Abstract A study was conducted to determine if a safe upper service limit can be set for aircraft tires, based on an operation profile of the aircraft using the tires. The study consisted of three parts: development of a tire heating model, experimental confirmation, and determination of tire degradation as a function of time at temperature. Three operational profiles were identified: long, intermediate, and short haul; these stressed tires in different ways. The mathematical model, which calculated temperature as a function of time for various axial and lateral forces at different speeds, was developed and confirmed by experiment. It predicted the time at temperature of the hottest part of a tire that is exposed to the operating environment of the profiles. The impact of heating was found from a determination of ply adhesion as a function of time at temperature. The end of tire life was judged to occur when ply adhesion was degraded by 50%.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT There are currently many well-established applications for recycled rubber from end-of-life tires (ELT), but it is essential to investigate and seek new approaches to enhance the value of these products. Recent developments in new technologies and innovative recycling and devulcanization processes have opened up new perspectives for ELT crumb rubber. To promote the use of these products in newly added value applications, it is essential to develop and optimize methods that allow the characterization of parameters related to the ultimate properties of potential final applications. In this respect, a novel characterization methodology based on advanced 1H double-quantum (DQ) nuclear magnetic resonance experiments has been applied for the first time to quantify the key parameters that characterize the structure of ELT crumb rubber after diverse recycling processes: from simple mechanical grinding to complex devulcanization methods. This experimental approach enables the quantification of parameters that define the network structure of rubber, such as the nonelastic network defects (sol fraction, dangling chain ends, loops), the cross-link density, and the heterogeneity of the network, directly from rubber granulate and powder (without any additional sample preparation steps), overcoming most of the drawbacks and uncertainties that limit the application of traditional rubber characterization methods (e.g., equilibrium swelling experiments). By applying this experimental approach, it is possible to identify and quantify the actual technical limits for a complete selective devulcanization process of ELT crumb rubber.

Abstract:
It is estimated that around 600,000 tons of end-of-life tires are generated annually in Thailand. These waste tires will cause danger to the environment and human health if handled improperly. On the other hand, if managed with the proper technology, it will be transformed into valuable products. This research aims to evaluate the potential environmental impacts of a waste tire pyrolysis plant in Thailand by using the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) method. The functional unit is defined as 1 ton of products from the pyrolysis process of waste tires. The system boundary consists of a pre-treatment and pyrolysis process (gate-to-gate). The LCA calculations were carried out using licensed SimaPro 9.0 software. At the impact assessment step, the ReCiPe2016 method both Midpoint (problem-oriented) and Endpoint (damage-oriented) were applied, and 7 impact categories were selected (global warming, fine particulate matter formation, terrestrial acidification, freshwater eutrophication, terrestrial ecotoxicity, freshwater ecotoxicity, and fossil resource scarcity). If the avoided products from the pyrolysis process, including pyrolysis oil, steel wire, and carbon black were taken into account, the characterization results show that 3 impacts: global warming, terrestrial ecotoxicity, and fossil resource scarcity have a negative value. While the other impacts still have a positive value resulted mainly from electricity consumption. When considering weighting end-point results, it found that human health impact was a major contribution with a totally negative value of -0.947 Pt. As a summary, the outcomes confirm that the utilization of pyrolysis avoided products and the optimization of electricity consumption in the process has the potential to drives pyrolysis to become an environmentally effective technology for end-of-tires management.

Abstract:
Despite technological developments, modern methods for the disposal of end-of-life tires most often involve either their incineration in cement kilns or the destruction of tires in special landfills, demonstrating a lack of sustainable recycling of this valuable material. The fundamental role of recycling is evident, and the development of high-efficiency processes represents a crucial priority for the European market. Therefore, the investigation of end-of-life rubber processing methods is of high importance for both manufacturers and recyclers of rubber materials. In this paper, we review existing methods for processing of end-of-life tires, in order to obtain rubber crumb, which can later be used in the production of new industrial rubber goods and composites. We consider processes for separating end-of-life tires into fractions (in terms of types of materials) using chemical, mechanochemical, and mechanical methods to process the materials of used tires, in order to obtain crumb rubber of various fractions and chemical reactivities.

