ABSTRACTGeriatric medicine became a part of medical science in the middle of the nineteenth century, more than haifa century before ‘geriatrics’ was named, and a century before it was established in British health care. It was born in Germany along with ancient theories that ageing was in itself a disease, but was increasingly influenced by new pathological and physiological knowledge on ageing and disease, and further developed during the great French clinical era of the latter part of that century. As part of the development of this particular branch of medical science, a gradual categorisation of old age took place, with much credit to the Belgian statistician Quetelet, who may be regarded as the inventor of the category ‘the elderly’ defined by age. The developing biomedical images of old age were given much space in encyclopaedias, dictionaries and popular health literature after 1870. Therefore, the defined existence of old-age limits must also have influenced the legislators responsible for the first national Acts on old- age pension, which now celebrate their centenary.

Abstract:
This volume brings together thoroughly reworked versions of a selection of papers presented at the conference The Notion of Commitment in Linguistics, held at the University of Antwerp in January 2007. It is the companion volume to a collection of essays in French to be published in Langue Française and devoted to La notion de prise en charge. Commitment is a close counterpart toprise en charge, and two contributors, Celle and Lansari, use it essentially as a translation of the French term. However, commitment and its verbal cognates (to commit NP to and to be committed to) do not cover the exact same range of meanings as prise en charge. For a thorough assessment of the French term, we refer readers to the introduction to the Langue Française volume. In the present article, we focus entirely on commitment. The term is widely used in at least three major areas of linguistic enquiry:1 studies on illocutionary acts, studies on modality and evidentiality, and the formal modelling of dialogue/argumentation. In spite of its frequent use, the notion has rarely been theorised and has never been the subject of a monograph or a specialised reader. In keeping with this is the fact that none of the many dictionaries and encyclopaedias of linguistics or philosophy that we have consulted devotes a separate entry to it. Section 1 of this introduction briefly reviews what commitment means in the three fields just mentioned. Now and then, with respect to a particular issue, pointers are given to which articles in this collection have something to say about the issue. In section 2, we take a lexical and syntactic look at the ways in which the contributors to the present volume use the term. In section 3, we outline each of the contributions, with a focus on the role that commitment plays in them.

The article has as its object the elucidation of the history of the Vyshnivetsky Castle Library, definition of the content of its fund, its historical and cultural significance, correlation of the founder of the Library Mychailo Servaty Vyshnivetsky with the Book.The Vyshnivetsky Castle Library was formed in the Ukrainian historical region of Volyn’, in the Vyshnivets town – “family nest” of the old Ukrainian noble family of the Vyshnivetskies under the “Korybut” coat of arm. The founder of the Library was Prince Mychailo Servaty Vyshnivetsky (1680–1744) – Grand Hetman and Grand Chancellor of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, Vilno Voievoda. He was a politician, an erudite and great bibliophile. In the 30th–40th of the 18th century the main Prince’s residence Vyshnivets became an important centre of magnate’s culture in Rich Pospolyta. M. S. Vyshnivetsky’s contemporaries from the noble class and clergy knew quite well about his library and really appreciated it. According to historical documents 5 periods are defined in the Library’s history. In the historical sources the first place is occupied by old-printed books of Library collection and 7 Library manuscript catalogues dating from 1745 up to the 1835 which give information about quantity and topical structures of Library collection.The Library is a historical and cultural symbol of the Enlightenment epoch. The Enlightenment and those particular concepts and cultural images pertaining to that epoch had their effect on the formation of Library’s fund. Its main features are as follow: comprehensive nature of the stock, predominance of French eighteenth century editions, presence of academic books and editions on orientalistics as well as works of the ideologues of the Enlightenment and new kinds of literature, which generated as a result of this movement – encyclopaedias, encyclopaedian dictionaries, almanacs, etc. Besides the universal nature of its stock books on history, social and political thought, fiction were dominating.The reconstruction of the history of Vyshnivetsky’s Library, the historical analysis of the provenances in its editions give us better understanding of the personality of its owners and in some cases their philanthropic activities, and a better ability to identify the role of this Library in the culture life of society in a certain epoch.

