Abstract:

When Gretchen Schafft approached PA about an edited issue commemorating the work of Miki Crespi in creating and nurturing the Applied Ethnology Program of the NPS, it was with a long, well thought out proposal. I listened to it, smiling on my end of the phone, because unbeknownst to Gretchen she was talking to a Park Service veteran. But unlike the authors of these articles who entered into their relationship with NPS, ethnography, and Muriel Crespi as credentialed professionals, I was one of the rank and file, a PHD'd, GS3 seasonal ranger, working during the summer for the love of it.

Abstract:
Xanthomonas citri (synonym = Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. citri) (3) has been reported in several countries in Africa (1) but not Somalia. During 2006 and 2007, hyperplasia-type lesions, often surrounded by a water-soaked margin and yellow halo, typical of citrus canker caused by X. citri were found on 8- to 10-year-old lime (Citrus limetta) and grapefruit (Citrus × paradisi Macfed.) trees in northern and southern Somalia, respectively. Ten leaf samples diagnosed presumptively as citrus canker by Xac ImmunoStrip test kits (Agdia, Elkhart, IN) were mailed to the USDA Foreign Disease-Weed Science Research Unit at Ft. Detrick, MD. To confirm the identification of X. citri, isolations were made from several lesions from each sample onto yeast-dextrose-CaCO3 (YDC) agar (2). Yellow, xanthomonad-like mucoid, convex colonies were purified and stored on YDC slants. Phenotypic tests were done as described (2), and real-time PCR assays were done using primers XCit8F and XCit5R with probe XCitP2 (N. W. Schaad, unpublished). For pathogenicity tests, cultures were grown overnight in liquid nutrient broth-yeast (4) medium adjusted to contain 1 × 105 CFU/ml and inoculated into leaves of lime seedlings with the blunt end of a 2-ml syringe. After 21 to 30 days in a lighted dew chamber (Model I-60DLM; Percival Scientific, Inc. Perry, IA) at 30/23°C day/night, symptoms were recorded. Cultures of sample S-1 (northern Somalia) from lime were phenotypically atypical of X. citri, PCR negative, and nonpathogenic. However, cultures of samples 3 to 7 (southern Somalia) from grapefruit were typical of X. citri and PCR positive; cultures 3 and 4 were tested for pathogenicity and produced erumpent lesions on lime. Isolations onto YDC agar resulted in typical mucoid, convex, yellow, PCR-positive colonies. To our knowledge, this is the first report of X. citri on citrus plants in Somalia. Strains S3 and S4 have been deposited in ICPB at Ft. Detrick, MD as ICPB 11650 and 11651, respectively. References: (1) J. F. Bradbury. Guide to Plant Pathogenic Bacteria. Abstract:

Abstract:
The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of Cervitec Plus® on the level of mutans streptococcus (SM) and lactobacillus (LB) colonies and the development of white spot lesions (WSLs) in patients with fixed orthodontic appliances. Informed consent was obtained from 32 volunteers (age 16.5 ± 2.75 years). At baseline, levels of the bacterial colonies were determined in saliva and plaque using a chairside test (CRT Bacteria, Ivoclar-Vivadent, Schaan, Liechtenstein), and the number of WSLs was registered. After placing the fixed appliance, Cervitec Plus® or placebo varnishes (Ivoclar-Vivadent, Schaan, Liechtenstein) were applied monthly around the brackets and tubes, randomly in the right or left (test and placebo) quadrants of the same dental arch. SM and LB colonies in saliva and the SM colonies in plaque were determined on 11–21, 13–23, 15–25, and 16–26 teeth monthly over a 6-month period. At the sixth month, the number of new WSLs was determined. By the end of the study, compared with baseline, the ratio of saliva samples belonging to the low-risk category was significantly higher (p ≤ 0.01) from the 2nd month regarding the SM (76 vs. 52%) and LB (69 vs. 52%); reduction of SM in plaque was significantly greater on the test than placebo sides (6.69 ± 1.71 and 4.45 ± 1.60, respectively; p ≤ 0.01). The mean number of new WSLs was significantly lower in the test (0.06 ± 1.60) than in the placebo quadrants (1.13 ± 1.50, p ≤ 0.01). Conclusion: Monthly use of Cervitec Plus® could result in a significant improvement in oral health of orthodontic patients.

