Pohl, Kirsten. "Ethical reflection and emotional involvement in computer games." Universität Potsdam, 2008. http://opus.kobv.de/ubp/volltexte/2008/2465/.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper focuses on the way computer games refer to the context of their formation and ask how they might stimulate the user’s understanding of the world around him. The central question is: Do computer games have the potential to inspire our reflection about moral and ethical issues? And if so, by which means do they achieve this? Drawing on concepts of the ethical criticism in literary studies as proposed by Wayne C. Booth and Martha Nussbaum, I will argue in favor of an ethical criticism for computer games. Two aspects will be brought into focus: the ethical reflection in the artifact as a whole, and the recipient’s emotional involvement. The paper aims at evaluating the interaction of game content and game structure in order to give an adequate insight into the way computer games function and affect us.

Abstract:

The reciprocal interaction between children and their environment can affect their development. Certain environmental interactions such as problematic parent-child relationships or peer rejection in school are associated with the development of emotional and behavioral disorders. Children with emotional and behavioral disorders experience difficulties in a variety of areas including academics, social relationships, behaviors, and life outcomes. These emotional and behavioral disorders can progress or regress depending on relationships occurring within the child’s environment. Positive, healthy, and caring parent and teacher involvement in the lives of these children is an important factor. When parents and teachers become involved, especially when they work together to set mutual goals to help with success, children with emotional and behavioral disorders may see improvements in their problem behaviors, experience more successful achievement in academics, and develop in a direction that is more normative rather than problematic. This information can be applied through an online educational module for parents of children with EBD that aims to educate these parents on the avenues to and importance of involvement.

Larosa, Kayla Nicole. "Parent Predictors of Social-Emotional Strengths in Kindergartners." Scholar Commons, 2015. http://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/6532.

Full text
Abstract:
Strengths-based assessment is providing an alternative to the typical way that psychologists approach mental health in the literature. Social-emotional strengths are multidimensional, positive indicators of mental health that include Social Competence, Self-Regulation, Empathy, and Responsibility. Limited research has been conducted to examine the potential connection between parental involvement in children’s education, specifically in the areas of supporting a child’s learning at home, parental involvement within educational settings, and parenting practices (discipline, Monitoring, use of Praise and Incentives) in connection with social-emotional strengths. With an emphasis on prevention of mental health problems, parents are an important and potentially untapped resource for school-based interventions to promote social-emotional strengths. Multiple informants in strengths-based assessment has also received limited attention in the research, therefore potential differences in parent and teacher ratings of social-emotional strengths were explored. The relationships between parenting variables and social-emotional strengths were examined. The sample included 166 kindergarten children. Teacher ratings of children’s strengths were available for all 166 of these children. Parent ratings of children’s strengths were available for a subset (n = 122) of these 166 children. Participants were from both the U.S. and Canada. Measures used to assess parenting variables included the Parent Involvement Project Questionnaire-Modified, the Fast Track Project Parent-Teacher Involvement Questionnaire, the Parent Practices Interview, Parental Support for Learning Scale, Trust Scale from the Family-School Relationship Survey, and the Social-Emotional Assets and Resilience Scale (SEARS)-Parent, and the SEARS-Teacher short form. All together, parenting variables explained 37% of the variance in Self-Regulation/Responsibility, 29% of the variance in Social Competence, 29% of the variance in Empathy, 37% of the variance in Total Social-Emotional Strengths as rated by parents, and 20% of the variance in Total Strengths as rated by teachers. In terms of individual predictors of the parent-rated strengths sample, Positive Verbal Discipline and gender (female status) were significant positive predictors of Self-Regulation/Responsibility. This indicated that the higher the use of Positive Verbal Discipline, the higher the levels of Self-Regulation/Responsibility. Supportive Parent Involvement, Positive Verbal Discipline, and gender (female status) significantly predicted Social Competence, also in a positive direction. This demonstrated that the higher the level of Supportive Parent Involvement and Positive Verbal Discipline, the higher the level of Social Competence. Parent perception of his/her Time and Energy, Praise and Incentives, and the child’s gender (female status) positively predicted Empathy; Monitoring negatively predicted Empathy. For Time and Energy and Praise and Incentives, this indicated that the higher the level of these parenting variables, the more positively Empathy was rated by parents. Monitoring moved in the opposite direction of Empathy; as Monitoring increased, Empathy decreased. Positive Verbal Discipline and gender (female status) predicted Total Strengths rated by parents in a positive direction; as Positive Verbal Discipline increased, so did Total Parent-Rated Strengths. For teacher ratings of strengths, Trust of the child’s teacher and gender (female status) predicted Total Strengths in a positive direction. This indicated that as Trust of the child’s teacher increased, so did the level of teacher-rated Total Social-Emotional Strengths. Female status was consistently associated with more positive ratings of the social-emotional domains and Total Social-Emotional Strengths. Teachers and parents had moderate levels of association (r = .48) in rating of kindergarten students’ Total Social-Emotional Strengths. In summary, all parenting variables were predictive or associated with social-emotional outcomes except for Appropriate Discipline, and Monitoring had a negative relationship with parent-rated Empathy. Socioeconomic status was also not found to be significantly predictive or associated with social-emotional domains. Parenting practices such as Positive Verbal Discipline and gender were particularly predictive of social-emotional domains. Implications for research and practice are outlined.

