Full textThis study is based on a fieldwork in three regions, Rennes, Grenoble and Montreal, where Lao refugees are located. In this various contexts, the Lao have to cope with social and cultural change that leads them to organise in order to facilitate their resettlement. Various cultural conflicts and political compromises influence the organisational dynamic : opposition between generations, rivalries between traditional leaders and intermediaries, the latter being more involved with members of the dominant group, tensions between those who support a strict Lao social hierarchy and those who are in favour of a more democratic "horizontal" solidarity. Underlying each of these conflicts, there are opposing definitions of ethnicity and of group belonging. In the above-mentioned comparative study, we have tried to understand the impact of the urban context, and above the urban, the national context, on the collective functioning of an ethnic minority. At first, we compare the Lao of Rennes, capital city of Bretagne, where only a few immigrants live, with those of Grenoble, an industrialized city that has a long tradition of hosting immigrants. Secondly, the study of the Lao minority in Montreal allows us a more thorough comparison, the national context being different. After having started with a qualitative methodology that implies observation and in depth interviews, we progressively adopt a more global view of the situations : comparing ideologies of national construction and the representations of the other ; evaluating the impact of immigration policies in the two regions ; describing constraints entailed by each economical and political local context ; observing how inter-ethnic relations occur in each situation

Full textBetween 1965 and 1975, the Franco-Quebec cooperation allowed migration in Montreal and Quebec, several thousand French, employed as a secondary school teacher and university. Since 1990, Qebec's immigration policy actively conducts an increase in French entries on the provincial territory. Of French migrants less specialized professional than previous but more numerous, currently 120,000, are the first national group to migrate to China and Algeria. Our anthropological study of French migrants in Montreal required a redefinition of the field of migration studies. Transatlantic situation and "post-colonial" makes us think about multiple identities that are told in the speeches of French and Qebecers. Being an immigrant, for French in Montreal, is to confront the local representation of the migrant. Inherited differing figures of a pedagogy and a national historical narrative built locally. Since the 1990s, a large increase in the number of french living in the city is particularly observed in the Plateau Mont-Royal. Presence linked to the old gentrification of the neighborhood, described as "a corner of Urope" in America, a cozy village. Phenomenon renewed by the trade activity "French" (bakery, restaurant, etc. ) which is often the economic niche in which rush migrants. An imaginary America and Europe respectively animate each of the protagonist in the original creation of new links "citizens" between neighbors. The French "one and indivible" in trying this American dream earth community. Quebecers hope for some, through this presence, the advent of a sovereign republic imitated the French model

Full textCette recherche a pour but de définir et de décrire les facteurs linguistiques et sociolinguistiques de l’intégration des immigrants dans le contexte multilingue qu’est Montréal. Elle se fonde sur un corpus d’entretiens effectués avec des immigrants, suivant les cours de francisation gouvernementaux. Notre travail repose principalement sur la notion – à la fois politique et sociolinguistique – d’intégration linguistique. Nous étudions les politiques de gestion de l’immigration et de la pluralité linguistique qui influencent l’intégration des immigrants dans une société d’installation culturellement diversifiée et francophone. Notre démarche est à la fois macrosociolinguistique et microsociolinguistique, aussi bien dans la problématique que dans la méthodologie appliquée. Nous cherchons à apprécier l’impact des mesures de politique linguistique sur la préservation du français au Québec en nous intéressant aux perceptions des immigrants concernant les fonctions sociales des langues à Montréal. La francisation étant présentée comme la mesure politique la plus significative, nous nous intéressons au contenu des cours, sur le plan linguistique et culturel. Nous déterminons le niveau de compétence que les immigrants-apprenants atteignent à la fin de leur formation à l’aide d’une grille originale d’observables énonciatifs, structurels et normatifs. Après avoir évalué le degré d’autonomie linguistique des sujets, nous décrivons leur mobilité sociale en étudiant la fréquence et le type d’interactions dans lesquelles les immigrants ont l’occasion d’utiliser les différentes langues de leur répertoire langagier, en vue de déterminer leur intégration sociale. A partir de ces données, nous mettons en évidence l’influence du degré de maîtrise linguistique sur le sentiment d’intégration. Les résultats montrent que le français jouit d’une vitalité linguistique importante. De par ses fonctions véhiculaires et sociales, le français est généralement la langue de communication première dans toutes les sphères de la vie sociale à Montréal. De ce fait, la capacité de communiquer, grâce à l’appropriation de la variété standard du français, est un facteur linguistique de l’intégration. Or, à la fin de la formation en français, les immigrants ont des compétences linguistiques et sociolinguistiques qui leur permettent seulement une mobilité linguistique et sociale limitées. Ce facteur linguistique doit être obligatoirement accompagné d’autres éléments intégrateurs qui constituent les étapes suivantes du processus d’intégration.
Linguistic and Sociolinguistic Factors of Integration within a Multilingual Context : the case of immigrants in Montreal The purpose of this study is to define and describe the linguistic and sociolinguistic factors of integration of immigrants within the multilingual context of Montreal. Based on a corpus of interviews (discussions, conversations) with immigrants enrolled in government-sponsored French language training programs, our work focuses mainly on linguistic integration, understood here as both a political and sociolinguistic notion. We examine the policies of immigration management and linguistic plurality which influence the assimilation of immigrants into a francophone and culturally diversified society. Our approach to the research subject and the methodology applied to it is both macro-sociolinguistic and micro-sociolinguistic. We attempt to determine the impact of linguistic policy measures on preserving the use of the French language. To do this, we study how immigrants perceive the social functions of languages in Montreal. Since francization is presented as the most significant political measure, we analyze training course content, on a cultural and linguistic level. In order to determine the level of skill obtained by the immigrants at the end of their training program, we use an original scale measuring observable cognitive, structural and normative items. After assessing immigrants’ degree of linguistic autonomy, we describe their social mobility to see how well they are actually assimilated into the francophone living environment. We analyze the type and frequency of the interactions in which immigrant are called upon to use the different languages making up their language repertoires. This data allows us to show how immigrants’ command of the French language affects their feeling with regard to social integration. Our results demonstrate that the linguistic vitality of the french-speaking community in Montreal is increasing. Indeed, French is the primary language of communication in all aspects of social life. The ability to communicate easily in standard French is, therefore, a linguistic factor contributing to successful social and cultural integration. However, at the completion of their French language training program, immigrants’ linguistic and sociolinguistic skills allow them only limited linguistic and social mobility. This linguistic facet of cultural integration must necessarily be accompanied by other means to facilitate and consolidate the process of integration.

