Abstract:
The increasing global employee mortality rate has called for concern among organisations stakeholders, particularly the trade unions. This is because of high employee’s mortality rate caused by work-related accidents with resultant effect on death, injury and sometimes permanent occupational diseases. These developments have led to the creation of a compensation packages known as ‘Employment Injury Benefits’ for those employees’ that suffer fatal accident, but the administration and implementation of this schemes were erroneously carried out in some countries especially developing economies such as Nigeria. This paper examines administration and implementation of the Employment Injury Benefits (EIB) in Nigeria. It also seeks to find out objectives of the EIB viz-a-viz its main scope as a compensation mechanism for employees with injuries, diseases and even death. Descriptive research method is employed to review Employees’ Compensation Act of 2010 and its relationship with ILO Convention 121 of 1964. This approach helps to achieve employee protection, promote sustainable employee security, wellbeing and development. The paper concludes by discussing the procedure for laying claims and the challenges facing the EIB as well as suggesting solutions in order to achieve sustainable society in Nigeria context.

Abstract:
Since the late nineteenth century, American employers have relied on a program of welfare capitalism to deflect incursions into the workplace from the regulatory state or organized workers. Welfare capitalism encompasses social welfare benefits and health, safety, or leisure programs offered through the workplace—programs established and directed by the employer. In periods of labor upheaval and political social reform, American firms have relied on workplace social welfare as a private, managerial response to political pressure from the state and workers—particularly when workers sought to use the state to improve working conditions and guarantee economic security. Where or when employers no longer faced these threats, managers reasserted their control over the terms of work, compensation, and security. Out of this conflict emerged a public-private welfare regime, heavily tilted toward private sources and based on the exclusion of those who most needed economic assistance. Any narrative of the American welfare state, therefore, belongs within the century-long story of welfare capitalism.

Abstract:
This article focuses on the unexpected relationship between high pay and low job satisfaction in one public sector agency. The results of an Employee Opinion Survey of agency employees are examined in light of the agency's position as a community pay leader. The author concludes that high pay will not alleviate problems of low employee job satisfaction. The use of career anchors is suggested as a means to increase employee job satisfaction and to maintain acceptable turnover levels even in the absence of high pay.

Abstract:
This case is appropriate for an introductory financial analysis course, intermediate case study in financial analysis, or any course that is preparing students to take the CFA exam. Because of the policy analysis that is included, it could also be used in a public finance class or an intermediate microeconomics course. It provides a basis for developing an understanding of how Social Security benefits are calculated. The specific focus of the case is on the Windfall Elimination Provision and the calculations which must be made to re-estimate benefits for those who are affected by this provision. The student plays the role of financial advisor. When advising a client about the stream of income which can be anticipated in retirement, it is vitally important to realize that, if the client has worked both as a government employee and in the private sector, the benefits the client will receive from Social Security may be less than what is indicated in the annual Social Security Statement. The policy implications section of the case also points out some of the surprising affects resulting from the structure of the Windfall Elimination Provision. The questions at the end of the case test the students understanding of the complexities of the system. Depending on the instructors guidance, students can familiarize themselves with the on-line calculators developed by the Social Security Administration.

Abstract:
The topic of this study is to determine the substance of the right to social security in case of incapacity to work due to sickness in the light of Article 67 (1) of the Polish Constitution, and to establish the scope and form of social security on this account. The author presents and justifies the concept of social protection in the event of incapacity to work due to sickness based on the assumption that, although it is granted in connection with professional activity, it does not always have to be associated with loss of earnings. On the other hand, as for the scope of social security, it was assumed that it can cover (in the subjective aspect) not only persons subject to general social insurance and farmers’ social insurance, but also uniformed services as well as judges and prosecutors, while (in the objective aspect) also benefits from the employment (service) relationship, i.e. employee sick pay and emoluments (remuneration) for the time of incapacity to work due to sickness to which professional soldiers, police officers, judges or prosecutors are entitled. The latter is related to the formulation of the thesis that the exercise of the right to social security in case of incapacity to work due to sickness does not take place exclusively in the form of insurance disbursement, since – due to the open content of the norm included in Article 67 (1) of the Polish Constitution – it is also permissible to use other methods of legal protection, including the financing of benefits in this area from the own funds of the employing entities. The discussion is preceded by remarks on the concept of the right to social security, particularly with regard to the legal nature of Article 67 of the Polish Constitution and the essence of this right.

