Abstract:
Antibiotics have been used widely for the treatment of bacterial infections for over half a century. However, the emergence of resistance to antibiotics has aroused public health concern, leading to the development of antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) as potential alternative therapeutic agents against bacterial infections. AMPs are naturally found in many species and have important roles in our innate immune defense systems. AMPs are usually cationic amphipathic peptides with membrane destabilizing property. They have a relatively broad spectrum of antimicrobial activity and pathogens are less li

Abstract:

The thesis focuses on the development of new homogeneous gels for the separation of drug enantiomers, peptides, DNA and virus by electrophoresis and electrochromatography in capillaries and microchips. This type of separation media offers high resolution and small zone broadening. Compared to particulate beds the resolution in this type of separation media is high because the eddy diffusion is zero and the resistance to mass transfer is small, since the diffusional distance between two polymer chains in the gel is considerably shorter than that between two beads in a packed bed.

The g

Abstract:
Organic trans-annular assemblies constitute an expanding class of structures with promising applications for the design of nanotechnological devices. Among the strategies developed for the engineering of organic nanotubes, those characterized by regular alternating enantiomeric amino acid sequences have been proven particularly useful. In fact, cyclic peptides with an even number of regularly alternating D- and L-amino acids have the tendency to adopt local -conformation that are capable of forming trans-annular self-assembling architectures, hydrogen bond directed. Abstract:
Understanding the relation between amino acid sequences and protein structures is one of the most important problems in modern molecular biology. However, due to the complexities in the protein structure, this task is really daunting. Hence, understanding the structural features of proteins and the rules of folding is central to the design of novel and more effective biomaterials. With the inception of the de novo design of synthetic mimetics for protein structural elements, the study of designed peptides is a subject of intense current research. The work described in this thesis involves the study of weak interactions by NMR spectroscopy and using them to develop novel applications. The two different applications chosen are i) using molecular interactions for chiral discrimination and ii) understanding the nature of the interaction between peptide and nanoparticles to develop potent antibacterial agents. The thesis, which is divided into five chapters starts with a general introduction of NMR spectroscopy for the study of molecular interactions in conjunction with other techniques. The remaining four chapters focus on four different a
