Abstract:
Abstract We look at a concentrated market structure to determine the more likely merger when firms are initially asymmetric. A feature of the analysis is that a high cost firm participating in a merger can learn from the low cost participant. The determination of the equilibrium ownership structure (EOS) rests on the size of the cost asymmetries and learning abilities. Using an endogenous merger model, we find that the EOS always involves a merger between the two most efficient firms. This result holds whether firms adopt a decentralized or centralized structure post-merger and whether learnin

Abstract:
We study how an agent learns from endogenous data when their prior belief is misspecified. We show that only uniform Berk–Nash equilibria can be long‐run outcomes, and that all uniformly strict Berk–Nash equilibria have an arbitrarily high probability of being the long‐run outcome for some initial beliefs. When the agent believes the outcome distribution is exogenous, every uniformly strict Berk–Nash equilibrium has positive probability of being the long‐run outcome for any initial belief. We generalize these results to settings where the agent observes a signal before acting.

This paper introduces adaptive learning into the third-generation currency crisis model of Aghion, Bacchetta, and Banerjee (2001, Currency crises and monetary policy in an economy with credit constraints,European Economic Review45, 1121–1150). Adaptive learning might reflect, for example, uncertainty about the economy's exposure to adverse balance sheet effects. Even when equilibrium is unique, we show that the learning algorithm's escape dynamics can produce the same kind of Markov-switching exchange rate behavior that is typically attributed to sunspots or herds. Recent research has explored how minor changes in expectation formation can change the stability properties of a model. One common way to alter expectation formation involves agents' use of econometrics to form forecasting equations. Agents update their forecasts based on new information that arises as the economy progresses through time. In this way agents

Not only could this phenomenon explain why organism complexity was not at all correlated with the genome size, or explain how an organisms could be affected by experience and environment at the molecular level, but it was perhaps the most flexible and adaptive regulatory mechanism identified to date. Calcium/Calmodulin-dependent kinase II (CaMKII) is a serine/threonine kinase with a wide range of substrates. A number of studies have established that CaMKII is fundamentally important for various learning and memory processes. Given this importance the activity of CaMKII must be tightly regulated. Two endogenous inhibitor proteins of CaMKII, CaMK2N1 and CaMK2N2, have been identified. During contextual fear memory formation CaMK2N1 and CaMK2N2 expression increases in brain regions that are related to the task. However, the functions of CaMK2Ns are still unknown. The model generates endogenous price fluctuations with similar statistical properties as those observed in real return data, such as fat tails and volatility clustering. High infant mortality (IM) rates in the U.S. have been a major public health concern for decades. Many studies have focused on understanding causes, risk factors, and interventions that can reduce IM. However, death of an infant is the result of the interplay between many risk factors, which in some cases can be traced to the infancy of their parents. Consequently, these complex interactions challenge the effectiveness of many interventions. The long-term goal of this study is to advance the common understanding of effective interventions for improving health outcomes and, in particular, infan

The decisions about which technologies should be invested in can be difficult to make since they are based on information about the future, which is uncertain.