Abstract:
In 1952, under the administration of Plaek Phibunsongkhram, the Social Security concept was introduced in Thailand. This led to thefirst enactment of Social Security Act B.E. 2533 (1990) and Social Security Act (No.3), B.E.2542 (1999). As the Thai society at present,is becoming increasingly interacting with the senior community, but hardly any focus has been placed on assisting and understanding their needs. The elderly has Social Security as a guarantee that they won't be abandoned when they get old. Therefore, social security is a measure that is crucial and essential for employees who apply for old age insurance. Furthermore, the Social Security Office has prescribed the old age compensation benefit as part of a program to improve quality of life or as a guarantee of employment security while retiring in order to produce long-term benefits for the insurer. This article concerned and discussed on the needs of the insurer who applied old age social security benefit: ensuring rights, dignity as well as income security in later life by using the Hierarchy of Need theory of Abraham Maslow and Alderfer's ERG Theory of Clayton Alderfer.

Despite concern about the viability of public retirement programs and potential undersaving for retirement, we still know little about the impact of government provided information on individual behavior. We exploit plausibly exogenous variation in exposure to the world's largest personalized retirement benefits statement from the US Social Security Administration to evaluate the effects of information and encouragement on individual retirement savings decisions. Using three natural experiments between 2011 and 2014 and administrative data, we find no impact of the statements on individual retirement savings in their employer provided retirement accounts.

Abstract:
Employee turnover continues to be an issue in federal organizations, including the Social Security Administration (SSA). While issues such as retiring baby boomers and budget constraints are beyond the control of any agency, retaining employees is critical to maintain essential services. The purpose of this transcendental phenomenological study was to explore SSA employee's lived experiences of job satisfaction and employee turnover to uncover motivators and satisfaction strategies. The conceptual framework for the study was based on Maslow's human needs and Herzberg's two-factor theory. Data were collected from 20 SSA frontline employees using 6 open-ended interview questions. The data were analyzed using a modification of van Kaam's method of analysis of phenomenological data and NVivo 11 Pro. Study results revealed that time, stress, pay and benefits, public service, and interoffice relationships were the prime intrinsic and extrinsic factors participants perceived as directly related to their job satisfaction. They highly valued job enrichment programs, cohesive teams, and pay and benefits, which override daily stressors inherent to the public demands strategies for the agency. Conducting the study in depressed socioeconomic areas might also provide significant insights, particularly since stress and workload were essential dissatisfiers. SSA provides critical services to many vulnerable groups. Strategies that employees perceive as motivating enhance the quality of services and benefits to eligible American citizens, many of whom rely on these services for quality of life, thereby reducing the burden of local communities to support these individuals if SSA services fail.

Butler, Timothy David. "Performance benefits of being a great firm to work for| An investigation from the employee perspective." Thesis, The University of Alabama, 2014. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=3620067.

Abstract:

Increased competitive pressure for speed and innovation, global commoditization, and competition for talented workers has provided firms with greater incentives to assess and improve their human resource strategies with respect to attracting, motivating, and retaining employees. Consequently, many firms want to be perceived by employees as a great firm to work for. However, becoming perceived by employees as a great firm to work for requires a significant resource commitment. If firms are going to make this resource commitment, a relationship between being perceived by employees as a great firm to work for and firm performance should be clearly established. Extant academic studies about being a great firm to work for are generally approached from the managerial perspective. Studies that investigate being a great firm to work for from the employee perspective are more scarce. In order to develop a better understanding of the potential performance benefits of being perceived by employees as a great firm to work for, this study compares the performance of great firms to work for (as determined by employees) to their respective industry averages. Further, potential contextual factors that affect the strength of the relationship between being perceived by employees as a great firm to work for and firm performance are examined in order to identify the situations where devoting resources to being perceived by employees as a great firm to work for is more beneficial. Results support the existence of a relationship between being perceived by employees as a great firm to work for and several firm performance outcomes. In addition, some support for the moderating roles of contextual factors is found.

