged from 19th-century crises and developments, as did the challenges that undermine authority.