Full textThis study offers a critical analysis of the Canadian immigration system through a detailed examination of the process of an immigrant’s selection from within the category of “skilled workers.” It questions the relationship between the Canadian and Quebecois society and immigration by focusing on the way the state operates through the management of the exclusion/inclusion of immigrants, while trying to understand what is at stake during the immigration process by underlining the effects which that unfold upon those involved in this process. Specifically, the study seeks to see how various representations of the immigrant have crystallized over the time, in turn influencing current representations. It is not a matter of questioning the conditions of their emergence, but rather to see the effects they produce. It is also important to identify the range of strategies and practices at work in the immigration process. Starting with a particular case, it is possible to highlight wider dynamics and make apparent the links between global trends in immigration (commodification and securitization) and their articulations with a specific national policy. This research is articulated around three approaches: an anthropology of institutions, an anthropology of the state, bureaucracy and bureaucrats and an anthropology of policy. The intricacies between these approaches places the focus on several constitutive elements of the apparatus surrounding immigration, in particular Canadian and Quebecois immigration institutions, legislative and statutory texts, policies, speeches, diverse measures and procedures implemented, the practices of employees within these institutions, etc. Through a “problematisation” of the relationship to immigration, the aim is to retrace the transformations and movements of this relationship and to recast it in its historicity so as to see how immigration and immigrants are constituted as subjects. More succinctly, it is a questioning of the historic horizon within which the current management of immigration takes shape. This understanding of the implementation of migratory control in Canada is also based on an examination of current immigration policies. It seeks to highlight the implicit categories associated with the constitution of the “subject-immigrant,” starting from bureaucratic and administrative categorizations, in order to question the construction of polarized categories – “commodity” and “threat” – accompanying the “manufacturing” of the “perfect” immigrant. The ethnographic data provided allows an understanding of the strategies and daily practices that are materialized within immigration institutions in order to highlight the effects they produce on immigrants – processes of desubjectivation/resubjectivation, negation of personal life history, reduction to a simple preestablished category – and to examine the micropolitics at work. Finally, the arguments are recast into a wider logics of contemporary migration management. The commodification and securitization of immigration are effectively at the heart of the apparatus surrounding immigration, the “actualisation principles” of the migratory management that allow the indirect regulation of migratory flows that facilitate circulation deemed “beneficial” for Canada, while, at the same time, restricting those who could be “threatening”. In short, this research allows us to understand what consists of the management of immigration in Canada.

Full textEthno-cultural diversity has become the social and political reality of Western democracies. The effects of that diversity on the idea of citizenship and national identity raises new questions: as institutions struggle to adapt to its new circumstances, debates, tensions, and sometimes violence arise. Canada constitutes a particularly interesting case study because of its complex diversity on the one hand and because of its apparent success in dealing with the tensions between majority and minorities on the other hand. Diversity in Canada is twofold, as it is both multicultural and plurinational. It gives rise to what is called in this work the “grand Canadian preoccupations” linked to Québec separatism, Native nationalism and ethno-cultural diversity. This thesis contends that these Grand preoccupations are the result of a conflict between a fear of fragmentation in the majority and a desire for citizenship amongst minorities, that is to say a desire to be included into the Canadian project. In order to define and analyze the concept of desire for citizenship, this work uses analytical tools developed in political philosophy, social psychology and post-colonial studies, as well as 11 interviews with Canadian participants. Through an inductive approach, the concept of desire for citizenship is asserted as a useful theoretical tool to take into account the complexity of human desire in the study of diversity and citizenship

