Abstract:
Despite the importance of social impact to social entrepreneurship research, standards for measuring an organization’s social impact are underdeveloped on both theoretical and empirical grounds. We identify a sample of 71 relevant papers from leading (FT50) business journals that examine, conceptually or empirically, the measurement of social impact. We first describe the breadth of definitions, data sources, and operationalizations of social impact. Based on this analysis, we generate a typology of four approaches to conceptualizing social impact, which we use to organize insights and recommendations regarding improved measurement of the social impact of entrepreneurial ventures.

Abstract:
Does inflation vary across the income distribution? This article reviews the growing literature on inflation inequality, describing recent advances and opportunities for further research in four areas. First, new price index theory facilitates the study of inflation inequality. Second, new data show that inflation rates decline with household income in the United States. Accurate measurement requires granular price and expenditure data because of aggregation bias. Third, new evidence quantifies the impacts of innovation and trade on inflation inequality. Contrary to common wisdom, empirical estimates show that the direction of innovation is a significant driver of inflation inequality in the United States, whereas trade has similar price effects across the income distribution. Fourth, inflation inequality and non-homotheticities have important policy implications. They transform cost-benefit analysis, optimal taxation, the effectiveness of stabilization policies, and our understanding of secular macroeconomic trends—including structural change, the decline in the labor share and interest rates, and labor market polarization.

Abstract:
This article reviews recent developments in the econometrics of early childhood human capital and investments. We start with a discussion about the lack of cardinality in test scores, the reasons it matters for empirical research on human capital, and the approaches researchers have used to address this problem. Next, we discuss how the literature has accounted for the errors in human capital measurements and investments. Then, we focus on the estimation of production functions of human capital. We present two different specifications of the production function and discuss when to use one versus the other. We describe how researchers have addressed cardinality, measurement errors, and endogeneity of inputs to estimate the technology of skill formation. Finally, we take stock of the work to date, and we identify opportunities for new research directions in this field.

Abstract:
Dilemmas of Economic Measurements in Weak Scales The attempts to measure economic phenomena and processes of qualitative nature have become commonplace among scholars engaged in empirical research. The use of measurement in the nominal and ordinal scales, however, requires a thorough knowledge of the meaning of numbers generated in the course of such operations. It is also necessary to have knowledge of acceptable statistical and econometric tools to be used in such research. Unfortunately, researchers often apply methods that are not acceptable for the numbers in the weak scales. As a result they "soup up" the outcome of their empirical research, instead of achieving a substantive truth. This article is devoted to the possibilities of statistical analysis of numbers resulting from the weak scale measurement.

Abstract:
Foreign Direct Investment has been linked with an extensive number of positive consequences both on micro and macro level. Still, firms of emerging economies have difficulties attracting FDI. Part of the problem may also lie in the lack of FDI intent on behalf of the firm management to attain FDI. In this study, we aim to construct a framework that would use for a future empirical research of FDI attraction and FDI intent on the organizational level. A systematic approach is described providing a strong foundation for an empirical study soon to come. The process encompasses research design, development of the measurement tool, data collection, preparation and analysis-planning phase. Additionally, we suggest the potential findings and benefits of research following the framework developed.

First one explores the relationship between the level of fiscal and political decentralization in 22 OECD countries and the academic performance of their students. The chapter concludes that in the most fiscally decentralized countries, its students obtain better academic results, on the contrary for countries with high levels of political decentralization, the results are ambigous. In the second chapter, the goal is to explore whether there is discrimination against homosexual parents during the admission of pupils in primary schools. To conduct the study, a field experiment via email is designed. It concludes that the men homosexual's receive significantly fewer responses than heterosexual's. However, this difference does not exist between women homosexual's and heterosexual couples. The third and last chapter analyzes the role of efficient or equitable educational systems in the formation of citizen's satisfaction with the education system. The chapter concludes that citizens have a positive valuation of its educational system if it is efficient. However, the results for the effect of equity differ depending on the educational stage.

