Abstract:
This research effort aims to create a new car-following model that accounts for the effects of emotion on driver behavior. This research effort is divided into eight research milestones: (1) the development of a segmentation and clustering algorithm to perform new investigations into driver behavior; (2) the finding that driver behavior is different between drivers, between car-following periods, and within a car-following period; (3) the finding that there are patterns in the distribution of driving behaviors; (4) the finding that driving states can result in different driving actions and that the same driving action can be the result of multiple driving states; (5) the finding that the performance of car-following models can be improved by calibration to state-action clusters; (6) the development of a psychophysiological driving simulator study; (7) the finding that the distribution of driving behavior is affected by emotional states; and (8) the development of a car-following model that incorporates the influence of emotions.<br>Ph. Afif, Radhia. "Socioeconomic Impacts: Exploring Relationships between Parenting Styles and Emotional Intelligence in ODD." ScholarWorks, 2019. https://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/dissertations/6960.

Full text
Abstract:
Children diagnosed with Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) are at a higher risk to develop other serious problems based on reoccurring symptoms such as; aggression, hostility, and lack of empathy for others. Based on the emotional intelligence theory, it may be possible that understanding emotional intelligence in children with ODD could help reduce future psychological and social problems. This quantitative study addresses the problem of poor or low Emotional Intelligence (EI) in children diagnosed with ODD. A correlation between parenting style, as defined by Baumrind's parenting style theory, and the development of emotional intelligence has been found in current research. However, there is limited research which addresses the potential moderating effect of socioeconomic status (SES) on the relationship between parenting style and level of emotional intelligence in young children (4-8 years) diagnosed with ODD. Parents of children aged 4-8 years old, with a diagnosis of ODD, were sampled and asked to complete three surveys: Kuppuswamy's Socioeconomic Scale, Parenting Styles and Dimensions Questionnaire, and The Parenting Rating Sclae from Childrens Emotional Intellignce (4-8). There were 85 surevys completed. A multiple regression analysis with a moderator was used and the results did not show statistically significant impacts of SES on the relationship between parenting styles and level of emotional intelligence in young children diagnosed with ODD. Social change impacts may include: access to behavioral/mental health resources for families in low income neighborhoods and parent education/training.

Yeung, Kwong. "Perception of teacher emotional support and parental education level : the impacts on students’ math performance." Thesis, University of Leicester, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/2381/8607.

Full text
Abstract:
There is a paucity of research juxtaposing parental education level and teacher emotional support in a single study which examines their relative impacts on students’ academic achievements. Therefore, the first objective of this dissertation is to study the influence of parental education level, in comparison to the influence of teacher emotional support, on students’ math performance, by using more representative data and a rigorous statistical method. The second objective is to identify and examine how some important psychological traits (both affective and cognitive) mediate the effects of social factors on students’ math performance. The third objective is to examine whether those relationships are moderated by gender. Hong Kong’s survey data is extracted from the Program of International Students Assessment (2003) as organized by Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), on the math performances of 4,478 students at the age of fifteen. Measurement invariance was first tested, and then followed by Confirmatory Factor Analysis. Two structural models were tested by Structural Equation Modeling using Linear Structural Relations (LISREL) 8.5 which is computer software for SEM. Results indicated that first, parental education level affects children’s math scores by providing home education resources and enhancing children’s math self-efficacy, and second the Self Determination Theory is applicable in supporting the hypothesis that teachers affects their students’ math scores by providing a cooperative learning environment, which in turn, enhances students’ affective and cognitive factors. Three important mediators, namely cooperative learning environment, math self-efficacy, and home education resources are concluded as significant mediating factors upon the effects of parents and teachers on students’ math performance. The perceived support from parents and teachers are not significantly different across gender in Hong Kong. This is consistent with recent studies that differences favoring males in mathematics achievement are disappearing. Theoretical contributions and practical implications are discussed in the final part of the dissertation.

Thesis: S.M., Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Department of Mechanical Engineering, 2018.<br>Cataloged from PDF version of thesis.<br>Includes bibliographical references.<br>Emotions play a critical role in perception and decision making. The use of emotional design in multimedia learning tools has been previously studied and it has been shown that positive emotions facilitate learning by reducing task difficulty and increasing motivation. This study aims to apply emotional design to task-management environments and study its effect on task productivity. A digital task management tool with five environments - one control, and four emotional - was created and tested by 41 users. For the emotional environments, Calm, Motivational, Sad, and Stressful were chosen from each quadrant of the two-axis valence and activation characterization of emotions. In each environment, users completed 3 tasks, which asked the users to watch a short educational video and answer a quiz based on the video. Affectiva, a facial emotion detection tool, was used in conjunction with PANAVA-KS, a method of measuring self-reported emotions, to determine users' emotional states while completing the tasks. Quiz completion times were analyzed in relation to these emotional states to determine whether or not emotional environments improved task completion. It was found that completion times did not improve significantly on average in comparison to a standard task management environment. However, a significant increase in completion time was seen in the Calm environment, suggesting a possible correlation between low positive activation and low task productivity.<br>by Teresa Y. Owusu-Kwarteng, Louise. "'Between two lives' : parenting and impacts on academic, professional achievements and socio-emotional outcomes for British-Ghanaians." Thesis, University of Greenwich, 2010. http://gala.gre.ac.uk/7138/.

Full text
Abstract:
Research undertaken within the Sociology of Education frequently highlights concerns about the underachievement of Black students in education and, later, within the labour market. Yet, there are a number of shortcomings associated with research in this area. Firstly, there is a tendency to homogenise the achievement levels of all Black students. Thus observations made about the outcomes of African-Caribbean students are often applied to all other Black groups. When distinctions between African and African Caribbean groups have been made, the achievement levels of students from different African backgrounds are often merged, creating a misleading impression of their different academic outcomes. Secondly, studies seeking to provide explanations for the low attainment levels of Black students are often critical of life within Black families, in particular their assumed use of an „authoritarian‟ parenting style, which is seen as creating psychological problems in children and as hindering their achievement. Effectively, such notions serve to pathologise Black families in Britain. This thesis presents a critique of existing studies concerning Black families in Britain and the academic achievement of Black (African) children, and also seeks to address existing gaps in the knowledge about Black Africans residing in Britain. Life history interviews were conducted with 25 British-Ghanaians who have achieved highly in their academic and professional pursuits. The findings suggest that not all parents adopted an „authoritarian‟ approach when raising their children, and that those who did were influenced by their own socialisation experiences in Ghana. While some respondents experienced some socio-emotional problems resulting from their „authoritarian‟ socialisation, these were generally resolved and did not have a long-term impact on their attainment. The thesis also suggests that the use of discipline, associated with this parenting style, may have had some beneficial effects in relation to respondents‟ academic and professional outcomes.

"A Human Touch in A Digitalized Business World : A Qualitative Study of How the Digital Transformation in Business Impacts the Emotional Interactions Between Leaders and Followers."

