Abstract:
Thesis (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, School of Architecture and Planning, Program in Media Arts and Sciences, 1999.
Includes bibliographical references (leaves 77-80).
Although metaphor is generally recognized as an integral component of everyday language, very few computational systems capable of understanding metaphoric utterances exist today. This thesis describes one approach to the problem and presents PoEM, a prototype system which recognizes and interprets metaphoric descriptions of emotions and mental states in single-sentence input. Building upon previous work in knowledge-based metaphor comprehension, this research adopts a goal-driven approach which assumes each metaphor is selected by a speaker for its aptness at serving a particular communicative goal. To identify these goals, an empirical analysis of metaphor distribution in song lyrics was performed, and typical communicative intentions and surface patterns were identified for the top five most frequently occurring metaphor groups. These intentions and surface patterns have been implemented as a set of metaphor templates and interpretation rules in PoEM, using the WordNet lexical database for supplemental semantic information. Evaluation of PoEM demonstrates fairly high accuracy but low recall.
Laurie Satsue Hiyakumoto.
S.M.

Abstract:
Clinicians are encouraged to use metaphors in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). This study aimed to investigate the types of metaphors that occurred within an ACT therapy group and how they were used within on-going dialogue. Naturally occurring data was gathered from an ACT therapy group. Therapy sessions were audio-recorded across the course of the therapy group and discourse analysis was applied to the transcriptions. Various systematic metaphors were identified in relation to the therapeutic discourse of managing emotions. These included protective containers, handling objects, moving passed impediments, and emotions as fellow travellers. Between the group members and the facilitators various power dynamics were identified that influenced how the metaphors were negotiated and appropriated. These findings highlight differences between traditional metaphors of therapy and ACT-specific metaphors, differences between metaphor use by clinicians and clients, and some of the challenges associated with more directive approaches to therapy. Practitioner points • A number of different metaphors can be used to conceptualise how emotions can be managed. • Awareness of the metaphors that occur implicitly within therapy can inform how ACT-specific extended metaphors are used. • Appropriation of metaphors introduced by clinicians can be a potential therapy outcome, and clinicians may need to consider how they are negotiated.

Adams, Aurora Mathews. "LINGUISTIC AND CONCEPTUAL METAPHORS OF ‘HEART’ IN LEARNER CORPORA." UKnowledge, 2017. http://uknowledge.uky.edu/ltt_etds/20.

Full text
Abstract:
This corpus-based study examined English and Spanish learner language for ‘heart’ metaphors. Gutiérrez Pérez (2008) compared ‘heart’ metaphors across five languages and that study served as a reference framework for the work presented here. This work intended to find evidence of metaphor transfer and/or new metaphor learning in second language writing. Conceptual metaphors (Lakoff and Johnson, 1980) and linguistic or lexical metaphors (Falck, 2012) from both languages were considered in the analysis. This work analyzed ‘heart’ metaphors taken from two learner corpora, the Cambridge Learner Corpus and the Corpus de Aprendices de Español. Results were compared to the findings of Gutiérrez Pérez (2008) to see whether these metaphors typically occur only in English, only in Spanish, or are found in both languages. The results showed evidence of language learners using several kinds of metaphors that do not typically occur in their first language. The aim of this study was to add a new facet to this body of research by examining these phenomena in learner corpora rather than monolingual corpora. Furthermore, this study also examined both second language English and second language Spanish corpora, addressing potential bi-directionality of transfer or conversely, the use of new linguistic forms.

WU, Shixiong George. "A corpus-based synchronic comparison and diachronic interpretation of lexicalized emotion metaphors in English and Chinese." Digital Commons @ Lingnan University, 2007. https://commons.ln.edu.hk/eng_etd/3.

Full text
Abstract:
This study is a corpus-based contrastive study of the cross-language diachronic changes and synchronic variations of lexicalized emotion metaphors (LEMS) in English and Chinese within the framework of cognitive linguistics. Since it is based on a series of basic assumptions of the Lakoffian Conceptual Metaphor Theory (CMT), it is also expected to prove or improve them by making this cross-cultural comparative study of LEMS in English and Chinese. Therefore this study aims at not only the diachronic changes and synchronic variations of LEMS but also the cultural factors underlying them. By applying CMT in the analysis of the corresponding data of LEMS in English and Chinese, and the method of comparative etymology to explore the cultural influences on the variations over the metaphor themes of LEMS in the two languages, this study has achieved the following findings: (1) Both embodied and non-embodied metaphors are possibly universal in different languages; (2) The cross-language variations of emotion metaphors are often characterized by the cultural variations of the prototypical source concept at the basic category level in different cultures; (3) The commonality and specificity of a metaphor theme in different languages are closely related to the levels of generality of the metaphor theme; (4) Although to a great extent our thinking and ideology are determined by our bodies and the metaphors that they give rise to, or vice versa, the em-minded cultural notions are the important ingredient producing the cross-language variations over the themes of emotion metaphors. It can thus be inferred that metaphor themes are cultural and ideological constructs to some extent;(5) Both the embodied physiological experiences and the em-minded cultural notions play an important role in the conceptualization of emotions; (6) The embodied conceptualization of emotion is sometimes subject to the em-minded cultural notions; (7) There exist three different types of metonyms underlying the conceptualization of emotions in English and Chinese; Based on these important findings, it proposes a three types of metonymy model which functions better in generalizing the different metonymies underlying the conceptualization of emotions in English and Chinese. In addition, this study opens the way for applying the semiotics and cognitive metaphor theory to the studies of metaphors in the etymological structures of LEMS in English and Chinese which might be of great importance for the future development of CMT.

