Abstract:
AbstractThe Khotanese and Sogdian genitive plural endings cannot be satisfactorily explained from the traditionally posited ending *-nām. Instead, Khotanese -nu and Sogdian -nw point to *-nam. Instead of assuming a special rule that shortens the expected *-nām to *-nam, it is argued that the evidence from East Iranian is to be taken at face value. A short ending *-om can be reconstructed for Proto-Indo-European as well and the East Iranian reflexes of a short ending are probably an archaism.

Abstract:
The domination of a happy narrative frame has gradually broadened to include different kinds of endings, but a positive resolution is still often expected. Do narratives need an optimistic ending? Do hopeful endings begin to loose their credibility? Should we buy into the Hollywood scripts presenting an ending that solves or completes the plot by the end of its telling? Endings point to a potential future, and culturally we have been conditioned to write this future optimistically. Not everything ends well, however. Sometimes, things just end. Narrative conclusions can be optimistic and have catharsis, but not end with a “happily ever after” (Purnell, 2013).

Abstract:
This study aimed to elucidate the intramuscular distribution pattern of the medial plantar nerve and determine its motor nerve ending territories within the abductor hallucis muscle using modified Sihler’s staining and external anatomical landmarks. The study included 40 specimens of the abductor hallucis muscle (13 men and seven women) from formalin-fixed (ten cadavers) and fresh cadavers (ten cadavers), with a mean age of 77.6 years. The entry point of the medial plantar nerve into the muscle was examined, followed by Sihler’s staining to analyze the intramuscular distribution pattern and motor nerve ending location within the abductor hallucis muscle. Ultrasound- and palpation-guided injections were performed to verify the applicability of motor nerve ending location-based injections. The areas with the highest concentrations of nerve entry points and nerve endings were identified in the central portion of the muscle. Ultrasound- and palpation-guided injections were safely positioned near the densest nerve ending region of the muscle. These detailed anatomical data and injection methods would be beneficial for proceeding with safe and effective injection treatments using various analgesic agents to alleviate abductor hallucis muscle-associated pain disorders.

Abstract:
Abstract One of the typical sandwich ending is tapered transition to a solid laminate, which causes significant stress distribution changes. The reviewed articles show that tapered area causes increase in the shear stress in the core, increase of the axial forces in the facesheets and local bending at the fork point, at points of the tapering angle change, and at ply drop positions. Most of the studies gave attention to the endings without reinforcing. During Erasmus+ internship at KTH 2D model of the tapered ending with reinforcing plies, various geometry and resin filler in the core tip was investigated to see the influence on the stress distribution. It was found that tension load case is not as critical as bending load case. Increasing of the solid laminate thickness, adding plies and inserting a short resin or adhesive filler into the core tip area lead to significant stress reduction, whereas in the transition point, from tapering to constant thickness sandwich, increasing radius is more efficient than reinforcing plies in regard to reduce stress concentration.

Abstract:
Vaccine-preventable diseases (VPD) are responsible for a significant portion of mortality across the life course in both low-income countries and in medium- and high-income countries. Yet, countries are consistently below the adult influenza vaccination targets, with rates in recent times even falling in some areas. (1) The study Towards Ending Immunization Inequity seeks to understand the various factors that contribute to the accessibility and effectiveness of vaccine-related messages and campaigns including the effects of social determinants, with the knowledge that these opportunities for communication represent a unique policy lever to improving uptake rates of vaccination in the most at-risk communities. (2) To address this knowledge gap, a 3-phase mixed-methods study was conducted including a preliminary scan of existing vaccine schedules and NITAG recommendations, focus groups and a cross-sectional survey. (3) Study results indicated that social determinants play a key role in an individual’s knowledge of vaccine-related information including types of vaccines available, vaccination gateways, vaccine recommendations and vaccine safety. (4) However, knowing that social determinants can influence uptake rates does not readily create opportunities and entry points for governments to implement tangible actions. An accessible entry point to reducing and ending immunization inequity is through changes in public health messaging to reach those who are currently unreachable.