Abstract:
This article discusses the book Crises and Cycles in Economic Dictionaries and Encyclopaedias from a lexicographical point of view. Although the book is mainly written to people interested in the history of economics and the evolution of the two concepts mentioned in the title, its fresh approach places it directly, although incidentally, in the on-going discussion on the academic character of lexicography. After briefly presenting the main content of the book, the article discusses the relation between economics and lexicography from various angles. Finally, it points to some elements where the book may contribute to the enrichment of lexicographical theory.

Abstract:
In this study, we have explored the prefaces of monolingual English, monolingual French, and bilingual French-English dictionaries of the 17 th century. The monolingual works studied constitute the first of this kind to have been published. Over the course of this research, we have demonstrated that despite different lexicographic traditions, dictionary prefaces convey basically the same type of information, and address the same general issues. This study is divided into two main sections. In the first, we have provided historical information on the dictionaries, so as to illustrate the historical context in which they were published. In the second section, we have examined the prefaces themselves, first giving an overview of each text studied, and then providing a thematic analysis of the prefaces within each group as a whole, observing topics that are commonly treated among them, within the broader categories of dictionary content, lexicographic context, and linguistic context. Over the course of the research, we have established that though each text is unique, certain features are shared not only among the prefaces within one same category, but in fact across all three types of dictionary.

Abstract:
This study is a description of the dictionary use of one relatively homogeneous group of consultants: senior secondary school and university students learning French as a foreign language in New Zealand. The description has three components: (1) French teachers completed a questionnaire on their preferences for dictionaries for their students, their views on the relative merits of bilingual and monolingual dictionaries, the errors in their students' work which they attribute to dictionary use, the instruction they give on dictionary use, etc. (2) French students completed a questionnaire in which they gave a generalised description of their dictionary use, and reported on their dictionary preferences and dictionary reference skills, etc. (3) Two groups of students described their dictionary use in relation to specific tasks involving the comprehension and production of French. The results show that although few teachers produced lexicographical arguments for favouring bilingual or monolingual dictionaries or for recommending particular dictionaries, their influence on their students' dictionary use was significant. Students tended to buy the dictionary recommended and used those they owned more than those they could borrow. However, because students favoured bilingual dictionaries, the recommendation of a monolingual dictionary only, although heeded, also meant that the choice of a bilingual dictionary was left to the students who often chose a cheaper, smaller dictionary. On the other hand, students whose teachers recommended only bilingual dictionaries rarely used monolingual dictionaries. The students showed a strong preference for bilingual dictionaries for both the comprehension and production of French. Although they reported that their dictionary consultation was usually 'successful' and that they possessed adequate reference skills, this was not entirely supported by either the description of dictionary use for specific tasks ((3) above) or by the remarks of teachers concerning errors due to dictionary use (which were generally attributed to student 'carelessness'). Certainly, there was evidence that some students treated dictionaries as mere word-lists and failed to appreciate the wealth of material available in the better dictionaries. It is suggested that the remedy to this situation may lie with teachers. They could take more care in their recommendations of dictionaries for their students, basing their choice on lexicographical principles aimed at matching the reference needs and level of language acquisition of their students with the dictionary(ies) most able to fulfil these needs. They could encourage their students to recognise the strengths and weaknesses of their dictionaries, be they bilingual or monolingual. Overall, this study supports the findings of previous research on dictionary use among advanced foreign language learners in that it confirms the 'quantity' of dictionary use but questions its 'quality'.