Abstract:
The extent of trade diversification achieved by Malaysia has not been investigated empirically beyond that of its partial inclusion in certain instability export studies. This study has three principal objectives. First, to explore and demonstrate empirically using the entropy analysis technique the level of Malaysia's trade diversification achieved and to compare and analyse this performance with other developing countries with similar profiles. Second, to take stock and investigate policy issues that arise from export instability, as they relate to trade and diversification in the commodity and industrial sector. Third, to complement empirical work on Malaysian international trade, particularly on the previous empirical investigations of instability of exports in the Malaysian economy. Evidence from the study shows that Malaysia has been able to increase its export diversification over the period reviewed comparable to other newly industrialised countries, and in most cases better than other developing economies. Analysis also shows that. commodity export. diversificaLion is basically induced by a significant change in 'within group' diversification (traditional group of exports). similarly ,import diversification also shows evidence of a positive associ ati on wi th the stages of economic development. Analysis of the flexibility index reveals that Malaysia has been able to adjust its structure of exports saUsfactori ly in respond to the changing world market. However, ev.idence of declining flexibilty in the trade structure emerges in the early 1980s, though not strictly implyjng a complete rigjdity in the export structure. Variations in the degree of diversification achieved can be linked to the type of policies and incentives designed and implemented by the state to encourage exports, and domestic supplies consistent with a higher investment growth.

Klege, Rebecca Afua. "Empirical and behavioural economic applications to the energy sector." Doctoral thesis, University of Cape Town, 2020. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/32502.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis contributes to the energy literature by leveraging insights from empirical and experimental economics. The thesis presents four papers with a common goal of understanding specific themes in the energy sector namely: households energy use patterns, behavioural preferences among entrepreneurs operating energy businesses and applications of behavioural nudges to reduce energy use. The first paper set the tone for the two subsequent chapters. The paper: 'Energy Choices and Tenancy in Rwanda' examines the energy choice patterns of households based on their rental status and dwelling types. The fifth Integrated Household Living Conditions Survey (EICV5) conducted over one year, October 2016 to October 2017, together with a bivariate probit model is used. A heterogeneous analysis focused on gender and income differentiated impacts, as well as geographical differences based on the tenancy status of households, is further examined. The results signal that households energy choices in Rwanda differ by rental and dwelling types. The second and third papers ascertain the role of competition and risk preferences among entrepreneurs working in off-grid renewable energy microenterprises and its effects on business success in the context of including more women as entrepreneurs in the energy sector. Specifically, the second paper: 'Competition and Gender in the Lab vs Field: Experiments with Off-Grid Renewable Energy Entrepreneurs in Rural Rwanda' examines the gender differences in competitiveness and how this affects the business success of entrepreneurs operating renewable energy enterprises. Results from the economic experiments are compared to the day to day activities of the business. Findings show that female entrepreneurs are not less likely to compete and are not outperformed by male entrepreneurs. This stands in contrast to several studies, mostly conducted on university students of developed countries. The third paper: 'Risk attitudes, Gender and Business Performance Among off-grid Renewable Energy Entrepreneurs in Rural Rwanda' in a similar context examines the risk attitudes among entrepreneurs and its effect on the performance from a gender perspective. The study adopts a choice list experimental approach to elicit risk attitudes. The results indicate a strong risk aversion among entrepreneurs. The risk aversion found is higher for women compared to men. Entrepreneurs with high risk-taking abilities also tend to record better performance levels. The paper concludes that policies geared towards hedging against risk aversion in entrepreneurial programs may be vital in reducing gender gaps in business performance. The fourth paper: 'The power of nudging: Using feedback, competition and responsibility assignment to save electricity in a non-residential setting' answers the question 'can behavioural interventions achieve energy savings in non-residential settings where users do not face the financial consequences of their behaviour?' The paper relies on a randomized control trial and two behavioural interventions. Results show that behavioural nudges can be useful in reducing energy consumption in a non-residential environment.

