Abstract:
AbstractThe restoration perspective on human adaptation offers a broad view of relations between environment and health; however, it remains underutilized as a source of insight for nature-and-health studies. In this chapter, I start from the restoration perspective in showing ways to extend theory and research concerned with the benefits of nature experience. I first set out the basic premises of the restoration perspective and consider how it has come to have particular relevance for understanding the salutary values now commonly assigned to nature experience. I then discuss the currently conventional theoretical narrative about restorative effects of nature experience and organize some of its components in a general framework for restorative environments theory. Extending the framework, I put forward two additional theories. These call attention to the restoration of resources as held within closer relationships and as held collectively by members of a population. In closing, I consider ways to work with the general framework and further develop the narrative about nature, restoration, and health. The extensions made here raise important considerations for nature preservation efforts, urban planning, health promotion strategies, and ways of thinking about human–nature relations.

This chapter assesses the role of employers as Culture of Health mediators. With their significant influence over the lives of their workforce, employers have the authority to make choices that either promote or inhibit a Culture of Health within their organizations. They also may play important roles in building a Culture of Health in the communities in which they are located and where their employees live. The chapter then considers the approaches taken by three types of employers—Fortune 500 companies, a large retail chain, and the military. Two studies of Fortune 500 companies examine corporate transparency in reporting health-promotion policies and efforts to create healthy work environments and strengthen communities. Another study illustrates the feasibility of stabilizing work schedules of low-wage retail workers to benefit workers as well as store sales.

Abstract:
The Norwegian Institute of Public Health («Folkehelseinstituttet») (FHI) states that Norway faces several major health challenges. Sick leave is 6%, costing companies and the state tens of billions annually. The FHI proposes, with the support of the Public Health Act («Folkehelseloven») and the national strategy «HelseOmsorg21», that preventive measures should be developed against the negative lifestyle factors to decrease the number of new cases in the life-reducing disease group. The purpose of this chapter is to answer why and how organizations should develop a healthy performance culture through strategic health care management supported by additional health, environmental and safety («HMS») directives. Based on cross-disciplinary theorizing, a definition of a healthy performance culture is proposed. This type of culture consists of dimensions such as health objectives, shared health values, supportive health environment, openness, goal-oriented and value-based behavior of leaders and employees, and a winning mindset. The chapter also underscores the importance of the related individual HR drivers like fun at work, engagement, physical and mental health. The company cases Schibsted/VG, Gjensidige, Findus and Wilhelmsen and findings from in-depth interviews show that health-promoting activities may be the result of a HR strategy, or just individuals’ initiative and voluntariness among the companies’ sports enthusiasts. The case of Findus exemplifies an ongoing development toward a healthy performance culture and the importance of leaders’ participation. The findings support the theoretical model showing the relations between a healthy performance culture, individual HR drivers and organizational performance. A framework for developing a healthy performance culture is presented.

Abstract:
Urban environments can be toxic to people’s mental health. Life in the city can also have positive impact on education, cultural enrichment, and employment opportunities and access to services when needed. Wide variety of housing and transport can help. Cities can also provide sexual and ethnic diversity. As most clinical services themselves are set in the urban areas, clinicians often do not understand the impact of urban environment on people’s well-being. Similarly, very often urban designers and city planners do not take into account the effect built environments can have on people’s mental health. It is critical that as part of prevention of mental illnesses and promotion of mental health both groups work with other stakeholders to ensure that urban environments are safe and clean and provide a milieu for people to work, play, and live in without endangering their well-being. Joint working should be the first crucial step.

Employers are vested in pursuing educational strategies that work to improve employee health and decrease health care utilization. The use of e-mail for health promotion efforts at the worksite presents the freedom to deliver messages outside the boundaries of time and location; preliminary studies suggest that it is an effective way to encourage health behavior. This chapter explores health behavior change, adult learning theory, and media effects research regarding targeted e-mail messaging at the worksite to offer insight into how people perceive and interact with different forms of messages and what kinds of visual enhancements may positively impact perception of the message itself. Results of a qualitative study investigating employees’ interpretations of message meaning, perceptions of visual e-mail enhancements and associated health behavior change will be discussed as promising research in worksite health promotion.

Abstract:
Companies want their employees to work to their potential, to have high productivity and low absenteeism. Research has shown that workers produce more when they are satisfied with their occupational role, which is dependent on a number of factors, including job control, job reward, and creating a work culture that values and responds to employee feedback. It is time for employers to develop comprehensive workplace wellness programs that incorporate a mental health component, including stress reduction programs. Stress management activities need to be integrated into the everyday life of the company, with strong, visible support from the firm's leadership. The Job-Demand Resources (JD-R) Model of stress management in the workplace provides a solid theoretical underpinning for workplace wellness programs, and enables companies to tailor stress management assessments and interventions to their industry and jobsite. EAPs should make promotion of their counseling services and accessibility to these services a higher priority so as to improve employee usage rates, which are currently quite low.

Abstract:
Resilience refers to the process of adaptive recovery following adversity or trauma. It is likely to include an intertwined series of dynamic interactions between neural, developmental, environmental, genetic, and epigenetic factors over time. Neuroscientific research suggests the potential role of the brain’s threat and reward systems, as well as executive control networks. Developmental research provides insight into how the environment may affect these neural systems across the lifespan towards greater risk or resilience to stress. Genetic work has revealed numerous targets that alter key neurochemical systems in the brain to influence mental health. Current challenges include ambiguities in the definition and measurement of resilience and a simplified focus on resilience as the absence of psychopathology, irrespective of levels of positive mental functioning. Greater emphasis on understanding the protective aspects of resilience and related well-being outcomes are important to delineate the unique neurobiological factors that underpin this process, so that effective interventions can be developed to assist vulnerable populations and resilience promotion.

Abstract:
This work aims to develop interventions to reduce automobile idling, where a driver runs the engine unnecessarily while not moving. Idling is a serious problem that wastes fuel, pollutes the air, and releases greenhouse gas emissions. Drivers idle for different reasons, including misconceptions about the time needed to warm up their engines and how much additional fuel is expended by turning the engine off and back on. Information-based interventions, i.e., messages to address idling, may therefore work more effectively to change behavior by correcting such misconceptions than for other types

Abstract:
With ever-increasing ambient temperatures many electric power plants that employ cooling lakes to reject their waste heat into the environment are struggling to maintain reasonable turbine backpressures during the hot summer months when electric load demand is often the greatest. Some consider adding mechanical draft cooling towers (MDCT) to further cool the condenser circulating water (CCW) prior to entering the main condenser, but the additional auxiliary power required to drive MDCT fans often consume the additional generator output resulting from the lower backpressure. Spray ponds offer s