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The dissertation proposes a theoretical model of a dictionary which will include three languages, namely French, Yipunu and English in a specific field of medicine. The decision to compile such a dictionary was motivated by the desire of the Gabonese government to promote local languages. The necessity also exists for Gabon, like other African countries, to build a constant and total awareness among the communities on issues relating to health as a process for self education in an attempt to reduce the spreading of diseases of which medication is costly for the government. The compilation of the dictionary demands not only a dictionary plan but also a sound theoretical knowledge in lexicography as the discipline regarding dictionary compilation. The title of the dissertation alone requires that notions like theory, model, explanation, dictionary, medicine and terminology need to be explained in detail; this is done in Chapter 1. Chapter 2 focuses on the medical background in Gabon with specific attention to the medical infrastructures of the country. As AIDS and malaria are the most deadly pandemics in Gabon, special attention is given to them as well as the notion of health in both western and African ways. Chapter 3 discusses various theoretical issues of the lexicographic process, from data acquisition to its distribution, with particular attention to the interdisciplinary environment prevailing in Gabon. Chapter 4, the frame structure, contains metalexicographic structural components of the dictionary and their classification, where the central list as principal part of the dictionary is no longer the only venue for data accommodation within the dictionary but is complemented by a variety of outer texts. Attention is also given to the role of various functions such as the knowledge-orientated function and the communication-orientated function. Chapter 5 presents both the macro- and the microstructure as the core structures of the dictionary. It introduces a hybrid type of macrostructure with a thematic arrangement mingled with a straight alphabetical macrostructure. The different themes to be included in the FYEDMT are arranged alphabetically as topic of themes section. The lemmata included in each topic as article stretch are also alphabetically organized. The microstructure introduces a new type of article: the amalgamated dictionary article, in which three individual articles are combined. This new type of article gives the user three distinctive search areas with French being the language of lemmatisation and Yipunu the first target language and English the second. Chapter 6 develops the guide structure constituted by the access structure (to help the user by presenting various devices and different venues of data for better consultation), the addressing structure (help the user by means of data coordination) and the mediostructure (direct the user to specific slots of the dictionary).
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die proefskrif bied 'n teoretiese model van 'n woordeboek in 'n spesifieke veld van die medisyne wat in drie tale aangebied word, naamlik Frans, Yipunu en Engels. Die besluit vir die opstel van so 'n woordeboek is gemotiveer deur die wens van die Gaboenese regering om plaaslike tale te bevorder. Die noodsaaklikheid bestaan vir Gaboen, soos ook ander Afrikalande, om 'n konstante en totale bewustheid oor gesondheid tussen die gemeenskappe te vestig as 'n proses van selfopvoeding in 'n poging om die verspreiding van siektes wat die regering baie geld kos, te verminder. Die samestelling van die woordeboek vereis nie slegs 'n woordeboekplan nie maar ook 'n deeglike teoretiese kennis van leksikografie as die dissipline gerig op die samestelling van woordeboeke. Die titel van die proefskrif vereis reeds 'n presiese bekendstelling van begrippe soos teorie, modelle, verduidelikings, woordeboeke, medisyne en terminologie; dit is die doel van hoofstuk 1. Hoofstuk 2 fokus op die mediese agtergrond in Gaboen met spesiale aandag aan die mediese infrastrukture in die land. Aangesien MIV/VIGS en malaria dodelike pandemies in Gaboen is, word spesiale aandag hieraan gewy, asook aan gesondheidsgebruike in die Weste en Afrika. Hoofstuk 3 bespreek verskeie teoretiese aspekte van die leksikografiese proses, vanaf data-insameling tot dataverspreiding, met besondere aandag aan die interdissiplinêre omgewing wat tans in Gaboen bestaan. Hoofstuk 4, die raamstruktuur, bevat metaleksikografiese struktuur-komponente en die klassifikasie van die woordeboek, waar die sentrale lys die belanggrikste deel van die woordeboek is maar nie langer die enigste plek vir die data-aanbod nie maar wat aangevul word deur ’n verskeidenheid buitetekste. Aandag is ook gegee aan die rol van verskeie funksies, byvoorbeeld die kennis- en kommunikasie-gerigte funksie. Hoofstuk 5 bied beide die makro- en mikrostruktuur as die kernstrukture van die woordeboek. Dit stel 'n hibriede tipe makrostruktuur bekend met ’n tematiese ordening gemeng met 'n alfabetiese makrostruktuur. Die verskillende temas wat ingesluit word in die 'FYEDMT' word gerangskik volgens die opskrifte van die lemams. Die lemmas in elke onderwerp is ook alfabeties. Die mikrostruktuur stel in nuwe tipe artikel bekend: die geamalgameerde woordeboekartikel met 'n kombinasie van drie individuele artikels. Hierdie nuwe tipe artikel gee die gebruiker drie duidelike soek-gebiede met die lemmas in Frans, Yipunu die eerste doeltaal en Engels die tweede doeltaal. Abstract:
