Abstract:
Anxiety and depression: Emotion regulation in psychotherapy. There has been an increasing interest in emotions during the past couple of decades, reflected in a rapid growth of the affective sciences. In this article we argue that emotions serve important functions in human life and that adaptive emotion regulation is crucial for mental health. We review some of the central emotion regulation strategies in anxiety disorders and depression and describe how Emotion Regulation Therapy is aimed at targeting emotion dysfunction in so-called distress disorders.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Entertainment, Emotions and Personality Analyzing Preferences for Media Entertainment from a Media Psychological Perspective Entertainment is far more than a simple pastime and anything but a waste of time. On the contrary we are as humans motivated towards entertainment, as entertainment offers distinct qualities crucial for our psychical, psychological and social well-being. By identifying such experiential qualities this paper aims firstly at defining how entertainment regulates emotions as well as constituting our identity. Not all people are however motivated by or are motivated towards the same type of entertainment and the same experiential qualities. Therefore this paper aims secondly at demonstrating how individual differences in motivation to a large degree stem from differences in personality, determining preferences for certain experiential qualities rather than others. This analysis concludes in a psychographic model for segmentation, which is then utilized to describe differences in preferences for entertainment. By including experiential qualities that are relevant to different segments, entertainment programmes may transgress segments and can therefore be seen as segment-breakers.

Abstract:
Emotions and conflicts in adult close relationships: A systematic review of the impact of adult attachment on conflict behavior. How do we deal with negative emotions, and how do they affect conflicts in close relationships? Attachment theory is a suitable framework to describe and understand how adults handle emotions and conflicts in their relationships. This article is based on a systematic literature search identifying recent research, i.e., published from 2000 till 2015, which examines attachment pattern with the Adult Attachment Interview (AAI), and the way couples manage conflicts in their romantic relationships. The review shows that in nine out of ten studies the attachment pattern guides the couples’ behaviour during conflicts in romantic relationships. Insecurely attached couples showed more negative behaviour, such as criticism and rejection, whereas securely attached couples showed a more positive behaviour, such as empathy and openness. Likewise, insecurely attached couples showed less effective caregiving behaviour, whereas securely attached couples responded sensitively and accurately to the needs of their partners. Bearing in mind the small number of included studies, it is seen that there is a tendency for the attachment pattern in adults in their thirties to guide their behavior during conflicts in their relationships. Attachment theory and empirical research on conflict behavior give health professionals insight into emotional processes, and can help answer why some couples become trapped in inappropriate strategies during conflicts. Though there is a noticeable trend, there is a need for further research, due to the small number of studies.

Abstract:
Are emotions like wild galloping horses? Application of Norbert Elias’ concept of emotion to elite sport In an effort to challenge the concept of emotion based on Freud in the figurational thinking of sport, this article argues that the psychology of pleasure in sport is not exhausted by Freud. With a sociological perspective on emotions, this article reconsiders the knowledge that emotions involve both cognitive and affective dimensions. Elias and Dunning say that violent emotions are tabooed and connected with repugnance and shame, and that centralization of power and monopolization of violence in the civilizing process resulted in a refinement of manners, tastes and behavior. Their framework has been fruitful in understanding the roots of aggressive behavior in sport, which I have analyzed in female elite sport.

Abstract:
“THE BLOOD RUSHES”. MELODRAMA AND EMOTIONS IN HERMAN BANG’S “DE FIRE DJÆVLE”Starting from the melodramatic quality of some of Herman Bang’s texts, the article tries to show its specific function through a reading of “De fire Djævle”. Applying some thoughts of current research on affectivity, it links the narrative expressions of strongemotions to contemporary discourses on trauma on the one hand, and energy and entropy on the other. Affects are shown to be unreliable signs of complex or even repressed phenomena;the story therefore advocates scepticism regarding language, which has an analogy in the silence of the four artistes. Their trapeze-act can be read as a poetological signal for the storyitself: dramatic feelings issue from a self-discipline that withholds its repressed motivation.

