Abstract:
With species increasingly becoming imperiled due to anthropogenic activities, conservation practitioners are tasked with determining conservation priorities in order to make the best use of limited resources. The United States’ Endangered Species Act (ESA) has two listing statuses into which imperiled species are placed to receive protections: Threatened or Endangered. In the first chapter, our objective was to identify differences between Threatened and Endangered species beyond what is outlined in their ESA definitions. To our knowledge, this is the first study to compare listing status for

The U.S. Endangered Species Act (U.S. ESA) is one of the oldest pieces of legislation to protect endangered species. The bodies responsible for administering the U.S. ESA have published species Biennial Recovery Statuses (BRSs) in Reports to Congress on the Status of Endangered and Threatened Species. We found that expert assessments of species recovery trends match BRSs reasonably well; however, there appears to be a weak relationship between the BRSs and available data tracking species abundance and range trends. We aimed to establish whether the recovery trends of species examined were dete

The Endangered Species Act of 1973 (ESA) reflects society's concern over the rate of species extinction and aims to halt or reverse this trend. Several policies of the ESA protect listed species over resource development projects. Due to this protection, several listed species have recently experienced a recovery. Two have been removed, or delisted, from the federal Endangered Species list. Once a recovered species becomes delisted, the majority of these protections are removed. Abstract:
Biological invasions threaten biodiversity globally, and degraded ecosystems increase the potential for invaders to compete with threatened native populations. In natural systems, niche partitioning minimizes interspecific competition, but introduced species may alter expected outcomes by competing with ecologically similar species for scarce resources. Where food production is highly variable, coexistence of native and invasive competitors may depend on dietary niche flexibility. Territorial species under invasion face additional challenges to maintain economically defendable territories.

Abstract The amount and distribution of genetic diversity are likely to affect the evolutionary potential of a species. When feasible and cost-effective policies for management and monitoring of endangered populations or species are planned, knowledge of the spatial genetic structure and the type of population dynamics is of great concern. In this thesis the genetic diversity and population structures of two endangered arctic plant species was examined on different geographical scales in Northern Europe. The genetic analyses revealed low levels of genetic variation and the presence of population genetic differentiation independent of the spatial scale. Low levels of seed-mediated gene flow, possibly linked to low seedling recruitment, is the likely cause of the low levels of gene f

Earlier studies have found that endangered species recovery is only weakly associated with the tools enabled by the U.S. Endangered Species Act (ESA). With habitat loss often cited as a leading cause of species declines, we tested whether the recovery of ESA-listed species is instead associated with the protection of critical habitat (CH) by protected areas. We tested the relationship for 299 species using recovery indices derived from the biennial status reports to Congress (1990-2010), as well as NatureServe and IUCN population status data. Fire is a natural component of, and serves as a tool for, the restoration of forested ecosystems worldwide; however, disturbance due to fire also has been implicated in the proliferation of invasive species. How these fires affect occupancy and use of the forest by wildlife is of great concern, in particular, the differential response of non-native and native species. In the North American Southwest, prior to European settlement, frequent wildfires helped to maintain forest structure. Using four AFLP markers and seven polymorphic microsatellite loci, we examined the genetic structure of the rare and endangered Spiranthes parksii Correll (Orchidaceae). Spiranthes parksii is not distinguishable from sympatric S. cernua (L.) Rich based on these data, though low levels of polymorphisms exist within both. These low levels of genetic diversity are likely a result of high levels of agamospermic reproduction through adventitious embryony. These results suggest that both S. parksii, as well as the sympatric, open flower form of S. cernua, are products of the more widely distributed

Abstract:
The Blue Mountains Water Skink (Eulamprus leuraensis), restricted to the endangered habitat of highland peat-swamps, is known from fewer than 60 isolated sites in the Blue Mountains region of south-eastern Australia. The sole endemic vertebrate of the region, this scincid lizard is imperilled by many threats. From three years of field surveys, I show that E. leuraensis live almost exclusively within swamps, with very few inhabiting the swamp margins and none recorded in the surrounding woodland. Paradoxically, this endangered species appears to be the most abundant vertebrate in these swamps.
