Full textIn order to achieve the stabilization of pavements, emerge new technologies of stabilizing agents such as foamed bitumen and asphalt emulsion. In the Roadway Project Dv-Humajalso-Desagüadero and Tacna-Capazo-Mazocruz, the technical solution was to apply foamed bitumen in road Section 7 Tarata-Capazo. Thermodynamic condition is fundamental where foamed bitumen is evidenced in Section 7, the temperature is lower than 5 °C, so the asphalt don’t disperse on the Mastic, causing an agglomeration of asphalt in the form of chewing gum and making impossible the compaction of the pavement layer. In this problem, It’s proposed to stabilize the granular material with asphalt emulsion, so the asphalt particles are dispersed in a solution to 25°C. The technique is a mixture of cold asphalt and is feasible for the critical thermodynamic conditions of the Section 7 Tarata-Capazo. The objective is to achieve the stabilization of the pavement using asphalt emulsion. The design of the cold asphalt mix applies the Illinois Methodology to determine the optimum quantity of residual asphalt. So that, the design of the pavement is done with the methodology of AASHTO 93, which allows to determine the thicknesses of the pavement layers that will satisfy the serviceability and traffic for the useful life of the project. Finally, It´s possible to validate the stabilization of the pavement in the field with the compaction and deflectometry controls, demonstrating the versatility of the emulsion as a cold asphalt mixture against the critical thermodynamic conditions of the Project.

Full textThe use of geosynthetics in roadway systems has received considerable attention over the past decades. Paving fabrics have been used for rehabilitation of pavements to reduce propagation of cracks and to extend pavement life. In addition, the success of this technique depends directly on the understanding of the geotextiles behavior when impregnated with asphalt. I this sense, this study evaluated different nonwoven geotextiles frequently used in the anti-reflective cracking systems, focusing on initial stiffness gain and permeability reduction. Virgin and impregnated specimens of polyester and polypropylene nonwoven geotextiles were used. Cationic rapid setting emulsified asphalt (CRS) was used as asphalt binder. Wide-width tensile tests were performed in accordance with ABNT - NBR 12824/93 and water vapor transmission tests (WVT) were performed according to ASTM E96M/05. The results of tensile tests on impregnated geotextiles showed significantly increase in tensile stiffness values. Results also showed high increase in stiffness values at strain levels less than 0.03% and decrease on stiffness gains with the increase of strains. Water vapor transmission tests demonstrated that cationic asphalt emulsion applied on nonwoven geotextiles allows a drastic reduction in permeability values and may turn this system in a low permeability barrier.

Full textThe preparation of cold sand-asphalt mixtures with asphalt emulsion has some characteristics that can affect the laboratory evaluation of its performance. These characteristics are attributed to asphaltic emulsion that needs additional cares in relation to others types of bituminous binders. One of these cares is the curing procedure before compaction, to favor moisture loss. In this work the influence of moisture loss on the results of some laboratory tests is evaluated for three cold sand-asphalt mixtures - mixtures without filler, with crushed gravel filler and with portland cement filler. The tests used for this evaluation are: optimum asphalt content with and without curing before the mixtures compaction, moisture loss control, Marshall tests with moisture loss variation and static creep test. Moisture loss before compaction showed to have a clear influence on the results of Marshall tests. However the static creep test revealed that even those mixtures with the best Marshall test performances are very susceptible to permanent deformation and fragile rupture under low axial stress.