Abstract:
The term ‘soundscape’, as coined by the Canadian composer R. Murray Schafer at the end of the 1960s, refers to the part of the acoustic environment that is perceivable by humans. This study attempts to reconstruct roughly the Eleusinian ‘soundscape’ (the words and the sounds made and heard, and those others who remained unheard) as participants in the Great Mysteries of the two Goddesses may have perceived it in the Classical and post-Classical periods. Unlike other mystery cults (e.g. the Cult of Cybele and Attis) whose soundscapes have been meticulously investigated, the soundscape of Eleusis has received relatively little attention, since the visual aspect of the Megala Mysteria of Demeter and Kore has for decades monopolised the scholarly attention. This study aims at putting things right on this front, and simultaneously look closely at the relational dynamic of the acoustic segment of Eleusis as it can be surmised from the work of well-known orators and philosophers of the first and second centuries ce.

Abstract:
Drill chatter degrades hole roundness, hole size, and tool life. This wastes time and money in tools, scrap, and hole rework. Chatter prediction in milling and turning has shown significant benefit to industry; however, researchers have been unable to accurately predict chatter in drilling applications. In the past, the drill, including the chisel edge, was modeled as either a fixed-fixed or fixed-pinned beam (Tekinalp, O., and Ulsoy, A. G., 1989, “Modeling and Finite Element Analysis of Drill Bit Vibrations,” ASME J. Eng. Indust. 111, pp. 148–154), but more recent research (Dilley, D. N., Bayly, P. V., and Schaut, A. J., 2005, “Effects of the Chisel Edge on the Chatter Frequency in Drilling,” J. Sound Vib., 281, pp. 423–428) has shown that a fixed-embedded model using springs improves frequency matching. The effects of the drill margins on dynamics have not been studied. The fixed-fixed or fixed-pinned model will be shown to be inappropriate for modeling the effects of margin engagement, while the spring-end boundary condition can better approximate the frequency increase observed experimentally as the drill margins engage deeper into the hole. In addition, the shifted frequency is well below the frequency found from an analytical fixed-fixed or fixed-pinned beam. Evidence that the margins cause the frequency shift is seen in three-dimensional waterfall plots that show this shift for pilot hole drilling (in which the margins are engaged), but not for tube drilling (in which margins are not engaged).

Abstract:

Full text
Abstract:
Incubation strategies of extinct organisms are largely speculative. Most inferences of nesting behavior are based on comparison with closely related extant taxa. To date the most useful evidence for support of a particular incubation strategy includes water vapor conductance (determined from fossil eggshell) and sedimentary structures, associated with eggs or eggshell, that are interpreted as fossil nests. One such sedimentary structure (MOR 3062) from the Upper Cretaceous Two Medicine Formation of Montana, is described along with the microstructure of the associated eggs and eggshell (oospecies Continuoolithus canadensis). The green nest trace truncates red mudstone and differs in sedimentary attributes. Geochemical analysis indicates that the host substrate was highly oxidized compared to the in-filled nesting structure. This is probably due to presence of decaying vegetative debris within the structure. A Continuoolithus canadensis egg removed from MOR 3062, along with Continuoolithus canadensis eggs from the nearby site TM-006, have a water vapor conductance value of 119 mgH ²O/ (day Torr). This equates to a 4.1 times greater mean water vapor conductance in Continuoolithus canadensis than a bird egg of the same mass. American alligator (Alligator mississippensis) eggs have a water vapor conductance rate 4.2 times greater than a bird egg of the same mass. Strong similarities exist between relative water vapor conductance of Continuoolithus canadensis and modern alligators. In addition, characteristics of MOR 3062 suggest the eggs were buried in a mixture of sediment and vegetative debris: therefore, I conclude that Continuoolithus Canadensis eggs were incubated underground, possibly with the aid of heat produced by rotting vegetation.

