Full textThe purpose of this thesis is to study subjectivity markers in an online chat corpus : interjections and emoticons. First, we will study the semiotic and pragmatic specificities of this type of online conversation ; then we will propose a semiotic and pragmatic approach of interjections and emoticons. We will show that, even if there are a few differences between those two types of signs ? interjections are definitely part of verbal language, whereas emoticons are iconic imitations of gestures and mimics ? they share numerous traits. The study of those signs will lead us to wonder about their semiotic status, from icon to index, but also about their pragmatic functions : how they allow to perform, to show instead of describing, how they allow the users to express their subjectivity regarding a propositional content, etc. We hope that this study will contribute to enlarge the knowledge we have of emoticons, but also the views researchers have on language and gestures / mimics, which, according to us, should be brought closer, and not further apart
Zhang, Liping. "Utilisation des réseaux sociaux numériques par des étudiants chinois nouvellement arrivés en France : une étude comparative entre Facebook et Renren." Thesis, Lyon, 2016. http://www.theses.fr/2016LYSE2082.
Full textThis research aims at comparing digital identity and nature of the peculiarities of interactive written language on two digital social networks (Facebook and Renren). We are interested in the difference between the digital identity of these two digital social networks, one is worldwide used (except a few countries such as China) and the other is mainly used by the Chinese. Is that the digital identity of one person is also the same on these two different social network sites? How the users interact and express vis-à-vis different friends in different digital context? Can the online interactions manifest emotional aspects? In order to respond to these problems, this research questions the digital identity and their function in the identity construction, the relational and social aspects of online interaction, the types of emotions expressed in the online interactions, and the role of emoticon in the expression of emotions of these two digital social networks. The data analysis enables to identify the linguistic, social and emotional phenomena in online interactions of the corpus of study. Interviews and questionnaires clarify the analysis of the experience and the feeling of the different actors. So throughout the description of case use of Facebook and Renren by four newly arrived Chinese students in France, this work attempts to better understand the features of digital identity and interactive exchange of these two digital social networks

Full textVerbal language has traditionally been communicated by two means: speech and writing. In the twentieth century, however, a third means came into existence: transmitted language. Initially this consisted mostly of language “spoken at a distance” (telephone, radio, cinema, television), but it then extended to include language “written at a distance” (Internet sites, electronic mail, online chat, SMS). Technological progress was followed by a transformation of the language, and the code has been adapted to the different media used to convey it. Electronic technologies of the word, as Spina notes (2001: 31), have given a new impetus to the oral mode of communication, based on the spoken word.At the end of the 19th century, the invention of the telephone was a real breakthrough, allowing the creation of new, and previously unavailable, forms of communication. Today, little more than a century later, the phone has exceeded even its traditional limitations and to the transmission of sound has been added the ability to write short text messages, and even to send e-mail. The spread of SMS communication has transformed an instrument devoted to oral exchange into a technology of writing: in fact, the originality of the support allows text messaging, despite its written nature, to reproduce the morphological structures of oral interaction. Thus, the speed of composing the message is not the only property that allows texting to approach orality: the syntax is often seen as rather basic, with a predominance of parataxis and elliptical constructions rather than hypotaxis, features that are typical of spoken discourse. But texting also plays on communicative purpose by adopting a more informal register and thus fostering a new language. The present thesis, while not the first study to analyze a corpus of SMS, is surely one of the first to compare the types of processes found in both languages, French and Italian, in order to define parallel mechanisms and differences
Cherbonnier, Anthony. "La reconnaissance des émotions à partir d’émoticônes graphiques : des recherches expérimentales à l’étude des usages sur une webradio." Thesis, Rennes 2, 2021. http://www.theses.fr/2021REN20005.
Full textEmoticons are often used in digital environments to convey emotions. Although a wide variety of emoticons exist, little is known about how they convey emotions compared to other modes of expression, and few studies have looked at their use in a school setting. In this thesis, four studies (N = 291) were carried out to design “new” emoticons to unambiguously represent the six basic emotions, three studies (N = 957) sought to compare the quality of recognition of emotions from these “new” emoticons in relation to other modes of expression, and particularly facial expressions. A final study examined the way in which these emoticons are used on a webradio by middle school students (N = 204). The results showed that the “new” emoticons convey emotions more effectively and more intensely than facial expressions and emoticons from Facebook and iOS. This improved recognition is mainly due to the negative emotions of disgust and sadness. By including these "new" emoticons on the Wikiradio© Saooti made it possible to study their uses in an academic setting. The results showed that, regardless of the gender of the middle school students, the use of the emoticon conveying happiness was the preferred way to express emotions toward programmes produced by peers. These results suggest there is a need to design specific emoticons to convey emotions unambiguously in digital environments and to study their effects on behaviour
Qiao, Qi. "The adoption and use of SMS among Chinese teenagers." Thèse, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/1866/3554.
Full textThis thesis examined the adoption of mobile phones and use of SMS among Chinese teenagers based on the uses and gratification theory and computer-mediated communication research. Specific areas of Chinese teenagers’ SMS use, such as parental control, the circulation of chain messages, the popularity of greeting messages and the wide use of emoticons were studied. The social functions of SMS, especially in Chinese teenagers’ social-emotional practice, were explored as well. This study is based on a field survey conducted among one hundred Chinese teenagers. It reveals that, for Chinese teenagers, the two main reasons for the adoption of mobile phones are parental influence and the need for social communication; the use of SMS corresponds to seven uses and gratifications: flexibility, low cost, privacy, embarrassment avoidance, entertainment, fad and escape. SMS is also used by Chinese teenagers to build and maintain their social relationships.