Abstract:
Mentalization Theory – shortcomings and possibilities. In consultations between physician and patient feelings, and emotions are often in play and are important for establishing understanding, also when not articulated. In studies of doctor-patient communication concepts and theories addressing emotional understanding are rarely included. We present a possible explanation model for understanding emotions and feelings, viz. mentalization theory. We explain the theory and its different dimensions and polarities, including implicit mentalization which is highly important for establishing understanding between patient and professional. We also explain the theoretical foundation which mentalization theory claims to rely on, viz. Theory of Mind. We show that this foundation is insufficient, especially in relation to providing explanation for the main part of the mentalizing process, the implicit, automatic, often non-verbal mentalizing. We claim that a phenomenological basis could support the immediate, interpersonal process of understanding involved in mentalizing. Phenomenological understanding includes the body as an important part of understanding other persons. The body is also included in mentalizing, but this is not accounted for theoretically. Furthermore, phenomenology accounts more adequately for empathy which represents a substantial part of mentalizing, but regarded as an explicit activity. We consider mentalization a psychological theory that is very useful in shedding light on processes of understanding in consultations between physician and patient, and between professional and patient in general. However, the underlying philosophical frame of reference should be reformulated. Mentalizing can be trained and can be studied, but there is a need to apply interactional studies to capture the implicit mentalizing processes.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this study is to investigate the relations between emotion regulation (reappraisal and suppression), discrete emotions and emotional exhaustion among nurses. Design/methodology/approach A cross-sectional design was used with 168 nurses in South Korea. Structural equation modeling and path analysis were conducted for analysis. Findings Reappraisal correlated positively with enjoyment and pride and negatively with anxiety, anger and frustration, whereas suppression correlated negatively with enjoyment and positively with anxiety and frustration. Moreover, reappraisal was negatively associated with emotional exhaustion, whereas suppression was positively associated with it. Enjoyment was negatively related to emotional exhaustion, and anger and frustration were positively related to it. Enjoyment and frustration mediated the relation between emotion regulation and emotional exhaustion. Findings demonstrate the potentially beneficial influences of reappraisal as well as harmful impacts of suppression in the nursing context. Research limitations/implications This paper expands research on nurses’ emotion management by applying Gross’s emotion regulation framework rather than Hochschild’s emotional labor framework. The mediating result suggests that not only nurses but also hospital administrators and nurse managers should pay attention to nurses’ emotional experiences to improve nurses’ well-being and ultimately better nursing practice. This research can provide the basis for developing practical interventions to efficiently regulate nurses’ emotions. Originality/value This is the first study exploring the mediating role of emotions in the link between nurses’ emotion regulation and emotional exhaustion. It contributes to interdisciplinary research by integrating perspectives from psychological emotion and emotion regulation research into the nursing field.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
One of the ways in which the attachment relationships we develop during infancy influence us throughout life is by emotion regulation. Although studies have shown that attachment orientations affect emotional functioning, the effect of attachment dimensions on overall emotional functioning and sociability has still not been investigated. The purpose of the present study was to examine if attachment dimensions predict emotional intelligence (EI) and sociability. The sample consisted of 75 psychology students at Stockholm University who completed the Attachment Style Questionnaire (ASQ; Feeney, Noller & Hanrahan, 1994) and a section of the Understanding Personal Potential (UPP; Sjöberg, 2001) that measures EI with self-report as well as performance measures, and sociability. The current data did not offer conclusive evidence for the impact of attachment on EI, but suggests that secure attachment predicts sociability. The results are discussed in relation to existing theory and a more integrative approach is suggested for future studies.