Abstract:
The study of emotion is an interdisciplinary field. One key aspect of this field is the cultural variation of emotion. This thesis is a contribution to the above area by means of a specific analysis of the ancient Greek conception of the emotion ἔρως. The focus for this study is the Greek Novel, a collection of literary works emerging from the Greek speaking culture of the eastern Mediterranean during the Roman imperial period (1st to 4th cent C.E.). These novels are based upon the universal topics of love and sexual passion, while at the same time reflecting and reworking both the specific social and literary climate of the period and ancient Greek folk and philosophical models of psychology. My thesis argues that the role of conceptual metaphor in the understanding of ἔρως as an emotion has not yet been fully appreciated, and that an understanding of metaphor is essential for gauging which parts of the folk model of the emotion are culturally specific or universal, and how these sections interact.

Abstract:
This thesis is written within the theoretical framework of cognitive linguistics and focuses on the ways emotion keywords lexicalize and conceptualize in the language of legal fiction. The first part of the work provides an interdisciplinary discussion about the interconnection between language, cognition, and emotion. This is followed, in a second part, by the complex lexicographical study of five emotion keywords in legal fiction, a genre of texts which has remained overlooked by researchers in the field. The third part brings to light the metaphorical patterns of different types of emotion keywords in order to show how they lexicalize and conceptualize in language, and demonstrate the dependency between the types of emotion keywords and their strongest and weakest conceptualizations. In addition, this thesis offers an application of the software ATLAS.ti, which allows a qualitative approach to the study of emotions as expressed in language

Abstract:
Advertising often employs metaphor because of its rhetorical utility. By drawing on analogous imagery and language, metaphor has the potential to elicit emotional responses. As the digital age is increasingly saturated with commercial messaging, advertising experts leverage the persuasive power of metaphor and emotion to produce creative, compelling, and memorable commercials. German automobile company Audi employs metaphorical language and imagery in their video advertisements to arouse consumer emotions. In this study, I conduct rhetorical analyses of Audi’s online video commercials in order to: identify instances in their ads that employ metaphorical language and imagery; investigate how those metaphors function rhetorically; and discuss the complex rhetorical interplay between metaphor and emotion. My findings suggest that Audi leverages the power of metaphor to build audiences’ emotional investment in the brand, and therefore, be more likely to purchase Audi vehicles.

Abstract:
Coloring Regret is a musical composition written for 21 musicians, one sound technician, and electronics. This essay is an analysis and description of the compositional tools and methods developed during the compositional process. The piece attempts to explore a relationship between emotional expression in the human voice and emotional expression in music. The inspiration for this work came from current research in emotional prosody which suggests that there are identifiable components to human speech that allow listeners to accurately interpret a speaker's emotional state. Audio files in which actors portray outbursts of emotional energy were analyzed and categorized, then later transcribed for acoustic instruments. An omni-present lament motive suggested a specific path through a previously developed harmonic “gravity” system. The final composition implies a journey from the “Vocal Sound Object World”- with a dramatic vocal, textural, and naturalistic electronic component – to the “Traditional Pitch and Rhythm-based World” dominated by clear rhythms, timbres, and pitches.

Abstract:

Abstract:
As anthropologists, philosophers and linguists have nowadays largely recognized, metaphors are not simply rhetorical embellishments, but a basic mechanism of human thought. Focusing on botanical metaphors occurring in Greek poetry composed between the 8th and the 5th centuries BCE, this dissertation aims to show how knowledge relative to the world of plants was used to understand, conceptualize and represent different aspects of human life. Botanical metaphors are pervasive in archaic and classical poetry. My work locates them against a wider background, comprising other kinds of texts (mainly, philosophy and medicine), myths, and, to a lesser degree, religious representations and practices. Therefore, botanical metaphors appear to be integral to a widespread network of cognitive schemata, sanctioned and transmitted by linguistic practice, and used by Greek speakers to construct their understanding of (some aspect of) human life. As this thesis demonstrates, plants offered convenient models to reason about the functioning of the body and its internal humors as well as the ways in which physical appearance may reveal moral or divine qualities. Botanical knowledge was also used to understand human passions, inborn qualities, kinship ties and civic identities. The overall aim of my dissertation is to offer an “emic” depiction of those domains: that is, a description grounded in Greek speakers’ own conceptual schemata

Poitevin, Ninon. "La musicalité de la peinture : de la métaphore au concept, penser une forme silencieuse de musicalité." Thesis, Lille, 2018. http://www.theses.fr/2018LIL3H023.