Abstract:
Classical biological control of weeds is generally considered an effective, safe, and cost effective tool for controlling widespread weeds in natural areas. However, only 60% of releases have become established and, of those, only 50% have led to control. Therefore, understanding the impacts of agents on target weeds across spatial scales, at different insect densities, and over time can give biological control practitioners the knowledge necessary to improve establishment and success rates. My studies characterized the impacts the biological control agent, Mecinus janthinus, on the rangeland weed Dalmatian toadflax (Linaria dalmatica) at individual plant and plant population scales. Individual plant studies were conducted in a garden and replicated on plants growing in the field, to measure the impact of agents on plant growth and primary physiology. The population study followed operational scale releases of M. janthinus for three to four years using intensive monitoring to characterize L. dalmatica cover, density, and population structure, and weevil establishment and population increase. I also evaluated which parameters were most important to measure to determine establishment and success. In the common garden experiment, M. janthinus injury was found to reduce relative plant growth, as well as root, stem, and reproductive biomass at medium and high adult densities. Trends of reduced photosynthetic, conductance, or transpiration rates with increasing M. janthinus density were observed. In the field experiment, M. janthinus injury led to reduced growth. Gas exchange rates decreased over the season and were lower in plants exposed to high larval and adult herbivore pressure. Field monitoring indicated successful M. janthinus establishment at releases across a range of elevations, slopes, and geographic locations, though high rates of overwintering mortality were observed at all sites. Linaria dalmatica cover was variable within watersheds and patches, and also differed between watersheds. Abundance of L. dalmatica decreased over time based on cover measurements, but did not change over time with respect to density. The proportion of mature L. dalmatica stems decreased over time. The majority of changes in L. dalmatica over time were the same in release and control transects and could not be attributed to M. janthinus.

Abstract:
Abstract: Conducting polymers of the Thiophene-Schiff Bases emerge as alternative materials to obtain modified electrodes with potential applications in chemical sensors due to the excellent conductive chelating properties conferred by the poly-thiophene and the Schiff Bases, respectively. In this work, the complex Thiophene-Salen was synthesized and characterized by UV-Vis and FTIR, then monomers complex metals8thiophene8Schiff were synthesized with the complexation of cations of transition metals such as Ni2+, Cu2+, VO2+, Fe3+, Ru3+ and Ce4+ and again characterized by UV-Vis and FTIR to confirm the formation of monomer-metal complexes with thiophene-Schiff. Polymer films of these complexes were obtained by anodic electropolymerization technique and were characterized electrochemically by cyclic voltammetry in aqueous solution. There was the influence of different experimental variables such as solvent, supporting electrolyte, potential scan range, potential scan rate, monomer concentration and number of cycles during the electropolymerization. The conductive substrates used in the electropolymerization were platinum electrode and a glassy carbon electrode, demonstrating the influence of the conductive substrate in the electropolymerization and was found that the platinum electrode showed a higher electron transfer efficiency when compared to the carbon electrode vitreous due to amorphous nature of glassy carbon for these polymer films studied. The platinum modified electrodes with these polymer films were also used to study their electrochemical properties for the detection of analytes of analytical interest as L-dopa, dithionite, pyridoxine, sulphite, nitrite, L-thyroxine and gallic acid presented higher apllication as chemical sensors for these analytes.

Abstract:
Chapter 2 gave an overview of the varieties of conceptual engineering. This chapter shows how the tools of the Austerity Framework enable us gain a greater understanding of the different kinds of conceptual engineering. Some engineers (such as Haslanger and Clark and Chalmers) are concerned with improving the way we speak about a topic. Others, most notably Scharp, are concerned with concepts that they call inconsistent. It is argued that we think of these concepts as lacking an adequate metasemantic base. Finally, there are engineers who seek to exploit lexical effects of certain words, and so are happy to change words’ meanings even if that means changing topic. The chapter goes on to consider the connections between these three kinds of conceptual engineering, and ends by considering some conservative and some radical features of the Austerity Framework.

Abstract:
But perhaps George Scharf would not have wanted us to end with him at rest. He was, after all– and this is a modern term for an old-fashioned value– a hard worker. This was, for both of us, another point of identification with Scharf, although we suspect he would be as puzzled by the kind of work we do as we sometimes were by his professional activities. By the end of our work on and with him, however, we realised that our jobs–Scharf’s job and our own– had something in common and that this commonality might produce a final attempt at an identity term to add to bachelor, diner, sketcher, fat man, extra man and the other categories we tried out for Scharf. It took us arguably too long to realise that Scharf, too, was an archival researcher subject to the exigencies and fantasies of the archive. That realisation came to us after Helena’s trip to the Laing archive at the University of Edinburgh, whose holdings include letters from Scharf to David Laing, librarian of the Signet Library in Edinburgh and member of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland.

