Full text
Abstract:
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is one of the most common reproductive health problems of women, causing irregular periods and potential infertility amongst other challenging symptoms. Effective treatment remains a significant challenge and is largely achieved through hormonal medication and lifestyle changes. This third edition covers the aetiology, pathology, impact on fertility and effective medical and surgical management. The content has been thoroughly revised in line with updated guidelines and research developments in the field. A new chapter on the patient's perspective has been included, bringing valuable insight into the lived experience of the condition. Mood disorders and the psychological aspects of PCOS are also covered for the first time. This is a key reference for all clinicians involved in the care of patients with PCOS, including gynaecologists, IVF specialists and reproductive endocrinologists.

Abstract:
Anaesthesia for patients with endocrine disorders involves the management of both extremely common and extremely rare conditions. There is a high incidence of diabetes, hypothyroidism, and hyperthyroidism in the population but pituitary apoplexy, phaeochromocytoma, and insulinoma may never be encountered during the career of the general anaesthetist. Whenever possible, elective surgery should await normalization of abnormal endocrine function. For example, patients with uncontrolled hyperthyroidism are at risk of developing a thyroid crisis so elective surgery should be delayed until they are euthyroid. This chapter discusses the anatomy, physiology, and anaesthetic management for surgery on the pituitary, thyroid, parathyroid, and adrenal glands. Anaesthetic issues relating to patients with diabetes mellitus and carcinoid tumours are covered in detail. Endocrine emergencies may mimic other causes of cardiovascular collapse and successful management requires a multidisciplinary approach involving anaesthetists, endocrinologists, surgeons, accident and emergency, and intensive care specialists.

Full text
Abstract:
In order to establish a worldwide standard of care for management of bariatric patients, the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE), The Obesity Society (TOS), and the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) published clinical practice guidelines (CPG) for perioperative management of bariatric surgery patients in 2008. The CPG, which were updated in 2013, have been endorsed by professional bariatric societies worldwide. This chapter summarizes guidelines based on the updated CPG, with a focus on prevention and management of complications of bariatric surgery. The chapter outlines the guidelines for perioperative care of bariatric patients and specific management of perioperative complications using a system- or disease-oriented approach. The guidelines are designed to assist practitioners in patient management; however, practitioners should practice bariatric surgery based on current knowledge, experience, latest literature reviews, and patients’ needs in order to achieve optimal patient care.

Aboulghar, Mohamed, and Botros Rizk, eds. Ovarian Stimulation. 2nd ed. Cambridge University Press, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.1017/9781316477021.

Full text
Abstract:
Ovarian stimulation is the starting point of reproductive medicine but the procedure can result in adverse reactions particularly the dangerous ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome. Fully revised in line with modern practice of ovarian stimulation, this new edition is divided into six sections that cover mild forms, non-conventional forms, IVF, complications and their management, alternatives, and the practicalities of procedures. All aspects of ovarian stimulation are discussed including the different stimulation protocols from which to choose, the management of poor responders and hyper-responders, as well as stimulation in patients with PCOS. Comprehensively reviewing the modern approach to ovarian stimulation, the alternative procedures are also described, both in IVF and other methods of assisted reproduction. Written by leading experts on reproductive health and fertility, this book will assist infertility specialists, gynecologists, reproductive endocrinologists and radiologists in determining successful treatment for their patients.

Full text
Abstract:
A new method of self-control of diabetes based on the results of continuous monitoring of glycemia (HMG) is especially relevant in patients who are on pump insulin therapy, especially since the start of pump insulin therapy is carried out with the mandatory installation of the HMG system [1,3]. Due to the novelty of these two methods (treatment of diabetes and control of glycemia) for a wide clinical practice, there is an urgent need to publish concise practical guides on this topic for doctors, both for self-study of these methods, and for advanced training courses. Based on the above and our experience of teaching at the Department of Endocrinology of the Federal Medical University of MONICA, this guide has been prepared, which will be useful, first of all, for endocrinologists, therapists working with patients with diabetes, as well as for senior students of medical institutes who are interested in new directions in practical medicine.

Abstract:
The purpose of this book is to explore the neurobiology and psychobiology underlying puberty and adolescence. It tells the story of how contemporary neuroscience has come to make significant contributions to the understanding of a developmental period that used to be the sole purview of developmental psychologists and pediatric endocrinologists. The authors presume the reader will have a general understanding of the basic principles of neuroscience and psychology and have written this book to serve as an appropriate text for an upper-level undergraduate seminar or graduate course designed to probe puberty and adolescence more deeply from a psychobiological perspective. Topics covered in specific chapters include timing and regulation of reproductive maturation (puberty), mechanisms of adolescent brain development in laboratory animals and humans, neural underpinnings of higher risk-taking and impulsive behavior in adolescents, hormonal programming of social behaviors during adolescence, and effects of stress and drugs on the adolescent brain. The book ends with the authors’ perspective on some of the big questions about the adolescent brain and behavior that remain to be answered.

Full text
Abstract:
Oxford Desk Reference: Endocrinology provides an overview of the principles of endocrinology, a detailed pathophysiology of disorders of the endocrine system, and practical advice on the clinical presentation of the spectrum of endocrine disease. Written by over 100 international experts, it discusses the diagnosis, management, and relevant genetic and immunological aspects of endocrine disorders. Whilst discussion of common endocrine conditions is comprehensive, it also includes rare syndromes with useful guidance on screening and follow-up. Providing clinical advice to endocrinologists, general physicians, and specialist nurses, it also includes background to biochemical, immunological, genetic, and epidemiological aspects of endocrinology. It is extensively cross-referenced, with suggestions for further reading, includes links to recent international guidelines, and is illustrated throughout with diagrams, tables, and radiological images. There is a quick reference section which covers algorithms for investigation and management of commonly encountered clinical scenarios for use in the clinic. There is an outpatient resource for explanation of endocrine conditions to patients using diagrams of common conditions while in the clinic, in addition to patient support groups and advice, and discussion on legal aspects of medicine and driving regulations. This should be a very useful resource for all involved in the assessment and management of any patient with any form of a possible endocrine disorder.

Full text
Abstract:
Although estrogens are best known for their roles in reproduction, they are also key modulators of brain regions that mediate learning and memory formation. This regulation has significant translational implications, as estrogens contribute to age-related memory decline and dementia, emotional disorders, addiction, and recovery from brain injury. Although the importance of estrogens for memory formation has been well accepted within the behavioral neuroendocrinology community, they have yet to be fully appreciated by neuroscientists outside of the discipline. The majority of researchers are not trained endocrinologists, and no previous monograph comprehensively encompasses the breadth of basic and clinical research on this subject. Estrogens and Memory: Basic Research and Clinical Implications provides a compendium of cutting-edge basic and clinical research describing the ways in which estrogens regulate memory in a variety of species. Chapters are written by leading experts whose work is on the forefront of this exciting field. The book is organized into three sections: effects of estrogens on the hippocampus and other brain regions central to memory, effects of estrogens on memory and related cognitive processes throughout the lifespan, and translational implications of estrogenic regulation of memory for aging and disease. This book gives an insider’s perspective on how hormonal regulation of brain function influences cognition and provides a one-stop reference for those interested in learning about the effects of estrogens on memory and the resulting implications for mental health.
