Abstract:
The first chapter of this dissertation evaluates changes in fuel procurement practices by coal- and natural gas-fired electricity generating plants in the United States following state-level legislation that ended cost-of-service regulation. I construct a detailed dataset that links confidential, shipment-level data on the price of virtually all of the fuel delivered to coal- and gas-fired electricity plants in the United States from 1990-2009, with plant-level data on operations and regulatory status. I find the price of coal drops by 12% at deregulated plants relative to matched plants that were not subject to any regulatory change, whereas there was no relative drop in the price of gas. I show how my results lend support to theories of asymmetric information between generators and regulators, regulatory capture, and capital-bias as important sources of distortion under cost-of-service regulation. The second chapter analyses changes in the cost of generating electricity following the introduction of regional wholesale electricity markets. I use proxy methods based on Olley and Pakes (1996); Levinsohn and Petrin (2003) to estimate fuel-specific production functions, and construct the Olley-Pakes productivity index to decompose costs in to within-plant productivity and allocative efficiency changes. I then apply a potential outcomes framework to the derived productivity estimates, allowing the construction of counterfactual costs that explicitly account for permanent differences between market and non-market areas and common transitory shocks. I find that the introduction of market-based dispatch methods has reduced fossil-fuel production costs by upwards of 15%. The third chapter is based on joint work with Roland Fryer and Jorg Spenkuch. We develop a Roy model in which individuals sort into peer groups based on comparative advantage. Two key results emerge: First, when comparative advantage is the guiding principle of peer group organization, the effect of moving a student into an environment with higher-achieving peers depends on where in the ability distribution she falls and the effective wages that clear the social market. As a result, linear in means estimates of peer effects are not identified. We show that the model’s testable prediction in the presence of this confounding issue is borne out in two data sets.<br>Economics

Abstract:
Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) melting analysis was performed on 27 short double stranded DNA duplexes containing 15 to 25 base pairs and short single stranded overhangs from one to 10 bases, on both ends. Molecules have two 5' dangling ends or one 5' and one 3' dangling end. For these molecules the duplex region was incrementally reduced from 25 to 15 base pairs with increased length of the dangling ends from one to 10 bases. A third set of molecules contained 21 base pair duplexes with a four base dangling end on either the 5' or 3' end. Blunt ended duplexes from 15 to 25 base pairs were also examined and served as control duplexes. DSC melting curves were measured in solution containing 85 mM, 300 mM or 1.0 M Na+. From these measurements, thermodynamic parameters for 5' and 3' dangling ends as a function of end length were evaluated. Results showed the 5' ends were slightly stabilizing, and this stability was essentially constant with end length, while the 3' ends were generally destabilizing with increasing length of the end. This finding of lower stability for the 3' ends is consistent with results of published studies that have found 5' dangling ends to be more than or equally as stabilizing as 3' dangling ends. Our finding that 3' dangling ends are actually destabilizing for duplex DNA contrasts with published results. The 3' ends also display a stronger dependence on the [Na+]. In the lower Na+ environment the 3' ends are more destabilizing than at the higher salt environments. Analysis of the thermodynamic parameters of the dangling-ended duplexes as a function [Na+] indicated the 3' dangling end molecules behave differently compared to 5' dangling ended and blunt ended duplexes. The net counterion release per phosphate upon melting the molecules having one 5' and one 3' end was approximately 15% smaller as a function of end length compared to the duplex having two 5' ends. Further analysis of the DSC evaluated thermodynamic transition parameter, ΔHcal, and its relationship to the measured transition temperatures of the DNA molecules, provided an estimate on the excess heat capacity differences, ΔCp, between duplex and melted single strands for the dangling-ended molecules. The analysis revealed the molecules with one 5' and one 3' dangling end had very different ΔCp values compared to the blunt-ended molecule; while the molecules with two 5' ends have ΔCp that are essentially the same as the blunt-ended duplex. These observations are interpreted as differences in the interactions with Na+, solvent and the terminal base pairs of the duplex for the 5' versus 3' dangling ends.

