Louali-Raynal, Naïma. "L'emphase en berbere : etude phonetique, phonologique et comparative." Lyon 2, 1990. http://www.theses.fr/1990LYO20022.
Full textThis work is essentially about a fundamental element of berber phonology : the correlation of emphasis ; the sound (consonants and vowels) systems are studied. The phonological description is based on many varities of the language : the ones from morocco, algeria, libya, niger and mali. It has been shown, through the analysis of cineradiographic data on the berber from aderj (morocco), that the emphatic element is defined -at the articulatory level- as resulting from pharyngealization. The analysis of acoustic data on the berber varieties of aderj (morocco), zuara (libya) and abalagh (niger) shows that the lowering of the second formant and the highly decreased transition, constitute the acoustic correlate of the pha- ryngealized realizations. The elavoration of comparative series has enabled us to reconstruct: 1) three proto-segments for the emphatic consonant sounds : *tt, *d, and *z ; 2) four proto-segments for the vowels : *i, *e, *a, *u

Full textThis thesis is dedicated to the analysis of the vocalic system of the interlanguageof Moroccan students of Italian (FL). The aim of this work is to determine whichis the language that has the biggest influence on the pronunciation of Italianvowels: Arabic (NL) or French (L2).The empirical part of this research took place in the faculty of Ain Chock-Casablanca, during the academic year 2012-2013. The informants, on whose datathe research is based, were been recorded while reading a list of sentences whichcontains minimal pairs. In order to verify the correct pronunciation we used acontrol group of Italian natives (recorded at the University of Turin). All the oraldata were treated with PRAAT and analyzed in an electronic document (LFSAG).For visualization of the vowel spaces we opted for the measurement of the firstand the second formants and their display in F1-F2 diagrams. After analyzing the different errors of pronunciation of the Italian vowels wenoticed that they are attributable to phonological difficulties due to vocalicexchange of the phonemes /e/ with /i/ and /o/ with /u/ and vice-versa. Additionallythe results show that the interference of the French language less than expected, and only occurs when there are two words with the same graphical aspect. Arabic,on the other hand, as the mother tongue of all the informants, is the languagewhich has the most effect on the pronunciation Italian vowels. The analysis of the phonological system of both Moroccan and standard Arabichas revealed that it is characterized by secondary articulation manners which aretraditionally attributed to emphasis, which modifies the timbre of the consonant. The consonant in its turn change that of the adjacent vowel. While the articulationof the Italian vowels is more independent from the consonantal context, thearticulation of the Arabic vowels appears to be dependent on the context sincetheir timbre depends partially on the preceding and following consonants: if theseare emphatic, then the vowel is emphatic ([e], [o]), and if they are not emphatic, then the vowel is non emphatic ([i], [u]).The results obtained in this research confirm that what affects the pronunciation ofthe vowels are the emphatic modes present in Moroccan and standard Arabic. These difficulties can be overcome with specific exercises, which allow thestudents to acquire new articulatory habits in order to reach a good pronunciationof the Italian language

Full textThis work is a study of certain aspects of emphasis in Oriental Moroccan Arabic (hereafter OMA). We shed some light on the notion of emphasis by considering its definition by Arabic grammarians, Orientalists, and studies with experimental evidence. Then we present the inventory of emphatic sounds in OMA which contains what we call fundamental and secondary emphatics. In the physiological study, we investigate whether emphatics in OMA are accompanied by glottalization. Our results show that emphatics are produced with almost identical F0 values, an equally regular signal and the same modal voice quality when compared to non emphatic sounds (which are non-glottalized by definition). The objective of the articulatory study is to explore whether emphatics on OMA have the same principle articulation as the corresponding non emphatic sounds. We show that the consonants are alveolars or dento-alveolars. The emphatic /t/ which is apical is more anterior than the non emphatic /t/ which is laminal. However, /d/ and /d/ are both apicals, and /s/ and /s/ are both laminals. The articulation of /d/ et /s/ is more alveolar, and hence more posterior, as compared to the articulation of their counterparts. At the acoustic level, the amplitude of the burst and the friction confirms the consonants articulation. Emphatic sounds raise F1 and lower F2 values than non emphatic sounds. It is known that this is due to pharyngealization which accompanies the articulation of emphatics. We suggest that for /t/ it is also due to the apical articulation. In our perceptive study, we studied the synthetic vowels /a/, /i/, /u/. F1 values were raised and F2 values were lowered in a step-wise fashion. Our tests show that hearers distinguish between an emphatic realization and a non emphatic one based on the F1 and F2 values for the vowel /i/, on the F2 values for the vowel /a/, and on the F1 values for the vowel /u/. We study emphasis coarticulation in OMA across different domains and based on the measurements of F2. Our results suggest that emphasis spreading takes place in all domains considered (syllable, word, prefix, word-boundary). This coarticulation seems to be more important regressively than progressively, and the degree of emphasis decreases in the case of an intervening palatal and the distance of the affected segment from emphatics