Full textEvery year since the early 2000s, about 3,500 French citizens settled in Quebec under a permanent resident visa. The French citizens are immigrants of choice for Quebec, since their income revenues are in fact higher than the national average income, and they also benefit, since 2008, from a greater recognition of their diplomas obtained in France. In fact, French candidates seem to gather all the conditions to settle and integrate in a sustainable manner in the “Belle Province”. However, the studied phenomenon - namely the return in France of the French immigrants - is not so new. Indeed, in 2013 according to the Ministry of Immigration and Cultural Communities, France is the leading country of birth for recent immigrants (economical sector) in admissions. Nevertheless, French immigrants are also the most likely to return to France or to continue on their migration route. The communication and intercultural relations during the pre-migratory phase can influence the future immigrants to either settle temporarily or permanently. But how can this intercultural communication influence future immigrants about their desire to migrate, prepare their migration plans, and their integration? What may be the influence of this intercultural communication within the integration process and the development of a sense of belonging towards the host society? The progressive construction of the Promised Land and the migration imaginary also determine either the success or failure of immigration

Full textThe St. Maximilian Kolbe Polish parish in Mississauga was founded in 1979 by Polish-Canadian families who were moving into the western suburbs of Toronto. The unexpected influx of Polish refugees at the beginning of the 1980s, due to the declaration of Martial Law in Poland in December 1981, changed the demographic composition of the parish from Polish-Canadian to Polish. The profile and attitude of the Solidarnosc immigrants were different from those of the former waves of Polish immigrants in that the newcomers were not particularly grateful for the hospitality offered to them, were demanding more from the social services available and did not suffer from any sort of inferiority complex in relation to the mainstream Canadian population. During the 1970s and 1980s, the country of Canada was also going through a transition period by passing multicultural legislation which decreed that although there were two official languages - French and English - there was no official culture

Full textThe Breton migration to the American continent is noticeable considering its number and its continuity. According to Le Clech, pioneer and specialist of the Breton migration, 55 000 Breton people have emigrated to the USA and 45 000 to Canada between 1880 and 1970. Some studies were carried out in France and Canada, by historians, which described the repeated arrivals of Breton people in North America, the reasons or factors for their migration, the places for their settlement and their social and professional reintegration. Nevertheless, these studies are more focused on the migration to the USA, while they are nearly the same number of Breton migrants in Canada. The originality of my research lies in the chosen field of observation, which is the province of Quebec, Canada. Lndeed, the French Canadian who live there, as called today Quebecois, are a minority group who was subjected similare pressure toward their language and culture as the Breton people. Consequently, this field appeared to be pertinent to analyse the relations established between the migrants and this minority group. On the other hand, what interested me in the study of the migration of the Bretons was the discovery of the way their sentiment to belonging to the regional Breton culture, in other word their “Bretonness”, was taken from the territory of origin and relocated in the destination country. I consider therefore the migration as an experimental situation, through which I tried to analyse how a cultural belonging is unbuilt, rebuilt or built. In other words, why and how some Breton migrants in Quebec express, promote, or even recreate their cultural belonging 6000 km far from their territory of birth territory? This research allowed me to throw light of course the different expressions of cultrural belonging in a situation of geographical mobility. It also allowed me to contribute to the knowledge and the understanding of the belonging to other cultural communities and therefore to participate in enriching theknowledge in the field anthropology and ethnology of migrations

Full textThe forced migration of refugees from National-Socialism - often called "exiles" - brought to Canada a small, but particularly complex, wave of 6,000 German-speaking migrants. Whereas the lives of those famous émigrés who went to the U. S. Is well-known, the trajectories of "ordinary people" in Canada is not. Given Canada's restrictive immigration policy in the 1930s, those who managed to enter - Jews, social-democrats, interned refugees - used the system's loopholes. This research addresses a double agenda: studying German-speaking refugees from Nazism as they settled in Canada, and reconstructing Canadian society's response to that specific immigration. It is centred on acculturation and identity-building mechanisms, as well as community-based integration, crystallisation of ethnic memories, cultural transfer, and inter-generational transmission. Our studies of space and characters search for the signs producing the effect of the work on readers and causing its reception. They reveal a vision of Caribbean and South America as hostile places, where multi-ethnic nations are doomed to failure, of Canada as a refuge where Anglo European humanistic values are threatened by immigrant confinement to community. Our unveiling of the articulation between the reception Bissoondath's work and the reform of multiculturalism reveals that his access to the mainstrearn results from two causes. First, Bissoondath benefits from the institutionalisation of multiculturalism in the field of literature that promotes works by visible minorities ' writers. Then, its reception derives from a convergence between the ideology developed in its text about multiculturalism, celebrating Anglo Canadian values, and the re-defining of Canadian citizenship, that give precedence to common Canadian values over what make Canadians different. This situation of Bisoondath's work, exceptional in the late 80's, becomes commonplace by the of the 90's as it's publishing coincided with the emergence of a new Canadian literary landscape in which distinctions between mainstrearn and minority writers are abolished

