This article addresses some of the problems of an empirical study of literature resulting from the fact that it cannot, qua empirical science, engage in the evaluation of literary texts and the moral issues those texts exemplify as well as the further fact (if it is a fact) that statements about textual meanings in the context of literary interpretations are not empirically true or false. Traditional interpretive literary criticism has always played a significant part in the reproduction and modification of culture. From this point of view, an empirical science of literature must appear severe

This paper reports on a study in which subjects were asked to distinguish translations from originally produced (non-translated) texts. The aim was to identify the linguistic features shared by texts assumed to be translations, as well as those shared by texts assumed to be originally produced. The results show (i) that translations were not readily identifiable, and (ii) that the feature that seemed to guide the subjects’ decisions was the frequency vs. scarcity of target language specific (unique) items in the texts: their frequency led subjects to assume—correctly or incorrectly—that a text

A presumed “long run” aggregate supply curve has become an accepted and widely incorporated construct in contemporary macroeconomics. Unfortunately, that theoretical model, with its vertical supply curve, has been subjected to hardly any empirical testing. The major thrust of the present analysis is to determine whether such testing will show if continued use of the concept is warranted as a virtual representation of the actual economy. The critique herein stresses the necessity for a clock-time format to examine the empirical adequacy of the LRAS construct. Using an arbitrarily chosen four ye

This essay joins recent scholarship on the epistemology of realist fiction by investigating the role of facts in the creation of fiction. Close scrutiny of Anthony Trollope's The Eustace Diamonds (1872) reveals several different processes of fact-making: legal ones as well as nonlegal communal endeavors such as rumor, gossip, and the regulation of propriety. The neat division whereby legal facts belong to the realm of the empirical and the facts of rumor belong to the communal does not hold in the novel, however: underneath the surface of almost any empirical and legal fact are traces and resi

It has always been hard to tell, but one construction goes like this: A fact is determinate only if it is empirically determinable, for empirical evidence under-determines truth about the trans-empirical; theory is underdetermined by data. Therefore, facts about the unobservable, facts of theory, are indeterminate. A fact about the meaning of a person's sentence is only determinate if it is empirically determinable. Abstract:
Modern theoretical and empirical analyses in international trade typically focus on firms as the sole trading actors. This is consistent with the fact that firms have traditionally accounted for the vast majority of trade and, hence, examining their behavior allows for fully characterizing trade margins and assessing their determinants. Emerging and rapidly growing trade modalities such as cross-border e-commerce have started to change this by making it easier for individuals to directly engage in international sales and purchases. However, to what extent and how consumers directly participate

Abstract:
In a real-world data set there is always the possibility, rather high in our opinion, that different features may have different degrees of relevance. Most machine learning algorithms deal with this fact by either selecting or deselecting features in the data preprocessing phase. However, we maintain that even among relevant features there may be different degrees of relevance, and this should be taken into account during the clustering process. With over 50 years of history, K-Means is arguably the most popular partitional clustering algorithm there is. The first K-Means based clustering algo

Abstract:
Widening income disparities, higher corruption and larger informality in many emerging market and developing economies (EMDE) including Latin America, all with pressing and mounting fiscal problems, have rekindled interest in the empirical analysis of the key factors determining the occurrence of fiscal consolidations. Using discrete choice models, this paper examines the drivers of fiscal consolidation episodes in a sample of 148 EMDE between 1980 and 2019 with a focus on Latin America. Consolidations are more likely during good economic times. Inequality does not seem to drive consolidations

Tong, Kimsun, Socheth Hem, and Paulo Santos. The Impact of Irrigation on Household Assets. Cambodia Development Resource Institute, 2011. https://doi.org/10.64202/wp.57.201108.

Abstract:
This paper is based on data from 220 selected households surveyed during 2008-2010 and is intended to shed some light on the relationship between irrigation and household assets such as durable assets, livestock, farm equipment, cows and buffalo, and pull/plough animals. Since irrigation is widely seen as being an endogenous variable, the Instrumental Variable Regression Model is used to measure the effect of irrigation on household assets. Empirical results suggest that irrigation is unlikely to have a positive impact on the amount of durable assets, livestock, farm equipment, cows and buffal

Abstract:
This paper presents a generative algorithm for simulating network polarisation based on attitudinal homophily, i.e., the tendency to connect to others with similar attitudes as oneself. To do so, it applies the notion of preferential attachment to node properties other than degree, aiding intuitive communication within and beyond the network science community. The algorithm works with one or more flexibly weighted attitude dimensions, heterogeneous populations. The generated networks commonly share features of real-world social networks such as (weak) small-worldiness. They can contribute to h