Full textThe aim of this thesis is the study of emphasis. A phonetical and phonological notion which expresses as an articulatory way of some elements characterized inherently by a phonetical property which results in propagation. The study is expressed in two parts with differents fonctions and dimensions, but it forms an unified whole. The first part, unusual approach in phonology, is an historical work presented on the production since century and half to the question of emphasis in different views. We have to trace the history of an exemplary debate of the operation of the scientific argumentation in the different trends expressed to place the several solutions proposed to the probleme discussed before to develop our own theorisation and our way to represent it. What contains the second part which, from the phonological representations ppoint of view, adopts the proposed general model following the recent production in autosegmental phonology

Full textSince 1996 in order to fight inflation, Haiti put in place a monetary policy targeting money supply with inflation target. Inflation high gets started from budget deficit accumulation and monetary financing by seigniorage. This practice of financing by inflationary taxes implies a problem of credibility of monetary policy even with a double monetary circulation and a dollarization of the economy reaching 50% since 2004. The monetary policy implementation aims to avoid inflation bias and different approaches for improving credibility has been considered. The economic crisis started in 2007 created by the instability of the financial markets, forced the establishment of non-conventional monetary policy to avoid the liquidity trap. This crisis has resulted in an accumulation of international reserves and low interest rate in emerging economies and the economies of underdeveloped countries. It became more and more evident that the theoretical basis of the monetary policy strategy remains looking for both, monetary stability and the stability of the financial markets, in order to maintain the credibility and efficiency of the monetary policy of central banks. The misuse made by the FED in the USA of quantitative easing, rise concerns about a crisis of sovereign debt of the Sates, the creation of speculative bubble, and a possible return to the recession. With the case of Haiti, the expectations are not rationales because of forecast errors. A joint analysis of banks interests’ rates using a VECM model has not enabled us to find a long run equilibrium rate between them. The Seo test concluded that chocks affect the dynamic of both rates. The agreements with the IMF allowed improving weakly the monetary policy efficiency with the accumulation of international reserves in the wake of the crisis which started in 2007

Full textTimber framing is a very attractive alternative for the construction of multistory buildings. Thanks to its low ecological footprint, its excellent mechanical properties and the aesthetics of finished product. By adding a thin concerted concrete slab, the thickness and weight of the floors can be considerably reduced while respecting the design criteria. In order to succeed, the load must be transferred from the concrete slab to the timber beam by the shear connectors. Different types of connectors allow this transfer. Nevertheless, it is difficult to guarantee good stiffness in serviceability and ductile behaviour before the collapse of the structure. Ductility is an indicator of the ability of the structure to dissipate energy. In this master thesis, the behaviour of a new cast-in-place composite connector will be discussed. This ultra-high performance fiber-reinforced concrete (UHPFRC) with a steel core ensures stiffness and ductility. The aim of this research is to verify and validate the behaviour of the composite connector by varying the different geometric parameters, namely the diameter and the length. Furthermore, in order to confirm the performance of the new connector, a bending test will be carried out on typical floor beams in comparison with another shear connector. These laboratory tests will also be validated using a simple and complex calculation method to verify the structural behaviour in both Serviceability Limit States (SLS) and Ultimate Limit States (ULS). Finally, this thesis explores the behaviour of a thin slab of UHPFRC connected to a glued laminated timber (GLT) with a long span of 9 m. The TCC beams were designed with a simplified multi-criteria approach. The results confirm the promising potentials, in terms of weight and overall thickness, of using UHPFRC thin slab for future TCC multistory buildings.