The Changing Dynamics of the Indexing Theory: A Content Analysis ofThe Globe and Mailand The Toronto Star, ” is dealing with the theory of indexing in a Canadian context. Therefore, the main problem illustrated by Bennett and Pfetsch (2018) is that indexing theory removes “alternative voices, ” instead of including these “new” voices in order to balance the sources. In this new fractured environment, it is more complex than before to balance different perspectives and opinions because of the involvement of different actors in the political arena. The main argument of this thesis is that it is imperative totest the theory of indexation and to adapt its central elements to the new political environment. This means an inclusion of this new environment to the basic assumptions that will include alternative narratives. It is in this context that we decided to analyze the issue of immigration policies in Canada and its indexing by the media. Consequently, this thesis is devoted to an analysis of the relationship between the media and official political authorities in Canada, in particular, by addressing the question of the place of alternative narratives in Canadian journalistic discourse.

Full textThis dissertation analyzes the public and private policies carried out in France and in Canada, specially in the province of Quebec, to host Jews from three North African countries – Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia, between the 1950s and the end of the 1970s. Facing the arrival of migrants where French nationals, but also Tunisian and Moroccan (citizens) , Jewish organizations had to rethink their relationship with the state and reasses their migratory and social policies. Thus, this dissertation considers the nature of the assistance provided by a minority group’s associations towards a population of migrants. The relationship between French and Canadian private networks and the state differed, but in both cases, the associations found space to implement social policies directed towards migrants, identified as co-ethics. The redefinition of the roles played by civil society organizations and the states has directed consequences on social intervention practices. This dissertation examines the discrepancies between policies and practices, as well as the process by which professional knowledge is adapted to the two national contexts. To that end, two social services will be studied comparatively : the Comité d’Action Sociale Israélite de Paris and Jewish Immigrant Aid Services in Montreal. Full textThis thesis attempts to analyse a century of associative life in Canada by examining the evolution of collective identity expressions and political mobilizations by the Arab minority. Covering the period from the arrival of the first migrants from the Machrek at the end of the 19th century to the 1970s, it deepens empirical knowledge ofa minority which often comes under scrutiny in Canada, but whose history, formation and evolution have scarcely been studied by historiography. The inquiry focuses on the public visibility of the Arab minority through its organizational dynamics, the formulation of a collective discourse, political mobilization and interactions with the Canadian state. This requires questioning the history of an external visibility, challenging it with the image and voice that the actors attempted to raise by themselves and about themselves. Who is defined as Arab and who considers themselves to be Arab? Depending on the period, the state, media and various social actors classified each group of migrants and their descendants in differentiated ways. Ln parallel, how did the group studied, through its collective organizations, chose to name Itself? The analysis of associationism recovers the voice of actors who showed a desire to organize, express themselves and mobilize in the Canadian public. Full textImmigration of professionals in occupations with labour shortages is an important part of Canada's social and economic development strategies, but concerns about quality have created barriers to recognition. This is an interpretive, instrumental case study of participant perspectives on quality in prior learning assessment and recognition (PLAR) for internationally educated nurses seeking registration in the province of Ontario, Canada. A theoretical framework comprised of four complementary theoretical perspectives is used as a lens trough wich to examine the research issue. Document analysis and semi-structured interviews were used to collect data. The results reveal complex relations within and across the education and the nursing profession's communities of practice that operate as vehicles for negotiating shared understandings and power. This thesis argues that quality is a socially constructed concept that requires the active engagement ok key communities for development of quality indicators. Using Baartman et al. 's (2007) quality criteria for competency-based assessment as a framework for negotiating the meaning of quality in PLAR is a reasonable strategy for the nursing community to explore

Full textLa présente recherche est née de la volonté de comprendre si les lois sur l’immigration par le parrainage affectent ou non les relations entre les hommes et les femmes qui choisissent d’immigrer au Canada par cette filière. À première vue cette loi, qui facilite le regroupement familial pour des résidents permanents ou des citoyens, pourrait paraître positive, pour les femmes notamment. Les récits des dix femmes qui ont participé à ma recherche montrent qu’au contraire, la situation est extrêmement complexe et mène parfois à des formes variées de violence, en même temps qu’elle contribue à créer des relations asymétriques et des inégalités au sein des couples. Les entrevues semi-dirigées auprès de ces immigrantes parrainées habitant la Ville de Québec montrent clairement que ce processus d’immigration a ses particularités et que les effets sur leur vie ne sont pas que positifs.