Abstract:
Marine adaptive sampling is a technique that makes full use of limited observation resources by selecting the optimal positions. Recently, the design of an adaptive sampling scheme based on a mobile platform has become a research hotspot. However, adaptive sampling system involves multiple subsystems, and the attributes as well as tasks are always different, which may lead to different sampling scenarios. A great deal of research has been conducted for specific situations, especially with fixed starting and ending points. However, systematic design and simulation experiments under various circumstances are still lacking. How to design the adaptive observation system, so as to cope with the observation task under different scenarios, is still a problem worth studying. Aiming to solve this problem, we designed a systematic scheme design process. The process includes setting up and verifying the background field, adopting the hierarchical optimization framework to adapt to different circumstances, and variable adjustments for twin frames. The needs covered in this paper include not having a fixed starting point and ending point, only having a fixed starting point, having a fixed starting point and ending point, increasing sampling coverage, and simple obstacle avoidance. Finally, the relevant conclusions are applied to the multi-platform simultaneous observation scenario. It provides a systematic flow pattern for designing adaptive sampling scheme of mobile platforms.

Abstract:
The second inflexional Paradigm of the passato remoto (-ei/-etti): The current preferences of Italian speakers regarding the choice of alternative inflected forms The Italian preterite (passato remoto, PR) is characterized by a complex inflexional morphology, both from the diachronic and the synchronic point of view. It is also the only verb tense that, according to the grammars, has two series of interchangeable endings ‒ for regular verbs ending in -ere: -ei, -é, -erono versus -etti, -ette, -ettero. This article is part of a wider research on the effective use of PR in contemporary Italian and shows what the current preferences are in the selection of this two series of endings amongst native Italian speakers. I will discuss the results of a questionnaire in which 3675 informants participated, and in particular: a) criteria used for the choice of the analyzed verbs, b) construction of the questionnaire, c) data processing. The data will show that: 1) there are a very small number of verbs that prefer the endings -ei, 2) all verbs ending in -stere require the endings -etti, and 3) there is a clear correspondence between the responses given to the questionnaire and the occurrences of the PR forms in the corpora.

Full text
Abstract:
In this study, we improve the matching accuracy of underwater gravity matching navigation. Firstly, the Iterative Optimal Annulus Point (IOAP) method with a novel grid topology is proposed for breaking through the inherent grid structure limit of the canonical gravity matching algorithm and enhancing its underwater gravity matching accuracy. The theory of IOAP is as follows: (1) small-annulus matching and positioning mechanism on the tracking starting point is developed by employing the starting point and drift error of the INS (Inertial Navigation System), the fixed rotation angle, etc. The optimal matching location of the starting point is obtained by matching and comparing the matched points in this small-annulus grid, which contributes to heightening the initial-position error insensitivity of the algorithms. (2) Variable-angle three-layer annulus matching and positioning mechanisms on the tracking ending point were constructed by using the optimal matching location of the starting point and combining the tracking direction-and-distance information of the INS and the cumulative drift error, etc. It is used to generate the annulus matching points with the ring-type grid topology. (3) The optimal matching position of the ending point in this annulus is obtained by iteratively calculating the evaluation index value of the matching points and following the evaluation index optimal rule. Secondly, we comprehensively consider the main performance evaluation indexes of the underwater gravity matching algorithms, such as the statistical indicators of the matching accuracy, the average matching time and the matching success rate, and take them as a basis of the pros and cons of the matching analysis. Furthermore, under conditions that include different scale searching regions or different reference-angle ring radii, the statistical results verify that the IOAP had a different matching ability and better robustness. Finally, several trajectories with the starting points from different areas and the ending points in different gravity ranges are tested and compared to carry out the numerical simulations. These results indicate that the IOAP has many advantages, such as a high matching accuracy and strong positioning applicability in different gravity regions. Compared with the TERCOM (terrain contour matching algorithm), its average matching accuracy was the highest, increased by 40.39%.