Abstract:
This dissertation focuses on emotions in mediation with the overall aim to increase knowledge about mediation strategies for dealing with disputants’ emotions, studied through interview methodology. The study illuminates four major themes containing different strategies accompanied by the respondents’ reasoning. The mediator has power and the disputants have power are themes which include strategies that contrast each other. The themes support and clarify, and atmosphere, contain additional strategies for handling disputants’ emotions. The presented strategies are surrounded by both criticism and support within prior research and moreover the study highlights strategies that are not in focus within current research regarding mediation and emotions. The study points out tendencies that can be used to develop, adjust and complement existing theories and models, even though there is a great need for similar studies. In addition, the study puts light on strategies that have good potential to be used by mediators in practice.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to contribute to a deeper understanding of the key aspects of emotion management during the hostage-taking and how managers handled their own and others' emotions through this event. The empirical data consisted of fourteen interviews with leaders in various positions and with separated organizational affiliations in various crisis management organizations. These kinds of organizations are intended to deal with crises that arise in society. The interviews were analyzed using a grounded theory approach. The results showed that when agents in a crisis management organization meet an antagonistic stressor (caused by man) two types of emotional norms are of importance. These two norms were called “emotional ruled system”. They are normally latent embedded in the everyday interactions but in acute, potentially dangerous situations they will be observed by framing the leaders' emotion handling. The first embedded norm could be explained as "focus on task and do not let emotions interfere". The second norm begins to operate simultaneously, and can be summarized as “provide the task force with maximum physical and psychological security”. The emotional ruled system has a long history in organizational culture and is passed on through social processes. The result can be assumed to be characteristic for professionals who handle demanding tasks. It would therefore be interesting to report the study in educational contexts for these professionals.

Abstract:
This is a study of emotions during consumption. The purpose of the study is to investigate which emotions students experience during consumption and how they explain these emotions and their consumption habits. We think that this subject is not studied enough and that it should be highlighted and studied more. By understanding how emotions function and why they occur at different occasions, the readers can get an insight into their own consumption habits. It helps us understand how we are influenced to buy certain things both by other people and by society. Emotions and consumption happen daily and are certainly a relevant subject. We are all involved in it, but most of us are probably not aware of why certain acts of consumption create emotions and vice versa. In our result, it became clear that most of the participants expressed some sort of shame over purchases without really knowing why. Therefore, we think that there is a need for a better understanding of how emotions function during consumption. We have interviewed students from schools and universities, and based on their experiences we have analyzed how they reacted during consumption. The study focuses on the students’ habits of consuming clothes, beauty products and electronics, but also the emotions regarding ecological products, things that are to be discarded and their thoughts about how they feel and react. In the first part of the theoretical framework, the general perspective of our theory is presented, as well as symbolic interactionism and the societal impact. The second part presents sociology of emotions, a more thorough explanation of emotions and how they can occur and why. The last part focuses on the emotions shame and pride. The result shows that the interviewees experience several emotions before, during and after consumption. There is joy and happiness as well as anxiety and bad conscience. We learn how one person becomes happy by shopping, but also what a bad conscience the same person experience during the payment. We see that the influence of other people is great, and we see how the interviewees express their individuality regarding consumption. We observe that it is difficult to separate and interpret emotions. This is discussed and described in the analysis chapter. Emotions are individual, and so are the interpretations of them.

Abstract:
Abstract   The sociological problem of this C-essay is sociology of emotions. This paper deals with experiences of emotions and work environment for people who work in human service organizations, and has been limited to the profession of recreation leader. The purpose of this paper is to examine how emotions affect the recreation leader’s work. For this we used eight qualitative interviews with recreation leaders from different youth recreation centers. What we have found in this study is that recreation leader’s work includes both positive and negative aspects. In the case of positive aspects, we can mention job satisfaction, social support, and freedom at work, and negative aspects of recreation leaders are stress, harassment, threats and violence. Another interesting conclusion of this essay is that gender has an impact on how emotions are handled. It turned out that female recreation leader uses emotions and feelings to a far greater extent than their male colleagues. The reason of this is that women are expected to act humbly and that they are expected to behave in a way where other people's status and satisfaction increases.                                 Keywords: Emotional sociology, recreation leader, youth, emotions at work

Abstract:
The aim of this study was to investigate emotions and emotion regulation of a downsizing in an industrial company. The sample consisted of persons who had experienced a downsizing but have kept the employment, within a same position or being transferred to another one. Data consisted of two focus group interviews, analysed by an inductive thematic analysis. The results have indicated that emotional reactions changed over time as well the emotional regulation did during the different phases. The groups differed in emotional reaction related to the time of decision regarding the retention of employment. One conclusion is that fast and accurate information during the different phases of a downsizing process may lead to more positive emotional reactions, which in consequence may result in a positive experience of the reduction process as a whole. The confidence in management increased across the time, due to its decisiveness during the process of downsizing.