Abstract:
Protein glycation is the random, nonenzymatic reaction of sugar and protein induced by diabetes and ageing; this process is quite different from glycosylation mediated by the enzymatic reactions catalysed by glycosyltransferases. Schiff bases form advanced glycation end products (AGEs) via intermediates, such as Amadori compounds. Although these AGEs form various molecular species, only a few of their structures have been determined. AGEs bind to different AGE receptors on the cell membrane and transmit signals to the cell. Signal transduction via the receptor of AGEs produces reactive oxygen species in cells, and oxidative stress is responsible for the onset of diabetic complications. This chapter introduces the molecular mechanisms of disease onset due to oxidative stress, including reactive oxygen species, caused by AGEs generated by protein glycation in a hyperglycaemic environment.

Abstract:
Twin–twin transfusion is the major cause of mortality and morbidity in monochorionic twins. Its pathogenesis has been gradually elucidated over the last three centuries. There was a long-lasting controversy among obstetricians regarding the existence of placental anastomoses and whether or not to tie the placental end of the firstborn infant’s cord. However, a twin pregnancy practically never could be ruled out. Stalpart van der Wiel described a twin–twin vessel connection in 1687. Studies on interfetal anastomoses by injecting dyes into placental vessels were published by Smellie in 1752, Osiander in 1781, and Brachet in 1821. Different types of anastomoses, and their associated fetal disorders were classified by Schatz in a series of papers in the late 19th century. With the advent of ultrasound and laser techniques, prenatal diagnosis and treatment became available in the last decade of the 20th century.

Abstract:
This paper discusses a computer-aided musical analysis methodology anchored on psychoacoustics audio descriptors. The musicological aim is to analyze compositions centered on timbre manipulations that explore sound masses and granular synthesis as their builders. Our approach utilizes two psychoacoustics models: 1) Critical Bandwidths and 2) Loudness, and two spectral features extractors: 1) Centroid and 2) Spectral Spread. A review of the literature, contextualizing the state-of-art of audio descriptors, is followed by a definition of the musicological context guiding our analysis and discussions. Further, we present results on a comparative analysis of two acousmatic pieces: Schall (1995) of Horacio Vaggione and Asperezas (2018) of Micael Antunes. As electroacoustic works, there are no scores, therefore, segmentation and the subsequent musical analysis is an important issue to be solved. Consequently, the article ends discussing the methodological implication of the computational musicology addressed here.

Abstract:
Abstract Human’s motion and its mechanisms had become interesting in the last years, where the medecine’s field search for rehabilitation methods for handicapped persons. Other fields, like sport sciences, professional or military world, search to distinguish profiles and ways to train them with specific purposes. Besides, recent findings in neuroscience try to describe these mechanisms from an organic point of view. Until now, different researchs had given a model about control motor that describes how the union between the senses’s information allows adaptable movements. One of this sense is the proprioception, the sense which has a quite big factor in the orientation and position of the body, its members and joints. For this reason, research for new strategies to explore proprioception and improve the theories of human motion could be done by three different vias. At first, the sense is analysed in a case-study where three groups of persons are compared in a controlled enviroment with three experimental tasks. The subjects belong to each group by the kind of sport they do: sedentary, normal sportsmen (e.g. athletics, swimming) and martial sportmen (e.g. karate, judo). They are compared thinking about the following hypothesis: “Martial Sportmen have a better proprioception than of the other groups’s subjects: It could be due to the type of exercises they do in their sports as empirically, a contact sportsman shows significantly superior motor skills to the members of the other two groups. The second via are records from encephalogram (EEG) while the experimental tasks are doing. These records are analised a posteriori with a set of processing algorithms to extract characteristics about brain’s activity of the proprioception and motion control. Finally , the study tries to integrate graphic tools to make easy to understand final scientific results which allow us to explore the brain activity of the subjects through easy interfaces (e.g. space-time events, activity intensity, connectivity, specific neural netwoks or anormal activity). In the future, this application could be a complement to assist doctors, researchers, sports center specialists and anyone who must improve the health and movements of handicapped persons.
