Abstract:
This research aims at describing the type of conjunction grammatical cohesion in Andrea Hirata's novel Sang Pemimpi. This type of grammatical cohesion consists of grammatical cohesion of reference and grammatical cohesion of substitution. This research is a qualitative descriptive. Qualitative descriptive research is a way to solve problems in research by describing and interpreting objects in the form of symptoms or social events in life according to the original data. In this research, the sources of the data are words, sentences, quotes, or expressions found in the dialogues of the characters in Andrea Hirata's novel Sang Pemimpi. Based on the results of the research it can be concluded that there are types conjunction grammatical cohesion found in the novel Sang Pemimpi by Andrea Hirata. The most dominant type is anaphora endophora reference grammatical cohesion, while the least type occured is grammatical cohesion of anaphora endophora substitution. There are 130 utterances of reference grammatical cohesion found in the novel, consisting of 122 anaphora endophora and 8 cataphora endophora. There are 7 substitution grammatical cohesion of anaphora endophora.

Abstract:
The title of this research is “Personal Deixis on Personal Pronoun of Barakamon Anime Created by Tachibana Masaki” that aimed to research the deixis form, deixis reference, and deictic shift on personal pronoun of Barakamon anime 1-12 episode created by Tachibana Masaki. This research was analyzed by using descriptive method and informal technique. Deixis form and deixis reference analysis used personal deixis of pragmatic theory by Yule (1996) and personal deixis reference by Halliday and Hasan (1976). While the deictic shift analysis used personal deictic shift theory by Purwo (1984). The result of this research is on Barakamon anime was found three types of person deixis in the personal pronoun with each type of person deixis divided into two forms are singular and plural i.e. first personal deixis e.g. watashi, atashi, boku, ore, uchi, watashitachi, watashira, atashira, bokutachi, bokura, oretachi, orera, uchira, and wareware, second personal deixis e.g. anata, anta, kimi, omae, anatatachi, antatachi, antara, omaetachi, and omaera, and third personal deixis e.g. kare, koitsu, soitsu, aitsu, koitsura and aitsura. Deixis reference that found are exophora reference and endophora reference with anaphora category. And deictic shift that found are personal deictic shifting first personal form for second personal by using watashi, personal deictic shifting second personal form for first personal by using omae and omaera, and personal deictic shifting second personal form for third personal by using anata and omae.

Abstract:
The aim of the research is to find out endophoric references in Mark Zuckerberg biography and the relationship between discourse analysis and pragmatic. The research used descriptive qualitative research design. The data obtained from Mark Zuckerberg biography written by the biography website. The data are analyzed using Halliday & Hasan’s theory (1976) of reference cohesion reference is one of the cohesive devices. The result shows that endophoric reference exists in Mark Zuckerberg biography endophoric. Endophoric consist of two types, the first is anaphoric and the second is cataphoric. In this research there are five type cohesive devices that are usually used in texts like substitution, references, ellipsis, lexical cohesion, and conjunctions. In the research found that cataphoric is dominant than anaphoric because the subject is located in the beginning of the sentences. Cohesive devices not only focused on lexical cohesion, but also focused on ellipsis and substitution and reference.

AbstractThis paper deals with the syntactic and semantic properties of a specific kind of anaphoric device (AD) in English, instantiated by Prn+SELF lexical items (himself/herself/itself…; ‘SELF’ henceforth), which do not behave like anaphors in the sense of Binding Theory either syntactically or semantically. These devices have received the name of intensives in the grammatical literature (Leskosky 1972; Siemund 2000, among many others). We will look at the syntactic behaviour of so-called intensives in different syntactic contexts, and refine the classification of these ADs taking into consideration (a) how each type of intensive is derived, (b) the kinds of syntactic rules that can affect them, and (c) their meaning.