Abstract:
The present dissertation examines the impact of advertising message involvement (AMI) and the type of ad (ADTYPE) on the nature (cognitive versus affective) and level of abstraction of the information that is encoded during ad exposure. In addition, it examines the impact of brand response involvement (BRI) and the type of purchase motives (TPM) on the nature and level of abstraction of the information that is used for making a judgment or choice.
An experiment using 372 subjects was conducted. A 2x2x2x2 between subjects design manipulated AMI (low versus high), ADTYPE (rational versus emotional), BRI (low versus high), and TPM (cognitive versus affective). Results indicated that ADTYPE determines the nature of the information that is encoded during ad exposure, whereas AMI determines the level of abstraction of cognitive (but not affective) information encoded. Results regarding the impact of BRI and TPM were not conclusive.

Mouawad, Roy. "Student Involvement in Government: Antecedents and Outcomes." Doctoral thesis, Universitat Ramon Llull, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/462857.

Abstract:
Student involvement is crucial for the effectiveness and efficiency of education. Government is a major form of involvement through which students represent their peers, participate in the university’s decision-making processes, and manage on-campus activities of organizations and clubs. Involvement has a visible impact on oneself, peers, faculty, administrators, and environment (educational experience). Yet, this concept has not received the proper attention, and research on its antecedents and outcomes remains scarce. The significance of this thesis lies in the incorporation of theories (e.g. emotional intelligence, experiential learning) from various fields (management, education, and psychology) to address this issue i.e. to better understand the concepts that contribute to involvement and, conversely, those that involvement contributes to. Hence, the main question is: Do learning styles, competencies (emotional, social, and cognitive), and operating philosophies account for post-education success of students involved in government experiences? This thesis comprises three studies. The first study analyzes learning styles, emotional and social competencies, and operating philosophies as antecedents of involvement. The second study analyzes the relationship between emotional, social, and cognitive competencies and involvement. Finally, the third study analyzes the impact of involvement on variables related to objective and subjective success (job offers received, life satisfaction, job satisfaction, etc.). These studies employ non-experimental research designs (survey research). The unit of analysis is the individual: international MBA students that participated in a leadership-development program at ESADE Business School (Universitat Ramon Llull). Data were collected using surveys (self-report and peer assessment) that consist of subjective and objective measures. The quality of this research is critically assessed and possible limitations and threats to validity are presented. Furthermore, implications for research and practice are provided in addition to suggestions that can be useful to educational institutions, organizations, researchers, students, and practitioners. Finally, future research lines are recommended.

Abstract:
Current research shows that grandparents have made significant contributions to at-risk families. However, few studies have examined the benefits of grandparenting in non-at-risk populations. This study considered whether emotional involvement with a grandparent is associated with prosocial behavior in adolescent grandchildren and examines the mediating role of empathy and perspective taking. A longitudinal sample of 500 participants were taken from waves two thru five of the Flourishing Families Project (FFP) and used to construct a latent growth curve model. Results indicate that emotional involvement with a grandparent was positively linked with initial levels of prosocial behavior in grandchildren. Furthermore, results indicated that empathy and perspective taking partially mediated the connection between grandparent's involvement and the initial levels of prosocial behavior in their grandchildren. Discussion focuses on the distinct contribution grandparents give to families.

Full text
Abstract:
Depression is characterized by motivational symptoms such as anergia, fatigue and psychomotor slowing. These are highly resistant to treatment and often remain as residual symptoms after antidepressant drug therapy. It has been suggested that these effort-based symptoms are related to dysfunctions in mesolimbic dopamine (DA). Thus, in the present dissertation has been characterized the impact of DA depletion and the ability of different antidepressants in reverse this DA depletion in several animal models that evaluate behavioral activation to escape an aversive situation or to approach and vigorously interact with a highly preferred reinforcer that competes with reinforcers by more passive behaviors. The effect of DA depletion and antidepressants also was studied in rodent models of anxiety-related behavior, another symptom common in some depressed people.

Full text
Abstract:
In this study, the role of three neuropeptides, calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP), arginine vasopressin (AVP) and oxytocin (OXT), in pain-related behaviors was investigated. Using two strains of inbred mice exhibiting different CGRP expression levels, we had shown before that in the peripheral nervous system CGRP determines the threshold for thermal pain. Here, we extended this finding to the central nervous system. Moreover, the contribution of brain CGRP to the control of locomotion, anxiety- and depression-like behavior was investigated. Pharmacological manipulation of CGRP signaling did not influence anxiety-like behavior, but central administration of CGRP receptor antagonists increased locomotion whereas central injection of CGRP elicited an anti-depressive-like effect. To investigate whether disruption of physiological CGRP-, AVP-, or OXTergic signaling would alter pain and pain-related behaviors, knock out (KO) mouse lines deficient in either the calcitonin-like receptor (CLR), the vasopressin 1 A receptor (V1AR) or the oxytocin receptor (OTR) were used. Heterozygous CLR mutants (HET) were behaviorally screened for a nociceptive phenotype, in addition to undergoing tests for locomotion, anxiety-, depression- and schizophrenia-like behavior. CLR HETs were indistinguishable from wild-type (WT) littermates throughout all assays. With respect to V1AR and OTR KOs we focused on nociception, and did not detect major differences between KOs and WTs.However, analgesia elicited by systemically administered AVP or OXT was preserved in WT mice and OTR KOs, yet absent in V1AR KOs, suggesting the analgesic effects of OXT to be V1AR-mediated. This observation was confirmed using V1AR and OTR specific antagonists. Scratching, a centrally mediated effect of AVP and OXT was also impaired in V1AR KOs, but intact in OTR KOs. Further, we demonstrate that in the mouse OTR binding sites densely label the substantia gelatinosa, whereas V1AR binding sites are only weakly labeled throughout the spinal cord. In contrast, V1ar mRNA expression largely exceeds Oxtr mRNA expression in dorsal root ganglia, and was detected mainly in small- and medium-sized neurons. In summary, we have shown that central CGRP has pronocicpetive and antidepressant properties and we have demonstrated that the antinociceptive effects of AVP and OXT are mediated by the V1AR.