Abstract:
Today’s society is earmarked by developments in technology so drastic, that our lives are continuously changed, impacted and remolded. When thinking about how many impressions one goes through during a single day, the results will be uncountable. And at an increasing pace, many of these impressions are shifting to the digital realm. This thesis acknowledges these rapid changes in the modern world of marketing, particularly the digital aspects of it. Yet while a great amount of research has been conducted to more closely understand digital marketing and how to conduct it, a significantly little amount of research has been spent focusing on the customer. This while the path that a customer takes from need to purchase may have grown to be more complex than ever. Not all the impressions that a customer gains on a certain product or brand come solely from the company behind it. As such, we decided to focus on exploring this customer journey – a relatively nascent theme in the field of marketing research. More specifically, we aim to answer the following research question: How is the customer purchasing decision affected by the customer’s interaction with touch points throughout the customer journey? Our main purpose was to arrive at a model as an answer to the research question, that could be used as a foundation for future research studies. We were intensely curious at gaining a better understanding of the customer journey and what the customers experience as they are touched by different influential channels during their travel from need to purchase. Our study shows that it is possible to synthesize the state of current research on the topic of the customer journey and support it with empirical data gathered from interviews with a variety of customers. Central to our thesis are the following two definitions that we have constructed based on current literature: The customer journey is the individual experience that a customer has when interacting with touch points in the path from a pre-purchase to a post-purchase setting. Touch points are moments of contact between customer and company that individually and collectively influence customer experience. The third critical element is that of the customer experience, which we don’t explicitly define, but implicitly construe as a distinct construct with a powerful impact by serving as the catalyst between touch points and customer actions and perceptions. The result is a conceptual model of the customer journey that we feel could be a foundation for future research on the customer journey to build upon and perhaps one day could serve as an overarching model for marketing as a whole.

Abstract:
碩士<br>國立臺東大學<br>兒童文學研究所<br>93<br>Abstract “SOKA GAKKAI INTERNATIONAL” (SGI) Belongs to Nichiren sect. The studies and practice thereof are based on the Lotus Sutra. With the Lotus ideals in mind, SGI extends the idea of “in one thought to embrace the 3,000 ideas in the Sense” in the sutra into “in one thought to embrace the 3,000 ideas in the Matter” as the literal foundation. The institution has been promoting the corrective practice of connecting Buddhist philosophy and day-to-day activities. Through Michael Ende’s works, we can see his thoughts breaking the boundary between religions and sects. The Eastern Buddhism can be easily seen in the philosophy revealed in the work. This study is based on the analysis of “the Neverending Story” by Ende. I start from discovering the truth of life and then demonstrate the consistency between the story and the space-time view in Buddhism, followed by the analysis of the source of the life power from point of view of “faith”. In addition, the figurative content is also one of the main analyzed subjects. This “Ten Essential Realities” related paper is concluded in three main aspects: First, the description of the essence of the sutras: This paper is not exclusively about “discovering” and finding oneself through the theme of the story (the Form). As analyzing the spirit of the characters (the Nature), it is also about “to take the practice seriously” and the appropriate attitude towards living and practicing. In this study, the true meaning of “Reincarnation” is even discussed through the essence of “Never-ending” hidden in the theme content (the Corpus or Embodiment). Second, the description of the effects of the sutras: This paper is emphasized on “actual practice” and the necessity thereof through the plots of the story (the Powers and the Function). It is also about “the symbiosis of causes and effects”; the storylines (the Primary Cause and the Karma) combined with the truth of “the one and undivided cause and effect”. The “Imaginary World” also consists in the dissertation; the mysterious stories told in figuration (the Effect). Buddha hood is revealed through the study as well; the stories about gradually accomplishing “the power of the vow” with the wisdom (the Karmic Reward). Third, the description of the consistency of the sutras: This paper is about completing “life discovery”; creating life with the logics in the story (the Inseparability or Inevitability of all). It fully indicates the Buddhist wisdom in the Lotus Sutra and “the Never-ending Story”, as well as the modern religious spirit elevated in the two great works.

Lee, Sangjoon, and Darlene Machell Espeña. Remapping the Cold War in Asian Cinemas. Amsterdam University Press, 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.5117/9789463727273.

Abstract:
This book is about cinema and the cultural Cold War in Asia, set against the larger history of the cultural, political, and institutional linkages between the US, Europe, and Asia at the height of the Cold War. From the popularity of CIA-sponsored espionage films in Hong Kong and South Korea to the enduring Cold War rhetoric of brotherly relations in contemporary Sino-Indian co-production, cinema has always been a focal point of the cultural Cold War in Asia. Historically, both the United States and the Soviet Union viewed cinema as a powerful weapon in the battle to win hearts and minds—not just in Europe, but also in Asia. The Cold War in Asia was, properly speaking, a hot war, with proxy military confrontations between the United States, on one side, and the Soviet Union and China on the other. Amid this political and military turbulence, cataclysmic shifts occurred in the culture and history of Asian cinemas as well as in the latitude of US cultural diplomacy in Asia. The collection of essays in this volume sheds light on the often-forgotten history of the cultural Cold War in Asia. Taken together, the volume’s fifteen chapters examine film cultures and industries in Asia to showcase the magnitude and depth of the Cold War’s impact on Asian cinemas, societies, and politics. By shifting the lens to Asia, the contributors to this volume re-examine the dominant narratives about the global Cold War and highlight the complex and unique ways in which Asian societies negotiated, contested, and adapted to the politics and cultural manifestations of the Cold War.