Abstract:
Automobile tires are one of the generated wastes from the road transport. According to an EU directive after 2006, end-of-life tires are subject to controlled collection and storage by traders. Direct incineration is unacceptable due to high levels of hazardous emissions. In addition to the high rate of depletion of natural resources, and in line with the “sustainable development” model, it is appropriate to create new advanced technologies for the proper utilization of natural resources through the reuse of end-of-life products. The pyrolysis technology of decomposition of raw materials is an innovative technology for production of fuels and metals from the disposal tires. This technology shows a reduced risk to public health and reduced levels of harmful substances in flue gases, has low operating costs and does not require separate waste collection. This paper focuses on the structural features of the pyrolysis installation for used automobile tires recycling. The installation has been implemented into production and has a capacity of 1 ton of end-of-life tires per hour. The result is 400 kg of liquid fuel, 400 kg of carbon and 100 kg of metal waste per hour.

Abstract:
The main objective of the paper was to provide more information about the influence of fibers coming from the end-of-life tires on the behaviour of concrete. Because of their untypical geometrical characteristic they are not eagerly applied as concrete reinforcement. Considering the amount of used tires, the management of this waste would he beneficial for the environment. The paper deals with the typical floor concrete reinforced with three dosages of fibers equal to: 30kg/m3, 40kg/m3 and 60kg/m3. The compressive and flexural mechanical parameters of RSFC were studied. The waste fibers with the shape dissimilar to manufactured fibers did not have a negative effect on the properties of the mix in a fresh state. The compressive strength was slightly affected by the fibers, meanwhile the pronounced influence of RSF on the post-peak flexural parameters was noted. Those parameters increased proportionally with the amount of fibers. However, the scatters in the flexural tests results were increasing with the fibers content. The investigations indicate that the fibers from the end-of-life tires could he applied as a concrete reinforcement. The values of flexural parameters which can be further applied to structural calculations were shown.

Abstract:
With a large amount of tyres being discarded every year, the question of how to manage the end-of-life tyres (ELTs) has become a serious issue. Thus this study identifies different driving forces for this management and the most possible scenarios for the future management of ELTs. The study also compares the business as usual model with a waste hierarchy model to explore the possibilities for optimizing management of ELTs through cascading. This study collects opinions about the driving forces of ELT management from 29 experts working in the area. Important driving forces identified were: price of substitute products, recycled materials’ market, environmental legislation, and technology. This study also surveys 23 experts in the tyre area about the most possible scenarios for ELTs in 2020. One of the more believed in futures was: “Due to increasingly limited fossil fuels and a rise of sustainability awareness, applications for ELTs are growing both in material and energy recycling.” This suggests that a shift toward an equal recycling situation of ELTs among material and energy might be likely to happen by 2020. Based on the most possible scenario for ELTs in 2020, a comparison between waste hierarchy model and business as usual model has been performed. The result shows that the (cascading) waste hierarchy model would likely create more environmental benefits than business as usual model. This is done though the saving and cycling of more materials from energy recovery into material recycling.

Abstract:

Due to the constant increase in population and the increase in vehicle production over the years, the amount of solid waste generated and deposited in the environment has grown considerably. The tire, which is one of these materials, when discarded in inappropriate locations can cause serious environmental problems and to the health of the population. Thus, in order to reduce the amount sent to the environment and to generate an appropriate production cycle, the tire rubber powder was used as reinforcement in a polypropylene matrix to be applied to the engine encapsulation of commercial vehicles. It is intended to provide a reduction of the weight of the piece and thus the vehicle, optimizing fuel consumption and reducing the emission of pollutants; also it ensures the minimization of noise pollution through the noise attenuation by composite. Acoustic analysis of transmission loss and external noise were carried out to verify whether the material complies with the limits specified by the resolutions. X-ray diffraction analysis enabled the identification and quantification of the different phases that comprise the material, besides evidencing the occurrence of polymorphism. By differential scanning calorimetry it was possible to verify the degree of crystallinity of the material and by thermogravimetry it was verified that the thermal decomposition of the composites occurred in two stages: the first in the temperature range between 300 ¿aC and 400 ¿aC and the second one between 400 ¿aC and 500 ¿aC. Tensile and flexural tests showed lower results than the virgin polymer, however, the impact test had higher values, as a function of thermoplasctic matrix tenacity.

