Abstract:
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to examine the dimensionality of emic (culturally specific) organizational citizenship behavior (OCB) of Mexican professionals. Design/methodology/approach – This study considered the collectivistic cultural background of Mexican professional employees and developed a framework based on the emic (culturally specific) dimensions of OCB. Findings – Based on exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses, the authors find that the emic OCB of Mexican professionals is characterized by five dimensions: collegial harmony, organizational camaraderie, professional development, organizational faithfulness, and protecting company resources. Originality/value – The findings also offer incremental contributions to OCB research. In order to correctly capture the entire phenomena of OCB in different cultures, researchers often focus on the emic (specific/cultural unique) approach. Along this vein, the authors identified the Mexican OCB dimensions in an emic approach.

Abstract:
This article addresses Governance through Corporate Social Responsibility as a Key Organizational Principle. The notion of etic and emic depicts the definitional status of CSR. Etic represents the universal recognition of CSR and emic represents the unique implementation of CSR in an organization. This article proposes that organizations behave like complex adaptive systems with complex interactions needing socially responsible strategies. This article describes French based SUEZ’s emic responses to achieve responsible Governance in terms of CSR. A recipe or menu approach to Governance through CSR is inappropriate. SUEZ has acted as a model for recognizing etic and emic differentiation, using CSR as the Key Organizing Principle that allows adaptability in a socially responsible way and developed specific guidelines incorporating the needs of diverse stakeholders.

Abstract:
An emic perspective, or insiders’ perspective, has been widely employed in social interactionism-inspired qualitative studies. This view claims that any interactional behavior can be examined from within the system. Applied to research in which talk is central, this view requires data to come from the participants who are involved in the talk because they document their social actions to each other within the details of their interaction. Researchers can access the perspective by adopting the same perspective as the participants. As a result, the findings yield high internal and ecological validity. Following this perspective, this study, which explores silence, or, to be more specific, gap, in institutionalized talk, demonstrates how interactional data is produced and analyzed by the participants as the talk emerges. This study shows that an emic view allows researchers to indirectly involve participants in the analysis and can be an alternative potential tool in descriptive communication research.

Abstract:
The Middle to Upper Palaeolithic transition is seen as an important research focus and key to understanding issues surrounding Neanderthal and modern human interactions. Because of this focus upon human type transitional industries without associated human fossil evidence have been marginalised within the debate. This perspective can be termed etic, looking at overall patterns and millennial timescales to answer ‘big’ questions. In contrast my research could be termed emic, using a small collection of ‘transitional’ stone tools to explore the perspective of the producers and users. Human type is not considered relevant here. This approach has allowed a shift in scale; from millennial and pan-European to seasonal and the uplands that now constitute Britain. To explore this emic perspective experimental production has been used to make material a manufacturing process. Metrical, formal and typological analysis has been applied to the archaeological type fossil corpus to more fully comprehend variability. Together these approaches have been used to construct a nuanced and comprehensive châine operatoire model for the industry. This model allowed comparative analysis to derive new understandings from old and new archaeological collections from three sites. Resultant material and behavioural patterns have been interpreted within their particular landscape and general faunal contexts. Emergent themes have been integrated into a seasonal structure to create the desired emic narrative. This process has revealed a maintainable, repairable and adaptable technology used to manage the predictable unpredictability associated with the hunting of migrating large fauna through a long summer season and in uplands of known and unknown stone resources.

Elias, Rodas Dina M. "Looking through their eyes: an emic approach to community assets and strengths for African American youth." Diss., Wichita State University, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10057/5129.

Full text
Abstract:
The goal of this study was to explore the community assets and strengths identified by African American youth that can contribute to positive youth development, taking into consideration the lived experiences and meanings for youth and their cultural characteristics. This study used a semi-participatory approach and a mixed methods design that included survey, focus groups and photovoice. The data obtained through each method was analyzed separately and collectively, in order to contrast and compare the different data sets. The findings suggest that some individual and community assets and strengths identified by African American youth were similar to other assets and strengths that other models of positive youth development and African American youth development have identified. The findings also suggest the dynamic function of some assets. The discussion focused on that dynamic function that some community assets have in moderating and/or mediating the presence and effect of other individual and community assets.