Abstract:
Since there exist drawbacks for linear models such as those based on regression techniques, which have been the basis of traditional statistical forecasting models, neural networks are used in this thesis to train and test the input data. This thesis presents a feedforward backpropagation neural network approach to univariate time series analysis. Real world observations of foreign exchange rates in twenty currencies against U.S. dollars have been applied as a study in this experiment. Feedforward connectionist networks have been designed to model daily exchange rates over the period from January 4, 1999 to October 20, 2000. The values of the root mean square error (RMSE) is used as the criterion of selecting the parameters of the training set, testing set, the numbers of the hidden nodes and epochs, the momentum terms and the learning rates. The models obtained in this study by using this method can be used to forecast the movement of these exchange rates.<br>Before analyzing neural network techniques, data preprocessing and correlation analysis are presented. It is found there exist three correlation situations: the currencies between member countries in European Economic Community (EEC) have very strong correlation relationship; the correlations between Chinese Renminbi and the other currencies are very weak; and the correlations between the other currencies are variable with the change of the time period. They are related to the different finance policy, economic situation and the other factors of each country with the different time period.

Kaye-Blake, William. "Demand for genetically modified food : theory and empirical findings." Lincoln University, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/10182/19.

Full text
Abstract:
As economies develop, novel products are created and markets for these products arise. Genetically modified food (GMF) is an example of such a novel product and provides economists with the opportunity to investigate an infant market. Of particular interest with GMF is the impact of consumer reactions on the market. The response of consumers to GMF and their willingness to pay for it has emerged as an important factor in the development of this technology. This research investigates these consumer responses. Prior research suggests that two aspects of consumer behaviour may be relevant for the GMF market. First, consumers may react differently to different types of GMF, so that some products are potentially more economically viable. Secondly, some consumers appear to prefer not having GMF at all. Consumer behaviour is often framed according to neoclassical economic theory. Consumer preferences over goods and the attributes of those goods are generally held to have certain properties. The aspects of consumers' reactions to GMF noted above, however, may be in conflict with two properties of preferences in neoclassical theory. First, preferences over food attributes are not separable, but may interact with each other. Secondly, some consumers may have preferences regarding GMF that are not continuous. As a result, aggregate impacts of introducing GMF may be difficult to measure, which raises a third issue for investigation, aggregation. Finally, an alternative model of consumer behaviour is bounded rationality, which theorises that choices may be discontinuous as a result of specific protocols. It also suggests that consumers seek to make good-enough choices, rather than attempting to maximise their satisfaction. Thus, optimisation or maximisation is the fourth issue considered in this thesis. In order to investigate these properties of consumers' preferences, a choice experiment survey was developed. The strength of a choice experiment for examining these issues is its focus on the impact of each product attribute on a respondent's choices. Thus, it may be possible to identify potentially discontinuous choice patterns and to identify choices affected by interactions between GM technology and other food attributes. Results from a neoclassical analysis of the survey data suggest that some consumers consider the type of benefit created with GM technology in making their choices. In addition, one-quarter to one-half of respondents may have had discontinuous preferences with respect to GMF. Reactions to GMF appear related to respondents' attitudes, but not to socio-economic or demographic descriptors. As a result, aggregate measures of the impact of GMF may not fully account for consumers' responses. A boundedly rational model also has reasonable goodness of fit, and may provide a different perspective on consumer behaviour. It is hoped that the results of this research provide a better understanding of consumer behaviour regarding GMF and, by extension, of the process of consumer adoption of novel products. It is further hoped that this attempt to incorporate choice protocols into discrete choice analysis will provide a useful example for further research.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis consists of two parts: Part I (Chapters 2 and 3) critically assesses a set of methodological tools that are widely used in the literature and that are applied to the empirical analysis in Part II (Chapters 4 and 5). Using a randomised experiment, the first chapter compares pen-and-paper interviewing (PAPI) with computer-assisted personal interviewing (CAPI). We observe a large error count in PAPI, which is likely to introduce sample bias. We examine the effect of PAPI consumption measurement error on poverty analysis and compare both applications in terms of interview length, costs and respondents’ perceptions. Next, we formalise an unproven source of ordinary least squares estimation bias in standard linear-in-means peer effects models. Deriving a formula for the magnitude of the bias, we discuss its underlying parameters. We show when the bias is aggravated in models adding cluster fixed effects and how it affects inference and interpretation of estimation results. We reveal that two-stage least squares (2SLS) estimation strategies eliminate the bias and provide illustrative simulations. The results may explain some counter-intuitive findings in the social interaction literature. We then use the linear-in-means model to estimate endogenous peer effects on the awareness of a community-based development programme of vulnerable groups in rural Tanzania. We denote the geographically nearest neighbours set as the relevant peer group in this context and employ a popular 2SLS estimation strategy on a unique spatial household dataset, collected using CAPI, to identify significant average and heterogeneous endogenous peer effects. The final chapter investigates social network effects in decentralised food aid (free food and food for work) allocation processes in Ethiopia, in the aftermath of a serious drought. We find that food aid is responsive to need, as well as being targeted at households with less access to informal support. However, we also find strong correlations with political connections, especially in the immediate aftermath of the drought.