Scholarly attention to late eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century French art has focused on the importance that Johann Joachim Winckelmann attributed to the male nude figure in his definition of ideal beauty, and the impact of his work on debates over the 'beau idéal' in French art and art criticism. In contrast, Winckelmann's extensive interest in the detail of ancient costume, the folds of drapery, and the teleological and aesthetic significance that he ascribed to them, has been underplayed. The role played by costume and drapery as components of the 'beau idéal' in French art and aesthetics has also not been fully explored. This thesis examines the way in which costume and drapery formed an important component and embodiment of ideal beauty in the work of Winckelmann and in late eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century French artistic circles, providing new insights into the arguments over the meanings of Truth, Beauty and Nature in this period. The thesis proposes that ideal beauty in late eighteenth- and early nineteenth- century France was conveyed in works of art through the accurate rendering of costume and the expressive qualities of drapery in combination with the perfect form and contour of the nude body. The first part of the thesis sets up a proposition that costume and drapery formed part of the definition of ideal beauty in the work of Winckelmann. Highlighting the significance of Winckelmann's work on costume and drapery in French art theory, it demonstrates how the definition of ideal beauty in France also incorporated the accurate rendering of costume and the aesthetic impact of drapery. In demonstrating the significance of costume and drapery to both Winckelmann and French theorists it is proposed that the application of a meta-historical approach of costume and drapery to French art theory can provide new understandings and readings of the definition of ideal beauty, the hierarchy of the genres and the broader aesthetic concerns of late eighteenth- and early nineteenth- century French art. The second part of the thesis applies the proposed hermeneutic of costume and drapery to a small selection of theoretical work on the nature of ideal beauty and on a significant collection of Salon criticism. With this approach to the primary material this thesis demonstrates how French artists were able to express the 'beau idéal' within the traditional academic conventions and hierarchies, and negotiate the sense of public unease over the use of nudity in contemporary art.

Notre thèse porte sur l’histoire culturelle des dictionnaires bilingues français ↔ chinois. Notre but est d’examiner l’histoire des dictionnaires à travers les éditeurs, les lexicographes et les imprimeurs afin de trouver des caractéristiques du corpus sélectionné et d’établir une typologie des dictionnaires inventoriés. Cette étude apporte des éléments aux futurs travaux sur la lexicographie bilingue française et chinoise. Notre travail est divisé en deux parties : étude historique et étude métalexicographique. Dans l’analyse historique, un rappel de l’histoire de la Chine est donné dans un premier temps pour établir un panorama du contexte d’étude. Les chapitres suivants traitent de questions concernant l’apparition des dictionnaires bilingues en Chine et leur développement, les éditeurs et les imprimeurs, les lexicographes. Dans la partie métalexicographique, l’accent est mis sur les paratextes, les macrostructures, les nomenclatures et les microstructures. Our thesis deals with the cultural history of the French ↔ Chinese bilingual dictionaries. Our aim is to examine the history of dictionaries through their publishers, lexicographers and printers in order to find characteristics of the selected corpus and to establish a typology of the inventoried dictionaries. This study provides ideas for future work on French and Chinese bilingual lexicography. Our work is divided into two parts : historical study and metalexicographical study. In the historical analysis, a reminder of the chinese history is given at the outset to expose a panorama of the study’s context. The following chapters deal with questions concerning the emergence of bilingual dictionaries in China and their development, publishers and printers, and lexicographers. In the metalexicographic part, emphasis is placed on paratexts, macrostructures, nomenclatures and microstructures. Cette thèse porte sur la lexicographie bilingue, plus précisément entre l’islandais et le français, avec comme objectif de jeter les bases d’un nouveau dictionnaire islandais-français qui serait accessible en ligne. Pour cela, nous