The publication of the Dictionnaire universel of Furetière in 1690 ushered in the age of the encyclopaedic dictionary. This was a relatively short-lived phenomenon of little more than a hundred years, but one which pathed the way to modern encyclopaedias. Furetière having died in 1688, his successor was Basnage de Beauval, a protestant exile based in the United Provinces of the Netherlands. The article discusses the problem of reception of the description of Spain contained in the Etymologies by Isidore of Seville in Latin medieval encyclopaedias, on the background of the development of the medieval encyclopaedic trend. The etymological-geographical description of his homeland was placed by Isidore in book 14 of his work (14, 4, 28-30). This portrayal was “supplemented” in other places in the Etymologies, among other things, with an etymological-ethnographical aspect (9, 2, 109-114). ZusammenfassungThis paper addresses the questions posed in the SPP project “Translational Dimensions of French Encyclopaedism in the Age of Enlightenment, 1680–1800” (directors: Susanne Greilich/Regensburg, Hans-Jürgen Lüsebrink/Saarbrücken). The paper distinguishes two fundamental research perspectives in the analysis of encyclopaedic works in a translation context: first, the translation of encyclopaedic works into other languages, which often involved intercultural adaptation; and second, the use and function of translations, together with reflections on and criticism thereof, in encyclopaedic works. This second line of investigation will be pursued with reference to the articles on “Translation” in the Encyclopédie (1751–1772) and its Supplement (1777–1778) by Diderot and D'Alembert and the Encyclopédie Méthodique (1782–1832) as well as to the volumes of the Encyclopédie Méthodique on Philosophie moderne, edited and partly written by J.-A. Naigeon, especially the article on Hume.