Abstract:
The majority of organizations are competing to survive in volatile and fierce market environment, especially these days when the Covid 19 has collapsed most businesses. The essential tools for organizational success in the long run are motivation and job satisfaction on employee performance. There is a strong positive relationship between motivation, job satisfaction and organizational effectiveness. One of the main aspects of management is the measurement of employee satisfaction. The role of the manager is to continuously work towards aligning the aspirations of the employee with the goals of the organizations. The aim of this paper is to analyze the drivers of motivation and job satisfaction towards higher level of employee performance. The objective of the present paper is to focus on the relationship between motivation and job satisfaction and its overall impact on employee’s performance. The theoretical framework of this research includes the concepts of motivation, job satisfaction, and employee’s performance. The empirical component of this research and questionnaire were modeled accordingly. Furthermore, the questionnaire included parts where the questions regarding employee expectations, work environment and job organization were asked, while the analysis of the results of the survey was carried out with the SPSS statistical package. The study examines the value and impact of motivation and job satisfaction on employee performance. A sample of 460 employees from public and private sector was surveyed and empirical analysis showed that motivation and job satisfaction directly impact employee performance.

Effect of Spark Discharge Duration and Timing on the Combustion Initiation in a Lean Burn SI Engine. SAE International, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.4271/2021-01-0478.

Full text
Abstract:
Meeting the increasingly stringent emission and fuel efficiency standards is the primary objective of the automotive research. Lean/diluted combustion is a promising avenue to realize high-efficiency combustion and reduce emissions in SI engines. Under the diluted conditions, the flame propagation speed is reduced because of the reduced charge reactivity. Enhancing the in-cylinder charge motion and turbulence, and thereby increasing the flame speed, is a possible way to harness the combustion process in SI engines. However, the charge motion can have a significant effect on the spark ignition process because of the reduced discharge duration and frequent restrikes. A longer discharge duration can aid in the formation of the self-sustained flame kernel and subsequent stable ignition. Therefore, an empirical study is undertaken to investigate the effect of the discharge duration and ignition timing on the ignition and early combustion in a port fueled SI engine, operated under lean conditions. The discharge duration is modulated from 1 ms to 8 ms through a continuous discharge strategy. The discharge current and voltage measurements are recorded during the engine operation to characterize the discharge process. The in-cylinder charge is diluted using fresh air to achieve lean combustion. The in-cylinder pressure measurement and heat release analysis are used to investigate the ignition and combustion characteristics of the engine. Preliminary results indicate that while the discharge duration has a marginal effect on the ignition delay, cyclic variations are notably impacted.