Full text
Abstract:
The expression “musicality of the painting” and all its derivative uses have multiplied in the speeches since the end of the 19th century. The liveliness of this conflicting metaphor is gradually weakened because of the verbal and operative self-supplying phenomena to which it is the subject. The validation of the use of such a metaphor assumes its own revivification and its relief by the concept. It can indeed be considered, as opposed to the musicity, as a necessity (and not an extended presence) to music. It is thus understood as a silent moving principle and as a base for the meaning and the musical expressivity. Therefore, as binder and structuring Form, it is able to be embodied in other materials and in particular the pictorial material. The musicality is recognizable in this quiet material, in terms of production, thanks to the aesthetic of the Complete-incomplete that it sets up, and in terms of the reception, thanks to the specific aesthetic experience it triggers, reaching to an always readjusted, and infinite emotional comprehension of the “musical” pictorial work

Abstract:
Games can be used to convey meaning and communicate messages. While there is ample research on games' expressive capacities, how players' backgrounds impact game interpretation has thus far been under-explored. This study explores this gap by way of testing an expressive game and discerns if there is a relationship between how people experience a game and their personal background and current state of mind. To engage this question, we conducted a player study. We developed the abstract, metaphorical game “Lorn” intended for this purpose. The game together with an online survey, intended to assess players' background and state of mind, was distributed to potential participants. After having played the game, the participants shared their interpretation of the message in the game and their experiences and feelings they experienced while playing. 15 people participated in the player study. The result indicates there are differences in how people interpret a message depending on their personal background and their current state of mind.
15 personer deltog i studien.

This research aims at investigating the metaphorical conceptualization of emotional categories and is based on cognitive linguistics. The work discusses how primary and complex conceptual metaphors (LAKOFF; JOHNSON, 1980; GRADY, 1997) and metaphorical idealized cognitive models (LAKOFF, 1987) structure emotion concepts. It also presents the ideas of emotion prototype and aspects of emotion concepts (KÖVECSES, 2000; 2002b), as well as debates the universality and cultural variation among metaphors from emotional domain (KÖVECSES, 2005). Considering these notions, a corpus study from Twitter was carried out, concerning metaphorical occurrences for SADNESS and HAPPINESS in Portuguese language from Brazil, in order to search for evidences about the conceptualization of these emotions in such language. The investigation indicated metaphorical cognitive models that can underlie the conceptualization of the analyzed categories, several metaphorical expressions that result from these models and primary and complex conceptual metaphors that structure them. In addition, the applied study showed the relation of the cognitive models identified in corpus with the emotion prototype, similarities and differences between the analyzed categories, possibilities to elaborate different aspects of emotion concepts and also the correspondence or not of the models found for Portuguese with those pointed out for English.

Mogaji, Emmanuel. "Emotional appeals in UK banks' print advertisement." Thesis, University of Bedfordshire, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10547/622103.

Abstract:
The unprecedented turbulence and uncertainty experienced in global economic and financial markets because of the 'credit crunch' has had a damaging impact on consumer confidence. Trust and credibility have been eroded as many customers feel let down by the banks suggesting the need for banks to rebuild constructive dialogue and long-term, meaningful relationships with their customers again. Though financial service, in this case, is considered a utilitarian service, based on the fact that money is needed to support people‘s daily activities, the present state of financial service has suggested the need for banks to appeal to consumers‘ emotions with the aim of improving their reputation. Also, the competition within the industry also could suggest the need to adopt an emotionally appealing advertisement strategy as emotions are known to play an influential role in building robust brand preference. This study builds on the communication theory, meaning transfer theory and consumer involvement theory, to understand the messages the banks are sending out and to elicit consumers‘ emotional reaction. One thousand, two hundred and seventy-four UK bank advertisements in nine national newspapers were content-analysed to identify the emotional appeals presented by the banks. The perception of these appeals and their associated meanings were sought through semi-structured interviews with 33 participants in London and Luton. The results of the analysis indicated that UK Banks are utilising emotional appeal in their advertisements to reach out to the consumers to convince them to upgrade their account, to open an additional account or switch their account. The most predominantly used appeals were relief and relaxation followed by excitement and happiness or satisfaction with the bank, and finally, security and adventure. However, variations were found in different financial products that employed emotional appeals. It was found that high-involvement products such as mortgages and loans used fewer emotional appeals. Both bank groups - high street banks, including the big four (Barclays, HSBC, Lloyds and RBS) and non-high street banks, such as the new entrants, supermarket brands, and online banks were using emotional appeals. However, it is acknowledged that the communication strategies between these banks could be different as the non-high street banks are more likely to repeat and publish the same messages across many newspapers, instead of publishing different emotionally appealing advertisements. Though consumers acknowledged these emotional appeals in the advertisements, they were more concerned about their relationship with the banks as they don‘t rely on advertisements to make a financial decision. Rather, recommendations from families, friends and associates and also branch location are more important when deciding on which bank to choose. The lack of congruency between financial services and emotional appeals in advertisements is also observed as customers are more likely to be persuaded by rational appeals however this study has not completely ruled out emotional appeals in bank advertisements as the use of both types of appeals is recommended. The study provides important theoretical and managerial contributions to understanding how the consumers understand meaning-embedded advertisements produced by the banks. Managers will be able to consider the implications of advertisements in enhancing their brand equity and building relationships with customers in anticipation that, by word of the mouth and established relationship, their bank‘s reputation will be enhanced. Limitations of the study and opportunities for future research are identified.