Sumner, Jennifer. "HEALTHCARE COMMUNICATION NETWORKS: THE DISSEMINATION OF EMPLOYEE INFORMATION FOR HOSPITAL SECURITY." Doctoral diss., University of Central Florida, 2008. http://digital.library.ucf.edu/cdm/ref/collection/ETD/id/3183.

Full text
Abstract:
ABSTRACT: Healthcare in the United States is a system that, organizationally speaking, is fragmented. Each hospital facility is independently operated and is responsible for the hiring of its own employees. However, corrupt individuals can take advantage of this fragmentation and move from hospital to hospital, gaining employment while hiding previous employment history. Traditionally, hospitals have been reluctant to share information on their previous employees, even with other hospitals, for fear of issues surrounding defamation, negligent hiring, and violation of the employee's privacy. However, growth in healthcare services is expected to rise exponentially in the near future, increasing the demand for employees. The need, therefore, to exchange pertinent information regarding employees will become necessary as hospitals seek qualified employees to fill positions throughout their organizations. One way to promote this information exchange is to develop trusted information sharing networks among hospital units. This study examined the problems surrounding organizational information sharing as well as the current level of employee information sharing being conducted by hospitals nationwide. Utilizing a survey of hospital administrators, this study drew upon the theoretical foundations of the Diffusion of Innovation Theory, the Knowledge Management Theory, the Social Exchange Theory and the earlier organizational information sharing frameworks established by Dawes (1996) and Landsbergen and Wolken (1998; 2001) in order to examine the variables that contribute to propensity of hospital administrators to engage in the sharing of employee information with other organizations.

Abstract:
This Bachelor thesis examines the employee benefits accounting IAS 19 on market share prices for companies listed on OMX30. The purpose is to analyze the effect of IAS 19R on three absolute valuation methods, Discounted Cash Flow, Dividend Discount and Residual Income valuation models. Also, what effect salaries, wages and defined benefits obligations in firms consolidated financial statements have had a positive effect on the market share price. The models which have been used to examine the predictability in the stock price valuations in the thesis are estimated using signed and absolute prediction errors. Furthermore, to examine the effect of employee benefits, share valuation models and IAS 19 on market share price a panel data between 2009-2017 have been used. The model includes 22 listed companies on OMX30 as of the 1stof July 2009. Within the econometric framework, four regressions have been applied, all with fixed effects. The results suggest that the employee benefits accounting have no significant impact on market share prices. However, in contrast to previous research, results show that salaries and wages have a positive impact on market share price for companies listed on OMX30.

Abstract:
After the Vietnam War, increased defense funds assigned to the Army National Guard stimulated and supported small communities in Louisiana. Recruits from economically depressed regions lined up to join the Guard because of the competitive pay and the generous education benefits it offered. In the mid-1980s, when a state budgetary shortfall threatened to limit the stream of federal funds and close local armories, communities in Louisiana rallied to keep the doors of their armories open. This paper examines how the readiness efforts of the Louisiana Army National Guard affected the economies of small communities as defense dollars increased following the shift from a draft army to an all-volunteer force and the implementation of Total Force Policy.

Abstract:
In order to assess the continuing imbalance of top executives between genders, I examine the effects of gender diversity within top management teams on firm risk, performance, and executive compensation. Capitalizing on previous analysis, I apply three unique differentiators. First, I utilize current data from 2012 to 2017 from Compustat, CRSP, and ExecuComp. Second, I provide a unique subset view on a firm and individual performance of female CEOs to examine executive compensation. Third, my scope of analysis expands to S&P Composite 1500 companies. I use separate models to estimate the effect of gender diversity on firm risk by examining a firm’s beta and standard deviation of daily returns, on firm performance by examining a firm’s Tobin’sQ, and lastly on executive compensation by examining an executive’s natural logarithm of total compensation. My findings suggest gender diversity among executives appears to have an immaterial effect on a firm’s risk and performance. In turn, I also find that female executives continue to receive less compensation than their male colleagues. However, I find an average female CEO receives a higher level of compensation than an average male CEO. Lastly, I find as gender diversity increases among executives, specifically CEOs, the compensation differences between genders decreases.