Abstract:
Used tires have the potential for becoming popular in pollution control media used in stormwater applications including pervious pavement sub bases, green roof growth media, and upflow filters. Using tire crumb to decrease nutrients can minimize impacts on ecology while reducing the human footprint left by used tires. However, if tire crumb is not examined for toxicity, the ecological balance could unknowingly be disrupted. This research tested the acute toxicity of tire crumb in aquatic systems by finding the Lethal Concentration for 50% kill (LC50). Using an extreme tire crumb load, P. promelas (fathead minnow) were exposed to leachates created with tire crumb and several different types of water including distilled water, tap water, and detention pond water. For distilled and tap water, the addition of tire crumb increased the survival of P. promelas. For detention pond water, the addition of tire crumb decreased the survival of P. promelas, though only enough to find an LC50 for detention pond water influenced immediately by stormwater runoff. An LC50 was found when 100 percent tire crumb filtrate is prepared with 25 grams of tire crumb per liter of detention pond water collected directly after a storm. The LC50 found is resultant of a tire crumb load significantly higher than what can be expected in the environment. Based on this research, tire crumb is considered non-threatening to aquatic fish and safe to use with detention pond water.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The noise generated in the contact zone between a tire and a road can be amplified by horns constituted of the surfaces of the tire and the road. This study is devoted to the optimization and the design of tire treads and road textures for reducing the amplification of horn effect based on the sound cancellation. The tire treads and the road textures can be considered as two dimensional networks in the contact zone. The surfaces of the tire and the road can be seen as flanges. A model of flanged networks is established for the tire/road system, and multi-domain coupling methods are developed for the calculation of the acoustic fields around the flanged networks. With this model the reductions of the amplifications of horn effect by the networks can be estimated. Since the reductions are around the resonant frequencies of air inside the networks, simple numerical methods for estimating the resonant frequencies are developed. In order to design the networks to get wanted resonant frequencies, an optimization method based on genetic algorithms is proposed. The methods for estimating the resonant frequencies are validated with measurements. The optimization methods and the model of the flanged networks are also proved to be effective by the experiments. The wooden networks between a wooden cylinder and a sheet of plywood are built for the validation. A real tire on a sheet of plywood is also measured and calculated with the proposed methods. Last the tire treads are optimized with the optimization methods. Multiple reductions of the amplifications of horn effect can be seen and are estimated with the multi-domain coupling methods. The road brick dimension is also investigated in order to find the maximum reductions of the amplifications

Abstract:
An industry is constantly affected by its environment and the changes that occur within it. These environmental forces are the drivers of the industry’s evolution and throughout its life an industry undergoes irreversible transformations, which creates an industry life cycle. The competitive pressure on firms has increased the importance of developing competitive strategies throughout the industry’s life. This becomes especially important when the industry reaches the decline stage. There are different strategies that are suggested for firms to undertake in a declining industry. However, these strategies do not consider small and medium-sized enterprises, thus they might not be the most suitable for these firms to undertake. In addition, international activities have not been seen as a way to increase performance in a declining industry. The purpose of this study is therefore to fill this gap by investigating how small and medium-sized enterprises seek to increase their performance in a declining industry. To fulfil this purpose, we have conducted a qualitative case study of four SMEs currently operating in a declining industry. The empirical data was collected through interviews at each case company. The theoretical framework includes the theoretical concept of the industry life cycle, strategies specific for declining industries, theories regarding how firm chooses to compete, and different theories regarding international activities. The chapter ends with a theoretical synthesis that is developed from the theories presented earlier in the chapter. The empirical chapter presents the findings from the interviews with the case companies. In the analysis, the theoretical framework is connected to the empirical data, and is the basis for our conclusions. After conducting this study we can conclude that small and medium-sized enterprises seek to increase their performance by undertaking a niche strategy as their end-game strategy, compete with a differentiations strategy, and by a large scope of international markets, which enables them to shift their market focus from unbeneficial markets to more beneficial markets.

