Abstract:
ASEAN economies have undergone significant structural transformation, driven by increasing foreign direct investment (FDI), trade openness, and renewable energy adoption. This study investigates the long-run relationship among these variables and their effects on economic growth across ten ASEAN countries from 1998 to 2022. Using panel data and an Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) approach, this research examines both short-run and long-run dynamics. The long-run estimation reveals that FDI negatively affects economic growth with a coefficient of -0.486, indicating crowding-out effects and

The structural adjustment programme adopted in 1990 led to the removal of all existing pre-reform regulations and restrictions imposed on the Indian industries. This radically transformed India’s trade relations with international markets. The liberalization of Indian economy on one hand accelerated foreign capital as well as technology influx while on the other hand increased competition for the domestic economy. Thus the increased openness and flexibility arising from the economic transformation prompted the domestic producers to resort to alternative informal routes of employment thereby le

This article presents a quantitative analysis of growth, structural change and employment linkages at the aggregate level and by sector under the state- and market-led regimes in India. The underlying objectives are: (a) to understand how economic liberalization has affected the economic and labour market structures, and linkages thereof; and (b) to analyse how these dynamics have affected the generation of productive employment in the economy. The analysis is based on Shapley decompositions. Our results suggest that the contribution of structural change in employment to growth declined drasti

Though migration shifts have been significantly influenced by political factors such as the Gulf crisis and tensions with Saudi Arabia, economic factors such as the Thai government's liberalization of markets and the expansion of trade and direct foreign investment have contributed to changes in labor market needs. ABSTRACT As part of the negotiation process to join the WTO, China’s average tariff rate on imports decreased from over 40 percent in 1992 to about 15 percent in 2000. I study how the tariff cuts fueled structural transformation leveraging spatial variation in exposure to the tariff cut across Chinese counties due to sectoral variations in the level of tariff cuts and variation in the industrial composition of the counties’ economies. Using input-output linkage across industries, I find that tariff cuts in upstream industries significantly reduced measured input costs in counties that speciali

Structural transformation is a widely debated research issue because of its ties with productivity, labor distribution, incomes and other facets of economic development. It is well explored in developing country settings. There are also studies that give thorough analysis of the issues in developed economies. As for the transitional countries the focus of economic policy-making and research has mainly been on the economic and institutional reforms that aim at transition to functioning market economy. Historically, in many countries around the world exports have a significant role in contributing to employment generation and sustain economic growth. So, this research analyses the effectiveness of export in Nepal by using a regression analysis for the periods of 1975-2021 of 47 annual time series. According to empirical findings, Nepalese RGDP has an inverse impact on export while RGDP of India, exchange rate of US Dollar and trade liberalization are insignificant. We study the role of multinationals (MNCs) in facilitating firm-level and aggregate structural transformation. Using a stylized model of multinational production and trade, we show that an inward multinational liberalization in the manufacturing sector raises employment in host country firms, and decreases manufacturing employment, while also raising services employment, in the parent firms. We also show the conditions under which aggregate structural transformation occurs. We test the models firm-level predictions by using confidential microdata from Japan. We study the response of Japanese M