Abstract:

Abstract

The aim of this work is to understand, from a perspective of sociology of emotions, how employees within the health care sector experience their working environment and the conditions. By analysing how these experiences shape the interviewees’ perceptions of the quality of their working environment, the dissertation also seeks to arrive at an understanding of what the contributing factors are for their choice to either remain in or leave the organizations in which they are employed.

This study has been conducted as a qualitative interview study. Vocational categories represented in the study are doctors, nurses, assistant nurses, midwives, and physical therapists.

The analysis has employed an abductive approach, in which empirical sensitivity, interpretation, and theory are combined. The interpretative and empirical focus, and the theory used concentrate largely on emotions, and the resulting analysis is, thusly, a contribution within the sociology of emotions.

The empirical analysis is organized in three chapters, describing and analysing three main areas: dissatisfaction with public organisations, social embeddedness, and emotional labour.

In terms of results the dissertation demonstrates that workplaces undergoing repeated changes without strong support from the staff are experienced as bad, while workplaces where the employees feel affirmed and competent are experienced as good. However, it is not working environment and conditions alone that are meaningful for the interviewees, but so is the balance between work and private life, as well as the balance between social relations in and outside of the workplace.

In addition, the emotional culture in workplaces and among colleagues is of crucial importance for the interviewees’ perceptions of their work. It is suggested that this pertains to the fact that health care work constitutes a specific type of emotional labour which, in the dissertation, is described as harbouring work. Hence, more than a matter of working environment and conditions, the interviewees’ experiences depend more upon factors such as the degree of embeddedness in social relationships, the emotional climate in the workplace, and the possibility to form a buffer culture. Moreover, it is these factors that underpin how and why employees choose to remain in or leave their workplaces.

Abstract:
Since emotional competence is an important factor in human communication, it will certainly also improve communication between humans and robots or other machines. Emotional competence is defined by the aspects emotion recognition, emotion representation, emotion regulation and emotional behavior. In this paper we present how these aspects are intergrated into the architecture of the robot head MEXI. MEXI is able to recognize emotions from facial expressions and prosody of natural speech and represents its internal state made up of emotions and drives by according facial expressions, head movements and speech utterances. For its emotions and drives internal and external regulation mechanisms are realized. Furthermore, this internal state and its perceptions, including the emotions recognized at its human counterpart, are used by MEXI to control its actions. Thereby MEXI can react adequately in an emotional communication.

Abstract:
Visual sentiment analysis is attracting more and more attention with the increasing tendency to express emotions through visual contents. Recent algorithms in convolutional neural networks (CNNs) considerably advance the emotion classification, which aims to distinguish differences among emotional categories and assigns a single dominant label to each image. However, the task is inherently ambiguous since an image usually evokes multiple emotions and its annotation varies from person to person. In this work, we address the problem via label distribution learning (LDL) and develop a multi-task deep framework by jointly optimizing both classification and distribution prediction. While the proposed method prefers to the distribution dataset with annotations of different voters, the majority voting scheme is widely adopted as the ground truth in this area, and few dataset has provided multiple affective labels. Hence, we further exploit two weak forms of prior knowledge, which are expressed as similarity information between labels, to generate emotional distribution for each category. The experiments conducted on both distribution datasets, i.e., Emotion6, Flickr_LDL, Twitter_LDL, and the largest single emotion dataset, i.e., Flickr and Instagram, demonstrate the proposed method outperforms the state-of-the-art approaches.

Emotional contagion has been a focus problem in the current fields of psychology and organizational behavior. Based on the theoretical analysis of the emotional contagion mechanisms and probabilistic theory, a cellular automaton (CA) model has been proposed to simulate the process of emotional contagion. And with the help of this CA model, we study the gross features of employees’ positive emotions in the evolution of emotional contagion and explore the effects of employees’ ability to transport emotion susceptibility and intimacy on the reaction process. The results indicate that employees’ ability to transport positive emotion susceptibility and intimacy are positive related to the emotional contagion between employees.

