Abstract:
Research focused on mental health-related issues is vital to the modern person’s life. Specific phobias are part of the anxiety disorder umbrella and they are distressing afflictions. Emetophobia is the rarely known, yet fairly common and highly disruptive specific phobia of vomiting. Unlike other phobias, emetophobia is triggered not only by the object of the specific fear, but also by verbal and written mentions of said object. This paper proposes and compares ten neural network-based architectures that discern between triggering and non-triggering groups of written words. An interface is cr

The fear of vomiting (i.e., Emetophobia) causes substantial distress for affected individuals, and is associated with hypervigilance to somatic sensations, panic attacks, and behavioral avoidance. Interventions for Emetophobia have traditionally relied heavily on exposure to vomit, vomiting, and vomit-related cues, providing some challenges in identifying appropriate graded exposures for Emetophobia due to medical and hygiene concerns. Recent efforts have been made to treat psychopathology transdiagnostically; however, very few efforts have been made to reduce Emetophobia symptoms in such a fa

Abstract:
Emetophobia, or a specific phobia of vomiting, is an underresearched disorder characterized by extensive avoidance and safety-seeking behaviors. Extant literature has primarily focused on online support groups and qualitative investigations, thereby limiting the generalizability of results. As such, this study sought to examine the clinical correlates, phenomenology, and impairment related to emetophobia in 436 undergraduate students. About 5% of the sample exhibited significant emetophobia symptoms (n = 21), with all participants in this subsample reporting an age of onset prior to adulthood.

Abstract. Objective: Emetophobia is the specific fear of vomiting that usually commences during childhood and adolescence. Cognitive behavioral therapy aims to expose patients to vomiting. In this paper, a newly developed metacognitive concept and treatment approach to this disorder is illustrated within a small case series. Method: Three adolescent girls with emetophobia were treated with metacognitive therapy (MCT). Measures of anxiety, worry, depression, and metacognitions before and after the treatment were documented. Results: All patients recovered during the course of 8 to 11 sessions,

Abstract:
A disproportionate fear of vomiting, or emetophobia, is a chronic and disabling condition which is characterized by a tendency to avoid a wide array of situations or activities that might increase the risk of vomiting. Unlike many other subtypes of specific phobia, emetophobia is fairly difficult to treat. In fact, there are only a few published cases in the literature. This paper presents a case of a 46-year old woman with emetophobia in which a trauma-focused treatment approach was applied; that is, an approach particularly aimed at processing disturbing memories of a series of events which

Abstract:
This research program (EmetStudy) extends emetophobia-related knowledge in seven key areas and achieves three milestones in the treatment of emetophobia. The first milestone is that it is the largest emetophobia treatment study conducted to date. There was a total of 107 participants completed treatment using an online cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) program, administered by a single therapist over a 12 month period. Second, two new measures of emetophobia related symptoms were developed and validated using a large pool (N = 459) of emetophobia treatment seekers. Finally, EmetStudy led to

Abstract This chapter covers the epidemiology, risk factors, presentation, and treatment for eating disorders that have not, or currently do not, have formal diagnostic criteria under the DSM or ICD. It covers emetophobia, which is currently classified as an anxiety disorder, but is often associated with food restriction; diabulimia, where the deliberate omission of insulin therapy in those with Type 1 Diabetes is used to reduce weight; ‘drunkorexia’ where compensatory food restriction or vomiting is used to counteract the calories associated with alcohol consumption; muscle dysmorphia; and orthorexia and its association with obsessive compulsive disorder.

Abstract:
Some individuals with specific phobia of vomiting (SPOV) (emetophobia) may present with disordered eating, including food restriction and weight loss. Such cases may be misdiagnosed as anorexia nervosa (AN), thus complicating case conceptualization, formulation, and treatment. This chapter outlines the clinical features of SPOV, including those that overlap with AN and other disorders. Treatment approaches and their evidence base are discussed, and a clinical case example of an individual with SPOV and disordered eating is presented. More research is needed to address the overlap between eating disorders and SPOV in order to better distinguish overlaps in presentation and to develop treatments that effectively target the central fears in these cases.