avons rédigé des articles de dictionnaire en nous appuyant sur une nouvelle base de données lexicographiques développée pour des dictionnaires bilingues en ligne avec l’islandais comme langue source (ISLEX). Nous nous concentrons sur les besoins des utilisateurs islandais voulant s’exprimer en français mais nous partons du principe que le dictionnaire devrait également servir aux francophones. À travers notre traitement lexicographique, nous portons une attention spéciale à la syntagmatique et au traitement des locutions plus ou moins figées dans un dictionnaire bilingue. En effet, nous estimons qu’un bon dictionnaire bilingue devrait accorder une importance particulière aux unités phraséologiques telles que les collocations et les locutions figées de sens figuré. Après avoir étudié le rôle et la structuration idéale des dictionnaires bilingues selon les différentes fonctions qu’ils peuvent avoir, celle de l’encodage et celle du décodage, nous passons ensuite à une discussion sur la phraséologie et l’importance des locutions figées et semi-figées dans les dictionnaires bilingues. Nous présentons, par la suite, la microstructure de nos articles ainsi que les outils et les ressources informatiques sur lesquels nous nous appuyons. Les résultats de notre réflexion sur l’élaboration d’un nouveau dictionnaire islandais-français sont présentés sous la forme d’articles, suivis de remarques et d’explications sur nos choix lexicographiques
This doctoral thesis on bilingual lexicography, and more precisely on lexicography between Icelandic and French, aims to lay the foundations for a new Icelandic-French dictionary that will be available on-line. To that purpose, we write entries for an Icelandic-French dictionary based on a new lexicographical database for Icelandic (ISLEX). The focus is on the needs of Icelandic users who wish to express themselves in French. However, it is clear that an Icelandic-French dictionary will also be useful for French speakers. Through our lexicographical treatment, we pay special attention to the syntagmatic analysis and to the presentation of more or less fixed phraseological units in a bilingual dictionary such as collocations and set phrases, since we consider that a good bilingual dictionary should take phraseological units into account. Having studied the role and the ideal structure of bilingual dictionaries according to the various functions that they can have, the encoding one and the decoding one, we then discuss phraseology and the importance of set phrases in bilingual dictionaries. The microstructure of our articles is then presented as well as the tools and resources on which we base our work. The outcome of our reflection on the writing of a new Icelandic-French dictionary is shown in the form of dictionary entries followed by remarks where an account is given of the way in which some lexicographical problems are tackled and our lexicographical choices are explained

Encyclopedias and dictionaries are the workhorses of culture; almost everyone consults them from time to time, but almost no one studies them. These useful compendia of knowledge serve their purpose for a few years and then are shelved or pulped. There are some notable exceptions to this rule, works whose significance transcends the time in which they appear. The most famous example of these is the Encyclopédie, ou dictionnaire raisonné of Diderot and d’Alembert. Denis Diderot (1713 – 1784) was one of the most prolific critics and essayists of the philosophes and a star of the French Enlightenment. His friend Jean Le Rond d’Alembert (1717 – 1783) was a mathematician, astronomer, and science writer. Together, they organized and edited the most ambitious work of their age. They planned it to be a universal compendium of all knowledge, organized in a coherent manner for the edification and enlightenment of the educated reading public. At the same time, they wanted it to be useful, practical, modern, and up-to-date. Despite its steep price, it enjoyed a huge popular success and became one of the best-selling works of the century. Yet it left a poor legacy. Its sequel, the Encyclopédie méthodique, was a com­mercial and scientific failure that few people bought at the time and hardly anyone has looked at since. Today, intellectuals pay lip service to the origi­nal Encyclopédie, but no one goes out and buys a new edition. Contrast this fate with that of two other encyclopedias that appeared a few years after Diderot and d’Alembert’s: the Encyclopaedia Britannica and the Brockhaus. The first edition of the Britannica, which appeared in 1771, was a modest work, hastily put together by a printer, an engraver, and a penurious scribbler. The German Conversations-Lexicon was the creation of the publishing entrepreneur Friedrich Arnold Brockhaus (1772–1823), who bought up an unfinished encyclopedia, hired writers to complete it, and issued the first edition in 1809 – 1811. These were no masterpieces of erudition or compendia of all knowledge, but simple reference works.