Full textThe state of the current political climate, which is prioritizing safe migration policies that benefit both the host country and the newcomer, is a topic of both debate and discussion. Despite having distinct policies towards immigration, Canada and France share similar problems relating to language learning, integration, positioning, and identity. In this qualitative action research study, we compare the points of view of important actors involved in this discourse, teachers and administrators, and newcomers themselves. Combining the results of an online survey with one-on-one open questioned interviews designed for both participant groups, we have observed the following: The programs developed for newcomers have limited foundations and influence relating to the successful integration. Regardless of language level, a key component to belonging, integration, confidence in the target language, and having a voice is reciprocity. Having a native speaker social network that accepts the newcomer and is “willing to catch them” appears to be paramount

Full textTechnologies are omnipresent in our society, from social media, to satellite television and Internet broadcasting and shape the way we live, work, and interact. It has also transformed the international migration, making it possible for migrants to maintain strong ties between their host society and country of origin. Many studies have been conducted on the usage of ICT by migrants in the host country; however, there is limited research on the use of ICT by refugees during their migratory paths. This study focuses on the analysis of media practices and uses of social media by Somali refugees from Somalia to France (Rennes, Angers and Paris). In addition, this field survey is multi-sited and covers the relationship between the media practices and identity reconstruction of Somalis in two Canadian cities, Ottawa and Toronto. Despite the emergence of studies on the Canadian Somali community, very little research exists on the analysis of media practices Somalis, particularly in the domestic context. The methodological approach used in this study is based on an epistemological posture via the tools of critical ethnography and multi-sited. Critical ethnography aims to address the social and economic inequalities in which Somalis live in France and Canada. The results of this research show that the refugees, who are often labelled as being under-equipped with limited knowledge of computers, know how to use social media (Facebook, Youtube) and instant communication tools (Skype, MSN Messenger,VoIP) and information technologies and communication. We will also see how the collective use of YouTube videos, television and radio by Somalis in Canada and France has a complementary role to that of the institutions responsible for safeguarding the memory and transmission of cultural identity. The production and reception of video, radio and television broadcasts of the Somali community symbolize "traces" or efforts to rebuild Somalia. Through detailed analysis of media practices in the context of migration, this study seeks to contribute to the advancement of knowledge on the use of ICT by Somali refugees

La prémisse de départ veut qu’au-delà des forces et contraintes extérieures, le parcours de chaque individu soit essentiellement unique et singulier. Cette étude cherche ainsi à saisir les logiques et processus sous-jacents à cette forme de mobilité aussi relative et évolutive que la réalité de notre ère globalisée l’impose, et ce, par l’appréhension du vécu des personnes impliquées. Grâce à la conduite d’entretiens semi-directifs auprès d’étudiants d’origine étrangère de l’Institut maritime du Québec à Rimouski, ce mémoire pose un regard sur leur parcours migratoire et l’expérience transculturelle vécue en région en traversant divers thèmes tels que les motivations à migrer et à choisir tel ou tel lieu de formation et de vie, les chocs culturels, la création de liens, le sentiment d’intégration, l’expérience académique, les stratégies d’adaptation et de résilience, les effets de la migration sur les individus, l’enjeu de l’appartenance, la vision de la localité d’accueil et les revirements de projets. Cette étude de cas permettra ainsi de soulever des pistes de réflexion concernant la réalité des étudiants en situation de mobilité et de questionner l’adéquation entre les logiques politiques et celles des individus.
With recent Canadian and Quebec policies aiming to capitalize on immigration, the present research targets migrant students enrolled in a regional college located in the Province of Québec. The basic premise of this paper is that beyond external forces and constraints, each individual has a unique and singular migratory experience. Through the analysis of these personal experiences, the following research aims to better understand the underlying processes of this relative and evolutionary migration movement brought about by globalization. Young foreign-born adults registered in a technical program at the Institut maritime du Québec in Rimouski were interviewed regarding their mobility and cross-cultural experiences through different themes such as : migration motivations, factors relating to choice of destination, culture shocks, relationships, academic experience, coping strategies, effects of migration, sense of integration and belonging, perception of the host community and projects evolution. The results of this case study highlight important avenues of reflection on the experience of migrant students in regional areas and question the concordance between governmental strategies and individual logic and projects.