Full textThis thesis explores the morphological, syntactic and discursive-based aspects related to the phenomenon of verb form alternation present in Mauritian. Contrary to what has often been argued, such an alternation is not phonologically conditioned but syntactically- and discursively-driven. Verb form alternation is an exponent of a systematic distinction marking argument realization modes. This alternation shows the trappings of a complex inflectional System with a morphomic distribution of the two forms (Aronoff 1994). In addition, this morphosyntactic distinction receives a natural explanation if one abandons any analysis in terms of Case Assignment. The distribution of the two forms of verbs is remarkable: the contexts in which they appear do not form a natural class. The morphological sensitivity to argument realization provides a strong argument for distinguishing between the different types of complements. A first finding of this thesis concerns Focus phenomena When the Long Form appears with non-clausal complements, they carry Verum Focus. On the other hand, contrastive focus appearing with ditransitives provide a good diagnostic for determining passivization. Ditransitives seem to passivize with the PP agent, only when they have an object argument missing. Otherwise focus of the object is done via object topicalization and subject pro drop with the construction remaining in the active voice. A second innovation relates to unaccusative verbs which clearly differ from passive verbs in many respects. A final distinction brought to light herein concerns the distinction between raising and control verbs. The cited phenomena, not to mention copular and copulaless clauses, all provide evidence for a strict lexicalist approach to grammar

Full textThis researh highlights a phenomenon that is the common bakground of the various modes of manifestation analysed by the french contemporary phenomenology. That phenomenon is highlighted by the analysis of the works of Jean-LucMarion, Mihel Henry and Emmanuel Levinas. The analysis of the works of Marion brings us to a definition of the metaphysics : it considers that the manifestation is always the prerogative of a subject. Against this idea, the phenomenology highlights a phenomenon that appears before any subject. The phenomenon that shows itself that way is the phenomenal. It’s on that that the donation spreads, and if that donation does not give its content to the manifestation, it is the deployment of the phases that structure the phenomenality. The analysis of the works of Henry brings us to a distinction between the way that the phenomenal appears and the way that the ego appears. The contents of the manifestation of the phenomenal is also its way of appearance, and in that sense, the phenomenal is affectivity. But that kind of affectivity is impersonal, and concerns an abundance of affective qualities. It must be distinguish from the fact to feel itself considered in itself whih is that essence of affectivity on whih the self seize its selfhood. The analysis of the works of Levinas allows a description of the deployment of the phases of the phenomenality in two movements. By a movement of enstasis, the essence of affectivity gets distilled from the phenomenal. By a movement of extasis, the gulf of the « there is », the idea of infinity, and the phenomenological distance, evaporates from the phenomenal. The unity of these two movements is called diastasis

Full textAlgiers and Oran varieties of Arabic are characterized by regional accents which are more easily recognized by Algerian listeners thanks to segmental and lexical rather than suprasegmental informations. In a first experiment, we found that intonation patterns which characterize Algiers and Oran varieties were more intense in emphatic contexts. To study this phenomenon and its influence in the identification of these two dialects from prosody, we compared prosodic features (mainly FO movements) associated with different types of focus: broad focus, emphatic narrow focus, contrastive narrow focus and interrogative focus. It appears from the acoustical analysis of the speakers' productions that recurrences of prosodic patterns that differentiate the two dialects were observed in only two types of focus: the emphatic narrow focus when it is placed at the edge of an intonation phrase and the interrogative focus. Emphatic focus is produced in the Algiers dialect by a rising falling contour and in the Oran dialect, this focus is realized either with a contour which is flat or slightly rising. In the interrogative focus we find the same intonation contours but these are more amplified in the case of Algiers speakers than for Oran speakers: for the latter, the last syllable is always rising and is preceded by a falling contour. They also produce more lengthening in contrastive focus. The analysis of the interaction between the identification of the two dialects and the four types of focus showed that Algiers and Oran speakers are better identified when their utterances are produced with emphatic narrow focus and interrogative focus