Abstract:
The novel O cheiro de Deus represents the culmination of Roberto Drummonds aesthetic project. The author creates an epic that simulates, in a modern perspective, the classic genre of narrative, but preserving the popular and contemporary origins of the Brazilian writer. The approach of this novel is divided into two axis: one is dedicated to the classic and mythological sources; the other regards the interventions of the popular tradition with which the erudite paradigm reconfigures. The first chapter leads with the images present in the novel, establishing ground on the various trends of the myth studies, as well on the mediation of the epic paradigm, systematically described by Emil Staiger. The axis dedicated to the canon ends with a philosophical and aesthetic reflection about literary forms and genres, based on the considerations of Friedrich Nietzsche and Mikhail Bakhtin. The second chapter proceeds with the investigation of the popular vein, introduced in the fictional system by three different strategies: the reference to other forms of art, the laughter and the olfactory metaphor present in the title. Seen separately, 1- the aesthetic references from other forms of art allow to comprehend the link between the naivety of Roberto Drummonds representations and naïf painting; the overwhelming tendency to sentimentalism to emotional gesture, and melodrama; the concept of emotional formulae or Pathosformeln (Aby Warburg) and the power of popular imaginary in the novel. 2- The categories of laughter, with emphasis on the freudian theory of the joke, reveal the strategies of the discourse engaged in sabotaging its interdictions. 3- Smell of God as metaphor synthesizes all the lines of thought developed earlier, whereas it configures itself as the cosmological factor of the story. In this manner, the classic and epic inspiration, under the influence of the laughter and popular art expressions, generates more then an exotic, irreverent and naïf literary piece, like the ones that usually identifies the peculiar style of the author: it turns this novel into a project of fictional creation that has no naivety at all, commanded by the olfactory metaphor. This dissertation, therefore, investigates how these two antithetical and complementary axis activate traditional and present formulas of representation, supporting the evanescent, divine and literary high spheres, as well the habitus of contemporary casualness and superficiality in Drummonds novel. The simple and powerful methaphor of the smell of God translates such convergence

Abstract:
This thesis presents a linguistic analysis of a selection of poems by John Keats: specifically, the expression and verbalization of emotion by way of language the twenty-six poems that compose the poetic corpus upon which this research is founded. The linguistic approach taken is a cognitive approach, based on the theories of cognitive linguistics, cognitive grammar, and cognitive poetics. Conceptual Metaphor and Metonymy Theory also play an important role in the poetic and grammatical analyses. The approach concerning emotion is an embodied one, based in language, philosophy, and with support from neurobiological research. The goal of this thesis is to examine the ways in which emotion is expressed within Keatsian poetry by a close interrogation of the language itself, thus holding the view that the lexical and grammatical elements—and their semantics—that compose the verses and poems themselves are essential to the salience of the poetic rendering of emotional experience

Abstract:
97
This research redefines the value of utensils through the discussion of emotional meanings and the construction of modeling elements. This result contributes to the fact that products are no longer simply only the tools utilized by designers. Instead of putting so much emphasis on the emergence of external characteristics, designers begin to include the revelation of user’s real emotions into their products. In the process, the intentions of behavior of users are explained and the reasons for the occurrence of behavior are provided for the masses; both are supported by the “the Mirror Stage” of Lacan of the psychoanalysis. Finally, the users can achieve the goal of “self-identification” by projecting their emotions on products. The arrangement of the experiment first clarifies the meanings of love with the reference to literature review. Then 46 groups of vocabulary samples are established. With the responses from the public and the results of the experiment of descriptive statistics and element-analysis explanation, “affection” is consider the closest word to the people’s ideas for love. In addition to quantitative studies, the semi-structured interview is carried on simultaneously. According to expert’s opinion and the results of the experiment, the idea of how to transfer the “love” into elements of design is explained. Finally, 3 groups of vocabulary which can be used to showcase the meanings of love are chosen from the experimental result. The 3 groups include 3 units of vocabulary - “worrying”, “caring” and “intimacy” – of which ideas are utilized in the theme concept of designing chairs. Based on this research, 4 steps-“Setting up the Prototype→Free Association→Association Strengthening→Transforming” - can be summarized and then be used as evidence for confirmation. This research transfers the emotion of love into the product design, and hopefully, another method of expressing loves can be provided to the populace to arouse the situation of intimate interaction between people. Finally, the goal of Humanity-organic Living Environment can be achieved.

Chang, Pi-chen, and 張碧珍. "Judgment and Use of Chinese Emotion Metaphors." Thesis, 2009. http://ndltd.ncl.edu.tw/handle/5zs7hd.