Abstract:
Based on six-years ethnographic research, this thesis provides an in-depth account of a contemporary British drug market. The study follows a group of twenty-five friends, termed The Lads, during their transition from late-adolescence (16-22) through to early adulthood (22-28). This was a critical stage in their life course; it was a time when many had begun advancing into the world of work and business entrepreneurship, in search of their chosen career. Yet it was during this time that two key developments occurred: bulk volumes of illicit drugs became available to The Lads through credit and the UK experienced several years of economic recession and stagnation. The economic constraints The Lads encountered during this time prompted many to become involved in the trafficking of illegal drugs. Though their entry into the markets was not necessarily motivated out of absolute need or poverty, the experience of low-paying salaries, the loss of work and income, and the inability to secure legitimate investment capital, all made drug dealing an alluring source of untaxed revenue, available as and when needed. This study assesses the practices of this cohort of closed-market drug dealers, who capitalised on their expansive social networks as a means of trafficking a variety of illegal substances at the time of these two developments. During the course of the research their involvement came to span several stages of the supply chain, including: mid-level wholesale brokerage, import/export, wholesale, and retail (i.e. to the end-users). The study addresses various structural elements of their trade, including drug purchasing and selling, the assessment and mitigation of risks in relation to law enforcement, and the use of informal credit (i.e. ‘fronting’) as one of the principle facilitating factors of The Lads’ various trade networks. A variety of data collection methods were employed over many years to garner a depth of understanding and appreciation difficult to achieve in the study of active offenders. The data comprises of life narratives, observations, interview data and economic data. The findings offer some new insight into: the kinds of people who deal drugs; what characteristics they share; how they function as traders; what motivates them to either enter or exit the trade, and what social structures influence their offending careers? These young men were not the archetypal drug dealer: they were neither predatory nor territorial. They were ambitious and hard working. Drug dealing was simply a shortcut to the lifestyle they aspired to; it was a source of capital; a means of funding their studies; a ‘means to an end’. To these young men, drug dealing was just another form of work: a bad job that paid a good salary.

Abstract:
Justice Blackmun’s 1994 decision to “tinker with the machinery of death” no more brings into focus the problem of an instantaneous death penalty that was raised by Eighth Amendment objections to the firing squad and electric chair at the end of the nineteenth century. A review of American death penalty jurisprudence reveals that the instant is not the only temporal question raised: the doctrine of “evolving standards” presumes a speed of evolution that is impossible to determine and compares different evolutions among electorates, legislatures, and countries within the international community. By examining those questions in the context of Blackmun’s Callins dissent I argue that what the machinery of death reveals above all is a concept of technological time.

Abstract:
Gas turbine and combined cycle power plants are typically designed for a service life of over 30 years. If operated at base load in continuous duty, the gas turbine hot-gas-path components for example in a combined-cycle power plant need repair and replacement according to the maintenance program several times during plant life. Most of the hot components would reach the end of their service life, e.g. 100,000 equivalent operating hours (EOH), after 10 to 12 years. As this is well before the end of the overall plant service life defined in the power plant concept, such plant applications therefore necessitate life extension measures enabling to continuing operation beyond 100,000 EOH. This paper presents strategic options for hot-gas-path component life entension.

Abstract:
Volatile markets, tough customer expectations, and short product life cycles are just some of the challenges the automotive industry has to deal with. In this context, important quality features are expressed as key product characteristics (KPC). The process of defining and reviewing such KPCs concerns each department of an automobile company. This paper presents a method for an intersubjective problem understanding of inter-divisional working groups and a common product KPC’s definition. The scientific contribution lies in the field of quality assessment for the premium-segment automotive industry, while the novelty can be found in providing the opportunity to take quality decisions based on variation simulations and on high-end-visualizations. The proposed method aims to realize and implement a higher premium quality standard and, at the same time, to reduce the number of physical prototypes, to shorten development times and to facilitate an intersubjective problem understanding. In relation to the developed method, an industrial application and its results are presented.

Abstract:
Since first appearing at the end of 2019, the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has spread at a pace and scale not seen before. On 11 March 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared COVID-19 a pandemic. A rapid response was called for, and actors across the globe worked quickly to develop sets of preventative measures to contain the disease. One mode of transmission identified early on in the crisis was via surfaces and objects (fomites) (Howard et al. 2020). To combat this, hand hygiene was put forward as a key preventative measure and heralded as ‘the first line of defence against the disease’ (World Bank 2020). What followed was an unprecedented global focus on handwashing with soap. Health messages on how germs spread, the critical times at which hands should be washed, and methods for correct handwashing were shared (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention 2020). Political leaders around the world promoted handwashing and urged people to adopt the practice to protect against the coronavirus. The primary and secondary impacts of COVID-19 have affected people and industries in a variety of different ways. For the WASH sector, the centring of handwashing in the pandemic response has led to a sudden spike in hygiene activity. This SLH Rapid Topic Review takes stock of some of the cross-cutting challenges the sector has been facing during this period and explores the adaptations that have been made in response. It then looks forwards, thinking through what lies ahead for the sector, and considers the learning priorities for the next steps.