Abstract:
Purpose: The aim of this Bachelor Thesis is to explore what makes an interactive viral marketing campaign effective in terms of Word-of-Mouth. Background: With the growth of Internet, a new force of marketing has developed where the consumer is more involved in the marketing process. This thesis studies the underlying emotions and motivations of consumer incentives to engage in positive Word-of-Mouth, regarding an interactive viral marketing campaign. Method: In order to fulfil the purpose of this study a case study is performed. An inductive approach is followed and qualitative research in the form of a netnography and interviews are used to collect the empirical material that is required in order to answer the given research questions. The netnography was performed on Facebook and ten respondents from the netnographical study were invited to participate in interviews. Conclusion: Based on the frame of reference, a strong relationship was expected between certain emotions and the willingness to share or discuss Tipp-ex’s campaign. However, the results indicate that other variables such as Comprehension and Personalisation might have a greater effect on Word-of-Mouth incentives. Regarding motivations, Message- involvement was found to be the motivation that triggers a consumer to engage in Word-of-Mouth.

Abstract:
Involving parents in school-based learning can be difficult for both schools and parents, and more innovative approaches to involving parents are needed. Internet-based programs have the potential to address barriers to parent participation, but more research is needed to determine the effectiveness and social validity of such programs. This study explored the social validity of WhyTry for Parents, an internet-based program for parents of students enrolled in WhyTry, a school-based social and emotional learning program for students in grades K through 12. Eleven elementary, middle, and high schools across the United States participated in the study by inviting parents of WhyTry students to use the WhyTry for Parents curriculum. Whether or not parents utilized the curriculum, they were invited to take a survey about the importance they placed on the program's goals, procedures, and effects, and to give reasons for their level of participation in the program. A total of 836 parents were invited to take part in the study, and 14 parents made up the final sample. Coordinators (n = 10) of the WhyTry program at each school were invited to participate in interviews focused on their perspectives of parent participation rates and the WhyTry for Parents program. Regardless of whether parents utilized the curriculum, they found a high degree of social validity in WhyTry for Parents; however, they suggested that the curriculum be simplified and made more accessible. WhyTry coordinators suggested that low participation rates were due to parent resistance, and that helping parents to understand WhyTry might help overcome this resistance. Parents and coordinators suggested that the curriculum be available by app to improve accessibility. Future research should explore the social validity of WhyTry for Parents from the perspective of educators, who implement the program at the school level. Studying the costs associated with internet-based parent programs for both schools and parents may also be prudent.

Trinh, Scott M. "Increasing Positive Social Interaction Among Kindergarten Students." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2012. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/6468.

Full text
Abstract:
The current literature lacks empirically-supported preventative approaches for kindergarten students who are socially withdrawn and behind in the development of social skills. Furthermore, parents are underutilized in interventions during this critical period of social development. In response to this need, a classroom-based intervention consisting of (a) social skills training, (b) self-evaluation and reinforcement, (c) home notes and parent involvement, and (d) adult mediation was implemented to increase the positive social engagement of three kindergarten students. The effects of this intervention were evaluated on the playground during recess using partial interval recording of target students’ positive or negative engagement with at least one peer. Improvements of social interactions on the playground were demonstrated by each target student during the implementation of the intervention, but only one student maintained these improvements in the follow-up phase. Future studies should investigate whether addressing the limitations of this study would yield stronger results with this under-identified population of students.

Abstract:
This study aimed to examine relative effect of perceived expressed emotion of schizophrenic patients and their caregivers&rsquo
expressed emotion on the symptom severity and quality of life at the framework of Vulnerability-Stress Model. Before the main study, for evaluating the psychometric properties of the Perceived Expressed Emotion Scale (PEES) a pilot study was conducted with the seventy five patients. Results of the pilot study provided support for the reliability and validity of PEES that had two factors, namely, criticism/hostility and emotional over-involvement. The main study was conducted at two stages. At time one assessment, one hundred and sixteen patients were administered PEES, Positive and Negative Symptom Scale for schizophrenia (PANSS), WHO&rsquo
s Quality of Life Scale (WHOQOL-BREF), and open ended questions to explore the views about their illness. Their caregivers were administered Expressed Emotion Scale (EES). After six month follow up, time two assessment was conducted 103 patients remained on the study using PANSS and WHOQOL-BREF. In order to test the main hypothesis of the study a series of repeated ANOVA analyses were conducted. The results revealed that patients&rsquo
perceived expressed emotion was a more robust component on quality of life and symptom severity than caregivers&rsquo
expressed emotion. It was found that patients&rsquo
perceived criticism/hostility was a toxic element on positive and negative symptoms, and total scores of PANSS, whereas patients&rsquo
perceived emotional over-involvement had a protector effect on social and environmental domain of standardized culture of WHOQOL-BREF. It was seen that symptom severity evaluated using PANSS improved from time one assessment to time two assessment. After discussing the findings in the framework of the literature, the limitations and the clinical implications of the results and directions for future studies were suggested.