Abstract:
97
According to previous studies (Chen, 2000; Keil, 1986; Seitz, 1997; Vosniadou, 1989), metaphorical ability improves with the increase of age. In the case of children, as they get older, they obtain more knowledge about the world and words and prefer more abstract and nonliteral explications to more concrete and literal explications. Whether college students also show such a tendency remains to be seen. This study aimed to investigate how Taiwanese undergraduate students judged and used Chinese emotion metaphors. A questionnaire of the judgment and use of Chinese emotion metaphor was designed and administered to 37 undergraduate students from a comprehensive university in Taiwan. This tool enabled us to know if the subjects could understand and use metaphors in a competent manner. The foci of our investigation included which metaphors were more successfully understood and what their characteristics were. The questionnaire contained twenty emotion metaphorical phrases which were also four-character idioms. The first part was a metaphor judgment task which contained five alternative emotion categories: anger, happiness, sorrow, pride and one additional category of “none of the above four.” The second part was a sentence production task which required the subjects to produce a sentence by using the target metaphorical phrase appropriately in the sentence. Descriptive statistics were adopted to calculate the average and percentage of correct judgment. Inferential statistics were used to further analyze the correlation between the subjects’ performance on the metaphor judgment task and the sentence production task. Chi-square analyses were utilized to find out the correlation between the two tasks for each individual item and all the twenty items as a whole. Furthermore, we classified error types of the subjects’ responses to the sentence production task. The results show an average of 85% of correct response to the metaphor judgment task and an average of 64% to the sentence production task. The outcome of Chi-square analyses demonstrated a positive correlation between the subjects’ performance on the two tasks. As for error types of the responses to the sentence production task, we noticed that the commonest error were sentences that involved an information gap. The research results enabled us to make insightful observations into the ways Chinese speakers judge and use emotion metaphors.

Abstract:
100
This thesis investigates a linguistic phenomenon, synaesthetic metaphors, among body, emotion, and languages in Mandarin Chinese and English. The data are extracted from a widely translated piece of fantasy literature, Harry Potter. The synaesthetic metaphor is regarded as “one of the most common types of metaphoric transfer in all languages” (Williams, 1976: 463). Through the mappings from one sensory modality to another, expressions are understood via observable bodily symptoms, figurative bodily images (Wierzbicka, 1999b), and other cognitive mechanisms. The analysis for the current thesis draws on the synaesthetic schemas proposed by Williams (1976), Lien (1994), and Day (1996). The idea of semantic map is proposed by Hasegawa (2006) and the emotion categorization is classified by Parrott (2001). The thesis aims at discovering (1) how synaesthesia transfers are used in Mandarin Chinese and English in Harry Potter; (2) in what way language diversity exists in synaesthetic transfer; (3) in what way language universality exists in synaesthetic transfer. This thesis has found: (1) both Mandarin Chinese and English have their favored source domain in synaesthetic transfers. The preference ranking of source domains in Mandarin Chinese is dimension, emotion, and touch; while it is emotion, touch, and dimension in English. (2) Emotionally related synaesthesia weighs heavily in both Mandarin Chinese and English. In English, emotion is the primary source domain and is the second largest target in Mandarin Chinese. (3) The usages of tactile lexicons in visual-type synaesthesia occur more in English than in Mandarin Chinese. (4) Dimension and touch are not as isolated as Williams (1976) stated. Instead, there are connection moves from dimension to touch, which is pointed out by Lien (1994) as well when he conducted his research of synaesthetic transfers in the Southern Min dialect. (5) The transfer rule can be modified due to different linguistic purposes and different stimuli. In sum, the body and emotion create an interesting linguistic phenomenon, synaesthetic metaphor. Through the present thesis, it would conduct a balanced view that takes into account both the universality and diversity of synaesthetic metaphors as they occur in two versions of Harry Potter: the Mandarin Chinese version and the original English text.

Bochantin, Jaime Elizabeth. "Sensemaking in a High-Risk Lifestyle: The Relationship Between Work and Family for Public Safety Families." Thesis, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/1969.1/ETD-TAMU-2010-08-8347.

Abstract:
Past research concerning work and family has largely been from traditional, white-collar settings and has only taken into consideration the perceptions of the employees' experiences with regard to the relationship between work and family. However, there is no doubt that employees' in non-traditional settings, particularly those employed in public safety professions (i.e. police and fire) experience the relationship between work and family differently than those in white-collar settings, especially since they put their lives on the line daily for the protection and betterment of the community, society and even the world. In addition, the experiences and perceptions of work and family will undoubtedly be different for the family members (i.e. children and spouses) of those employed in such "life-threatening" professions. This study sought to understand how public safety employees, as well as their families, make sense out of the relationship between work and family by first examining what metaphors they employ to articulate the relationship between work and family. In addition, this study sought to examine if male versus female public safety employees experience the relationship between work and family in similar or different ways, as well as if police officers and fire fighters experience the relationship similarly or differently. Using qualitative methods, the findings indicate that public safety employees and their families articulate and make sense of the relationship between work and family in both similar and different ways. Contrary to previous work-family research, dominant metaphors and constructs such as balance, conflict, segmentation, etc. did not appear at all within this study. Instead, participants likened the relationship between work and family to competition, nature, organism, change, integration, opposition, ambiguity, and destruction. Public safety employees and their families also experienced and made sense of the relationship between work and family through humor, emotion management, fear and risk assessment. Findings also indicate that both male and female public safety employees internalize risk in much the same way, as well as agree that parenthood in general, is devalued in the public safety profession. With regard to differences, findings indicate that females have a harder time negotiating a healthy relationship between work and family, have their competency levels always questioned by family or co-workers, and use different language and rhetoric from males when talking about work and family. Finally, results show that police officers and fire fighters make sense of work and family in much the same way with regard to "dirty work" and communication rules but differ in terms of coping mechanisms and job satisfaction. This study suggests a number of implications for both theory and practice. The findings also point to many necessary areas of future research which could further our understanding of the relationship between work and family, not only in professions characterized by high-risk, non-standard hours and stress, but also in standard white-collar professions as well.