Full text
Abstract:
Due to today’s digital transformation, traditional ways of communication are increasingly replaced by virtual and digital communication channels. The challenge for leaders in this digital environment is consequently to reach out to their followers to the same extent as in physical meetings. Leadership is about influencing people to strive towards a desired direction and leaders’ aims are thereby to impact their followers both cognitively but also emotionally in order to stimulate motivation. Emotional intelligence revolves around the necessity of understanding and reading others’ emotions and how to act upon that in order to successfully interact with others. By reason of the current Covid-19 pandemic, we have the rare opportunity to explore the interaction between leaders and followers during the time of a global pandemic and understand how the accompanying social distance may impact the emotional aspects in leadership. The research question for this thesis is thereby: How can emotional value be created in the interaction between leaders and followers in today's digitalized world? The theoretical framework that constitutes the basis of the thesis is divided into four main concepts which are: the relational perspective of leadership, emotional intelligence, creating emotional value and the digital transformation in the business world. The study has an exploratory purpose and is of a qualitative approach. In order to collect empirical data, semi-structured interviews were held with eight participants whereof four leaders and four followers. The findings could be divided into four themes which are: Human touch and individual need, Social skills and individual adaptation, Work satisfaction and motivation and Future strategies. The result of the study shows that emotional value is highly important in the interaction between leaders and followers in order to maintain engagement, satisfaction and motivation in a digital work environment. The conclusion is however that emotional value indeed can be created through digital communication but that it has to be created in a quite different way than in physical meetings.

Crocker, Rebecca, and Rebecca Crocker. ""Sadness is a Great Pain for the Body": The Emotional Trauma and Embodied Impacts of Migration from Mexico to Tucson, Arizona." Diss., The University of Arizona, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/621356.

Full text
Abstract:
A considerable body of evidence links social and economic inequities to poor health. One of the means through which these inequities are translated to the body is via negative emotions, which carry known psychological and physiological responses. This thesis is a historically contextualized study of how migration from Mexico to southern Arizona is experienced at the site of the body. In this dissertation, I outline the ethno-historical background of traditional medicinal usage and concepts of health and healing in northern Mexico, the primary sending region to southern Arizona. This historical grounding enables a richer exploration of how Mexicans understand migration to effect their physical and mental health. I then examine migration-related psychosocial stressors impacting first-generation Mexican immigrants in southern Arizona, and report on the primary emotional experiences immigrants associate with these stressors. Finally, I use the illness narratives of my participants to move more deeply into the connections between these experiences of emotional suffering and physical health. Here I employ immigrants' own words to draw a link between group level epidemiological data on health declines in the immigrant community and established research in biological anthropology and neurobiology that identifies individual emotional hardship as a biological pathway to disease. Given the heavy emotional toll of migration and the direct impact that regional legislation and border security has had on well-being, this thesis argues that emotion be considered an important mechanism for health declines in the immigrant community.

Ou, Chun Tsen, and Luong Le Phuoc. "Iconic Brand: its componential factors and impacts on brand community : A cross-cultural study in Sweden, Taiwan and Vietnam." Thesis, Umeå universitet, Handelshögskolan vid Umeå universitet, 2012. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:umu:diva-56647.

Full text
Abstract:
Iconic brand is a new topic in the field of branding that has started to attract researchers’ attentions; yet, it is still mostly discussed in the non-academic field. Brand community is also an evolving topic in marketing. These two new concepts are the focuses of this research. The main subject of this research is to explore the componential factors of iconic brand and brand community and the influences of the former ones on the latter ones. Even though there are few books and articles related to iconic brand, so far no quantitative research has been conducted. Thus, in this study, quantitative method is used to explore the componential factors of iconic brand. The same method is applied to brand community as well to explore the impacts of iconic brand on brand community. This research also accounts for a fact that cultural differences of the three countries (Sweden, Taiwan, and Vietnam) may affect respondents’ perceptions on the factors of iconic brand and brand community, as well as the impact levels between them. This study starts with examining the relevant literatures of branding, iconic brand, brand community, and cultural aspects of branding. Then, the hypotheses and research model are proposed based on theories. Questionnaires are distributed to Swedish, Taiwanese, and Vietnamese respondents in accordance with convenience sampling and snowball sampling. A total collection of 486 accepted questionnaires (which includes 171 questionnaires from Sweden, 163 ones from Taiwan, and 152 ones from Vietnam) is coded and analyzed by using SPSS and AMOS. Factor Analysis (EFA and CFA) and Cronbach’s Alpha are used to test the measurement reliability and consistency. Together with them, other statistical techniques, such as ANOVA and SEM (Structural Equation Modeling) are employed to test the proposed hypotheses. Semi-structured interviews are then conducted, based on the results of quantitative analysis, with six dynamic consumers from the three countries to explore further the cultural differences for the topic in Sweden, Taiwan, and Vietnam. The results show that iconic brand has three componential factors: brand personality, brand myth, and brand storytelling, while brand community has two factors: brand loyalty and emotional attachment to brand community. Also, the findings reveal that brand personality has the most positive impacts on brand loyalty while brand storytelling has the lowest positive impact on brand loyalty. Other impacts of iconic brand’s factors on brand community’s factors are positively moderate. Furthermore, both quantitative and qualitative results confirm the hypotheses of cultural differences in respondents’ perceptions (in the three countries) on iconic brand’s factors, brand community’s factors, and the positive impact levels between them.

Abstract:
With technological advancements rendering customer expectations ever more sophisticated, firms must compete with increasingly complex service offerings to secure their position in the market. For firms in the hospitality industry, innovating their service offerings to cater to these changing customer demands has therefore become a prerequisite to survive. This paper takes a dynamic capability perspective to examine how family firms fare in this rapidly changing environment by examining the role of family influence on their capabilities to engage in service innovation.  The purpose of the study was to describe and explain how family influence impacts dynamic capabilities for service innovation in a family firm within the hospitality industry. The aim of the study was to derive insights on how family influence impacts family firms’ innovation capacity and to stimulate future work in the field of research.  This study is based on an in-depth single case study approach. Empirical data was gathered through semi-structured interviews. Based on a qualitative explorative study using an abductive approach, we were able to develop new combinations of established theoretical models and concepts with findings from our theory and empirical data.  Five attributes of family influence were identified that impact family firms’ capabilities for service innovation - both positively and negatively. The results indicate that family influence can positively impact dynamic sensing capabilitites for service innovation, while the impact of family influence on dynamic seizing and dynamic transforming capabilities for service innovation can be ambiguous. The findings call for continued exploration of the role of family influence on dynamic capabilities for service innovation and family firms’ innovation capacity in general.

Petersen, Matilde Breth. "Social and Emotional Wellbeing impacts of prolonged extreme heat driven by climate change: lived experiences of public housing residents in a regional community in Victoria, Australia." Thesis, The University of Sydney, 2021. https://hdl.handle.net/2123/26843.