Najmi, Setareh. "A Qualitative Exploration of International Students’ Experience of Counselling Services at University." Thèse, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/24305.

Full text
Abstract:
This phenomenological qualitative study aimed to forefront international students’ experiences of receiving counselling services in a university setting. Three international students, recruited from two universities in eastern Canada using criterion sampling, were interviewed. Semi-structured interviews were audio-recorded and transcribed for analysis. In this phenomenological qualitative study, within- and between-person analyses were conducted for three transcribed interviews, from which eight main themes emerged: (a) openness towards seeking counselling, (b) hesitancy towards seeking counselling, (c) helpful aspects of counselling, (d) hindering aspects of counselling, (e) positive aspects of therapeutic relationship, (f) hindrances to therapeutic relationship, (g) counsellor’s cultural awareness, and (h) counsellor’s limited cultural awareness. The themes can be understood, and are explicated along four dimensions: seeking counselling, perceptions of counselling effectiveness, therapeutic relationship, and culture in counselling. The results from this study provide insight into international students’ counselling needs, expectations, and experiences. Special attention is given to the perceived expression of in-session counsellor cultural awareness and discussed using the integrated etic-emic framework. Implications for counsellors and university counselling services, limitations of the study, and recommendations for future research are provided.

Abstract:
National cultures play a critical role in effective leadership and organisational success in international businesses. Contemporary organisations are therefore challenged by cross-cultural leadership needs to address increasing diversity. In the past decades, there has been a growing interest in studies of non-Western leadership. Recent papers have focused particularly on leadership in the Asia-Pacific region. This paper compares leadership in China and New Zealand, based on the data collected by using the GLOBE (Global Leadership and Organisational Behaviour Effectiveness) project leadership questionnaire. In addition, the paper reviews the main findings of previous research in order to investigate the similarities and differences in preferred leadership behaviours/characteristics in both cultures, while attempting to examine the consistency of current findings against the previous GLOBE studies. Significant differences of leadership behaviours between China and New Zealand have been identified. This paper generally supports the findings of previous GLOBE studies that charismatic/value-based leadership is the universally contributing factor towards outstanding leadership and self-protective leadership is the universally negative factor against leadership excellence. Findings in this paper may contribute to further understanding of leadership practice in these two countries. Future research should be undertaken to examine the effects of cultural differences on organisational practice by a more comprehensive research method.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation discusses immunity measurement and improvement of intelligent components in the automotive field. The wide frequency band and the failure criterion to represent the behavior of components under pressure of interference are the difficulties in the immunity measurement. The other main task in this dissertation is to improve the immunity of components without adding too much cost. The dissertation is divided into three chapters. The first chapter concentrates on immunity measurement. The injection circuit is important to the in situ test bench because it limits the measurement bandwidth and the accuracy of the measurement. An on board on board bias tee extends the measurement bandwidth from 15 kHz to 1 GHz. A measurement algorithm, that avoids the non-uniform comparison between the sampling data and the reference signal, improves the accuracy of the immunity result. Two failure ceriteria can identify the linear and nonlinear distortion of an analogue digital converter (ADC). The second chapter presents interference signal detection and compensation technique. A simple technique is used to detect the continuous wave interference (CWI) on the power supply and at the analogue input port of the microcontroller without adding too many components. The simulation of the schematic circuit and the measurement can validate the effectiveness of the method. Finally, based on the detection result; a compensation technique compensates both the interference signal on the power supply and at the input port of the microcontroller. The third chapter is composed of three sections. The first section introduces the defensive software and hardware methods to protect the microcontroller. Then the second section presents the application of the interference detection technique to improve the immunity of components in the automotive field. Finally the third section shows the influence of interference signal on a proportional integral derivative (PID) control system; the proportional integral derivative control system is modelled in Matlab. The interference detection is used in the fault tolerant control field to avoid the false fault detection.