Abstract:
[full article and abstract in English] Definiteness as a grammatical or pragmatic category is usually explained via the act of reference. In this spirit, a definite noun phrase is said to ensure that the hearer can identify the entity to which the NP refers, thus establishing a successful act of communication. The well-known typology of definiteness types developed by Hawkins (1978) relies on this assumption. However, such an explanation fails to clarify all the definite noun phrases in discourse. This paper argues that the information provided in the complex nominal constituent can yield a definite interpretation of the nominal regardless of the hearer’s ability to identify the real-life referent to which the noun refers. Such types of definite noun phrases are subsumed in this article under the term “endophoric definiteness”. I will discuss two subtypes of endophoric definiteness. First, the relational definiteness, based on the notion of reference-point constructions will be discussed. Then I will turn to modificational definiteness where the use of modifiers contribute to the definite interpretation of the nominal. The article focuses on how the endophoric definiteness types function and what strategies can be used to mark them formally. To illustrate this point, I use the qualitative analysis of Romanian data. It shows that a language may have different grammatical patterns for the two subtypes of endophoric definiteness. This formal distinction in linguistic expression shows that relational and modificational definiteness types must be taken into account as contributing, in distinct ways, to the category of definiteness.

Abstract:
This paper reports on a comparative study performed in the field of Corpus Linguistics. The objective of the research was to analyze the distributional pattern of interactive and interactional metadiscourse features in two modes of academic spoken and written English. For this reason, a list of metadiscourse characteristics was gathered. By using the Sketch engine software, all the words were scrutinized in the corpus and their concordance lines were analyzed one by one in both corpora (British Academic Written English Corpus and British Academic Spoken English Corpus). As the data can show, in both corpora, the general propensity of the authors was towards the interactive metadiscourse features. In addition, in the written corpus, the transitions and endophoric markers were used more often; while in the spoken, endophoric markers and transitions were the most frequently applied metadiscourse features. In the interactional metadiscourse features, hedges and self-mentions were the most frequent in the written form; whereas in the spoken, self-mentions and boosters were used moe often.

Abstract:
Taking a cognitive perspective, and concentrating on instances of exophora (or so-called ‘antecedentless’ anaphora), where by definition there is no co-occurring expression in terms of which a given anaphor might be interpreted (i.e. a potential ‘antecedent’), I aim to show, firstly, that so-called exophora falls within the category of anaphora proper and not deixis; secondly, that it is in terms of a conceptual representation of the situation being evoked, and not in terms of the physical situation itself, that the anaphor is interpreted; and finally, that exophora is in reality a more central manifestation of anaphora than the ‘endophoric’ type, where the ‘antecedent’ expression co-occurs with the anaphor.I will base the discussion on naturally occurring data from French and English, and will consider the contributions of gender- and number-marking within pronominal anaphors, as well as of such features of the anaphoric segment as the argument and referent-order statuses assigned to an anaphor by the governing predicator and its modifiers, and the stress and pitch characteristics of the anaphor. All these features play an important role in the assignment of a full interpretation to so-called ‘endophoric’ anaphors just as much as ‘exophoric’ ones, thereby weakening the theoretical basis for the distinction between the two types.

Abstract:
This study examines the referential properties of a class of complex pronouns labelled M-PRONOUNS, exemplified by Old English HIMSELF, French LUI-MéME and English HISOWN. It is shown that M-pronouns exhibit some properties commonly taken as characterizing reflexive anaphors, and that they also occur as ‘intensive’ pronouns. It is shown, however, that they are not anaphors, and that labelling them ‘intensives’ does not suffice to account for their distribution. It is argued that the semantic properties of M-pronouns may be derived from their morphological structure. Their pronoun component (Old English HIM, French LUI, English HIS) is not a pronominal, in the sense of the Binding Theory, but a bindable expression unspecified for disjoint reference and locality. In the complex form created by M-adjunction, the pronoun is crucially de-stressed and, correlatively, interpreted as endophoric.

Syntactic and Semantic Features of dotądThe paper discusses the expression dotąd. The author makes a distinction between contextual (endophoric) and consituational (exophoric) uses. The analysis is limited to the latter because exophoric uses allow for a locative and temporal interpretation. The author distinguishes two units of language: a pronoun which replaces a temporal or locative expression, and the relator dotąd, aż which indicates a temporal relation between the events described in component sentences.