Full text
Abstract:
The increasing pace of climate change is expected to give rise to more severe and more frequent adverse climate events. Significant amongst these is the increased frequency of prolonged periods of extreme heat, with concomitant impacts on human health. The existing literature on this topic focuses predominantly on the quantifiable physical health impacts of extreme heat; much less researched is its effect on social and emotional wellbeing. My research focuses on people residing in public housing in a community (pseudonym, ‘Sunset Country’) located in northwest Victoria, Australia, where severe heatwaves are a common occurrence. In Australia, there is no clear legislation around the provision of cooling in public housing. Hence, the health and wellbeing of public housing residents in Sunset Country are at serious risk during prolonged periods of extreme heat due to their having no means of keeping their homes cool or escaping the heat. The overall aim of my research was to explore the lived experiences of public housing residents living on Sunset Country, to understand how prolonged extreme heat exposure impacts their social and emotional wellbeing. Employing a qualitative methodological framework based on community engagement and participatory action research principles, I conducted eight focus groups and one in-depth interview with public housing residents living on Sunset Country and the service providers who support them. Using thematic analysis, I developed two major themes: first, that extreme heat impacts the emotional wellbeing of public housing residents (with subthemes around mood changes, inability to cope, anxiety, the exacerbation of mental health conditions and effects of insufficient sleep on school performance), and second, that extreme heat impacts the social wellbeing of public housing residents, with subthemes of social isolation, erosion of social cohesion, increased conflict and reduction in community safety). The participants’ lived experiences contribute to three overarching theories grounded in my data. Firstly, policies are not keeping up with the changing climate; despite significant increases in the severity of heatwaves, there have been no amendments to public housing policy addressing the need for cooling legislation. Secondly, there is an apparent misalignment of governmental rhetoric and action; public housing in Sunset Country may not be fit for habitation given the lack of protection against extreme heat, and thus perpetuates inequalities in the community. Finally, bureaucratic failings contribute to the cycle of disadvantage and disempowerment experienced by public housing residents, reducing individual agency. My research findings make a significant contribution to building knowledge around the previously underexplored relationship between extreme heat and social and emotional wellbeing. Based on the perspectives and concerns voiced by my participants, I provide several recommendations for action. These include the development of sustainable climate adaptation strategies and urgent policy action to improve public housing living standards, aligning with the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals. Research must endeavour to give voice to people already impacted by the effects of climate change to gain deeper and more holistic understandings of these issues and their social and emotional impacts. Lived experience knowledge can then be used to urgently develop appropriate climate adaptation strategies to effectively safeguard human health and prevent societal inequities from widening.

Mulholland, Paula Claire. "Childhood emotional maltreatment and its impact on emotion regulation." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/8141.

Full text
Abstract:
An aim of this research was to gain prevalence rates of emotional abuse (EA) and emotional neglect (EN) in a community based adolescent sample. This exploratory research also attempted to determine the impact of EA, EN and a combination of the two (emotional maltreatment; EM) on adolescent’s emotion regulation (ER). The impact of temperament, gender and age was also considered, along with the adolescent’s subsequent quality of life ratings. Method: A total of 540 adolescents (mean age 14 years) were recruited through their secondary schools, and completed the following questionnaires: the EN and EA subtests of the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ; Bernstein & Fink, 1994); the Early Adolescent Temperament Questionnaire – Short Form (EATQ – SF; Ellis & Rothbart, 1999); the Basic Emotions Scale (BES; Power, 2006); the Regulation of Emotions Questionnaire (REQ; Phillips & Power, 2007) and the Kid Screen -10 item Health Questionnaire for Children and Young People (Ravens-Sieberer et al., 2005). Results: Prevalence rates of EA and EN were reported. Differences were detected between EA and EN in terms of how they affect experiences of basic emotions and how they impact on ER, even after controlling for temperament. Only EA was associated with aggression, whereas both EA and EN were associated with depressive mood and reduced quality of life. Conclusions: EA and EN are different maltreatment experiences which have different detrimental effects on the individual, therefore requiring different interventions.

Treanor, Morag. "Exploring the impacts of assets and vulnerabilities of families experiencing multidimensional poverty and income inequality on children's early cognitive, social, emotional and behavioural developmental outcomes in Scotland." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/8871.

Full text
Abstract:
Living in poverty and persistent low income has detrimental impacts on many facets of the lives of parents and children. During the early years of the new millennium this was of primary concern to the Scottish and UK governments: in response, policies were implemented to improve children's developmental outcomes, and to increase both maternal employment and levels of income for low paid and unemployed families. Previous qualitative research on families living in poverty revealed that families have varying degrees of additional vulnerability depending on their levels of social assets, e.g. social support, and financial vulnerabilities, e.g. debt and financial stress. High levels of social assets appeared to attenuate, and low levels of social assets appeared to exacerbate, the negative impacts of living in poverty. These social and financial assets/vulnerabilities comprise two of the five domains of the Sustainable Livelihoods Approach (SLA) quantified for use in this thesis. This thesis explores what impacts, if any, social and financial assets/vulnerabilities have on children's cognitive (C) development, as measured by naming vocabulary and picture similarities, and on their social, emotional and behavioural (SEB) development as measured by the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire. To achieve this aim this research uses the first five sweeps of the annually-collected longitudinal Growing up in Scotland (GUS) birth cohort study. The analysis uses the technique of factor analysis to derive the latent constructs financial and social assets/vulnerabilities, and OLS multiple regression analysis with quasi-variance to test the associations. The research employs multiple dimensions of economic disadvantage - longitudinal income poverty, material deprivation, longitudinal income poverty and material deprivation combined, and longitudinal income inequality - to explore the effects, not only between the lengths of time people have lived in poverty, but also across the income inequality spectrum, i.e. persistent low income versus persistent high income. The results of the research show that high maternal social assets and financial vulnerabilities separately are associated with higher and lower levels of child SEB development respectively, especially for children living in persistent low income. The relationship did not hold for children’s cognitive development. It also reveals that children whose mothers are experiencing additional financial stress and debt have lower CSEB scores (but not picture similarities), especially in relation to SEB development. There is also a relationship between social and financial assets/vulnerabilities: having high social assets is statistically associated with lower financial stress and debt for those living with lower incomes. This thesis argues that mothers, families and children living in poverty would benefit from policy and practice interventions that support geographical proximity of family and friends, that foster close and supportive wider family relationships, and that promote access to credit that does not lead to unmanageable debt and detrimental levels of additional financial stress. The research notes that while the SLA has been a useful theoretical framework, effectively quantified, the GUS data are limited in how effectively it can construct the SLA as it is not dedicated to its measurement.

Caseiro, Priscila Regina Amorim. "A sobrecarga do cuidador informal em Ponte de Lima." Bachelor's thesis, [s.n.], 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/10284/6914.