Full textCette thèse s’intéresse aux pratiques d’intervention en maison d’hébergement auprès des femmes immigrantes victimes de violence conjugale (FIVVC). L’objectif général de la thèseest d’explorer, à partir de la perspective intersectionnelle (PI), les manières dont lesintervenantes des maisons d’hébergement du Québec, tout en considérant les expériences vécues par les femmes immigrantes en situation de violence conjugale, analysent cette situation et interviennent auprès de ces femmes. Pour la collecte de données, cinq groupes focalisés et une vignette clinique ont été utilisés pour explorer les points de vue de 33 intervenantes de maisons d’hébergement de quatre régions du Québec (Montréal, Gatineau, Québec et Sherbrooke). Une analyse de contenu thématique a permis de dégager deux discours chez les intervenantes sur les expériences des FIVVC : un discours d’homogénéité et un discours d’hétérogénéité. Le premier discours, moins présent que le deuxième, tend à homogénéiser les expériences des FIVVC. Cette tendance s’explique par une vision essentialiste du vécu des femmes, construite à partir de l’axe du genre. L’intervention féministe en violence conjugale —entrée sur la victimisation des femmes et la domination masculine —, largement utilisée dans les maisons d’hébergement, expliquerait cette vision homogénéisante des femmes de la part des intervenantes rencontrées. Des aspects positifs et contraignants de ce type de discours sont aussi soulignés dans cette recherche. Le second discours met en avant une représentation diversifiée et hétérogène des FIVVC. Cette hétérogénéité se base sur la présence d’oppressions structurelles (lois et politiques sociales, racisme, discrimination, non reconnaissance des diplômes) dans les expériences des femmes dans leurs pays d’origine et dans le pays d’accueil. Notre recherche a pu dégager du discours des intervenantes une perception des FIVVC, comme plus vulnérables à la violence conjugale; cette vulnérabilité découlerait d’une multiplicité d’expériences d’oppression ainsi que d’une représentation contraignante de la famille, des croyances religieuses et des communautés d’appartenance des femmes immigrantes. Des enjeux de ce type de discours sont abordés dans cette thèse. Bien que le deuxième discours témoigne de la complexité de l’analyse des intervenantes sur les réalités des FIVVC en général, il se présente de façon désarticulée. Concernant les points de vue des intervenantes sur leurs pratiques, l’analyse des résultats a permis de dégager trois thèmes principaux autour desquels s’articulent les discours des intervenantes : 1) les caractéristiques de l’intervention en contexte interculturel, 2) les facteurs modulant les pratiques en contexte interculturel et 3) les défis de l’autonomisation des femmes. Nous avons relevé de la part des intervenantes une reconnaissance des besoins différents chez les FIVVC en lien avec leurs appartenances culturelles et leurs positions sociales multiples. Des stratégies — surtout de collectivisation — permettent, selon les intervenantes, d’intégrer les aspects culturels et religieux liés à ces appartenances, afin de favoriser l’inclusion, le respect, la justice et la solidarité entre femmes. Divers facteurs modulent les pratiques en contextes interculturels, notamment la langue parlée, la position sociale, le statut et l’expérience d’immigration. Les intervenantes se montrent préoccupées par l’autonomisation des FIVVC. Bien que le « maternage » ressorte comme une pratique courante quand il s’agit d’intervenir auprès des FIVVC, les intervenantes sont critiques à l’égard de cette façon de faire. La défense des droits est aussi une pratique couramment utilisée dans le but de favoriser l’autonomisation des FIVVC. Concernant l’application de la perspective intersectionnelle dans l’intervention auprès des FIVVC en maison d’hébergement, nous concluons que son utilisation favorise les pratiques d’inclusion, car elle considère plusieurs systèmes d’oppression qui se croisent dans la vie des FIVVC. Cette perspective offre des opportunités de développement des pratiques quiintègrent les aspects micro et macro — notamment les aspects identitaires des femmes et les aspects structurels —, ainsi que le développement de pratiques réflexives. L’utilisation de la grille d’analyse de Patricia Hill Collins a permis d’apporter un éclairage sur la manière d’appliquer la perspective intersectionnelle dans l’analyse des expériences et des pratiques des intervenantes auprès des FIVVC en maison d’hébergement. Nous abordons aussi certaines limites de l’application de cette perspective, notamment en ce qui concerne la place que le genre devrait occuper dans l’analyse et dans l’intervention en violence conjugale. Des pistes d’intervention et de recherches futures découlant de nos résultats sont finalement proposées.

Data collection was carried out using five focus groups and one clinical vignette to explore the different viewpoints of 33 shelterworkers in women’s shelters in four regions in the Province of Quebec (Montreal, Gatineau, Quebec City and Sherbrooke) regarding their experiences with IWVDV and their choices of intervention practices used with these women. A thematic content analysis enabled us to identify two discourses in the shelter workers regarding their experiences with IWVDV: one discourse centered on homogeneity and the other, on heterogeneity. Less present than the second, the first discourse tended to homogenize shelter workers’ views of the IWVDV’s experiences. This tendency can be explained by an essentialism gender-based view of women’s experiences. Feminist intervention in domestic violence—which is centered on the victimization of women and the domination of men and which is widely used in women’s shelters—is one explanation for the homogeneous vision among the shelter workers we met with. Our research also highlights both the positive and limiting aspects of this type of discourse. The second discourse puts more emphasis on the diversity and heterogeneity of the IWVDV. This heterogeneity can be seen as a consequence of structural oppression (laws, social policies, racism, discrimination, non-recognition of credentials), both in the countries of origin and in the host country. Our research helped us to identify in the shelter workers’ discourse a perception that the IWVDVwere more vulnerable to domestic violence. This vulnerability, according to the shelter workers, would seem to be the result of multiple forms of oppression stemming from the families, religious beliefs and cultural communities. The present thesis thus addresses issues arising from this type of discourse. Although the second discourse illustrates the complexity of the analysis carried out by the shelter workers regarding the IWVDV’s situation, this discourse remains somewhat disorganized. In terms of the shelter workers’ viewpoints about their interventions, our analysis enabled us to identify three main themes on which their discourse primarily focused: 1) the characteristics of an intervention in an intercultural context, 2) the factors affecting practices in an intercultural context, and 3) the challenges in addressing women’s empowerment. We discovered that the shelter workers recognized the different needs of the IWVDV regarding their different cultural belongings and their multiple social roles. According to the shelter workers, different strategies, particularly collective approaches, made it possible to integrate the cultural and religious dimensions of these belongings, and thereby encourage inclusion, respect, justice, and solidarity among women. A variety of factors influenced the practices adopted in intercultural contexts, in particular the language spoken, the social position, the immigrants’ status, and their immigration experience. The shelter workers were particularly concerned by the issue of empowerment in IWVDV. While the issue of “mothering” was recognized as a widespread practice when shelter workers intervened with women in this group, these same workers tended to be critical of this approach. The defense of immigrant women’s rights was also an approach widely used by the shelter workers to further the BIW’s empowerment. Regarding the adoption of an IP in interventions with IWVDV in shelters, we are able to conclude that this approach encourages inclusive practices because it takes into account a range of systems of oppression which interact in IWVDV’s lives. This perspective opens up opportunities for developing practices that draw on both micro and macro aspects—in particular, women’s identity and structural aspects—as well as reflexive practices. Use of Patricia Hill Collins’s evaluation grid shed new light on how the IP can be used in analyzing the shelter workers’ experiences and practices when working with IWVDV in women’sshelters. The present thesis also takes into consideration some of the limitations of this perspective, particularly as regards the role that gender should play in domestic violence analysis and intervention. Further intervention avenues and research topics are also proposed.