Burton, Karen. "Parent Perceptions of Their Involvement in and the Effectiveness of an Integrated Social Skills Program." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2015. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/4406.

Full text
Abstract:
Social and emotional learning is an important element in educating the whole child. When social skills are taught and reinforced in a school-wide model, which incorporates positive behavior support, both students and faculty experience a better learning environment. The Book in a Bag intervention invites parent volunteers to teach social skills in the classroom. Supplementing this school-wide intervention, parents also receive a monthly newsletter informing them of the identified social skill and recommending associated children's picture books, which further reinforce the skill. The purpose of this study was to determine parent perceptions on the effectiveness of the Book in a Bag program, which was implemented in the target school. Questionnaires (N=327, 47.74% participation rate) were completed by parents who responded to questions about their perceptions of the program's influence on their children's behavior, the importance of parent involvement in the program, and the importance of the school-wide social skills program. Parents expressed an overall positive response to the school-wide social skills program. In addition to reporting and describing data, observations of the questionnaire's weaknesses and strengths are discussed. Future research possibilities and recommendations to further strengthen parent involvement in school-wide social skills programs are offered.

Abstract:
This thesis studied four CEMUS courses offered in spring 2011. The purpose of this study was: 1) to measure CEMUS students‘ self-reported behavior and action as well as behavior intention towards sustainable development; 2) to analyze different factors and barriers to their behavior and action; 3) to analyze course coordinators‘ knowledge and perspectives about behavior change and action towards sustainable development; and 4) to analyze each course‘s impact on students. Finally, this thesis discusses how education can be improved to foster behavior and action towards sustainable development. This study used both qualitative and quantitative methods. According to the results, most CEMUS students were willing to recycle; to switch off electricity when it‘s not needed; and to travel by bicycle or public transportation instead of by car. On the other hand, fewer students had a willingness to pay for environmental costs and to cut down water consumption and waste. Among the opportunities for indirect action, it was political participation and working within the field of sustainable development (SD) that were most preferred. In contrast, much fewer students were willing to avoid purchasing products from companies with poor track records on CSR, to participate in voluntary work related to SD and to donate money for social or environmental causes. The two most frequently perceived constraints for behavior change among students were a lack of money and obstructive social norms. As a course outcome, four out of six coordinators expect students to take action afterwards but there is a lack of knowledge on how to encourage students to behave and act more sustainably. Based on the results, this thesis discussed what kinds of learning methods can be applied in CEMUS and ESD. It was concluded that education should focus on a specific domain and a small spatial scale, and assign project assignments in which students communicate and interact with stakeholders. Such an approach will help to approach the goals of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD). CEMUS could also implement the theory of locus of control, emotional involvement and four different kinds of knowledge in their education in order to improve the effectiveness of CEMUS courses when it comes to promoting behavior and action towards sustainable development.

Mogaji, Emmanuel. "Emotional appeals in UK banks' print advertisement." Thesis, University of Bedfordshire, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10547/622103.

Full text
Abstract:
The unprecedented turbulence and uncertainty experienced in global economic and financial markets because of the 'credit crunch' has had a damaging impact on consumer confidence. Trust and credibility have been eroded as many customers feel let down by the banks suggesting the need for banks to rebuild constructive dialogue and long-term, meaningful relationships with their customers again. Though financial service, in this case, is considered a utilitarian service, based on the fact that money is needed to support people‘s daily activities, the present state of financial service has suggested the need for banks to appeal to consumers‘ emotions with the aim of improving their reputation. Also, the competition within the industry also could suggest the need to adopt an emotionally appealing advertisement strategy as emotions are known to play an influential role in building robust brand preference. This study builds on the communication theory, meaning transfer theory and consumer involvement theory, to understand the messages the banks are sending out and to elicit consumers‘ emotional reaction. One thousand, two hundred and seventy-four UK bank advertisements in nine national newspapers were content-analysed to identify the emotional appeals presented by the banks. The perception of these appeals and their associated meanings were sought through semi-structured interviews with 33 participants in London and Luton. The results of the analysis indicated that UK Banks are utilising emotional appeal in their advertisements to reach out to the consumers to convince them to upgrade their account, to open an additional account or switch their account. The most predominantly used appeals were relief and relaxation followed by excitement and happiness or satisfaction with the bank, and finally, security and adventure. However, variations were found in different financial products that employed emotional appeals. It was found that high-involvement products such as mortgages and loans used fewer emotional appeals. Both bank groups - high street banks, including the big four (Barclays, HSBC, Lloyds and RBS) and non-high street banks, such as the new entrants, supermarket brands, and online banks were using emotional appeals. However, it is acknowledged that the communication strategies between these banks could be different as the non-high street banks are more likely to repeat and publish the same messages across many newspapers, instead of publishing different emotionally appealing advertisements. Though consumers acknowledged these emotional appeals in the advertisements, they were more concerned about their relationship with the banks as they don‘t rely on advertisements to make a financial decision. Rather, recommendations from families, friends and associates and also branch location are more important when deciding on which bank to choose. The lack of congruency between financial services and emotional appeals in advertisements is also observed as customers are more likely to be persuaded by rational appeals however this study has not completely ruled out emotional appeals in bank advertisements as the use of both types of appeals is recommended. The study provides important theoretical and managerial contributions to understanding how the consumers understand meaning-embedded advertisements produced by the banks. Managers will be able to consider the implications of advertisements in enhancing their brand equity and building relationships with customers in anticipation that, by word of the mouth and established relationship, their bank‘s reputation will be enhanced. Limitations of the study and opportunities for future research are identified.