Abstract:
This study explores the idea of a significant business, framing it through the key concepts that define it and illustrating it through a case study that narrates the evolution of a century-old company. Born as an intellectual response to the economic and financial crisis of 2008, the significant business is conceived as an entity capable of enduring over time through the creation of value and its distribution within the community in which it operates. The significant business should be also aware of its own identity and of the need to innovate itself over time considering the synergies and the collaborations that the territory offers, to continue to create wealth. This contribution is part of a series of works that, resulting from numerous action-research projects coordinated by Professor Carlo Bagnoli, have seen as protagonists the companies and their strategic innovation. The starting point of many of these projects is the Manifesto of the Significant Company (Bagnoli et al. 2015), which aims at imagining a business model able to explore and innovate the company to increase its competitiveness, and also to restore meaning to the company itself, through the definition of its own identity. Contributing to previous works, this book explores the idea of significant enterprise by adopting a business and a historical perspective. The first part of the book deals with the business perspective, to introduce the value model commonly used in action research studies undertaken by the spin-off Strategy Innovation of Ca’ Foscari University of Venice, and to describe the specific model of a significant business. The second part of the book narrates the story of a centuries-long business, Barovier&amp;Toso, exploring its evolutions. Focusing on the different perspectives that shaped the key concepts and narrating the path followed by a centenary company, this work hopes to shed further light on this fascinating theme together with the reader.

Abstract:
AbstractSatisfiability solving has been used to tackle a range of long-standing open math problems in recent years. We add another success by solving a geometry problem that originated a century ago. In the 1930s, Esther Klein’s exploration of unavoidable shapes in planar point sets in general position showed that every set of five points includes four points in convex position. For a long time, it was open if an empty hexagon, i.e., six points in convex position without a point inside, can be avoided. In 2006, Gerken and Nicolás independently proved that the answer is no. We establish the exact bound: Every 30-point set in the plane in general position contains an empty hexagon. Our key contributions include an effective, compact encoding and a search-space partitioning strategy enabling linear-time speedups even when using thousands of cores.

AbstractIn this introduction, we note how academic work has come to be ever more closely entwined with air travel, and point out that we, in the face of climate crisis, are obliged to transition to other means of academic communication. Such a transition requires a reliable documentation of the consequences of academic flying; a deep understanding of the various reasons why academics fly; as well as sophisticated insight into what can replace flying and how. The introduction explores these themes first through David Lodge’s novels Changing Places and Small World, and then explains how the book’s chapters follow up the research agenda on academic aeromobility, as well as how this agenda can contribute to practical change.

AbstractClassifying knowledge always inevitably implies the opportunity to exercise power. In an era where academia is increasingly anchored to a distinction between human and social sciences, to a rigid separation between disciplines presumed to safeguard their relevance, it is no small matter to recognize that there are still scholars whose work systematically eludes a fixed placement, sometimes ending up challenging a series of conventions that are anything but given or harmless. This is certainly the case for a great intellectual like Bruno Latour, forced to grapple with the reactions provoked by his body of research—so decidedly mutable and situated at the intersection of traditionally distinct disciplinary fields such as sociology, philosophy, anthropology, semiotics—to the point of resorting to the autobiographical form to describe the trajectory of an intellectual adventure made of encounters, deviations, recoveries, and circular paths.

Abstract:
Paradoxality as a Specific Feature of Dostoevsky’s Literary Works. Techniques, Stylistics, Mechanisms of Action All works by Dostoevsky reveal the presence of paradox. These paradoxes act according to mechanisms that depend either on the fictional (polyphonic) or nonfictional (monologic) text “dominant.” Taking as a starting point (a) the arguments of G.S. Morson, according to whom paradoxes “seem to carry the quintessence of ‘Dostoevskyism’, particularly of his brand of humor,” (b) the analysis of Dostoevsky’s paradoxical humor; and (c) the three main categories of paradoxes (“empty or rhetorical”, “negative”, “positive”), we argue that Dostoevsky applies a fourth type of paradox, one that affects neither the premise nor the ending of the paradoxical structure, but their intrinsic logical interconnection. This article analyses a repertoire of paradoxical techniques used by Dostoevsky, focusing on the destabilizing humoristic function they enact.