Full textIn this thesis, I offer a comparative approach to Left-dislocation constructions in both standard Arabic (SA) and English. Under recent theoretical developments, I investigate the syntax and the discourse properties of constructions involving left-dislocation in SA and compare them with their English counterparts. In the first part, I discuss the syntactic properties of SA left-dislocation and compare them with cross-lingusitic CLLD, HTLD, and Topicalization. A further comparison between SA and English Left-dislocation is presented provides an important ground for an evaluation of the SA data. A new classification of Left-dislocated structures, which takes into account SA and English data, is offered. In the second part, I investigate the status of resumptives in both HTLD and CLD. I claim that in HTLD, the RP is a syntactically non-connected argument but a pragmatically “connected” referential pronoun, provided the HTLDed is salient enough in discourse. It is further argued that resumptives and gaps in CLD are not in free variation. In the third part, it is proven that SA CLD left-dislocation constructions pattern alike with English data at the discourse level. Likewise, it is argued that the absence of resumptives in CLD I does not promote the CLDed element to a Topic status. It is only the overt coreference of a RP with a discourse-linked antecedent in CLD II that renders the CLDed salient in discourse thereby promoting it to a Topic status

Full textThis thesis discusses the phenomenological method of Emmanuel Levinas. Our hypothesis is that it is performed under the name of “Concretization of the idea of Infinity”, and that this method of Concretization can be defined as the Concretization (or as the restoration of the sense and of the mode of being) of Infinity placed in myself through the Concretization (or the restitution of the content of idea and of the mode of idea) of the Idea placed in myself. Our research examines an exegesis of Infinity entered in the “I think” of transcendental apperception according to the incarnation of the Idea placed in my primordial sphere called the Same, what we understand as the “Phenomenology of the idea of Infinity” in Levinas. The mode of idea (idein) and the content of idea (idea) of this Idea are the object of our work of Concretization. On the other hand, this Concretization is called phenomenological Deduction, which is the restitution of concrete situations from which we could attain the plentifully concrete signification of the Idea placed in myself, the two moments (idein/idea) grasped in their complete significance. These moments, which come into existence in the Idea in myself, correspond to the “indescribable” in Levinas in so far as they can be described in terms of “experience” at the cost of a certain “betrayal”. The Translation of the indescribable despite the inevitable betrayal and the Reduction of the latter are the task of our work of Concretization. The method of Levinas can thus be summarized as philosophical Translation and Reduction executed under the name of phenomenological Deduction (Concretization) and accompanied by the Reduction of Reduction executed under the name of Emphasis (Concretization in the original meaning)

Full textProsodic highlighting refers to the distinction of a constituent through various prosodic means, especially accentuation and intonation. It is taken to fulfill several functions: marking the different types of focus, as well as emphatic functions (named here “insisting” and “expressiveness”). The main goal of this thesis is to determine whether prosodic highlighting and its functions display specific features in interpreted speech, a speaking style that can be defined as the oralization of a written text previously memorized by the speaker (typically an actor). This question is relevant for linguistics and phonetics on several counts. First, little is still known about prosodic differences between functions of prosodic highlighting. Moreover, few studies have analyzed the prosodic characteristics of interpreted speech. Finally, through their innovative protocols, the two experiments described in this thesis present a methodological contribution. A production experiment consisted in having speakers replicate spontaneous conversations in read and interpreted speech. A group of experts then annotated the occurrences of prosodic highlighting in the corpus, and assigned a function to each occurrence. A perception experiment was also led in order to compare the realization of each function independently of speaking style. Despite a relatively low agreement rate between experts (which raises several methodological and theoretical questions), our analyses reveal several important results. The frequency of occurrence of prosodic highlighting is highest in interpreted speech, followed by read speech. This confirms our prediction and suggests that interpreted speech is more suited to the study of prosodic highlighting than other speaking styles. A strong association is observed between insisting and initial secondary accent, which confirms many previous studies. However, there is almost no influence of speaking style on the realization of prosodic highlighting and its functions. We attribute this result to a lack of data and to the fact that some prosodic features were not taken into account in the analysis