Abstract:
Employee Benefits have been earning increasing relevance as a Human Resource Management practice. The present research discusses the importance of the topic from employees’ perspective, in order to theoretically and practically contribute to debate on this field. Furthermore, acknowledging that many of employee benefits are used as a payment method, it has been also relevant to consider means of payment evolution, and its possible impact on Employee Benefits. On regards to theory, the importance of employee benefits, the relevance of the format for its distribution and the most valued employee benefits are discussed. Concerning practical implications, employees’ intention to adopt online forms of payment for the use of Employee Benefits is explored – particularly for the use of Education Employee Benefits. Moreover, this in-company project explores and defines the most adequate service-mix, from all stakeholders’ perspectives. The most relevant conclusions from this research highlight the high value employees attribute to Employee Benefits, particularly to those related to education and childcare. Also, it is clear a preference for online forms of payment for its distribution and use, from all stakeholders’ perspective. Furthermore, employees reveal a clear intention to adopt online forms of payment for the use of Education Employee Benefits. The research is limited to Portuguese context, conditioning extrapolations for other geographies, considering the specific legal context underlying Employee Benefits topic. This project was developed in partnership with Edenred Portugal.

Abstract:
AbstractSocial security is an essential thing needed by everyone, including employment social security for Indonesian workers. The Penggerak Jaminan Sosial Indonesia (PERISAI), an agent in social security, plays an essential role in conveying the benefits of the existing social security program to protect workers. PERISAI’s competencies play a vital role in achieving maximum results in delivering information and participant acquisition. One appropriate method consistent in determining PERISAI’s competencies is the Analytical Hierarchy Process method. The Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) is a compelling and comprehensive methodology that enables groups and individuals to link qualitative factors in the decision-making process. AHP uses a hierarchical model consisting of objectives, criteria (and several sub-criteria), and alternatives for each decision. This method was used with field surveys and field data collection to distribute the questionnaires (for this method). PERISAI’s creativity is the most influential competency in increasing the participation of Social Health Insurance Administration Body (BPJS) Employment in the Medan City Branch. In other words, in conducting recruitment for PERISAI, it is necessary to pay attention to creative competence.

Abstract:
Purpose - The current study integrated number of research fields to develop and test a model on the determinants of employees’ happiness and creativity. Hypothesizing that quality of work life, perceived training intensity and job security affect employees’ happiness and creativity in in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Public sector. Design - The study uses survey data from 120 employees from public sector companies in United Arab Emirates (UAE). Based on an extensive literature review, eight hypotheses were formulated and explored. These were tested through multiple regression analysis using smart PLS Partial Least Squares. Findings – Work life balance, perceived training intensity and job security showed no significant relationship. However, the relationships only exist through the feeling of happiness. Research limitation – The sample is from a single sector (public) in a single country. Future research would benefit from examining the above relationships in privet sector in the UAE. It could also explore the validity of these relationships in the public sector of other countries in the Middle East and Gulf regions. Originality/value –few studies have adequately examined their determinants particularly in UAE. Although research examining the employee creativity in public sector is limited, it is clear that public sector stands to gain from creative employees because employee creativity and innovation will contribute to the attainment of organizational goals. KEY WORDS-Employee creativity, Employee happiness, Job security, Training, Work-life balance, Human resources, UAE, Public sector Paper Type –Research paper

Still slow and uncertain, but still tangible, our labor legislation is beginning to recognize the benefits of digitizing labor law documentation - speed, security, economy, etc. The most important step in this direction was the adoption of the Ordinance on the type and requirements for the creation and storage of electronic documents in the employment file of the employee in 2018. However, are the administrative and judicial practice ready for such a "revolution"? From today's point of view, the possible conclusions do not seem promising.

In The 11th International Conference on Environmental Remediation and Radioactive Waste Management. ASMEDC, 2007. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/icem2007-7180.