Abstract:
This article seeks to explore the discourse-semantics of two selected excerpts from Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s Americanah with a focus on reference chains study. The choice to focus on studying reference chains in the selected excerpts aims at first appraising the way Adichie has used them to realize texture within her studied texts. It second aims at finding the extent to which references have contributed to the encoding of underlying meanings therein. To arrive at this, the research has appealed to the mixed quantitative and qualitative methodology. Through the quantitative methodology, the data obtained after analyses have been summarized organized and presented statistically in an informative way. The qualitative methodology ensued has allowed to give sense to the most interpretable data collected. Indeed, the research has interestingly arrived at impressive results. Among several others, the research has revealed that the studied texts are highly cohesive with endophoric references largely predominating over the other reference types. Using such cohesive ties as Adichie has done, has allowed her texts not only to stick together but also to be highly readable and flow logically. Moreover, the extensive use of endophoric references, as witnessed in the studied texts, is revelatory of their mode which is archetypal of a monologic written text. In other respects, the considerable number of exophoric references in the first excerpt reveals its tenor dimension. Such a linguistic feature indicates that it was produced in a context of immediate face-to-face feedbacks with language accompanying action. On the other hand, the fewer number of the same reference type in the second excerpt reveals its field and unveils that it is a written reflective text reconstructing an experience. Drawing upon the theoretically founded analysis of the selected excerpts and the interpretation of the collected data arrived at, the research opens up to such further investigation areas of the systemic functional linguistics as the interpersonal meaning, the experiential meaning, and the textual meaning.

Middle English Medical Recipes: A Metadiscursive Approach This paper seeks to explore Middle English medical recipes from a metadiscursive perspective. This study will draw on Hyland's (2005) metadiscourse model where code glosses, endophoric markers, evidentials, frame markers and transition markers are included in the interactive dimension, and attitude markers, boosters, engagement markers, hedges and self mention are to be found within interactional metadiscourse. I shall apply this framework for the identification and analysis of data in a corpus which comprises a selection of recipes taken from both Middle English Medical Texts (Taavitsainen - Pahta - Mäkinen 2005) and The corpus of early English recipes. The metadiscursive approach to the study of medical recipes will allow us to establish links between authors, texts and audience of the recipe genre and, consequently, to affirm their status as products of social engagement.

Abstract:
The present study aimed at investigating the persuasive role of metadiscourse markers in an Iranian newspaper advertisement headlines; say, Hamshari. To achieve the afore-mentioned purpose, the study adopted Fuertes-Olivera, et. al. (2001)s framework of pragmatic elements of advertising which is, in turn, adapted based on Jakobsonian communication model of the advertising discourse, and Fuertes-Olivera et al. (2001)s framework suggesting different functions of metadiscourse in advertising English. The selected examples showed that while textual metadiscourse helps addressees to interpret headlines within the constraints of genre and epistemology, interpersonal metadiscourse provides a kind of balance between informing and persuading the addressees. Moreover, the findings indicated a variety of metadiscourse strategies used by the advertisers in order to persuade prospective customers, including person markers, hedges, emphatics, endophoric markers and evidents. Regarding pedagogical implications, the present study attempted to broaden the pragmatics of advertising discourse and to stress the important role of metadiscourse in EFL courses.

This paper reports on a research performed in the field of corpus linguistics on metadiscourse features in the British Academic Written English Corpus. For this purpose, the British Academic Written English Corpus, which is freely available and contains 6,968,089 words, was selected as the data resource of the study. The taxonomy of metadiscourse features compiled by Hyland was used as the theoretical framework and the R program was used as the statistical software. The whole corpus was analyzed. As the data can show, the interactive metadiscourse features were more prevalent than the interactional metadiscourse features. In the interactive category, transitions and endophoric markers were used more than other ones; whereas, in the interactional category, hedges and boosters were the predominant metadiscourse features. The prevalence nature of interactive metadiscourse features can add support to the idea that writers were more interested in organizing discourse rather than conducting interaction. The findings of this research can have useful implications for researchers in such fields as contrastive analysis, text linguistics and corpus-based studies.

This paper is a cross-disciplinary investigation of textual metadiscourse markers (TMDMs) in the British Academic Written English (BAWE) corpus. To this end, corpus analysis tools are utilized to investigate the density of each category of TMDMs and the distribution of these categories across BAWE academic divisions. The premise under the investigation in this study is that metadiscourse is a social interaction that facilitates knowledge communication between writers and their targeted readers. Within the framework of Hyland' s (2000, 2005) claim of disciplinary discourse, this study shows a correlational relation between the use and frequency of different TMDMs across academic disciplines. The quantitative results indicate that the use of transitions outnumbered all other TMDMs in the four BAWE academic divisions, accounting for almost 76.76% of the total occurrences of TMDMs. The results also indicate a greater tendency to use endophoric markers in the physical sciences whereas the social sciences and arts and humanities exhibit larger quantities of evidentials and code glosses. The results are interpreted in terms of the epistemological nature of the academic divisions as well as the target readership.