Abstract:
In this modern times, it is attended an increase of the hope of life, and with that an increase of the number of seniors with dependence. Like this, the need of care giving on the part of third namely caretakers are frankly larger. With the elderness, the increase of the dependence it appears in the senior and with that all of the limitations that the aging carts. Like this the informal caretakers appear, that according to Neri e Carvalho (2002) mentioned by Oliveira (2009) cit in Sousa, share of the opinion that the informal caretaker is habitually a relative or somebody very close of the senior. Oliveira (2009) cit in Sousa (2011), points out that the needs of the family to take care of the dependent senior person can cause stress situations and physical and mental problems. Nevertheless this function can generate frustration feelings, anxiety, inquietude and a constant concern in the person that takes care, and this can take the informal caretaker's á overload. Face to the exposed the interest appeared on the part of the investigator of to deep the knowledge on this theme and to understand which the intervention of the nursing. Like this, the general objective delineated for the present Graduation Projert was: To evaluate the informal caretakers from Ponte Lima overload. The chosen population was informal caretakers of the county of Ponte Lima and inside of the same ones a sample of 30 elements was selected with at least 6 months to exercise informal caretaker's activity. As instrument of colleting data was the Questionnaire of Evaluation of the Overload of the Informal Caretaker of the Teacher's authorship Teresa Martins. In terms of study type, was a simple and traverse study quantitative, descriptive in agreement with the methodology of Fortin (2009). A Sobrecarga do Cuidador Informal em Ponte de Lima After analysis and discussion of the data the 30 elements that constitute the sample, most part are of the feminine gender, they possess ages understood between the 21 and the 77 years, tends like this an average of 45 year-old. In concern to the data obtained with the application of QASCI is ended that the factors with more influence in the characterization of the informal caretaker's overload were IVP, IF, SF and RE, having obtained a level of moderate overload with a total of 35,30%. This goes to same information into the exposed by Martins (2003) in that suggests as overload levels: the value 0 indicates overload absence, from 1 to 25 is considered quick overload, 25 to 50 correspond to a moderate overload, from 50 to 75 indicates serious overload and finally a larger value to 75 is indicative of extremely serious overload.<br>N/A

Abstract:
This thesis consists of three essays that together aim to explore the role of family in human development, focusing on its care function during the early childhood and its influence on the formation of cognitive and socio-emotional skills. The general hypothesis consists that family is the social space with most influence on child development and it even could determine the effects that other social spaces like the daycare may have on child outcomes. Family is a network of care and affection, but it can also be a place of deprivation for human well-being. The structural characteristics of family as well as internal dynamics define protective and risk factors on child development. In the first essay, a theoretical discussion is done from the approach of psychology and neuroscience, and it explains how experiences in families during sensitive periods in childhood determine child outcomes, defining, for example, brain development and personality. In that sense, positive parenting practices and authoritative parenting style are indicated as references of suitable environments that encourage child development. The essay examines the concept of resilience and through this is possible to identify factors to explain why some children exposed to adverse environments can achieve good performance and skills. Also, the essay discusses about cognitive and non-cognitive skills and the central role of emotions in human development. In the second essay is evaluated the child development in Chile. This analysis includes different dimensions of children, such as cognitive, social-emotional and motor skills and considering at the same time, the influence of family factors on the level of development achieved by the children. For this objective, it is applied the model "Multiple Indicator Multiple Causes - MIMIC" which is part of the Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). In this paper also is used the Capability Approach founded by Amartya Sen and Martha Nussbaum considering the real opportunities of children to achievement their development according the conditions imposed by their families, either by their structural or socioeconomic characteristics such as income or by family internal dynamics associated with the degree of sensitivity, parenting practices and practices of discipline. Finally, the third essay evaluates the effects of daycare on cognitive and socio-emotional development of Chilean children of 4-5 years conditioning to family characteristics, such as socioeconomic status, degree of maternal sensitivity and parental involvement practices. The results showed that more exposure to daycare has more benefits in cognitive skills of children of low socioeconomic status than in children from families of higher status. However, there are evidences of negative effects of daycare on children's outcomes when the degree of sensitivity and parental involvement is low. Thus, this paper contributes understanding the importance of parental involvement for that child care programs like daycare have greater success and these can cooperate in the child development.

Abstract:
As a type of cultural event, music festivals have seen great economic and social success in recent decades. In their pursuit to understand the experience that such events elicit in the people attending them, scholars have devised a number of models grounded in various disciplines to explore the event experience. However, little attention has been paid to the internal cultural development that festivalgoers undergo as a result of the emotions they experience in music festival settings. Through quantitative and qualitative analysis, this study shows that music festival experiences are an opportunity to develop specific features of festivalgoers' cultural identity and arouse intense emotions. It also draws connections between these intangible analyses and the intentions that festival organizers bring to the organization of such events.<br>Com a tipus d'esdeveniment cultural, els festivals de música han triomfat econòmicament i socialment al llarg de les últimes dècades. Kiss, Csaba Zsolt. "The emotional voter : the impact of electoral campaigns and emotions on electoral behaviour in Britain." Thesis, University of Oxford, 2013. http://ora.ox.ac.uk/objects/uuid:3afc98fa-d42a-4240-ad16-af1c2fa0f2c7.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the role of emotions in mediating the effects electoral campaigns have on political behavior in Britain. I contend that electoral campaigns, aside from direct effects, can also have indirect effects, manifested through the impact of the emotions they induce. I theorize that, through manipulating the tone, framing and targeting of their messages, electoral campaigns induce specific emotions. Emotions are argued to have a direct effect on turnout (intentions) and a moderating effect on the impact partisanship, policy preference and leader evaluations have on vote choice. Extending the Theory of Affective Intelligence, I hypothesize that individuals who are enthusiastic about their preferred party, or experience anxiety or anger in relation to an out-party, are more likely to turn out, and to cast their vote based on their partisanship. Contrarily, anxiety and anger experienced towards the preferred party are expected to decrease the importance of partisanship and increase the relevance of policy preferences and leader evaluations when voting. While anger experienced towards this party is also hypothesized to also decrease turnout, anxiety is not thought to affect it. To test these propositions, I rely on a multi-methodological approach that uses both panel and experimental data. The panel data was collected in two waves prior to the 2010 British General Election. The laboratory experiment, designed to specifically test the emotion-induction capacity of campaigns, was conducted on British participants in the aftermath of the same elections. The results corroborate the theory. First, the analyses confirm that campaigns, not only can, but actually do induce emotions. Second, it is shown that emotions do influence political behavior as expected. Third, it is established that the effect of the campaign on turnout intentions is partly channeled through emotions. Finally, it is shown that campaign exposure indirectly affects vote choice by increasing the magnitude of the impact emotions have on the effect of partisanship on vote choice. Aside from the literature on campaign effects in Britain, the thesis also contributes to the emerging literature pertaining to the role of emotions in politics. Moreover, it contributes to the field of voting behaviour by extending our understanding of the psychological underpinnings of vote choice.

Buxton, Sharon L. "Shadows of emotion: emotional processing deficits in Parkinson's disease and their impact on social relationships." Thesis, University of Auckland, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/2292/6582.

Abstract:
Evidence suggests individuals with Parkinson's disease (PD) may be impaired at production and recognition of affective prosody and facial expressions of emotion. When united with social psychology's assertion that nonverbal cues, including facial expressions and voice tone, facilitate effective communication within social relationships, it suggests that these impairments impact negatively on quality of life for individuals with PD. This thesis aimed to investigate emotional processing deficits in PD, systematically, and their possible affect on social relationships. Thirty PD and 30 closely-matched control participants participated in three studies. Study 1 found that raters were less able to recognise emotional expressions from facial expressions and affective prosody in the PD group than the Control group. Study 2, using the Aprosodia Battery (Ross et al., 1997), found PD participants were impaired at recognition of affective prosody. A novel task was developed to assess recognition of facial expressions, comprising prototypical facial expressions and more subtle facial expressions. The PD group was impaired at recognition of subtle facial expressions but not prototypical facial expressions. Positive associations were found between performance on some recognition and production tasks in the PD group, providing support for an overall impairment in emotional processing in PD. When the PD group was subdivided based on side of symptom-onset, the group who developed right-sided symptoms first were more impaired compared to the Control group, than those who had left-sided onset of symptoms, suggesting a possible left-hemispheric lateralisation of emotional processing. Study 3, using a semi-structured interview, found that individuals with PD were less satisfied with their relationships with close others and acquaintances than the Control group, and that this was associated with how well the PD participants felt that others understood their facial expressions and affective prosody. Findings support the contribution of the basal ganglia to emotional processing, possibly as part of the thalamo-cortical loops, specifically, the skeleto-motor circuit, the lateral orbitofrontal circuit and the anterior cingulate circuit.