This tendency can be explained by an essentialism gender-based view of women’s experiences. Feminist intervention in domestic violence—which is centered on the victimization of women and the domination of men and which is widely used in women’s shelters—is one explanation for the homogeneous vision among the shelter workers we met with. Our research also highlights both the positive and limiting aspects of this type of discourse. The second discourse puts more emphasis on the diversity and heterogeneity of the IWVDV. This heterogeneity can be seen as a consequence of structural oppression (laws, social policies, racism, discrimination, non-recognition of credentials), both in the countries of origin and in the host country. Our research helped us to identify in the shelter workers’ discourse a perception that the IWVDVwere more vulnerable to domestic violence. This vulnerability, according to the shelter workers, would seem to be the result of multiple forms of oppression stemming from the families, religious beliefs and cultural communities. The present thesis thus addresses issues arising from this type of discourse. Although the second discourse illustrates the complexity of the analysis carried out by the shelter workers regarding the IWVDV’s situation, this discourse remains somewhat disorganized. In terms of the shelter workers’ viewpoints about their interventions, our analysis enabled us to identify three main themes on which their discourse primarily focused: 1) the characteristics of an intervention in an intercultural context, 2) the factors affecting practices in an intercultural context, and 3) the challenges in addressing women’s empowerment. We discovered that the shelter workers recognized the different needs of the IWVDV regarding their different cultural belongings and their multiple social roles. According to the shelter workers, different strategies, particularly collective approaches, made it possible to integrate the cultural and religious dimensions of these belongings, and thereby encourage inclusion, respect, justice, and solidarity among women. A variety of factors influenced the practices adopted in intercultural contexts, in particular the language spoken, the social position, the immigrants’ status, and their immigration experience. The shelter workers were particularly concerned by the issue of empowerment in IWVDV. While the issue of “mothering” was recognized as a widespread practice when shelter workers intervened with women in this group, these same workers tended to be critical of this approach. The defense of immigrant women’s rights was also an approach widely used by the shelter workers to further the BIW’s empowerment. Regarding the adoption of an IP in interventions with IWVDV in shelters, we are able to conclude that this approach encourages inclusive practices because it takes into account a range of systems of oppression which interact in IWVDV’s lives. This perspective opens up opportunities for developing practices that draw on both micro and macro aspects—in particular, women’s identity and structural aspects—as well as reflexive practices. Use of Patricia Hill Collins’s evaluation grid shed new light on how the IP can be used in analyzing the shelter workers’ experiences and practices when working with IWVDV in women’sshelters. The present thesis also takes into consideration some of the limitations of this perspective, particularly as regards the role that gender should play in domestic violence analysis and intervention. Further intervention avenues and research topics are also proposed.