Abstract:
The results of this study provide further evidence for the hypothesis that psychopaths display an insensitivity to the emotional valence of language and assist in generalizing this finding to relatively complex linguistic stimuli. Using a Q-Sort format, it was determined that psychopathic subjects not only made more mistakes then nonpsychopathic subjects when using the emotional valence of metaphors as a sorting criteria, but also that their mistakes were more likely to involve sorting errors that identified metaphors as being extreme members of the opposite valence category. This suggested that psychopaths were confident in their misidentification of emotional valence. The inclusion of a task that assessed metaphor interpretive ability ensured that these results were not due to an inability to comprehend metaphoric sentences. Further, age, years of formal education, and reading level were ruled out as potentially confounding variables. Recommendations were made for future research that examines other aspects of the psychopath's use of metaphor.

97
Emotion is regarded as an objective existence, yet its representation is not concrete. This thesis aims to understand the cognitive mechanism and try to figure out the specifications by classifying and analyzing metaphorical expression in Mandarin. With regard to the emotion event structures, there are several metaphors of emotion concepts, and they are EMOTION IS OBJECT, EMOTION IS PERCEPTUAL PROPERTY, EMOTION IS SPATIAL PROPERTY, and EMOTION IS ORGANISM. In addition, metonymy is taken as the crucial bases for metaphors, and relative metonymies are also taken as crucial bases for cognitive transfer to serve as metaphors, such as EMOTION IS PHYSIOLOGICAL EFFECT and EMOTION IS BEHAVIORAL REACTION. Except for conceptual metaphors utilized in the emotion event structures, this thesis explores the specific metaphors of each frame in perspectives on syntactic behaviors and semantic representations based on frame semantics. These metaphorical bases are separated into five groups based on those are classified in emotion event structures.Characteristics of each group are further analyzed and explained depending on provided examples, and it is found that these specific metaphors should be operate in coordination with frame elements and defining patterns to achieve the goal of expressing emotion concepts. In the exploration of metaphorical expression in Mandarin, cultural background and body parts are both pivotal for constructing metaphors and differentiating emotion metaphors in Mandarin. Moreover, body parts receive and response the emotional stimulus, thus the relationship between perception and emotion can not be ignored. After the connection, it needs a broader network to integrate communication, cognition, perception, emotion, and social interaction to understand abstract concepts and represent the cognitive and mental processing of human beings more effective.

Dissertação de mestrado integrado em Psicologia
The expression “I am feeling down” conveys affective information (sadness) through a spatial term (“down”). This emotion/space relation is conceptualized in previous studies as positive emotions being associated with superior/right locations and negative emotions with inferior/left locations. In this study we use a spatial target detection task, in which the participants are first presented to either a vocalization, face or word and then have to detect a spatial target, in the vertical or horizontal axis. Our results support the existence of an association between emotion and space that is dependent of axis, stimulus type and emotion and that facilitates the discrimination of superior targets when presented after negative stimuli.

Abstract:
Thorough selection of linguistic data made it possible to identify emotions related to each one of the attacks, while the cognitive tools chosen revealed those same emotions conceptual content. The results confirmed the predominance of negative emotions and the strong conceptual content of fear and anger

Under the coexistence of social changes and multiple values, people and It is inevitable that people will increase their disagreement and conflicts, and they must continue to learn and grow. However, while busy competition and pursuit of growth, how to relieve emotions is an issue for modern people. This research is based on the theoretical discussion of emotions between East and West scholars. Many external factors cause differences in emotions. Under the diversified development, people's feelings are deepened and multiplied. Emotional research scholars explore from various angles; this creation It will be distinguished according to the basic ethnic group of emotions proposed by Daniel Goleman, a famous American writer and psychologist who is most talked about in modern times. In order to make the creation objective, after the basic classification of emotions, a questionnaire survey method is carried out to understand the degree of conformity of the subject to the relationship between emotion and image, and the result is presented by metaphor. This creation will be created in two series: "Flowing hormones" and "Sensibility Project". Emotion is regarded as the subjective mental state of the individual. Abstract:
The world is more and more connected and yet we are often physically distant from people we care about. Technology increasingly supports remote interpersonal communication but has yet to integrate our sense of touch into this interaction. Researchers in the field of haptics (touch and technology) have started exploring computer-mediated touch interaction. The question is how should a computer-mediated person-to-person touch interaction be designed. In this thesis, we concentrate on how the design of a haptic interaction model influences performance and subjective experience of a dyad. Specifically, we examine the effect of using different metaphors to develop and explain the haptic interaction model, creating interaction models with and without a haptic display of personal space, and the type of relationship shared by the dyad using the device on ability to communicate emotion haptically. We also explore how dyads use these interactions to communicate emotion. We ran a structured study, in which participants communicated emotion with a haptic device and found that participants were able to communicate some emotional content through the haptic interactions. A significant effect of the interaction metaphor on performance was found. Participants preferred interactions with a haptic indicator of personal space, and participants' reported metaphor preferences depended on their relationship. Finally, we found that common actions were used to express each emotion, even though this is a new media unfamiliar to participants.
Science, Faculty of
Computer Science, Department of
Graduate