Abstract:
This doctoral thesis initially describes a theoretical basis of the respiratory anatomy into the different organs through the air circulates, from the external circulatory pathways (the mouth, the nose, the pharynx and the larynx)and the internal ones (the trachea, the bronchus and finally the lungs). The respiratory and ventilatory physiology are explained below, where the diaphragm is the protagonist, with the different types of ventilation that exist: clavicular, diaphragmatic, cost-abdominal and total, among others. The anatomy of the voice is still described, the human vocal apparatus is especially focused on the larynx and vocal folds. Subsequently we define the physiology of the voice: the phonation. It describes the mechanisms necessary for the voice to occur and here we clearly define the interrelation of the respiratory and speech apparatus. Afterwards a detailed description of the voice and of all its qualities and characteristics (the intensity, the tone, the timbre, the imposition, the projection and the articulation). We proceed with an acoustic and aerodynamic analysis of the voice and an exhaustive evaluation of the relationships that may exist with the emotional world. A second part explains and justifies the empirical process based on three instruments: interviews with experts that bring us closer to the evidence that exists in the subject, an online survey on the possible non-verbal impacts of voice in the world Business and finally a third instrument consisting of a survey based on ten voices considered a model that is passed to ten people of five years of age, who answer to a Likert test and then study the results. Finally conclusions are drawn and the voices with the greatest emotional impact are determined, as well as their possible applications. We close this thesis by concluding that there is a voice model that can improve business communication performance, all evidenced through the different instruments that have been used in the present work, mentioned above. We chose, according to these evidences, for a discourse with a rather agile tempo, without too many pauses and that include tonal inflections, with a prosody rich in tonalities, with a rather moderate volume and without influence on the part of the genre, although in the latter case you may have context-related exceptions.

Abstract:
For the organizational context of project management, several authors have pointed to its importance, since projects are executed by people and, to be successful, teamwork is required, and the project manager activity requires sufficient leadership skills to control impulses and manage effectively. This study sought the answer to the question: What is the impact of emotionally intelligent leadership on a project team at a financial institution? Through questionnaires and interviews, answered by 15 employees and 3 leaders of a Bank, it was concluded that managers have emotional intelligence and that this has a positive impact on relationships with employees, but they need to improve teamwork. According to Mersino's self-assessments of leaders, there is a discrepancy between perception and reality. Leaders perceive to have more emotional intelligence than they actually have. Briefly speaking, the leaders presented lower emotional intelligence characteristics than the employees, and the leaders with the lowest emotional intelligence points are those whose employees have more difficulty in communicating and taking attention.<br>info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion

Abstract:
Background: Firms steadily increase their entrepreneurial activities to maintain competitive advantages as today’s fast-paced business environment requires dynamic responding to increasing customer demands. Projects serve to internally coordinate and respond to external influences that require a firm to react. Meeting set objectives when managing projects is deemed as a necessity when endeavoring to stay competitive. The increased frequency of initiated projects resulting from this setting demands involved project managers to rapidly and effectively recover from project failure as subsequent project success often lies within the seeds of previous failures. Yet, failing can cause intense negative emotional reactions, oftentimes grief. Therefore, we aimed to explore the impact of grief on project managers’ recovery and learning after project failure within the scope of this research. Purpose: Our aim was to understand and reflect on project managers’ perspectives on how they recover from the negative emotional experience after project failure within organizations and what the role of grieving is within this process. We claim that organizations and project managers can utilize our findings to enhance their understanding of this complex interplay. Method: To meet our research aims, we conducted a qualitative multi-case study with an exploratory research design based on an abductive form of grounded theory. Our primary data were gathered through in-depth interviews with a semi-structured approach. Sixteen current or former project managers from a variety of industries were interviewed as they shared their experience on project failure. Finally, we used grounded analysis to make sense of and derive findings of the collected data. Conclusion: Our findings unveil the complex interrelations among project failure, grief, emotional recovery, and learning when surveying it as one intertwined process. We identified the influence of grief on project managers as two-fold: it can interfere with the recovery process and obstruct learning, yet, it can serve as a driving force for action and enhanced abilities. When utilizing beneficial aspects of project failure, organizational support plays an essential role - if mutually coordinated between organization and project managers.

Abstract:
The care and welfare of laboratory animals born, nurtured and experimented upon within a research facility is the primary function for animal technologists. While discharging these responsibilities the emotional needs of the carers require consideration, balancing their perceptions of animal care against the purpose for which the animals exist. As little published information is available on the emotional challenges faced by UK animal technologists, this thesis redresses the balance, exploring the subject in detail through qualitative and quantitative methods. Emotional dissonance, often expressed as felt emotion versus enacted emotion, is a negative output from Emotional Labour. Animal technologists operate in a service environment and the results demonstrate that they ‘act’ under duress and self-regulate which emotions to display. Using exploratory factor analysis the results illustrate two key drivers on felt and enacted emotions. These include internal elements associated with daily tasks elements such as euthanasia and external factors such as budgets over which they have little or no control. Emotional dissonance is shown to occur within various employment grades. Resultant emotions include, guilt, shame and sadness. These can lead to affects upon job satisfaction propagating feelings of workplace alienation, isolation and fear, particularly from antivivisectionist organisations. When organisational support was not forthcoming or lacked empathy, individuals deployed various coping methods. This demonstrates both management and organisational implications including gender, educational attainment and whether a person has staff supervision responsibilities. Observations drawn through both qualitative and quantitative research clearly signpost a spectrum of indicators of emotional dissonance leading to individual, managerial and organisational theoretical implications. In doing so, emotion knowledge has been increased on a previously under researched occupational sector existing within a largely secretive environment. The research on a hitherto largely unknown employment grouping provides insights that had previously existed only mainly in anecdotal ways. The results provide strong evidence to further support existing research demonstrating how roles with significant emotional components directly impact upon individuals and the organisations that employ them.

Abstract:
This thesis reports on a study of the emotional impact on sibling bone marrow donors. lt considers in particular donation that takes place during their adolescence and was prompted by the concern of medical and nursing colleagues managing the treatment of young people with cancer. The study interviewed five donors and discusses these interviews using the lens of psychoanalytic theory to offer a deeper understanding of these donors' experiences. Understood in this way, particularly using the psychoanalytic concept of projective identification, a main finding of the study is that whilst these donors would not have refused to donate, based on the love and duty of a filial relationship, the donation evoked complex emotions arising from the sense of the physiological merging of two people. The study makes some recommendations to change current practice within the hospital where I work in order to improve the psychological management and care of sibling bone marrow donors.