Spragg, Joanna. "Parental involvement in Primary School interventions to support children's mental health and emotional well-being : a systematic review of the literature and exploration of StoryLinks." Thesis, University of Southampton, 2017. https://eprints.soton.ac.uk/417279/.

Full text
Abstract:
There is considerable emphasis in research literature and educational policy on the importance of parental involvement in supporting children’s academic and social outcomes. Much of this is based on correlational, rather than experimental evidence. Also, the focus has been on children’s academic outcomes and attainment, as opposed to emotional and social outcomes. A systematic review of existing literature was conducted to evaluate recent empirical studies of school-based interventions that actively involve parents in supporting and promoting children’s mental health and emotional well-being. It aimed to describe the characteristics of such interventions and to consider whether there is research evidence supporting the ‘added value’ of these. Results suggested the interventions promoted a range of positive outcomes related to children’s mental health and emotional well-being. However, further work is needed to understand to what extent positive outcomes are related to the specific approaches and methods used, especially as there is much variation in the types of interventions used. Currently there is little robust empirical evidence for the additional benefits of actively involving parents in interventions to support children’s emotional well-being. Also, further research needs to be undertaken that seeks to consult with the parents, children and professionals facilitating these complex interventions to better understand potential barriers and facilitating factors of parental involvement in school-based programmes. The empirical paper aimed to explore the experiences and views of parents, children and facilitators who have been involved in the StoryLinks intervention. StoryLinks is an individualised, parent-partnership intervention that involves children, parents and school in the co-creation of stories to support children’s emotional well-being and literacy skills (Waters, 2010). StoryLinks is based on the principles of therapeutic storywriting and attachment theory, including the use of metaphor to explore feelings and story-making as a way of supporting relationships. There is some preliminary evidence that the intervention may have a positive effect on children’s emotional and social well-being, behaviour and rates of exclusion, as well as the parent-child relationship (Water, 2014). The current exploratory study drew on the multiple perspectives of parents, children and facilitators who have been involved in the intervention. The research aimed to gain a better understanding of their experiences of the implementation, process and outcomes of StoryLinks. Semi-structured interviews with eight participants (four facilitators and two parentchild dyads) were conducted and thematic analysis was applied to the transcripts. The findings for each group were analysed and presented separately. There were some commonalities between groups, suggesting that participants had mostly had a positive experience of StoryLinks and considered it to be a collaborative intervention. Outcomes identified by participants included that StoryLinks had supported relationships and adults felt they had developed greater insights into their child’s emotions and behaviour. Findings were discussed in the context of relevant literature and research related to therapeutic storywriting approaches and parental involvement in interventions. Consideration was also given to implications for future practice and research.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Differentiating characteristics of the Intensive Care Units and the medical severity of the patient in this context could contribute to become the admission to these units in a very stressful and disruptive experience for those involved. Within this framework, the thesis focuses on the analysis of the psychological distress of ICU patients and families, assessing the possible modulatory role of different factors in such distress. In this sense, our objective would be to improve the welfare and the quality of life of people who, for various reasons, suffer the impact of this experience being patient or relative in an ICU.

Abstract:
From a corporate sustainability performance lens, the purpose of this thesis is to investigate the implications of family involvement in the understanding and use of sustainable performance measures in SMEs with an emphasis in Portuguese family firms. First, a bibliometric study has been used to map the relevant knowledge network on sustainability performance measures and measurement field, retrieving 1271 articles from 1987 to 2015. Second, a bibliometric and abstract lexical analysis were used on 63 SMEs. Corporate sustainability performance studies showed specificities of core theoretical knowledge and the greater operational SMEs focus. Third, using matched paired methodology and multivariate approach, we focus 65 Portuguese SMEs from 2012 and 2016. The main findings show a consistent pattern that corporate family involvement influence financial performance but have a mixed effect on environmental and social performance. It was also be provide evidence of positive link between social and financial performance. Fourth, a case study of a sustainable oriented family owned SME shows that a restricted socioemotional view is dominant in top managers discourses and in their managerial actions, privileging primary stakeholders engagement. Finally, it was provided evidence of positive link between environmental and financial performance in a dual managed context

Abstract:
Learning often gives the impression of being a long and difficult process, especially when it reminds us of school and the difficulty that everyone has already experienced in maintaining motivation for a particular subject. Yet there are things we learn without teaching. For example, learning to speak one’s mother tongue is a natural process without conscious effort. Primary and secondary knowledge is a way of distinguishing what is easy or difficult to learn. Primary knowledge is the knowledge for which our cognitive mechanisms have evolved, allowing effortless, intuitive and rapid acquisition, whereas secondary knowledge has recently emerged: it is the knowledge for which we would not have had time to evolve and for which acquisition would be long and costly. Schools focus mainly on this second type of knowledge. Their challenge is to enable this lengthy and costly learning, and to do so, to maintain the motivation of learners. A research path is based on the fact that secondary knowledge is built on the basis of primary knowledge. Indeed, no one is able to teach a mother tongue “initially”, whereas foreign language learning is based on that first language. This work explores the motivational and inexpensive nature of primary knowledge to facilitate the learning of logic as secondary knowledge. By varying the content of logical problems with primary (e.g., food and animals’ features) or secondary knowledge (e.g., grammar rules, mathematics), the first eight experiments highlighted the positive effects of primary knowledge, whether or not the content was familiar. The results showed that primary knowledge promoted performance, emotional investment, confidence in responses and decreased perceived cognitive load. Secondary knowledge seemed to undermine participants’ motivation and generated a feeling of parasitic conflict. In addition, presenting primary knowledge content first reduced the deleterious effects of secondary knowledge presented second and would have an overall positive impact. Three other experiments then tested these results on learning tasks in order to propose an approach that fosters learners’ engagement and learning. These findings tend to show that research about learning would benefit from taking primary knowledge into account rather than neglecting it because it is “already learned”

Abstract:

This dissertation deals with Swedish upper secondary school students’ encounter and reception of various fictional texts in and outside of school. The focus of the study is how literary instruction, based on an expanded text concept, succeeds in meeting the students’ expectations and previous experiences of fictional texts. The theoretical framework consists of theories that approach reading as a transaction between text and reader in a social and cultural context.