Liu, Qian. "Modular Approach for Characterizing and Modeling Conducted EMI Emissions in Power Converters." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/29633.

Full text
Abstract:
With the development of power electronics, electromagnetic interference (EMI) and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) issues have become more and more important for both power converter designers and customers. This dissertation studies EMI noise emission characterization and modeling in power converters. A modular-terminal-behavioral (MTB) equivalent EMI noise source modeling approach is proposed. This work is the first to systematically develop a 3-terminal EMI noise source model for a switching phase-leg device module. Each module is modeled as pairs of equivalent noise current sources and source impedances. Although the proposed MTB modeling approach applies the linear circuit theory to a semiconductor switching device, which exhibits nonlinear behavior during switching transients, the analysis and experiments show that the nonlinearity has negligible practical effect on the modeling methodology. The validation range of the modeling methodology has been analyzed. One of the differences between the proposed MTB model and the other state-of-the-art models is that the MTB model characterizes and predicts the CM and DM noise simultaneously. The inseparable high-frequency CM and DM noise characteristics contributed by the source impedance and propagation path are analyzed. A comprehensive evaluation of different EMI noise source modeling approaches according to the criteria of accuracy, feasibility and generality has been presented. Results show that the MTB modeling approach is more accurate, feasible and general than other approaches. The modular and terminal characteristics of the MTB noise source model are verified in two more complicated cases. One example is the application of the MTB equivalent source model in a half-bridge AC converter with variable switching conditions. Although the MTB model is derived under a certain operating condition, the models under different conditions can be combined together to predict the EMI noise for the converter with variable switching conditions. Another example is the application of the MTB equivalent source model in multi-phase-leg converters. The EMI noise of a full-bridge converter is predicted based on the MTB equivalent source model of one phase-leg module. The implementation procedures and results for both applications are verified by the experiment. The applicability of the MTB model in different type of converters is discussed. Based on the MTB model, EMI noise management is explored. The parametric study based on the MTB model is demonstrated by selecting DC-link decoupling capacitors for voltage source converter (VSC). The EMI effect of a decoupling capacitor for a device s safe operation is analyzed, and this analysis shows the terminal characteristics of the MTB model. Both the EMI and voltage overshoot are predicted by the MTB model. A completed converter-level EMI model can be derived based on the noise source model and propagation path model. This model makes it possible to optimize the EMI filter design and study the EMI noise interactions between converters in a power conversion system.

Abstract:
AbstractIn this introductory chapter the authors discuss ways of studying change that go beyond a chronology of events and sweeping laws of evolution and that take into account the ways in which people live through, experience, desire, create, and challenge change. How can we‚ at the same time‚ gain a longue durée perspective on societal transformations and give a truthful account of the ways our different interlocutors describe, name, and understand the changes they are living and the kinds of future they expect? The authors first situate this question within broader disciplinary debates, focusing particularly on debates in anthropology and its focus on studying history and change through ethnography. Ethnography is a crucial instrument for uncovering and analyzing the relationship between emic and etic perspectives of change, as well as the complex and often contradictory interplay of continuity and change beyond linear periodization and teleological presuppositions. The authors argue for a combination of multiple methods of investigation that borrow from both ethnography and other methods of data collection and analysis, and for an analytical framework that articulates three levels of analysis: the unit of analysis, the empirical data and the metanarratives of change.

Abstract:
Abstract Mathematical modeling of neurons is an essential tool to investigate neuronal activity alongside with experimental approaches. However, the conventional modeling framework to simulate neuronal dynamics and extracellular potentials makes several assumptions that might need to be revisited for some applications. In this chapter we apply the EMI model to investigate the ephaptic effect and the effect of the extracellular probes on the measured potential. Finally, we introduce reduced EMI models, which provide a more computationally efficient framework for simulating neurons with complex morphologies.