The aim of the study was to find out if there are features of an image which influence the emotional output to improve the affective pictorial stimuli for advertisements especially in tourism. The present study bases upon emotional pictures of the IAPS which were modified in several ways. In a first step the 18 most desperate images according to Russell's affective space were selected. The second step was the modification from an original picture to a grayscale picture, to a low luminance picture, to a high luminance picture, to a vertical reflected picture, to a high chroma picture and to a blurred picture. In a third step participants were asked to fill out a questionnaire and to rate the evoked emotions using SAM. Results show, that there are important factors of an image which influence the emotional reaction and which could be used to improve the pictorial stimuli for marketing.

Abstract:
This thesis focuses on the acquisition of emotional competence (EC) skills in adults and its impact on well being. The first part of the thesis is dedicated to the definition of EC, including a review of EC in order to better understand and operationalize its main dimensions and correlates. We also present a systematic review of EC intervention studies on adult populations in order to assess their outcomes and make recommendations for the development and implementation of future interventions. We then provide a theoretical and practical framework for emotional competence (EC) based interventions. We describe the main components of an EC intervention, underline the important characteristics of the intervention pedagogy and discuss theoretical and practical implications of this framework. In a second part we investigate whether a sustainable improvement in emotional competencies is possible in adults, and what are the conditions and effects of this improvement on well-being (e.g. on mental and physical health and quality of interpersonal relationships). Results of three empirical studies confirm that EC can be significantly increased following an intervention (and compared to a control group) and that this intervention impacts favourably personal and interpersonal well-being as measured by psychological health, quality of relationship and employability.A last part of the thesis explores the mechanisms underlying this improvement of competencies and well-being. We focus on emotional acceptance, self-compassion, self kindness and behavioural flexibility. Because there was no scale measuring self-compassion or self kindness in French, we validate two scales and assess the relationships between these constructs and well-being.We then examined the possible benefits of emotional acceptance and behavioural flexibility in a randomized controlled study, showing how increasing emotional competence can enhance these change processes and how these processes can, in turn, enhance well-being.This research helps to further elucidate the role of active change processes in EC increase related to the promotion of well-being.<br>Doctorat en Sciences psychologiques et de l'éducation<br>info:eu-repo/semantics/nonPublished

Abstract:
Emotions are an important underlying factor that may interact with pressure and other situational variables to influence auditors’ judgments and decisions. This study seeks to identify emotional intelligence (EI) as a key factor in dealing with emotions and pressures in an audit context. In this paper, I focus on how EI may influence the relation between job pressures (i.e., time budget pressure and client incentive pressure) on the auditor’s judgment. Specifically, I investigate the moderating effect of emotional intelligence on auditor judgments when auditors experience both internal and external pressures. The results suggest that the moderating influence of EI on auditor judgments can effectively reduce auditors’ tendency to engage in dysfunctional behavior in order to improve audit quality. Furthermore, there is a positive relation between EI and professional skepticism suggesting that auditors with high EI are more skeptical and assess higher risk than auditors with low EI. Finally, moderation analysis suggests that EI is a significant mechanism which drives the joint effects of different type of pressures on auditor judgments.

Bedford, Laura Elizabeth. "The emotional impact of screening for lung cancer." Thesis, University of Nottingham, 2017. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/47077/.

Full text
Abstract:
Lung cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer and the most common cause of cancer related death worldwide. Population-based lung cancer screening programmes have been initiated in the USA and could soon be implemented in other countries. The overarching purpose of this thesis was to explore the emotional impact of lung cancer screening. The research was conducted as part of a clinical trial that was investigating the effectiveness of a blood autoantibody test, EarlyCDT®-Lung, in identifying individuals at the risk of lung cancer. A systematic review was conducted that aimed to identify factors associated with the emotional impact of screening for lung cancer. Participants with indeterminate test results, current smokers and females were more likely to experience negative non-specific and specific emotional outcomes. In addition to highlighting several key factors associated with higher levels of emotional distress following screening, factors that warranted further research were also identified. Such factors included age, education level, marital status, ethnic origin, and perceived risk of developing lung cancer. Finally, important methodological and theoretical limitations in the literature were identified. One key methodological limitation was that no studies measured positive emotional outcomes. A longitudinal study was conducted exploring the impact of lung cancer screening on positive affect, negative affect, lung cancer worry and distress specific to screening for lung cancer. Participants from each of the EarlyCDT®-positive, EarlyCDT®-negative, and control groups completed questionnaires containing emotional outcome measures at pre-randomisation and then at one, three, six and 12 months post randomisation. Scores for each outcome measure were described by groups over time and multilevel regression modelling was used to compare scores over time within and between groups. Results were reassuring as screening was found to have no clinically important impact on positive affect, negative affect, frequency of lung cancer worry or impact of lung cancer worry on mood and ability to perform daily activities. Although screening specific distress in the EarlyCDT®-positive group was significantly higher than that of the EarlyCDT®-negative group, it did reduce over time. Statistically significant and clinically important increases in the proportion of participants reporting anxiety about the results of future tests/treatments were identified. As a result of this finding, a further study was carried out to identify factors that could influence an individual’s level of anxiety about the results of future tests/treatment. Participants more at risk of reporting anxiety about the results of future tests/treatment were younger participants, non-white participants, current smokers and participants who did not own or have a mortgage on their home. Psychological variables associated with increased anxiety were: higher general anxiety scores, higher depression scores, higher negative affect scores, participants who reported that they were upset when they thought about their risk of lung cancer, participants who were worried about getting lung cancer, and those who reported the highest impact of lung cancer worry on mood and ability to perform daily activities. The final chapter of this thesis presents the results of a randomised controlled trial embedded within the emotional outcomes study (described above), which evaluated the effect of timing of monetary incentives (£5 voucher sent with questionnaire vs. £5 voucher sent on receipt of questionnaire) on the following outcomes: study participation rates, questionnaire response rates over time, the number of reminders sent and the completeness of returned questionnaires over time. Previous research had found that monetary incentives were useful in increasing response rates in clinical trials. Results from this trial extended the evidence base by showing that the timing of monetary incentives makes no difference to the above outcomes. In each chapter the findings of this thesis are discussed in terms of their contribution to knowledge. Recommendations for future research and clinical practice are also made within each chapter.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to investigate social workers' impact of emotional work with their clients and what strategies they use to deal with it. Swedish research in this area is very limited. International research shows that both social workers and (primarily) healthcare professionals are emotionally affected. The importance of awareness was emphasized and the requirement for more knowledge. This study was based on seven qualitative interviews conducted with social workers. The theoretical approach included the concepts of compassion fatigue and compassion satisfaction and the theory of coping-strategies. We analyzed the material thematically which resulted in the conclusion that social workers are both positively and negatively affected emotionally by their work. The impact has been shown primarily through evidence of exhaustion. Each social worker interviewed managed the negative impact of their work with individual strategies. The general strategy was to prioritize their health and create time for recovery. The results illustrated  the need for an increase in understanding of the importance of valuing the well-being of social workers. This would benefit not just social workers, but also the clients they serve.