The study is founded on qualitative methods, and the empirical material was collected through participant observation and interviews with students and teachers in four upper secondary school classes between 2001 and 2003. The research questions are: How does literary instruction develop students’ knowledge of fictional texts and reading? In what ways are the students’ textual worlds in and outside of school dialogically interrelated? How do students use different fictional texts in building their identities? Which values regarding different texts are visible in the classroom?

Findings indicate that mismatches between teachers’ and students’ literary repertoires are common in upper secondary school literary teaching. Since the literary instruction mainly drew upon traditional fiction, the students’ construction of literary worlds was not sufficiently supported. The students’ expectations of fiction reading were characterized by strong emotional involvement, and this was particularly true for the male students. The female students reported that there was a lack of female perspectives in the literary teaching.

The pedagogical implications of the study concern the importance of identifying the students’ literary repertoires and matching those with the literary instruction. Literary pedagogy should aim to expand these repertoires, and to help students acquire new reader roles. One way of achieving this is to promote dialogical teaching that encourages both efferent and aesthetic reading. Findings of the present study also indicate that teachers’ resources for working with an expanded text concept are limited. Consequently, current teacher education programmes and further training of working teachers must deal with reading of fictional texts from new and broader perspectives.

Abstract:
Increasingly, celebrities appear not only as endorsers for products but are apparently engaged in entrepreneurial roles as initiators, owners and perhaps even managers in the ventures that market the products they promote. Despite being extensively referred to in popular media, scholars have been slow to recognise the importance of this new phenomenon. This thesis argues theoretically and shows empirically that celebrity entrepreneurs are more effective communicators than typical celebrity endorsers because of their increased engagement with ventures. I theorise that greater engagement increases the celebrity‘s emotional involvement as perceived by consumers. This is an endorser quality thus far neglected in the marketing communications literature. In turn, emotional involvement, much like the empirically established dimensions trustworthiness, expertise and attractiveness, should affect traditional outcome variables such as attitude towards the advertisement and brand. On the downside, increases in celebrity engagement may lead to relatively stronger and worsening changes in attitudes towards the brand if and when negative information about the celebrity is revealed. A series of eight experiments was conducted on 781 Swedish and Baltic students and 151 Swedish retirees. Though there were nuanced differences and additional complexities in each experiment, participants‘ reactions to advertisements containing a celebrity portrayed as a typical endorser or entrepreneur were recorded. The overall results of these experiments suggest that emotional involvement can be successfully operationalised as distinct from variables previously known to influence communication effectiveness. In addition, emotional involvement has positive effects on attitudes toward the advertisement and brand that are as strong as the predictors traditionally applied in the marketing communications literature. Moreover, the celebrity entrepreneur condition in the experimental manipulation consistently led to an increase in emotional involvement and to a lesser extent trustworthiness, but not expertise and attractiveness. Finally, negative celebrity information led to a change in participants‘ attitudes towards the brand which were more strongly negative for celebrity entrepreneurs than celebrity endorsers. In addition, the effect of negative celebrity information on a company‘s brand is worse when they support the celebrity rather than fire them. However, this effect did not appear to interact with the celebrity‘s purported engagement.

As Military Police is known as “Model of the Three Armed Forces,” their words and behavior represents the image of the whole military force in the mind of the common people. The military policemen not only have to pay a physical labor, but also have to repress any of their real emotional expression and personal features in the course of their duty. The emotional feelings are regulated by the relevant provisions of the unit, in order to create a good military discipline and a favorable image of the national army. Through that way, military policemen can maintain a friendly interactive relationship with colleagues, friends and the common people. Such emotional expression must follow the norms of emotional made by the unit, which takes the emotion the organization expected as one item of the work content, that is, the work feature of “emotional labor”. Based on this, military policemen are prone to suffer from "emotional exhaustion", if they cannot well adapt to working in the emotional labor environment and cannot be successfully make self-adjustment in the long term. And the conflicts caused by the inner emotions and organizational emotion norms will cause negative effect for the body and mind of individuals, and even the units. The long-term emotional exhaustion and over-heavy load of emotional labor will result in the decrease of "Job Involvement " of the military policemen. Therefore, this study took military policemen, petty officers, soldiers and hiring staff in the northern region as objects for the study. It applied a questionnaire survey methodology, with a total of 350 questionnaires, 323 reclaimed, 301 valid, to analysis military policemen’s feelings of emotional labor degree and emotional exhaustion situation by using SPSS 17.0 statistical software. As the world changes, the dependence of people on the Internet is becoming stronger. According to Hsu et al. (2012), “Flow experience has a positive significant impact on internet shopping behavior.” Furthermore, it significantly impacts brand marketing. This study took the world-famous brand Disney and utilized an online questionnaire sent to participants living in Taiwan (via official websites and the Disney Channel) and the United States (via official websites, retail stores, and Disneyland theme parks). This study aims to determine the difference in sentiment toward Disney between people who live in Taiwan and those who live in the United States. Results were obtained from analysis of the 440 responses. The results revealed that brand involvement has a positive impact on flow experience across three dimensions: skill, challenge, and play. After adding in the mediator emotional brand attachment, it was determined that brand involvement has a positive impact on skill and play through both dimensions and that brand involvement can influence challenge. The relationships between brand involvement, emotional brand attachment, and flow experience vary depending on where the consumer resides.

