Abstract:
Safety of Artemisia afar has been a controversial issue due to its high thujone content. Despite the declaration of the World Health Organization in the 1970s of the plant being unsafe for consumption, it is still commonly used in folklore medication in South Africa, especially in winter. Essential oils were isolated by hydrodistillation from the twigs of A. afra plants from different locations in the Eastern Cape, Free State and KwaZulu-Natal. Analyses of the oils by GC and GCMS revealed compositional variations in the levels of α-and β-thujone, 1,8-cineole and camphor. α-Thujone was the majo

Previous research revealed that Small, Medium and Micro Enterprises (SMMEs) have been struggling to grow including in rural and remote areas. However, there is little empirical research into how SMMEs promote themselves. To date is not clear about what marketing intelligence and marketing promotional communications they use. The survey intends looking to make contribution in closing research gap by seeking to understand the marketing intelligence and marketing promotional communications tools used by rural SMMEs and to what extent they used these tools and what are the limitations they have. Objective. To investigate the incidence of anterior knee pain, as well as the effect of sport participation, age of onset and gender differences on the condition. Design. Questionnaires (N = 2 414), each containing 20 questions, were distributed to 10 - 17-year-old learners at 8 primary and 5 high schools in the Empangeni/Richards Bay area. The return rate was 76%. Results. Twenty-seven per cent of the respondents reported anterior knee pain. Of these, 21% experienced pain in the left knee only, 34% in the right knee only, and 45% in both knees. Purpose In low- and middle-income, HIV-endemic regions of sub-Saharan Africa, morbidity and mortality from the common epithelial cancers of the developed world are rising. Even among HIV-infected individuals, access to antiretroviral therapy has enhanced life expectancy, shifting the distribution of cancer diagnoses toward non–AIDS-defining malignancies, including breast cancer. Building on our prior research, we recently initiated the South African Breast Cancer and HIV Outcomes study. Methods We will recruit a cohort of 3,000 women newly diagnosed with breast cancer at hospitals in high (ave

Abstract:
Detection of damage in concrete gravity dams (CGDs) is one of the challenges that need to be overcome since dam failure may lead to irreversible consequences. This research aims to detect structural damage within CGDs by wavelet analysis. From a structural point of view, stiffness is an important factor in the dynamic behaviour of concrete gravity dam systems. Any sudden change in the stiffness leads to alteration in the dynamic response of the structures. The proposed analysis of such a condition will help to investigate the responses before and after the occurrence of any structural damage.