The present study examined the frequently used metadiscourse devices in English scientific research articles written by native (English researchers) and non-native (Arab English researcher) and sought to determine whether differences exist in the use of these devices between Arab researchers of scientific research articles and Native English researchers of scientific research articles. Data was collected from forty research scientific articles written and published in international journals and Arab journals; analysis was done in accordance with Hayland’s model. The analysis revealed that frequently used metadiscourse devices in scientific articles written by native English writers and Arab English writers include evidentials code glosses, frame markers, and endophoric markers; and hedges; boosters; and attitude markers. The results also showed that native English writers of scientific articles embrace more metadiscourse resources than Arab English researchers of scientific academic articles. This confirms that native English writers of scientific articles are more proficient at English than Arab English researchers given the differences in the frequency of metadiscourse resources used. This finding has implication to Arab researchers of scientific research articles.

AbstractThis study investigated metadiscourse in the persuasive essays of fourth graders from both urban and rural communities: 224 students in South Korea and 188 in the US. Each student was asked to write a persuasive essay in his or her native Korean or English in response to a story not previously read or discussed. Analysis with a taxonomy developed by Hyland (2004) indicated significant differences in the metadiscourse by country. In terms of interactive metadiscourse, South Korean students used more sentence-level transitions than U.S. students, who used more frame markers and endophoric markers. With regard to interactional metadiscourse, U.S. students used more hedges, boosters, engagement markers, and self-mentions in their essays. This study also compared the students′ essays by the type of community in which the writers lived. In the US the essays of students in rural communities contained more hedges, whereas those of students in urban areas included significantly more self-mentions. In South Korea, no significant difference was detected in the metadiscourse of students living in rural and urban areas.

Abstract:
A metadiscourse is an important linguistic resource that binds different parts of a text together and facilitates communication building relationships with audiences. This aspect of discourse analysis has gained a considerable attention in academic writing these days. The aim of this study was to identify the types of metadiscourses used in the thesis abstracts of M.Ed. English majors of Tribhuvan University (TU), Kathmandu, Nepal. It also aimed at investigating the distribution patterns of metadiscourse resources in their thesis abstracts. Following Hyland's (2005) metadiscourse taxonomy, a corpus of 20 master theses submitted to the Department of English Education, TU in the year 2019 was analyzed to identify the types of metadiscourse used in the abstracts. Relying on a quantitative data analysis followed by qualitative analysis, it was found that the number of interactive metadiscourse features was considerably higher in the corpus than the interactional metadiscourse markers. The most frequent types of metadiscourses used in the texts were endophoric markers, transitions, boosters self mentions, and code glosses. Understanding the uses and functions of metadiscourse academic writing is pivotal for EFL/ESL students, particularly for postgraduate students when they are writing their theses or research articles for publication.

Abstract:
Metadiscourse marker is one of determining indicators of the quality of the writers writing. Metadiscourse markers enable the writers to interact with the readers effectively. What commonly happens to many undergraduate students studying English as a foreign language is that they are not able to develop an engagement between themselves, their texts, and their readers. Thus, this study investigates the types of metadiscourse markers used by Unimus EFL learners in final project introduction sections, and markers that are frequently used by them in their writing. By using qualitative and quantitative research method, seven introduction sections of final project of Unimus EFL learners focusing on qualitative and qualitative research methods were chosen purposively. As result, the study revealed that in writing introduction sections, the students used various metadiscourse markers, including interactive resources (transitions, frame markers, endophoric markers, evidentials, and code glosses) and interactional resources (hedges, boosters, attitude markers, engagement markers, and self-mensions). Among those categories, interactive resources were found to be frequently used by the learners rather than interactional resources. It means that the writers tended to give attention to and guided the readers through the text by establishing their interpretations explicitly rather than involving the readers in the argument through the use of markers in interactional dimension.