Full text
Abstract:
Since 1981, the Community Environmental Monitoring Program (CEMP) has involved stakeholders directly in its daily operation and data collection, as well as in dissemination of information on radiological surveillance in communities surrounding the Nevada Test Site (NTS), the primary location where the United States (US) conducted nuclear testing until 1992. The CEMP is funded by the US Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration, and is administered by the Desert Research Institute (DRI) of the Nevada System of Higher Education. The CEMP provides training workshops for stakeholders involved in the program, and educational outreach to address public concerns about health risk and environmental impacts from past and ongoing NTS activities. The network includes 29 monitoring stations located across an approximately 160,000 km2 area of Nevada, Utah and California in the southwestern US. The principal radiological instruments are pressurized ion chambers for measuring gamma radiation, and particulate air samplers, primarily for alpha/beta detection. Stations also employ a full suite of meteorological instruments, allowing for improved interpretation of the effects of meteorological events on background radiation levels. Station sensors are wired to state-of-the-art dataloggers that are capable of several weeks of on-site data storage, and that work in tandem with a communications system that integrates DSL and wireless internet, land line and cellular phone, and satellite technologies for data transfer. Data are managed through a platform maintained by the Western Regional Climate Center (WRCC) that DRI operates for the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The WRCC platform allows for near real-time upload and display of current monitoring information in tabular and graphical formats on a public web site. Archival data for each station are also available on-line, providing the ability to perform trending analyses or calculate site-specific exposure rates. This configuration also allows for remote programming and troubleshooting of sensors. Involvement of stakeholders in the monitoring process provides a number of benefits, including increased public confidence in monitoring results, as well as decreasing costs by more than 50 percent from when the program was managed entirely by U.S. federal employees. Additionally, the CEMP provides an ideal platform for testing new environmental sensors.

Abstract:
The temporary site offices are directly provided by the contractor, and hence, any associated risk is non-transferable. Thus, the contractors should be aware of sustainable, and cost-effective technologies to be implemented to survive in the competitive construction industry. Relocatable Modular Building (RMB) technology is employed globally as a multi-beneficial building technology for temporary shelter purposes such as site offices. Hence, the research aimed to explore the applicability of RMB technology for temporary offices on construction sites in Sri Lanka. The literature synthesis reviewed the modular building concept and RMB technology globally. Following the qualitative approach, the research adopted a survey strategy. Data was collected through seven semi-structured interviews with industry professionals who were purposively selected under several criteria. Further, data collection was limited to container-based RMBs due to the limited availability of RMB varieties in Sri Lanka. Template analysis was the data analysis technique followed. The findings disclosed that RMBs have already been established in the Sri Lankan construction industry. ‘Relocatability’, reusability, high security, larger usable space within limited land space, ability to rent out, and air-conditioned working environment were found as key benefits of RMBs whereas the unbreathable smell of glue in newly fabricated RMB, handling difficulties, the possibility of overturning, initial cost and external body corrosion were identified as key challenges. Significantly, the contractors are recommended to use RMBs for temporary site offices following proposed strategies such as periodic maintenance procedures, systematic site administration, and safety improvements to overcome identified challenges.

Abstract:
The application of the internet to the Human Resource function (e-HR) combines two elements: one is the use of electronic media whilst the other is the active participation of employees in the process. These two elements drive the technology that helps organisations lower administration costs, improve employee communication and satisfaction, provide real time access to information while at the same time reducing processing time. This technology holds out the promise of challenging the past role of HR as one of payroll processing and manual administrative processes to one where cost efficiencies can be gained, enabling more time and energy to be devoted to strategic business issues. The relative quick gains with low associated risk have prompted many Australian companies to realise what can be achieved through the implementation of a business to employee (B2E) model. Employee Self Service (ESS), a solution based on the B2E model enables employees to access the corporate human resource information system 24x7. This paper adopts a case study approach with a view to investigating the benefits and associated issues obtained from an implementation of an ESS in an Australian public sector organisation. Keywords: Employee Self Service, e-Human Resources, B2E, HRMIS, ERP Systems, Australian Case Study

Abstract:
During the last decade there have been many phenomena related to the condition of employee. Without a doubt, the most intense impact on the determination of labour status has come by the so called telework or homework as a special form of flexible employment model. Even though Labour Law of Serbia regulates this kind of work in Art. 42, it does not define specific jobs which can be undertaken. Most frequently those jobs are related to the IT sector like server maintenance, administration of social networks, as well as, translation services, accountant services, etc. From the employer point of view, this model of employment has many benefits, usually related to cutbacks. On the other hand side, this kind of employment led to further flexibilization of working and employment conditions which weakened protective status of an employee. Since the Republic of Serbia recently introduced state of emergency there is a significant need to search for an alternative ways of work organization, not only in private, but also in public sector.