Abstract:
This diploma thesis explores the lyrical poetry of Eduard Mörike (1804-1875), a German poet. The topic of the thesis is theencountering of nature and love in his works. This poet, less known in the Czech context, wrote various kinds of poems, which deserve attention. The thesis is divided in two parts, theoretical and interpretative. In the first part, the thesis focuses on giving an overall context (I deal with a historical context, literary epochs, during which Eduard Mörike wrote, his personality and general introduction in lyrical poetry). The second part of my thesis aims to interpret selected poems, which are divided bytheir themes: romantic love, the morning, wayfaring, the forest and the so-called "Dinggedichte," or poems focusing on understanding and appreciation of a single item. In each poem, a mood or feeling that characterizes the poem is described, who is the speaker within the poem, and which topics of love and nature can be observed. From the perspective of form, I analyze the rhyme scheme. The analysis of each thematic group also contains a comparation of the poems. The interpretational part aims to connect and evaluate the interweaving of love and nature in the poetic works of Eduard Mörike and touch upon the deeper meaning of the poems. Its aim is also to make the selected works...

Abstract:
This is a study of the broad scope of cognition verbs in Afrikaans. Firstly, the nonmetaphorical cognition verbs [e.g. ken (= know), weet (= know), dink (= think), verstaan (= understand)] are discussed and then the metaphorical cognition verbs which are subcategorized in metaphorical verbs of vision [kyk (= look), sien (= see)] and metaphorical manipulation verbs [vorm (= form), gryp (= grab), voel (= feel), vat (= take) etc.]. The study is embedded in the cognitive linguistic stance of embodiment which inter alia implies that our neurological functioning is based on feeling (which includes our sense of touch), and that the way our bodies are structured also determines the way we express our thoughts. This extensive descriptive study of Afrikaans cognition verbs, metaphorical and nonmetaphorical, indicates that visual lexemes in Afrikaans express subtle abstract thought, while manipulation lexemes express less subtle, yet still abstract result-driven thought. Synthesis is an important factor in this study because the non-metaphorical cognition verbs as well as the metaphorical cognition verbs are linked to the basic cognitive principle of embodiment. Also, the two metaphorical verb types can by seen in synthesis when the stage frame ( = vision) and the workshop frame ( = manipulation) are merged. The synthesis of the stage frame and the workshop frame eventually provides us with another perspective, namely that vision and manipulation (which includes touch and feeling) are in a state of interacting nurturing symbiosis.
Linguistics
D. Abstract:
Text in Afrikaans
he goal of this research study is to determine whether clay has any diagnostic value to the Educational Psychologist. The phenomenon of claywork with children has been examined by literature to determine whether this subject has been researched before. The developmental phases in claywork and the development of clayfigures are discussed, as well as the clay techniques which are applied by children. A comparison between clay as a three-dimensional medium and drawings as two-dimensional medium is made. The ways of application of clay are discussed by means of case studies. The general value of clay for the Educational Psychologist is also mentioned. On the grounds of certain short-comings in the literature study, "The Clay-feelingstory technique" is initiated and applied. For the empirical study eighty learners in the foundation phase, aged between five and nine years, were involved. Random sampling was used. This research study uses the combined method design in order to better understand the phenomenon of clay projections. Although the study is mainly qualitative in nature, some data is quantified. The research results prove that clay projections have diagnostic value, concerning the child's verbal and non-verbal messages, the way he applies clay techniques, by decoding his symbolic messages, emotions come to the fore, actions are portrayed and described, relations are revealed, themes come to the fore and needs are expressed. It also seems that clay projections can be taken in group context as an identification medium to help the child in need. It also seems that clay projections can be applied as a supplementary projection medium and that hypothesis can be verified with other exploratory media. Guidelines are given for the application and interpretation of clay as projection medium.
Educational Studies
D.Ed. (Sielkundige Opvoedkunde)

Abstract:
This dissertation attempts to show that the phenomenon of loneliness is written into Michael Ondaatje’s The English Patient. The Introduction offers a description of the origins of loneliness as a field of study, presents key instances of loneliness in literature, and investigates the nature of loneliness. In the first chapter, the Villa is introduced as a figural and conceptual framework for analysis. The second chapter focuses on the patient’s room and the library, leading to a discussion of personal and existential loneliness, identity and naming. The third chapter investigates social loneliness with reference to the kitchen, garden and hallway, addressing notions of race and othering, home and family. The fourth chapter discusses the body and embodiment, as well as emotion and metaphor. The dissertation argues that the stylistic, thematic and structural features of The English Patient suggest and reflect the complexities and characteristics of loneliness.
English
M. A. Ozodi, Christopher Chinedu. "He descended into hell and on the third day he rose again : as a metaphor for pastoral care for a dysfunctional Igbo family, with emotional depression as their crisis." Thesis, 2001. http://hdl.handle.net/10413/3066.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation is concerned with the restoration of relevance of the Church ministry into the family system, in a given cultural area. The Igbo people of Nigeria are the principal foci for the research. They have experienced difficult times which this research considers to be the source for their emotional depression. One of the greatest problems which a family can face is being in crisis. Under this condition, it is completely disorganized. Such a family cannot think constructively nor plan together as a family for ways ahead, unless they are assisted. The joy and happiness of family life is lost. This study considers emotional depression to be a crisis faced by a dysfunctional family. Despite the presence of many Churches in Igboland, more families are still facing crisis. This points to the idea that the Church is not yet responding well to the caring needs of her members. The researcher believes that if the Anglican Church in Igboland can adopt the concept of the death and resurrection of Jesus after three days, which she teaches, in her caring ministry her services to the families will be more relevant. To succeed in this, the socio-cultural background of the people must be put into consideration. The main discussion on the crisis faced by the Igbo families is in chapters four and five. Chapter two gives the social, political, religious and economic background responsible for the crisis of the Igbos within Nigeria. Chapter three deals with the family system, highlighting both the functional and dysfunctional family system. Chapter six looks into the meaning ofthe Church and pastoral care by the Church, while chapter seven considers ways and means of restoring hope to a depressed family. The researcher believes that a sincere giving of pastoral care and counselling within the Anglican Church in Igboland will bring about the healing, sustaining, reconciling and restoring of the already depressed families. This will mean resurrection of family life. There will be true reconciliation among individuals within a family and between the family and God.
Thesis (M.A.)-University of Natal, Pietermaritzburg, 2001.