Abstract:
Persuasive writing is a very important prerequisite for undergraduates in their academic life endeavour. For the students to effectively compose good persuasive writing, they need to understand and employ metadiscourse appropriately in their writing. However, a large number of Nigerian undergraduates face lots of challenges in using metadiscourse in their writing. Therefore, this study investigated the use of metadiscourse in the persuasive writing of Nigerian undergraduates, by examining the relationship between the frequency of metadiscourse used and the persuasive writing quality. The participants of the study are second-year students of English in one of the Nigerian Universities. The data used in the study were collected through the participants’ written persuasive essays. The essays were analyzed by highlighting all the metadiscourse used in the texts. The findings indicate that the participants’ persuasive essays have a low deployment of metadiscourse which also correlates with their persuasive writing quality. It was observed that almost all the metadiscourse markers were underutilized by the participants such as endophoric markers, evidential, code glosses, hedges and self-mention. Some other metadiscourse were left out in some of the participants' persuasive essays. The study highlights some benefits of the use of metadiscourse and some implications that would improve the teaching and learning of metadiscourse, particularly in the Nigerian setting.

Abstract:
Metadiscourse involves the interaction between the reader and the writer of the text in the overall process of communication. Metadiscourse not only guides the reader to understand the primary message of the text through structure and content, but also it intimates the reader with the particular slants and perspectives in the primary discourse. The students have to master the use of Metadiscourse in their writings. The purpose of this study is to examine the distribution and frequency of Metadiscourse features used by Pakistani undergraduate students in their argumentative essays and to analyze roles played by these particular features. Moreover, the research explores the extent of appropriateness and inappropriateness in this particular text as well. Hyland’s Interpersonal model of Metadiscourse (2005) was adapted to conduct the present study. AntConc 3.4.4 software is used for corpus analysis of the text. Findings show that Pakistani undergraduate students are more comfortable with using Interactional Metadiscourse 61% rather than Interactive dimension 39%. It has been observed that undergraduate students used high score of self-mentions 37% and engagement markers 37%. Endophoric markers were not used by these students 0%. Findings have considerable importance, as they assist the learners to figure out the problems of the students regarding the use of Metadiscourse. Trainings should be given to the students to use these features appropriately.

Abstract:
This present research aims at identifying register used in the conversations among petroleum engineers by examining the linguistic feature which is viewed from the aspect of the field, the tenor and the mode of discourse of the Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) approach. Findings show that in the field of discourse, all terms of register found in the experiential domain analysis function as technical terms, of which the two major forms of nouns and verbs (i.e., single-word and compound/phrasal word forms) are the most frequent categories identified among other kinds of technical terms. The goal orientation appears to have both short and long term while the social activity results in exchanges among participants. In the tenor of discourse, the agentive role is said to be equal and the social role is considered as non-hierarchic. The social distance within the interaction is said to be minimal which is excessively characterized by the use of informal form of expressions. In the mode of discourse, the language role exists equally of both constitutive and ancillary identified by the use of present simple tense and non-present tenses, that is, future simple, past simple and present perfect. The channel is in phonic form. The medium is in spoken with visual contact as it is largely characterized by the use of endophoric reference as well as pronouns.

Abstract:
Research on Grammatical Cohesion Analysis of Prabowo's Speech Text in the Election of Presidential Candidates and Vice-Presidential Candidates in 2019 discusses the forms of references and substitutions using the Mulyana Discourse Study theory. The aim is to describe the form of references and substitutions that are used as references to words or sentences directed by an author to indicate the direction or reference or purpose intended by the writer, so that the meaning that is to be conveyed is clearer. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative. The reason researchers used descriptive qualitative research methods in this study, because researchers describe words that include forms of reference and substitution in Prabowo's Speech Text in the Election of Presidential Candidates and Vice Presidential Candidates in 2019. Data collection is done by observation, object determination, data reading, data identification, coding, and data classification. The results of this study indicate that there are words that are included in the form of endophoric references, exophoric references, and forms of substitution. The most common data found is the grammatical aspect of exophoric reference. It can be concluded that the words used in Prabowo's speech text are many words that are repeated, so that the use in the form of references and substitutions in Prabowo's Speech Text in the Election of Presidential Candidates and Vice Presidential Candidates in 2019 is lacking in cohesion. Thus the thesis has a beneficial hope for the reader by learning more about discourse, especially grammatical cohesion, and might be better developed.