Abstract:
Despite an expanding interest in the concept of Emotional Intelligence (EI), difficulties in definition, measurement and reconciling competing models has led to an argument that the practical application of EI has overtaken current levels of understanding and research (Matthews, Roberts, & Zeidner, 2004; Zeidner, Roberts, & Matthews, 2002). This is particularly relevant within education where a large range of social and emotional learning (SEL) programmes, designed to increase EI in pupils, vary drastically in their intended outcomes and methods, quality of material and the frequency and quality of evaluation (Hoffman, 2009). To date, the majority of research has been US based and the small quantity of UK research has been focused either at the primary level, or has assessed the perception of impact. This means the potential success for SEL to positively improve UK secondary aged pupil outcomes is untested. The aim of the current study was the assessment of the SEAL programme, a National Strategy for English secondary schools designed to positively influence a range of pupil outcomes, including increased emotional literacy, better behaviour and improved mental well-being. Additionally, the validity of the underlying relationship between EI and favourable outcomes, beyond identified socio-demographics, was measured. The study utilised a predominately quantitative design with a final sample of 22 schools (approximately 2360 pupils) implementing the SEAL programme, and 19 ‘matched comparison’ schools (approximately 1991 pupils), selected on the basis of similar school level characteristics. Pupils from every school completed annual self-rated assessments of their emotional literacy (using the ELAI), mental well-being and pro social behaviour (using the SDQ) over a three year period. A small case study element (9 SEAL Schools) was selected from the larger quantitative sample to provide context to the quantitative results. Multi-level modelling (a statistical technique for examining hierarchically clustered data) was used to analyse the results. After controlling for socio-demographic factors, results indicated a marginal non-significant effect in pupil’s emotional literacy and mental health difficulties as a result of attending a SEAL school, however no effect on prosocial behaviour was found. Results also indicated a differential effect on the basis of the pupil variables of SEN provision, gender and ethnicity, which was consistent with very little variation at school level reported. A significant relationship was found between emotional literacy, mental health difficulties and pro social behaviour, indicating a valid theoretical framework, despite the lack of a significant effect of the SEAL programme. Further examination revealed that the relationship between the variables may be more complex than originally theorised, although difficulties with high degrees of confound between the factors limit this interpretation. Implications and directions for future research are also discussed.

Hadzidedic, Suncica. "Introducing emotion-based personalisation to cancer websites : the impact of emotions on website personalisation and reuse intentions." Thesis, University of Warwick, 2017. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/100896/.

Full text
Abstract:
Affective computing has received substantial attention in the recent time. However, its application to personalised online cancer services is understudied. Therefore, this research primarily explores the role of emotions in predicting the preference for personalisation features, and in forming behavioural intentions in cancer website usage. Secondly, this research seeks to understand whether users of cancer websites prefer to be offered emotion-based personalisation to other options – personalised or non-personalised. Emotion-based personalisation was implemented, in several phases, on the cancer website developed for the purpose of this research. A number of controlled experiments were carried out, in which users interacted with the cancer website and evaluated its personalisation features. The findings confirm that users more likely reuse a cancer website when they are satisfied with its personalisation services and find the website usable. Moreover, both negative emotions (e.g., sadness and fear) and positive ones (e.g., interest) encourage reuse intentions. Post-use negative emotions are primarily influenced by the website’s usability, while satisfaction with personalisation and usefulness of adaptive and adaptable services intensifies positive emotions. The website is perceived usable and it induces user satisfaction when its personalisation is considered useful. The findings imply that discrete emotions (of the nine basic emotions studied here) stimulate or discourage interaction with certain website features and content. Moreover, emotions experienced at the start of website use affect the perception about the usefulness of individual features available on the website. Generally, users experiencing positive emotions are eager to explore the website and be involved in the tailoring process. The effect of negative emotions is more difficult to generalise; it depends on the specific emotion and the personalisation feature in question. Overall, negative emotions are more likely to inhibit the use or perception of website features that require providing user personal information and interests, or entail extensive engagement from the user side. With regard to the second aim, this research suggests that emotion-based personalisation on a cancer website is preferred, however not significantly over generic personalisation or no personalisation at all. Nevertheless, the findings urged for further research. The survey and interview results consistently showed that: personalisation was perceived as useful, users were satisfied with it, that the website with emotion-based personalisation had the highest usability and most users prefer that type of personalisation. Moreover, repeat visitors and long-time cancer website users, who have been directly affected by cancer, decisively desired emotion-based personalisation. Overall, this research provides multiple theoretical and practical implications for personalisation adoption on cancer websites and stimulating reuse intentions. It recommends rules for adaptation and personalisation algorithms that incorporate user emotions. Moreover, it extends the existing theory and proposes a framework for understanding the emotion- and personalisation-related factors that influence intentions to revisit and reuse a personalised cancer website.

Abstract:
This thesis deals with workplace bullying (WB). It aims to study on one hand its effects onorganizational justice (OJ), psychosocial safety climate (PSC), psychological distress, intention toleave the company and emotional commitment. On the other hand, it seeks to study the mediatingrole of the social support of the hierarchy and the theory of self-determination (SDT) (psychologicalneed satisfaction and frustration). To meet these objectives, three studies were conducted. The firststudy evaluates, firstly, the effects of WB on psychological distress and the intention to leave thecompany and secondly the mediating role of the social support of the hierarchy. The second studyproposes to test the mediating role of the satisfaction of psychological needs between theorganizational and individual inducers (WB, OJ, the intention to leave the company and theemotional commitment). A third study examines the effects of BWP and PSC on individual inducers(intention to leave the company and emotional engagement) in the health sector. This last study alsobrings out the mediating role of the frustration of psychological needs. In conclusion, the results ofthe thesis attest the negative impact of bullying at work and other factors such as OJ and PSCamong employees. It should be noted that these results also reveal that psychological needs(satisfaction and frustration) play a determinant role in an organizational environment. The generaldiscussion of the thesis therefore releases the implications and conclusions of the studies

Abstract:
Employees who are able to use their emotions intelligently can contribute meaningfully towards building an emotionally intelligent organisation, one in which everyone take responsibility for increasing his or her own emotional intelligence, for using it in relations with others, and for applying the skills of emotional intelligence to the organisation as a whole. The lack of emotional intelligence, however, undermines both an individual’s and a company’s growth and success. Expressing emotions within the workplace has for many years been considered inappropriate and irrelevant to business. This research study points to the fact that an overwhelming amount of research shows that not only are emotions very much a part if the work experience but, to a large degree, set the course that companies should follow. This research study firstly discusses the core components of emotional intelligence and its impact on individuals and how they relate to others. The study further focuses on the impact that emotional intelligence has on aspects that contribute to organisational effectiveness. This study suggests that emotional intelligence within companies could result in a situation where employees communicate with understanding and respect and where confidence and enthusiasm in the organisation are instilled. Knowing one’s own emotions and controlling them; recognizing emotions in others and managing them; and self-motivation are key dimensions of emotional intelligence covered in the theoretical perspective of emotional intelligence discussed in Chapter Two. This study points to the benefits of emotional intelligence as an indispensable element not only in creating a profitable business but also in leading a successful life. The findings discussed in Chapter Six indicate a reasonable level of emotional intelligence amongst employees at GMSA who participated in the survey. Recommendations from the study indicated a need for training in various aspects of emotional intelligence in order to derive the benefits of improved organisational effectiveness and profitability.