Abstract:
AbstractAs human population grows in number, the amount of (organic and non-organic) waste materials has grown rapidly year by year.Changes of consumption and lifestyle have generated a higher waste amount. Waste management has become a significant issue in today’s society. In 2014, the EU countries registered 2.494 million tons of generated waste, which was an increase in growth of 2.8% compared with data from 2008. Different renewable materials are ending up as waste, such as glass, paper, plastic, textile, which may be used in a recycling process. This chapter will discuss these challenges with the focus on one of these materials, textiles, as building materials. We also introduce the perspective of Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) aspects, and especially Human-Built Environment Interaction which will give some specific focus on textiles used as recycled materials. The result of the critical literature review in the area of textiles as building material from an HCI point of view suggest a set of interaction design dimensions that can be considered and applied on the usage of textiles for built environments.

Abstract:
The Army Aviation Hall of Fame states that "No individual has had a greater impact on the Army and the Aviation Branch" than General Richard Cody. After receiving his commission in 1972 at West Point, Cody served with distinction for 36 years until retiring as the Army's 31st Vice Chief of Staff in 2008. While still a Lieutenant Colonel, in 1991 he led his Apache battalion into Iraq to fire the first shots of Operation DESERT STORM, eliminating critical enemy radar sites before the air war campaign even began. In the years following September 11, 2001, as Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations (G-3/5/7) and then as Vice Chief of Staff, his efforts led to the most sweeping transformation the Army and the Aviation Branch had ever seen. An ace special operations pilot and brilliant military mastermind, General Cody may best be remembered, however, as the well-loved "Soldiers' General."

Abstract:
The results of a recent ice indentation series, along with a 4-point beam bending series, are analysed in the present paper with regard to time-dependent fracture. The beam bending series used a a 4-point apparatus to test the effects of velocity on fracture toughness, and to study time delayed fracture at loading rates below the fracture strength of ice. The indentor series used different indentors (diameters ranging from 10 mm to 70 mm), and applied various velocities used to test the time-dependent fracturing of ice. For experiments with a low ratio of velocity to indentor showed damaged-enhanced creep behaviour, ending in large, global failure during some tests. For the highest velocity tests, the ice showed increasingly brittle failure. The loading curve in these tests displayed many smaller spalling events, or ice extrusion events, with cyclic ramp-up of loads between each event.

Abstract:
Abstract The stiffness of a short section of a coiled spring is derived by writing the elastic energy in the spring wire, considering its actual geometric form, and then applying the Castigliano theorem. The resulting linear stiffness model includes the effects of pitch, curvature of the wire and distortion due to normal and transverse forces in the wire. Further, the starting and ending points of the spring wire are taken into consideration. This stiffness model is used to derive the locally linearized stiffness matrix for a complete coiled spring that is laterally loaded. The stiffness matrix is evaluated by first calculating the non-linear deformation for a given external load and then linearizing the analysis about that equilibrium point. The deformation is calculated by summing the contributions from a number of small spring elements for which the deformations are considered to be linear. The natural frequencies of a mechanical system consisting of a rigid body and a laterally loaded spring are calculated and compared with experimental results. These experiments clearly verify the proposed theoretical stiffness matrix for the complete spring and detect the rotational asymmetry of the spring.

Abstract:
Abstract A literature review of the freezing point expressions shows the availability of various equations to estimate the freezing rate. The expression of the cooling rate during freezing is used to estimate the freezing rate. Cylinders of bread dough were frozen in a tunnel with three different freezing conditions. Gassing power of the yeasted dough (saccharomyces cerevisiae) after thawing were obtained with regards to the location. A finite difference scheme was used to model freezing of an infinite cylinder of bread dough and to calculate freezing rates. Experimental results pointed out that gassing power and thus the freezing rate were both location dependent. The influence of the beginning criterion and of the ending criterion for freezing are related to the freezing rate expressions. A modified expression of the freezing rate is proposed (weighted freezing rate) and is related to gassing power.