Background: Significant changes during prenatal and postpartum periods may affect maternal physical, mental and psychosocial health. Postnatal emotional difficulties, including depression and anxiety, are frequently observed. In Taiwan, no matter women are employed or not, childcare duties are mainly taken by mothers. Recently, more and more studies have emphasized the importance of paternal involvement (i.e., fathers are encouraged to engage in child caring work and offer instrumental support to the mothers) during perinatal periods. Paternal involvement may be positive to children’s growth and development and to the marital relationship as well. Although low paternal involvement was identified as a potentially detrimental factor, more studies are in need to further estimate the effects of paternal involvement on maternal postpartum depression and anxiety, together with the role of maternal job status in this association. Objectives: This study was aimed at investigating (1) the current picture of paternal involvement at 6 months postpartum in Taipei and New Taipei City; (2) the prevalence of maternal depression and anxiety at 6 months postpartum in Taipei and New Taipei City; (3) the association between paternal involvement and maternal postnatal depression and anxiety at 6 months postpartum; and (4) the potential modifying effects of maternal job status in the association between paternal involvement and maternal postnatal depression and anxiety. Method: Women prior to 16 gestational weeks and their partners attending the prenatal visits from July 2011 to June 2013 in four selected hospitals in Taipei City and New Taipei City were invited for participation. A total of 425 pairs of parents completed the first interview and responded the follow-up questionnaire at 6 months postpartum. Self-reported data were collected by instruments of the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS), the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory scale (STAI-S) and the paternal involvement scale. Binary and multinomial logistic regression models were performed for analyses. Result: We found that fathers spent an average of 34.28 hours a week with their child. When mothers were away, an average of 12.95 hours a week was reported. The frequencies of paternal engagement in childcare work ranged from once a day to several times a week, while those of father-child interaction ranged from several times a week to several times a month. The prevalences of maternal postnatal depression and anxiety were estimated as 21.24% and 40.77%, respectively. In binary and multinomial logistic regression analyses, compared to higher level of paternal involvement, lower level of involvement was independently associated with increased risks of maternal postpartum depression (adjusted OR=2.33, 95%CI=1.23-4.42). If both depression and anxiety were considered, lower level of paternal involvement significantly increased the risks of maternal comorbid depression and anxiety (adjusted OR=2.35, 95%CI=1.09-5.05). For mothers without jobs, the impact of lower paternal involvement on maternal emotional difficulties was even more salient, while for employed mothers, findings did not reach the statistically significant level. Conclusion: High prevalences of maternal postpartum emotional difficulties deserve continued consideration. We suggest the need of screening perinatal depression and anxiety during routine obstetric examination to help gynecologists promptly evaluate maternal emotional status. For public health and psychological professionals, continued physical and mental care together with appropriate health education should be provided. Especially for unemployed mothers, the considerable effects of higher paternal involvement on childcare arrangements to help ameliorate maternal emotional difficulties should be emphasized. Future longitudinal studies with larger sample size are in need to further clarify the relationships between paternal involvement and maternal emotional status. Findings could also be extended to longer-term impact on children’s preschool years.

Based on the viewpoint of conservation of resources theory, this study examines the relationship between the emotional labor, emotional exhaustion, and job satisfaction. A moderator of perceived supervisor support is also proposed in this study. Fulltime workers were selected as the target sample and 294 usable questionnaires were returned. The results showed that:1. Higher level of emotional labor (surface and deep acting) is likely to increase higher level of emotional exhaustion. 2. Perceived supervisor support moderated the relationship between emotional labor and emotional exhaustion. 3. Higher level of emotional exhaustion is likely to decrease lower level of job satisfaction. 4. Higher level of emotional exhaustion is likely to decrease lower level of occupational commitment. 5. Emotional exhaustion had a fully mediating effect on the relationship between emotional labor and satisfaction. Finally, this study discussed both theoretical and managerial implications.

The relation between emotional labor and outcomes has generally been researched, but few studies attempted to investigate the antecedent variables of emotional labor. Besides, most studies tended to emphasize on either personal characteristics or situational effect and excluded the interaction between person and environment, and no quantitative researches had been discussed how organizational factors affected employees’ well-being. Hence, the purpose of this study was not only to prove if the interaction between perceived organizational support and emotional labor affects emotional exhaustion, but also to research if the degree of job involvement moderates the relationship of the encounter with difficult customers and emotional labor. Questionnaire was used to collect data from two hundred and sixty-three first-line employees and their supervisors in the service industry. First, the result of this study indicated that more surface acting and less deep acting would be used by employees when they encountered with difficult customers more frequently. Second, deep acting negatively correlated with the level of emotional exhaustion. Furthermore, the degree of job involvement did moderate the relationship between the encounter with difficult customers and the frequency of using deep acting. In the end, implications for management practice and suggestions for further research were proposed.