Full textThis thesis constitutes an analysis of intervention practices used with immigrant women victims of domestic violence (IWVDV) in shelters. The purpose of the research was to adopt an intersectional approach to explore how shelter workers in the Province of Quebec assessand choose to intervene in situations affecting IWVDV. Data collection was carried out using five focus groups and one clinical vignette to explore the different viewpoints of 33 shelterworkers in women’s shelters in four regions in the Province of Quebec (Montreal, Gatineau, Quebec City and Sherbrooke) regarding their experiences with IWVDV and their choices of intervention practices used with these women. A thematic content analysis enabled us to identify two discourses in the shelter workers regarding their experiences with IWVDV: one discourse centered on homogeneity and the other, on heterogeneity. Full textThis thesis analyzes the migration policy recruitment of skilled immigrants, led by the Canadian province of Quebec and the Brazilian community in this French-speaking province. For this, the concept of diaspora has been used as an analytical model of the formation of the immigrant community in a non-traditional installation area. Initially this work presents the history of this province and the development of thematic and linguistic migration and the role of migration policies that led to the autonomy of the province in the recruitment and selection of its economic immigrants using the points system. Then, the main characteristics of Brazilian communities in major country of installation are presented in order to place the issue of Brazilian emigration as a contemporary phenomenon. It is shown how, since the 1980s, this movement, previously residual, has become so prevalent in Brazilian culture. Then, the concept of diaspora is introduced to show the Brazilian emigration as a diaspora. Subsequently, this work presents, analyzes and discusses the migration of Brazilians under this prism through semi-structured interviews, with institutional and formal means, as well as non-institutional and informal to be here and there that are widely used. It highlights the role of virtual social networks in the process, in their migration history and the formation of community. It is shown that these Brazilians, when leaving their country, were looking for a certain quality of life and social guarantees that in Brazil they believed to be excluded
Esta tese analisa a política migratória de recrutamento de imigrantes qualificados conduzida pela província canadense do Québec e a comunidade brasileira nessa província francófona. Para isso, o conceito de diáspora foi empregado como um modelo de análise da formação dessa comunidade imigrante em uma área de instalação não-tradicional. Primeiramente, este trabalho apresenta a história desta província e do desenvolvimento da temática migratória e linguística e o papel das políticas de migração que levaram à autonomia da província no recrutamento e na seleção de seus imigrantes da categoria econômica através do sistema de pontos. Em seguida, as principais características das comunidades brasileiras nos principais países de instalação foram abordadas a fim de apresentar a questão da emigração brasileira como um fenômeno contemporâneo. É mostrado como, desde os anos 1980, este movimento, até então residual, se difundiu na cultura brasileira. Em seguida, é introduzido o conceito de diáspora afim de situarmos a emigração brasileira como uma diáspora. Posteriormente, este trabalho apresenta, analisa e discute a migração de brasileiros sob esse prisma por meio de entrevistas semi-estruturadas, cujos meios institucionais e formais, bem como não institucionais e informais para estar aqui e estar lá são amplamente utilizados. Ademais, destaca-se o papel das redes sociais virtuais no processo de imigração, na trajetória migratória e na formação dessa comunidade imigrante. É mostrado que esses brasileiros, quando deixaram o seu país, estavam à procura de certa qualidade de vida e de garantias sociais que eles acreditavam ser sido excluídos no Brasil

Full textMaronite immigration to Montreal started at the end of the 19th century. During the 1970s and 1990s, massive waves of Lebanese immigrants arrived to Montreal due to the wars in Lebanon. The Maronite Church is fully Roman Catholic but has a syriac-antiochean rite. Maronite immigrants did not have their own parish in Montreal and had to go for célébrations in the Oriental Catholic Church which was created by Montreal clerical authorities and served by Greek-Catholics (Melkites) of the Saint-Sauveur order. In 1969, Father Élias Najjar from the Maronite mariamite order, together with Maronites from Egypt, founded the first Maronite parish in Montreal. This thesis aims to study the process behind the constitution of the first parish, its evolution and the life of its parishioners by using a narrative and descriptive approach in the frame of the social and religious history. Results show a national Church and a new model of Maronite diasporic parish, different from the classical one, having subnational, international and inter-confessional diversities.

Full textChaque année, de nombreux professionnels français choisissent d'immigrer au Québec. Parmi eux figurent des assistants de service social désirant poursuivre leur carrière comme travailleurs sociaux au Québec. Or, plusieurs enjeux de reconnaissance se posent lors de leur parcours les menant à la pratique québécoise. La réanalyse d’entretiens menés dans le cadre d’un projet de recherche dirigé par Pullen Sansfaçon, Brown et Graham (CRSH 2011-2012; CRSH 2012-2015) nous permet d’explorer les expériences de reconnaissance et de déni de reconnaissance vécues par sept travailleuses et travailleur sociaux d’origine française lors de leur adaptation professionnelle au Québec. Le cadre théorique de la reconnaissance emprunté à Axel Honneth révèle qu’il et elles ont vécu des expériences de reconnaissance et de déni de reconnaissance sur les plans affectif, juridique et social. Pour être reconnus, il semble primordial que ces professionnels français détiennent le droit de pratiquer, que leurs compétences soient reconnues et qu’ils reçoivent du soutien et de l’approbation dans leur milieu de travail. Plus précisément, ce mémoire souligne l’importance d’obtenir le droit de pratiquer le plus tôt possible, de recevoir des formations adaptées aux besoins spécifiques des travailleurs sociaux immigrants avant et pendant l’insertion dans leur nouvelle pratique québécoise et d’être dans un milieu de travail accueillant et soutenant. Le rôle des institutions gravitant autour des travailleurs sociaux d’origine française, tels que les instances gouvernementales, l’OTSTCFQ et les milieux de pratique, est primordial pour mettre en place des conditions favorisant leur reconnaissance. Globalement, les personnes interrogées rapportent vivre davantage de reconnaissance professionnelle au Québec qu’en France.