Abstract:
The increase in the production and utilization of plastics has created a never-ending problem of plastic waste. Developing countries face challenges with plastic waste disposal that in due process negatively impacts the environmental ecosystem. That notwithstanding, it suffices to mention that most developing countries have poor road networks that pose a burden towards smooth economic and social development. The problem is further exacerbated by the limited availability of bitumen which is usually imported but also has environmental concerns. It is against this background that we proposed alternative binders from plastic waste which can help developing countries to manage plastic waste as well as build road networks, thereby leading to sustainable development. We explored the 80/100 penetration grade bitumen modification (Penetration grade 85 and Softening temperature 46°C) using polyethylene terephthalate (PET) waste (2 – 12%) and lignin (0.2%) as a crosslinking agent by weight for every PET waste – Bitumen sample. The research showed that Plastic waste and lignin improved the performance of bitumen. The modified bitumen with 10% waste PET and 0.2% lignin enhanced the softening point and penetration points to 55°C and 46, respectively; hence the incorporation of PET and lignin provided better properties compared to the neat bitumen.

Abstract:
Using daily retail prices gathered through web scraping in Mexico, we analyze if price changes can be characterized by time-dependent features, like the duration of the price spell, and/or by variables associated with the state of the economy. Through the lens of a duration model, we find evidence of both time- and state-dependency behavior. Favoring time-dependency, on the one hand, estimates indicate that price spells exhibit greater risk of ending every seven days relative to other days in between. Advocating for state-dependency, the probability of price changes seems to be affected by variations in the USD/MXN exchange rate, variations in real point of sales expenditures and the COVID-19 pandemic. Finally, leveraging data gathered via direct visits to brick-and-mortar stores, we also find time-dependency and state-dependency in the duration of price spells.

Abstract:
The Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR), in partnership with the International Fund for Agricultural Development, implemented the project Convergence on Value Chain Enhancement for Rural Growth and Empowerment (ConVERGE) with the goal of empowering Agrarian Reform Beneficiaries (ARBs) to drive rural economic growth across 10 provinces spanning 3 regions. DAR engaged the Philippine Institute for Development Studies to undertake baseline and endline studies, serving as a crucial assessment tool for the project's performance and providing insights to inform the comprehensive ARC Cluster Development (ARCCD) Strategy aimed at advancing smallholder agriculture in the Philippines. This endline report provides the analysis of the baseline and endline datasets. It discusses the following key points: (i) results of the impact evaluation study, (ii) result of final process evaluation, and (iii) recommendations for the ARCCD Strategy. The quantitative analysis part of the study indicates a significant 41-percent average treatment effect from the project, validating its theory of change in boosting income for ARC cluster households through value chain interventions. The process evaluation generally confirms the assumptions and impact pathways, with some deviations and shortfalls. Although the beneficiaries express satisfaction with the project, they have limited understanding of its rationale. The clustering method, which links small farmers to value chains by forming ARBs into lead and participating ARB organizations (ARBOs), appears to enhance government support efficiency for organized groups. The paper underscores the importance of additional capacity building for both lead and participating ARBOs, and it recommends a more active engagement of other government agencies to address value-adding technologies, food processing standards, credit accessibility, and market facilitation.

Diwakar, Vidya, Emmanuel Tumusiime, Marta Eichsteller, Joseph Simbaya, and Beryl Oranga. Empowered Worldviews: Assessing the Persistence of Psychosocial Intervention Effects in Zambia. Institute of Development Studies, 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.19088/cpan.2023.024.

Full text
Abstract:
Evidence on the persistence of psychosocial outcomes of interventions over the medium and long term, and in the face of shocks and stressors, is limited. We examined the extent to which empowerment associated with a psychosocial, faith-based approach, Empowered Worldview (EWV) persisted 3–5 years post-delivery of the intervention in Zambia among smallholder farmers. The EWV intervention in Zambia was delivered as part of THRIVE, an integrated livelihoods programme. We followed a previous study to disaggregate individual-level empowerment associated with EWV into three domains: internal (which relates to ‘power within’), localised (typically participation and access), and structural (e.g. institutional, environmental, and social structures). To explore the persistence of EWV effects on empowerment, we used mixed methods and longitudinal data collected in 2020 and 2023, which were the midline and endline points of the THRIVE programme. Empirically, we used descriptive and regression analysis to compare internal and localised empowerment levels between the survey rounds (2020 and 2023) across study groups – including groups that received EWV before and after 2020 – and to the control group. We also re- interviewed a subset of EWV participants interviewed in 2020 to understand how empowerment has changed at the individual level over time . The results show levels of internal empowerment associated with the EWV intervention persisted between the midline and endline surveys, especially when combined with THRIVE livelihood interventions. At the midline, 80.0 per cent of THRIVE with EWV participants were empowered, compared to 82.3 per cent at the endline. In contrast, 72.6 per cent and 73.07 per cent of the control sample participants were empowered at the midline and the endline, respectively. Quantitative results further show that localised empowerment significantly improved between survey rounds among participants who received EWV training and is positively associated with internal empowerment, consistent with literature that suggests localised enablers (supporting social environments) are crucial to sustaining internal empowerment. The qualitative data shows that persistent internal and localised empowerment was observed mostly among households in the non- poor wellbeing category, suggesting that additional interventions are needed to reach the poorest participants. Results also show internal and localised empowerment are positively associated with indicators of household resilience. We conclude the paper with recommendations for programming.