In the past, we usually passively received information from newspapers and magazines, but now, it has been transferred to the Internet, using the interactive communication patterns. This change makes the links between people and produces word of mouth. How to effectively deliver the message to consumers has become an important issue to advertisers. Word of mouth plays a role which is the node between messages. Moreover, each person produces different dynamics influence bases on different occasions, different cognitive preferences and consumer groups, and it also gives positive or negative communication. The most direct way to communicate is emotions which would change by external stimuli and advertisings are one of the best ways to cause emotions. If the product forms the diffusion, advertising is a good way to drive sentiment. In addition, the emotional arousal will stir up the speed of messages. When we are in high emotional arousal, it will increase the actions related behavior and make advertisings easier to be passed on. Because of emotional arousal, word of mouth is produced and products are spread out. In this thesis, I design 2(high / low emotional arousal) X 2 (high / low involvement) experiments to investigate the impacts of emotional arousal and involvement on word of mouth within and outside the social groups. The results showed that, overall, emotional arousal significantly relates to word of mouth and involvement is not produce the main effect to word of mouth. However, emotional arousal and involvement have the interaction to word of mouth within the social group.

Service often is performed by service action blueprint, service providers are like actors and the service process is like a show. In such a “show” performance, service providers' emotion is an important key to interact with customers. Previous studies focus merely on the impact of service provider’s own psychological state and behaviors. There has been limited research on service providers' personal characteristics and work attitude's effects on emotional state and customer's behaviors. Therefore the purpose of this study is to examine moderate effect on service provider’s emotion intelligence, job involvement, and social support in emotion labor and emotion exhaust, service orient organization citizen behavior, and customer behavior intention. The sample is drawn from front-line service providers in Kaohsiung and Pingtung area. To avoid common method variance (CMV), paired survey was commenced. The questionnaire was distributed to the service providers and three to five of their own customers. In total 1323 valid samples were collected. Key research findings are: (1) Emotion labor positively affects emotion exhaust, service orient organization citizen behavior, and customer behavior intention. (2) Emotion intelligence positively moderating the effect between emotion labor and emotion exhaust. (3) Job involvement positively moderating the effect between emotion labor and service orient organization citizen behavior, and customer behavior intention. (4) Different service objects ("people" or "things" as main objects) show significant difference on the moderation effect. Based on the research findings, managerial and research implication are discussed.

This study examines the moderating effects of emotional contagion on the relationship between transformational leadership and subordinate’s job involvement. The emotional contagion contains two constructs—「leader’s ability to infect others」 and 「subordinate’s susceptibility to emotion」. Two studies were conducted. In Study 1, by investigating 210 soldiers came from 8 recruit-training companies of Taiwan Army, a three-way interaction of transformational leadership, leader’s ability to infect others and subordinates' susceptibility to emotion on job involvement was found. For leaders whose ability to infect others is low、no significant interaction effect of transformational leadership and subordinate’s susceptibility on job involvement was found. However, for leaders whose ability to infect others is high, it is found that the positive relationship between transformational leadership and subordinate’s job involvement is stronger for subjects with high emotional susceptibility than those with low emotional susceptibility. In Study 2, by investigating 115 military personnel of regular troops, it is found that the three-way interaction of transformational leadership、leader’s ability to infect others and subordinates' susceptibility to emotion on job involvement was not found. However、a positive relationship between transformational leadership and job involvement was found in Study 2.

Once considered a manufacturing issue, shift work occurs today in many different industries and fields. Those facilities that need people 24 hours a day, require shift workers to keep their operations running. More and more people are working shifts. Shiftwork, causes disruption of biological rhythms and perturbation of the social and family life that can increase the sources of job stress. The aim of this research is to investigate the relationship between Job Stress , Emotional Exhaustion and Job Involvement of shift employees. According to Conservation of Resource Theory, when the individual’s resources is threatened, the individual will be stressful. This research suggested that Job Stress could be regarded as the lack of individual resources and external energy resources, then the individual might be emotional exhausted. If individual had appropriate complement resources, such as resources of personal characteristics- Emotional Intelligence, and individual perceived sense of Emotional Exhaustion will be reduced. This research selected Emotional Intelligence for personality variables. This research was recruited by convenience sampling and questionnaire survey method. Sampling was limited to shift employees in north Taiwan, and 238 valid questionnaires were obtained .The results showed that, Job Stress predicts Job Involvement through Emotional Exhaustion. In addition, Emotional Intelligence moderated the relationship between Job Stress and Emotional Exhaustion. Finally, higher Emotional Intelligence sensed that Job Stress was weakly related to Emotional Exhaustion.

Some past studies suggest that HRM practices will lower employee happiness while others think otherwise. Research shows that when employees recognize that HRM practices are for improving their job performance, they will have a higher job investment with low job exhaustion. HRM attribution theory points out that employees reflect HRM management practices from executing organizational goals. (Nishii et all., 2008) Attribution theory also points out that effectiveness of HRM is decided by employee belief of why they should execute these practices such as performance evaluation. Therefore, this study will explore the effect of HRM performance attributions on emotional exhaustion and the mediating roles of job involvement. Using military congress contact as samples, there are 80 valid questionnaires. Through empirical analysis from questionnaires, this study reveals that 1. α value of variables such as job involvement, and emotional exhaustion are greater than the reliability value of 0.6. 2.Only job involvement and emotional exhaustion have a negative correlation(correlation value of p < 0.01). 3.Job involvement has a negative effect on emotional exhaustion. This shows that the higher job involvement, the lower the emotional exhaustion. This supports H1 hypothesis. And 4.Education level has significant effect on job involvement, and emotional exhaustion.
