Abstract:
The design of current electromyography (EMG) systems focuses on specific applications. One design focuses on the use of bipolar electrodes to monitor a single muscle group. Several of these electrodes can then be used to monitor different muscles on the body simultaneously. Another design places many electrodes in an array on a limb or over a single muscle. One cannot be used for the other. Additionally the design of an EMG system must account for several sources of noise that can be orders of magnitude larger than the EMG signal itself. Pattern recognition (PR)-based EMG control has been proposed to improve the functional performance of prostheses. Abstract:
Surface electromyography (SEMG) has been widely used in functional measurement of lumbar muscles, which can be applied for low back pain (LBP) rehabilitation assessment. Previous study has reported the application of SEMG topographic analysis for obtaining an objective and quantitative assessment of LBP. However, the previous SEMG topographic analysis was performed manually and offlined, which was time consuming and with big inter-observer variations. This will limit the use of this technique for practical assessment of LBP and rehabilitation. Therefore, the objectives of this thesis are to d

Abstract:
This study investigated a series of independent unassisted and device-assisted transfers from a wheelchair to vehicle mock-up and vice versa while simultaneously capturing kinematic, kinetic and electromyographic (EMG) data of impaired volunteers. The study provides a venue for observation and evaluation of upper extremity (UE) joint stresses, muscular force and functional demands associated with transfers in persons with spinal cord injury (SCI) to ultimately prevent UE injury, minimize excessive stress, preserve functionality and limit pain. If people with SCI lose function of their UEs, due