Abstract:
The article presents the results of studies of the effect of commercial disinfectants registered in Ukraine and allowed for use in beekeeping, as well as a comparative characteristic of their effectiveness in the disinfection of wooden beehive structures. The research was conducted on the basis of the departments of hygiene, sanitation and general veterinary prevention and technology of production and processing of products of small animals of the Lviv National University of Veterinary Medicine and Biotechnology named after S.Z. Gzhytskyi and SLW “Biolab” Food and Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (Ostroda, Poland). For research in the spring and summer period 4 groups of test objects were formed on the principle of analogues. Distilled water was used to control disinfection (test group 1). In the second experimental group for disinfection used “Brovadez-20” (active substance benzalkonium chloride 0.5%), in the third experimental group гру “Vetox-1000” (active substance hypochlorite 0.3%) and in the fourth experimental group – “Sumerian silver”(active ingredient of 10% citrate of Argentum citrate). In a comparative analysis of the effectiveness of the disinfectants of the II, III and IV groups, the growth of gram-positive (Streptomyces badius, Curtobakterium) and gram-negative bacteria (Xanthomonas hyacinthi, Pseudomonas alcaligenes, Acidovorax defluvii) was detected, respectively, among the endophores. In the current literature, information on the threat to the health of the honey bee detected by microorganisms is missing. According to the research, certain differences between the effectiveness of disinfectants have been established. It was found that the total microbial number (BMI) was 0.15% in group II, 0.16% in group III and up to 0.10% in group IV relative to control. It was found that the Sumer silver disinfectant at 10% concentration provides the best bactericidal effect (P < 0.001). In a comparative intergroup analysis of the effectiveness of disinfectants, it was found that in the conditions of the experiment, the level of bactericidal activity was the highest in the experiment with the SMC in the case of the use of “Sumer silver” was 32.3% and 34.4% better compared to “Brovades-20” and “Vetox-1000”, respectively. The use of “Sumerian silver” allows you to get the desired result 10 and 4 times faster than the disinfectants “Brovadez-20” and “Vetox-1000” respectively.

Abstract:
The aim of this article is to refine the role of redundancy in deferred multimodal communication, from the standpoint of both communicators and their audiences and, by extension, translators. What is advocated here is the idea of a recursive reading process consisting of three phases (perception, construction and integration) and that this process is based on the detection of a salient series of trigger stimuli that the communicator offers as incentives. The shared ground of significance of these trigger compounds actually reveals core meanings in the document, especially when there is exophoric reference. In the translation process, any change within this redundancy system, such as a modification in the balance between endophora and exophora, might alter the overall reception experience.

SummarySettling a clear distinction between pronouns (viz. relative or interrogative pronouns) and conjunctions is not very easy in many languages, peculiarly in Latin. Pronouns, conjunctions and their correlatives are derived from the same kinds of stems and they have similar uses in clauses. We propose to discriminate what we call an endophoric relation for conjunctions and what we call an exophoric relation for subordinating pronouns.

Abstract:
That demonstratives often have endophoric functions marking referents outside the physical space of interaction but accessible through cognition, especially memory, is well-known. These functions are often classified as independent from exophoric ones and are typically seen as secondary with respect to spatial deixis. However, data from multiple languages show that cognitive access to referents functions alongside of perceptual access, including vision. Cognitive access is enabled by prior interactions and prior familiarity with the referents. As a result of such interactions, the interlocutors share a great deal of knowledge about the referents, which facilitates reference to objects in the interactive field. The centrality of common ground in reference to an object at the interactive scene challenges the often assumed classification of demonstrative reference into exophoric and endophoric. I illustrate this idea throughout the paper by using first-hand data from Mano, a Mande language of Guinea. Adding another argument in favor of viewing demonstrative reference as a social, interactive process, the Mano data push the idea of salience of non-spatial parameters further and emphasizes the importance of short and long-term interactional history and cultural knowledge both for the choice of demonstratives in exophoric reference and for the structuring of the demonstrative paradigm.