Abstract:
Continuous training of personnel from security and defense institutions through e-learning is an effective alternative for continuous training of employees in order to adapt to the demands of the changes inherent in the global society in which we live. The opportunity to participate in lifelong learning through e-learning brings some benefits for both the employer and the employee in the field of security and defense. In the case of the employer we can say that it allocates small amounts, completely eliminating the need to travel to a specific location for the course and to incur expenses for the accommodation and the employee's meal; the possibility of participating as many employees at the same time as it is not required the complete absence from the daily activity; the opportunity to enroll employees to as many such courses in different fields thus ensuring interdisciplinarity. From the employee's perspective, the advantage is that he does not have to stay away from the family during the training period through e-learning; can benefit from the expertise of well-known reading experts in certain areas for which travel is not allowed because of the busy schedule. Like any alternative of lifelong learning also e-learning it has its own disadvantages or better said limits, among which we mention: limiting the human interaction of the employees, otherwise said eliminates the classical socialization during the break of an clasic course. E-learning as an eficient strategy of lifelong learning continues to gain more and more ground, demonstrating that it has real benefits for society and for making time for all the actors involved in the training process: trainer, employee, employer.

Abstract:
In recent years, the use of the Internet together with the technologies that make possible the process of task automation has been adopted in all sectors of activity, in production, administration and education. Thus, the information revolution has also generated changes in the way of carrying out the daily activities of the contemporary society, characterized by dynamism and dependence on information, so that it was necessary to develop new technologies that would meet the demands of modern people. Cloud technology offers many benefits to users, fast and simplified deployment methods, reduced costs, continuous availability of resources, scalability and elasticity, and it can be easily adapted to the needs of organizations. The use of cloud computing technology in e-learning domain represents an ongoing process, through which the teaching and learning methods adapt to the current technology-based society. Both students and teachers can benefit by the features offered by this type of architecture, using the electronic environment in a dynamic and interactive process of learning, teaching and evaluation. The migration of the services used in the educational framework in the cloud involve certain challenges from the point of view of data and information security. One of the most important challenges for cloud service providers is the need to ensure data security, mainly ensuring confidentiality, integrity and availability. Increasingly frequent cyber-attacks can cause significant material damage if no specific security measures are configured. Most attacks occur by exploiting security breaches caused by technology vulnerabilities and misconfigured network equipment. This article analyzes the main vulnerabilities of cloud technology, compared to current security methods, which can cause critical security issues, such as data breach. Also, an additional security policy applicable to both public and private cloud architectures, specific to the educational environment, is proposed to offer additional protection against threats.

Arewa, Moyo. How Will Central Bank Digital Currencies (CBDCs) Influence Tax Administration in Developing Countries? Institute of Development Studies, May 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.19088/ictd.2024.026.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper explores the potential benefits and risks to tax administrations of implementing central bank digital currencies (CBDCs), a digital version of national currencies that is gaining momentum worldwide. It outlines some of the key features of CBDCs and then considers their implications for tax administration in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) generally. The emergence of CBDCs provides LMICs with a significant opportunity to improve financial inclusion, improve payment systems and increase tax collection. CBDCs provide greater transparency, security and traceability, which could help tax authorities track income and net worth, detect tax evasion and increase tax revenue. However, there are also complex combinations of risks associated with deploying CBDCs. The revenue authorities need to thoroughly assess how they should adapt to these challenges. Governments must also ensure that CBDCs are developed and implemented transparently, fairly and consistently with broader public policy goals. This will help maximise the potential benefits of CBDC adoption while mitigating the risks – which may be particularly significant in LMICs.