Abstract:
Emotion analysis of on-line user generated textual content is important for natural language processing and social media analytics tasks. Most of previous emotion analysis approaches focus on identifying users’ emotional states from text by classifying emotions into one of the finite categories, e.g., joy, surprise, anger and fear. However, there exists ambiguity characteristic for the emotion analysis, since a single sentence can evoke multiple emotions with different intensities. To address this problem, we introduce emotion distribution learning and propose a multi-task convolutional neural network for text emotion analysis. The end-to-end framework optimizes the distribution prediction and classification tasks simultaneously, which is able to learn robust representations for the distribution dataset with annotations of different voters. While most work adopt the majority voting scheme for the ground truth labeling, we also propose a lexiconbased strategy to generate distributions from a single label, which provides prior information for the emotion classification. Experiments conducted on five public text datasets (i.e., SemEval, Fairy Tales, ISEAR, TEC, CBET) demonstrate that our proposed method performs favorably against the state-of-the-art approaches.

Abstract:
The measurement and understanding of user emotions elicited by product appearance are critical elements of the product development process and have been interesting design challenges for many years. This paper proposes an original emotion measurement method, called Auditory Parameter Method. It is a non-verbal technique, which uses sounds and association tests for evaluating a set of products (given by their pictures). It provides an assessment of these products according to a series of emotional dimensions. We present a methodological framework to build the links between user’s emotional responses and geometrical features of product, by using a glasses frame 3D model as application case. Analysis of Variance techniques are employed to examine how various shape factors influence users’ emotional responses to 3D model. To demonstrate the effectiveness of our protocol, we compare the proposed method with the conventional Semantic Differential using Principal Component Analysis and Generalized Procrustes Analysis. The new protocol demonstrates interesting qualities to collect the intuitive emotions of user.

Abstract:
An important aspect of artifact/product design is defining the aesthetic and emotional value. The success of a product is not only dependent on it’s functionality but also on the emotional value that it creates to its user. However, if several designers are faced with a task to create an object that would evoke a certain emotion (aggressive, soft, heavy, friendly, etc.) each would most likely interpret the emotion with a different set of geometric features and shapes. In this paper the authors propose an approach to formalize the relationship between geometric information of a 3D object and the intended emotion using fuzzy logic. To achieve this; 3D objects (shapes) created by design engineering students to match a set of words/emotions were analyzed. The authors identified geometric information as inputs of the fuzzy model and developed a set of fuzzy if/then rules to map the relationships between the fuzzy sets on each input premise and the output premise. In our case the output premise of the fuzzy logic model is the level of belonging to the design context (emotion). An evaluation of how users perceived the shapes was conducted to validate the fuzzy logic model and showed a high correlation between the fuzzy logic model and user perception.

Generating emotional responses is crucial for building human-like dialogue systems. However, existing studies have focused only on generating responses by controlling the agents' emotions, while the feelings of the users, which are the ultimate concern of a dialogue system, have been neglected. In this paper, we propose a novel variational model named EmoElicitor to generate appropriate responses that can elicit user's specific emotion. We incorporate the next-round utterance after the response into the posterior network to enrich the context, and we decompose single latent variable into several sequential ones to guide response generation with the help of a pre-trained language model. Extensive experiments conducted on real-world dataset show that EmoElicitor not only performs better than the baselines in term of diversity and semantic similarity, but also can elicit emotion with higher accuracy.

Abstract:
Abstract Technology is transforming the way engineering designers work and interact with others; Synchronous collaborative computer-aided design (CAD) tools allow designers to manipulate the same model at the same time. We present a new method using automated facial emotion detection software and cursor tracking to map designer emotions and corresponding designer activities in synchronous collaborative CAD. We present findings from a dataset of 9 participants that were assigned to two distinct working styles in the same synchronous CAD environment: single participants working by themselves and paired participants working together. In general, our results show that designers working in the paired workflow exhibited more emotion compared to designers who worked alone. A frequency analysis was performed by linking occurrences of each emotional response to their antecedent activities, revealing that user emotions were predictable to some degree by specific antecedent activities of CAD work. We concluded that activities happening in the graphics area were the most frequent antecedent events of emotions for single-users, while for paired participants, activities in the chat section and feature menu were the most frequent antecedent events for joy and fear, respectively. Finally, logistic regression was applied for each combination of event and emotion for each participant in order to further investigate the relationships between the user activities and emotions, and meta-regression was used to aggregate the regression results for the two different working styles. In particular, for single-users, activities in the model tree were found to be positively correlated to joy and negatively correlated to disgust, and navigating the feature menu increased the likelihood of contempt. For participants in pairs, communicating with CAD partner and receiving communications from partner was associated with joy, navigating the feature menu was associated with sadness, anger and disgust were associated with partner’s action in the model tree, and contempt corresponded to the designer’s own activities in the model tree area. The approach and conclusions presented in this paper allow us to better understand designer emotions in fully synchronous CAD, which leads to insight related to designer satisfaction, creativity, performance and other outcomes valued by engineering designers in a virtual collaborative environment.