Abstract:
This is a qualitative study born out of personal experiences throughout my life, including my 25 years of ministry. The theme of the study is relevant for pastors’ identity and ministry in a postmodern world. Many people, including pastors, suffer from emotional wounds. These wounds play a significant role in shaping pastors’ lives. Carl Jung’s conviction that analysts can help their patients in an effective way when they themselves are wounded healers and Henri Nouwen’s understanding of the wounded healer metaphor for pastoral care, are employed to discuss the theme of the study. Nouwen’s own spirituality plays a vital role in his unpacking of the metaphor. A fairly recent development in psychological circles, namely emotional intelligence, is employed as instrument to aid pastors in becoming aware of their emotional wounds. This study argues that pastors who are emotionally intelligent wounded healers will be better able to guide and sustain others towards healing. Chapter 1 presents the reason for undertaking the study. It is argued that pastors experience cognitive dissonance as a consequence of the shift from a modern to a postmodern paradigm. Theological traditions and concepts concerning Biblical authority, play a vital role in the experience of cognitive dissonance. The interpretation of Jesus as “the human face of God” is presented as a model for pastors’ relationships to others. A survey of relevant literature in pastoral theology and pastoral care is followed by a description of the value of autobiographical biblical criticism for pastoral care. Because Carl Jung used the wounded healer metaphor to describe analysts’ disposition in therapeutic situations, chapter 2 explores the value of Jung’s psychology for the theme of the study. The wounded healer metaphor Jung used goes back to an ancient Greek myth. Therefore mythology, theories of myth and the value of myths for pastoral care are discussed. Chapter 3 investigates Henri Nouwen’s interpretation of the wounded healer metaphor as related in a Talmudic tractate. The relevance of several of his works to the theme of the study, especially The wounded healer, is discussed. Chapter 4 is concerned with the way in which concepts about God influence the way pastors think about the Bible, people and authority. The study argues that a “soft” authority is congruent with the way in which Jesus interpreted God as his Father. Various other metaphors for God are related to the theme of the study as well. The concept of emotional intelligence and its relevance to the theme of the study is expounded in chapter 5. Different theories of the concept are discussed and the choice for the theory of John Mayer, Peter Salovey and David Caruso is motivated. The chapter shows the value of intelligent processing of emotions for pastors’ personal lives and their ministry. Chapter 6 presents the findings of the study and concludes with a short autobiographical description of my own position.
Thesis (PhD (Practical Theology))--University of Pretoria, 2008.
Practical Theology
unrestricted

Abstract:
This thesis is focused on the conceptualisation of emotions in Czech Sign Language with the emphasis on the linguistic conceptualisation of anger. At the beginning the author reveals basic theoretical issues of the cognitive linguistics of spoken and sign linguistics. Afterwards she presents some general facts about metaphor and metonymy in spoken and sign languages - with the main focus on the metaphorical-metonymic conceptualisation of anger - and shows metaphors and metonymies of anger in the English, Polish and Czech language. The core of the thesis consists of the linguistic research of anger in Czech Sign Language. The author identifies basic metaphors and metonymies of the concept of ANGER in Czech Sign Language within the empirically gained linguistic material. The gained data from all four languages are compared and presented in a table at the end of this paper. Key words: cognitive linguistics, emotions, conceptualisation of emotions, the concept of ANGER, Czech Sign Language, metaphor, metonymy, metaphorical mapping, iconic mapping, iconic-metaphorical mapping.

Abstract:
In this paper, we analyse literary metaphors according to the explanatory tools proposed by the Theory of Conceptual Metaphor, within the realm of Cognitive Linguistics. For that purpose, we choose as literary corpus thirty-two excerpts from poems by the Portuguese poet Fernando Pessoa (1888-1935), written between 1910 and 1935, in which the time conceptual metonymy “hour” is the starting point for conceptual metaphors of time in which the source domain is the mind of the poetic self, conceptualized in terms of metaphorical container of emotions that are, in turn, conceptualized as objects, spaces and human beings, according to the poet’s life experience.