Monetary Policy Report, January 2025. Banco de la República, 2025. https://doi.org/10.32468/inf-pol-mont-eng.tr1-2025.

Full text
Abstract:
While inflation fell significantly in 2024, it continues above the 3% target. However, monetary policy measures and corrections in particular factors that exert upward price pressures have helped direct inflation toward the objective. Economic activity continues to recover and is expected to continue growing. The monetary policy interest rate is compatible with the convergence of inflation to its 3% target and the gradual recovery of economic growth toward more sustainable levels. Inflation has fallen significantly, from 9.3% in 2023 to 5.2% in 2024. During this year and into the next, inflation would continue to decline towards the inflation target. In the last quarter of 2024, inflation continued its downward path, ending the year at 5.2% with the help of smaller increases in the prices of some regulated goods and services (particularly utilities and fuel prices) and food away from home. Despite inflation’s significant decline throughout 2024, including in the last quarter and the positive performance of goods and food, headline inflation ended the year above the target. Monetary policy actions and the adjustment in economic activity contributed to inflation’s decline; however, indexation to a high inflation rate in 2023 and labor cost pressures constrained a more marked drop. Over the next two years, both headline and core inflation are expected to gradually approach the 3% target. The indexation of certain goods and services prices to lower inflation and the cumulative effects of monetary policy decisions would assist in steering inflation closer to the target. Nevertheless, inflationary pressures from the recent minimum wage increase and those resulting from the exchange rate’s behavior in a environment of high global uncertainty, could make the reduction of inflation slower than projected. Economic activity continues on a path of gradual recovery, helping inflation remain close to the 3% target and encouraging a stable labor market environment. Colombia’s economy continued to strengthen in the second half of 2024, backed by strong household consumption and signs of investment recovery. Increased spending on machinery and equipment, civil works construction, and the recovery of inventories would driving the improvement seen in investment. Private consumption (household consumption) has grown, supported by lower interest rates, improved access to credit, and increased disposable income. Economic activity is projected to grow 1.8% in 2024 and would continue to accelerate to 2.6% in 2025 and 3.4% in 2026, attributed to a monetary policy that would gradually ease as inflation falls. Consequently, the economy is foreseen to reach a level close to its productive capacity by 2026. The unemployment rate has decreased and is at low levels compared to its historical performance, concurrent with growing employment levels. Additionally, improvements in salaried employment have led to additional reductions in the informality ratios. Monetary policy interest rate reductions have been reflected in significant decreases in financial market interest rates, contributing to the the gradual recovery of credit. Since the end of 2023, the Board of Directors of Banco de la República has reduced the monetary policy interest rate by 375 basis points to its current level of 9.5%. The latter is compatible with inflation converging to its 3% target over the next two years and the gradual recovery of economic activity to sustainable levels. At its December meeting, the Board of Directors of Banco de la República decided by majority vote to lower the monetary policy interest rate by 25 basis points and concurred at its January meeting to maintain the benchmark rate at 9.5%. All monetary policy decisions have contributed to reducing annual inflation amid a backdrop of gradual improvements in economic activity and a stable labor market. The impact of the minimum wage increase on prices and the exchange rate behavior in an environment of high external and fiscal uncertainty are significant factors guiding inflation’s future trajectory. Consequently, information in this context will help define the future monetary rate decisions that will allow inflation to continue converging toward the 3% target. In this sense, monetary policy interest rate decisions continue to support the sustainable recovery of economic growth and maintain the prudence required given the continuing risks surrounding the future behavior of inflation.