AbstractThis article presents a typological characterization of a class of demonstratives so far neglected in the literature: demonstrative verbs expressing manner. First, the morphological characteristics and syntactic behaviors of these demonstratives are examined to illustrate their verbal properties and to justify categorizing them as verbs. Next, their exophoric and endophoric roles in narratives and interactions are described. As their discourse usages closely replicate that of nominal demonstratives, we argue that demonstrative verbs belong to the class of demonstratives and propose to integrate them in a general typology of demonstratives.

Abstract:
An abstract plays an important role in an article because it becomes the face of the whole paper. Besides, voluntarily or involuntarily when writing an abstract, a writer also applies metadiscourse markers to communicate effectively by organizing, interacting, and showing the stance. Thus, the application of metadiscourse in an abstract becomes an interesting object to examine. This study is aimed at examining interactive and interactional metadiscourse suggested by Hyland (2005) in 50 abstracts written by Indonesian scholars and 50 abstracts written by NES scholars, 100-250 word range, taken from TEFLIN journal and ELT journal. The results show that NES scholars apply more metadiscourse markers than Indonesian scholars (83.14 versus 76.37). NES, in details, apply more code glosses, and transition markers, while Indonesian scholars apply more frame markers and evidentials, and the similar result is found in endophoric markers (8.9 for both groups of scholars). But, from overall cases and variants, metadiscourse markers by Indonesian scholars are more varied than those of NES scholars (618 versus 559 cases, 66 versus 48 variants). Differences are mostly influenced by cultural interferences (Friedlander, 1987; Hyland, 2005; Abdi, 2009; Sanjaya et al., 2015; Mu et al., 2015). Apart from what causes the differences, the result of T-test shows that the difference in metadiscourse markers applied by both scholars is not significant. It means that metadiscourse markers applied by both groups of scholars are similar.

Abstract:
Abstract Language allows us to efficiently communicate about the things in the world around us. Seemingly simple words like this and that are a cornerstone of our capability to refer, as they contribute to guiding the attention of our addressee to the specific entity we are talking about. Such demonstratives are acquired early in life, ubiquitous in everyday talk, often closely tied to our gestural communicative abilities, and present in all spoken languages of the world. Based on a review of recent experimental work, here we introduce a new conceptual framework of demonstrative reference. In the context of this framework, we argue that several physical, psychological, and referent-intrinsic factors dynamically interact to influence whether a speaker will use one demonstrative form (e.g., this) or another (e.g., that) in a given setting. However, the relative influence of these factors themselves is argued to be a function of the cultural language setting at hand, the theory-of-mind capacities of the speaker, and the affordances of the specific context in which the speech event takes place. It is demonstrated that the framework has the potential to reconcile findings in the literature that previously seemed irreconcilable. We show that the framework may to a large extent generalize to instances of endophoric reference (e.g., anaphora) and speculate that it may also describe the specific form and kinematics a speaker’s pointing gesture takes. Testable predictions and novel research questions derived from the framework are presented and discussed.

Abstract:
Cohesion establishes the text or sentences and gives their meaning by the grammatical and lexical linking. Halliday and Hasan (1976) In Cohesion in English, identify five general categories of cohesive devices that are possibly implemented in texts: reference, ellipsis, substitution, lexical cohesion and conjunction. One of the cohesion meanings is reference. Reference is one of cohesive devices, and it contains the specific nature of the information needed to be retrieved for the comprehensive information. The problems discussed in this study are the type of reference applied in the speech transcripts and referential meaning presented in the speech transcripts of Donald Trump`s Speech. The aims of the study were to find out the reference applied in the speech transcripts and referential meaning of the reference presented in the speech transcripts. The main theory used was Theory of Cohesion proposed by Halliday and Hasan (1976). The data in this study were taken from the website of Washington Post in form of transcripts. The data were collected using observation method and analyzed using qualitative method. There were two kinds of reference found in the speech; which were personal reference and demonstrative reference. The personal reference that occurred in the speech transcript included I, you, we, he, she, they, and it. Meanwhile, the demonstrative references that appeared in the speech transcript were this, these, there, here, now and the. These references were presented as endophoric, whether anaphoric or cataphoric. The comparative reference was absent. From this study, it can be concluded that referential cohesion takes an important role in a text or in this case speech transcripts, since the function of reference is to hold a text together and give its meaning.