Full textThe aim of our study is to modelise the prosodic interlanguage of Francophone learners of English in order to provide useful criteria for a semi-automatic assessment of their prosodic level in English. Learner assessment is a field that requires to be very rigorous and fair when setting up criteria that ensure validity, reliability, feasibility and equality, whereas English prosody is highly variable. Hence, few studies have carried out research in assessing prosody because it represents a real challenge. To address this issue, a specific strategy has been devised to elaborate a methodology that would ensure assessing a reading task successfully. The approach relies upon the constant symbiosis between prosody and a speaker’s subjective response to their environment. Our methodology, also known as « profiling », first aims at selecting relevant native perceived and acoustic prosodic features that will optimize assessment criteria by using their degree of emphasis and creating speakers’ prosodic profiles. Then, using the Longdale-Charliphonia corpus, the learner's productions are analysed acoustically. The automatic classification of the learners based on acoustic or perception prosodic variables is then submitted to expert aural assessment which assesses the learner evaluation criteria. This study achieves: A modelisation of non-native English prosody based on assessment grids that rely upon features of both native and non-native speakers of English, namely, speech rate – with or without the inclusion of pauses, register, melody and rhythm,A semi-automatic evaluation of 15 representative learners based on the above modelisation – ranking and marking,A comparison of the semi-automatic results with those of experts' auditory assessment; correspondence between the two varies from 56.83% to 59.74% when categorising the learners into three prosodic proficiency groups

Full textThe general trend toward increased use of computer models and simulations during product development has led to a need for accurate and reliable product models. The function of many products relies on contact interfaces between interacting components. To simulate the behavior of such products, accurate models of both components and interfaces are required. Depending on the purpose of the simulation, interface models of different degrees of complexity are needed. In simulation of very large systems with many interfaces, it might be computationally expensive to integrate detailed models of each individual interface. Condensed models, or abstractions, that describe the interface properties with a minimum of degrees of freedom are therefore required.
This thesis deals with mechanical interfaces with an emphasis on friction. In the four appended papers friction models are discussed in terms of condensed models, as well as in terms of more detailed contact models. The aim is to study how friction can be modeled in behavioral simulation of products and to discuss the convenience and relevance of using different types of friction models as building blocks of a system model in behavioral simulations.
Paper A presents a review of existing condensed friction models for sliding contacts under different running conditions and discusses the models from both simulation and tribological points of view.
In papers B and C a simplified contact model, called the elastic foundation model, is used to model friction in a boundary-lubricated rolling and sliding contact. The model is integrated in a dynamic rigid body model of a mechanical system, the system behavior is simulated, and the result is compared with experimental results.
Paper D discusses the application of the elastic foundation model to rough surface contact problems and investigates how the error in the elastic foundation results depends on surface roughness.

Applying selective emphasis to photographs is a critical aspect of the visual design process. There is evidence from psychophysics that contrast in texture is a key contributor to saliency in an image, yet unlike other low-level perceptual features, texture cannot be directly modified with existing image-processing software. We present a post-processing technique to subtly change the salience of regions of an image by modifying spatial variation in texture. Our method is inspired by computational models of visual attention that capture sensitivity to outliers in local feature distributions. We use the steerable pyramid, which encodes multi-scale oriented image features and compute a set of power maps which capture the local texture content at each scale and orientation. With this representation, texture variation can be modified to selectively add or remove emphasis in the image. Two user studies provide qualitative and quantitative psychophysical validation of our approach.