Abstract:
This article addresses the problem of identifying relationship between the emotional manifestations of adolescents and young people and dominant values in their personality system in order to establish priorities in the acquisition of the components of the value orientation at the subjects. The age of adolescence is the period of social and emotional development, cognitive and emotional explosion, and psychic and value system formation. Personality formation takes place in the social environment through interrelation with parents, friends, and teachers in different life situations. Adolescents may experience positive and negative emotions of varying intensity. Emotional stability develops gradually through experiences, socialization, cognitive progress, self-knowledge and self-affirmation which are already being formed and are specific to young people. It is important to self-recognize and self-analyse by the subject of his/her own specific emotions, to determine the causes of their occurrence, to know how to regulate the negative ones. The role of emotions is enormous for the human being. The affective sphere is one of fundamental elements for: the fixation of externalized manifestations through the behavioural display of suitable emotions, shaping of attitudes, the development of beliefs and, therefore, values. These components are organized hierarchically, forming the content of value orientation or values orientation. The experimental study carried out with adolescent and young subjects consisted in determining the specificity of emotions and dominant values in adolescence and youth ages, highlighting the dynamics of emotional and value changes, and establishing the relationship between the studied variables. The experiment results provide us with the current information regarding dynamics of the relationship of emotions and values, which, therefore, allows to elaborate new ways of emotions knowing and regulating during adolescence age including youth one. These strategies can be applicable in educational institutions, ensuring by them well-being for all education actors. Well-being means not only feeling well inside, but also to be in well- being created conditions in the environment around us, favouring the wellbeing of all subjects.

Abstract:
In this work we proposed a computational model to extract pedestrian characteristics from video sequences. The proposed model considers a series of characteristics of the pedestrians and the crowd, such as number and size of groups, distances, speeds, among others, and performs the mapping of these characteristics in personalities, emotions and cultural aspects, considering the Cultural Dimensions of Hofstede (HCD), the Big-Five Personality Model (OCEAN) and the OCC Emotional Model. The main hypothesis is that there is a relationship between so-called intrinsic human variables (such as emotion) and the way people behave in space and time. As one of the main contributions, four large dimensions of geometric characteristics (Big4GD) were proposed: I - Physical, II - Personal and Emotional, III - Social and IV - Cultural, which seek to describe the behavior of pedestrians and groups in the crowd. The GeoMind tool was developed for the purpose of detecting the four geometric dimensions from video sequences. In addition, several analyzes were carried out with the purpose of validating the proposed model, from comparing results with the literature, including the comparison of spontaneous multitudes from several countries and controlled experiments involving Fundamental Diagrams.

Abstract:
Studies have indicated that emotions can significantly be influenced by environmental factors; these factors can also significantly influence drivers’ emotional state and, accordingly, their driving behavior. Furthermore, as the demand for autonomous vehicles is expected to significantly increase within the next decade, a proper understanding of drivers’/passengers’ emotions, behavior, and preferences will be needed in order to create an acceptable level of trust with humans. This paper proposes a novel semi-automated approach for understanding the effect of environmental factors on drivers’ emotions and behavioral changes through a naturalistic driving study. This setup includes a frontal road and facial camera, a smart watch for tracking physiological measurements, and a Controller Area Network (CAN) serial data logger. The results suggest that the driver’s affect is highly influenced by the type of road and the weather conditions, which have the potential to change driving behaviors. For instance, when the research defines emotional metrics as valence and engagement, results reveal there exist significant differences between human emotion in different weather conditions and road types. Participants’ engagement was higher in rainy and clear weather compared to cloudy weather. More-over, engagement was higher on city streets and highways compared to one-lane roads and two-lane highways.