Abstract:
This study explort1d the impact of emotional intelligence on supervisor/employee communication. The purpose of th~s study was to investigate 1) how emotional intelligence affects supervisor and employee communication from both supervisors' and . employees' perspectives; 2) how supervisors and employees perceive the effects of emotional intelligence on the active listening of supervisors; and 3) relationships among supervisor/employee communication, emotional intelligence, and active listening. This study is expected to facilitate a better understanding of the relationship between active listening and the emotional intelligence of supervisors. Focus groups were conducted to collect sup~rvisors' and employees' perceptions and thoughts on communication, emotional intelligence, and active listening. This . method was used to identify emotional intelligent competencies related to effective communication between supervisors and employees and active listening. This study also examined how supervisors should demonstrate those .competencies. The data collected generated particular themes and relationships between supervisor/employee communication, emotional intelligence, and active listening and to answer the research questions that were posed for the study. Participants in the study discussed the importance of establishing trust in the relationship, listening to their employees' ideas, and valuing a personal relationship with ,..---------- their employees. When looking at the impact of emotional intelligence on supervisor/employee communication the results from this study showed that supervisors understood that emotions are part of the work environment and listening to employees is critical. Employees in the focus groups believed that supervisors need the ability to deal with emotions in the workplace and understand that sometimes those feelings are generated in an employee's personal life. The key to developing positive supervisory communication is through supervisors role-modeling critical competencies related to emotional intelligence. Establishing trust in the supervisor/employee relationship is directly correlated with effective communication. Active listening is one method supervisors can use to demonstrate and establish trust in the relationship.

Fischer, Melanie Watkins. "The Impact of Emotional Labor on Burnout Over Time : How Emotional Work Impacts Well-Being at Work." Thesis, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/1805/18886.

Full text
Abstract:
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI)<br>Burnout is the emotional, mental, and physical strain associated with prolonged work stress (Maslach, Jackson, & Leiter, 1986). Although this is a problem in many professions, mental health providers are at a heightened risk of burnout (Salyers et al., 2015). One of the reasons for this increase in burnout may be the demands put on mental health workers to manage their own emotions while dealing with the intense emotional and mental health situations of their clients. Emotional labor, or the management of emotions at work, is conceptualized as two different emotion regulation strategies: surface acting and deep acting (Grandey, 2000). Surface acting, or faking emotions, has been associated with significant mental health and job-related problems, including burnout in populations such as call center employees and service workers. The psychological impact of deep acting, or internally attempting to change your emotions, is less clear, and may actually be associated with positive outcomes (Hülsheger & Schewe, 2011). However, little work has looked at the impact of emotional labor on mental health providers. The current study aims to examine how surface acting and deep acting are related to burnout over time in mental health providers. The proposed study is secondary analysis from a Patient Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) funded trial “The impact of burnout on patient-centered care: A comparative effectiveness trial in mental health (Salyers et al., 2018). 193 Clinicians reported burnout symptoms and frequency of employing emotional labor strategies at baseline, with 127 clinicians completing all four time-points: baseline, 3 months, 6 months, and 12 months. Data were analyzed using multiple regression analyses and cross-lagged panels to examine the impact of surface acting and deep acting on burnout over the course of 12 months. Surface acting was significantly associated with all three dimensions of burnout (emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and reduced personal accomplishment) cross-sectionally. Using cross-lagged panel models, depersonalization at baseline significantly predicted surface acting three and six months later. Surface acting and personal accomplishment had a bidirectional relationship: increased surface acting at baseline was associated with personal accomplishment at three months and decreased personal accomplishment at baseline and was associated with increased surface acting at three and six months. Deep acting moderated the relationship between surface acting and personal accomplishment at baseline, but not longitudinally. The current study is the first study that has examined the relationship between surface acting and burnout in community mental health professionals. While surface acting may not result in burnout three months later for dimensions other than personal accomplishment, two dimensions of burnout (depersonalization and decreased personal accomplishment) were associated with higher levels of surface acting three and six months later. This suggests that surface acting may have consequences for feelings of accomplishment at work, but more so, may be used a coping mechanism in reaction to some aspects of burnout.

de, Vos Svetlana. "Investigating effective social marketing campaigns: the direct and indirect impacts of fear, challenge, and fear mixed with challenge appeals on help-seeking intentions." Thesis, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/2440/97993.

Full text
Abstract:
The primary aim of the current study is to empirically test a novel conceptual framework which united the Cognitive Phenomenological Theory of Emotions (Lazarus, Kanner and Folkman, 1980), the Revised Protection Motivation Model (Arthur and Quester, 2004), and the Heuristic Systematic Model (Eagly and Chaiken, 1993) to investigate the impact of various emotions on help-seeking intentions (BI). In particular, this research was undertaken to investigate the persuasive power of emotional advertising eliciting fear, challenge and fear mixed with challenge in consumers to induce help-seeking behavioural intentions in social marketing context. The study seeks to evaluate the direct and indirect impact of fear, challenge and fear mixed with challenge on behavioural intentions via systematic mode and depth of information processing (SMIP/DP) and attitudes towards the advertisement (AT). The study also strive to determine whether respective influence of fear mixed with challenge emotional advertising serves as a conditioning stimulus to enhance systematic mode and depth of information processing, and indirectly, through attitudes towards the advertisement, influence the strongest intentions to seek professional help in comparison to fear or challenge appeals. Since marketing communication is progressing to an era of tailored messages targeted at individuals, this study investigates a-priori individual differences such as tolerance of ambiguity, tolerance of negative emotions, involvement with the advertisement, response efficacy and self-accountability to unveil the unique information processing patterns among consumers exposed to the emotional advertising. The study is based on mixed research design and comprised of qualitative (thematic analysis) and quantitative stages (quasi–experiment with web-based survey). Results of the study empirically confirm that emotional blend of fear mixed with challenge indirectly via cognitive mediators of SMIP/DP and AT exerted the strongest positive impact on help-seeking intentions in comparison to fear or challenge appeals in at-risk population. Across all emotional appeals, heuristically proceeded messages resulted in non-significant impact on behavioural intentions. Additionally, the empirical results of the current research suggest that market segmentation should be effectively applied when using fear mixed with challenge in advertising, since a-priori individual characteristic such as tolerance of ambiguity weakens the relationship between attitude towards the advertisement and help-seeking behavioural intentions in at–risk population. The moderating role of involvement with the advertisement was also supported to strengthen the direct relationship between SMIP/DP and AT regardless of felt emotion/s. The research provides important information to social marketers seeking to exploit the persuasive impacts of emotional advertising on inducing help-seeking intentions in at-risk consumers.<br>Thesis (Ph.D.) -- University of Adelaide, Business School, 2015

The most direct way to communicate is emotions which would change by external stimuli and advertisings are one of the best ways to cause emotions. If the product forms the diffusion, advertising is a good way to drive sentiment. In addition, the emotional arousal will stir up the speed of messages. When we are in high emotional arousal, it will increase the actions related behavior and make advertisings easier to be passed on. Because of emotional arousal, word of mouth is produced and products are spread out. In this thesis, I design 2(high / low emotional arousal) X 2 (high / low involvement) experiments to investigate the impacts of emotional arousal and involvement on word of mouth within and outside the social groups.