Abstract:
DNA double strand breaks (DSBs ) are extremely toxic to cells because they can lead to genomic rearrangements and even cell death. Two main pathways can repair DSBs: the homologous recombination repair (HRR) pathway and the non-homologous end-joining (NHEJ) pathway. NHEJ is the primary repair pathway in mammalian cells. HRR repairs single strand breaks (SSBs) or DSBs, mostly during late S phase and G2 phase of the cell cycle, by using an undamaged copy of the DNA sequence, and is therefore largely error-free, while the NHEJ pathway repairs DSBs without the requirement for sequence homology, may be error-free or error-prone, and is most active during G1 phase. Thymine glycol (Tg), the most common oxidation product of thymine. It produced endogenously as a consequence of aerobic metabolism or via exogenous factors such as ionizing radiation (IR), it is one of the predominant types of base modifications produced by ionizing radiation. Due to clustering of radiation – induced ionizations, Many DSBs induced by ionizing radiation bear damaged bases, including (Tg) moieties at or near the DSB ends that may interfere with subsequent gap filling and ligation. Artemis is a nuclease that is involved in the processing of termini during repair of DSBs and in modifying termini of complex DSBs. It has 5′–3′ exonuclease activity specific for single- stranded DNA, but, in the presence of DNA-PK, Artemis demonstrates endonuclease activity that is utilized in the removal of 3′ phosphoglycolate termini and 5′ overhangs, in the shortening of 3′ overhangs at DSBs, and in the opening of hairpin ends. To assess the ability of NHEJ to rejoin DSBs accompanied by Tg lesions and to elucidate the aspects of the possible role of Artemis in DSB repair, linearized plasmids with Tg either at the 3’ terminus of a blunt end (designated Tg1) or three or two bases from the end (Tg3 and Tg2, respectively), were subjected to a repair assay using XRCC4-like factor (XLF) deficient cell extracts, with or without the addition of XLF and/or Artemis, EndoIII and ddTTP. The data indicated that, the cell extract could ligate the plasmids with Tg1 and Tg2 with extremely low efficiency but could repair plasmid with Tg3 as efficiently as unmodified plasmid. In addition, Plasmids with Tg1and Tg2 were treated with Endonuclease III and ddTTP to test whether the end joining occurred before or after Tg removing, neither one had any effects on plasmids with Tg1. However, plasmids with Tg2 showed reduced in the intensity upon treatment with Endonucleases III and ddTTP, which suggested some ligation occur while Tg still present. In Artemis reaction, substrate with Tg2 and Tg3 could stimulate Artemis mediated trimming but not Tg1. Addition of EndoIII or ddTTP to plasmid with Tg3 resulted in a significant decrease in the intensities of the bandsrepresenting ligated products compared to XLF alone, suggesting that in some of the ligated products Tg are still present, while in others Tg had been removed and replaced by polymerization with normal nucleotides. Taken together, our results indicated that cell extract could ligate the plasmid with Tg located at the third base to DSB with high efficiency compared to plasmids with Tg1 and Tg2 which apparently this ability was severely inhibited when it located at or in the second position to DSB ends. Moreover, Artemis is also capable of trimming of thymine glycol at the second or third position from DSB ends with limited capability but inhibited by the presence of thymine glycol at the break site.

Les préoccupations actuelles concernant l'exploitation sécuritaire des centrales nucléaires existantes et la conception d’architectures spéciales envisagées pour la quatrième génération de réacteurs nucléaires se combinent avec l’intérêt plus prononcé pour l'efficacité et la fiabilité de l'équipement d'un système énergétique. Cela fait que dans un souci de meilleure compréhension et optimisation basée sur des moyens modernes de conception assistée par l’ordinateur, l'étude de différentes parties de ces systèmes fait de plus en plus l’objet de recherches approfondies. . Parmi les types proposés pour la quatrième génération de réacteurs nucléaires font partie ceux ayant comme agent de refroidissement les sels fondus, respectivement le sodium fondu. En raison de leurs propriétés physiques, les sels fondus et le sodium liquide ont le potentiel d'être déplacés par les pompes électromagnétiques. Cet ouvrage est à la fois une étude approfondie des phénomènes qui se produisent en raison de l'écoulement du fluide dans le champ électromagnétique d’une pompe électromagnétique - interaction magnétohydrodynamique - et un rapport sur les capacités et les avantages des outils informatiques modernes pour faciliter la conception et l'optimisation des pompes électromagnétiques. Afin d’atteindre l'objectif principal de la thèse, notamment une meilleure compréhension des phénomènes interdépendants spécifique à l’opération des pompes électromagnétiques, deux objectifs secondaires ont été considérés. Le premier objectif concerne la pleine exploitation des modèles électromagnétiques numériques en éléments finis afin d'obtenir autant d'informations que possible sur le comportement des pompes électromagnétiques, dans l’hypothèse où on ne tient pas compte de l'écoulement des fluides. Le deuxième objectif était la construction des modèles numériques qui réunissent l’électromagnétisme et la dynamique des fluides, respectivement des modèles numériques qui regroupent les deux phénomènes caractérisant l’écoulement magnétohydrodynamique dans les canaux des pompes électromagnétiques. Dans l'étude dédiée au pompage électromagnétique de sels fondus, la thèse met en évidence des problèmes spécifiques liés à la génération de forces électromagnétiques dans les fluides faibles conducteurs d'électricité et fournit des résultats sur les applications où le pompage électromagnétique de sels fondus peut être efficace. À l’aide des modèles électromagnétiques nous avons obtenu des informations importantes sur l'influence du nombre de pôles électromagnétiques et de la fréquence d’alimentation sur la caractéristique Pression - Vitesse des pompes annulaires à induction. Ils ont été analysés le phénomène de blindage créé par les parois métalliques - avec des répercussions négatives sur les performances de la pompe, les effets de freinage exercés à l'entrée et à la sortie du canal de la pompe et la relation entre la capacité de surcharge hydrodynamique et la caractéristique Pression - Vitesse des pompes à induction. Une section spéciale a été consacrée à l'analyse de la dépendance de la force électromagnétique du temps et de l’espace et à l’étude de non-uniformitées des quantités de nature électromagnétique en direction azimutale dans les pompes annulaires à induction.Dans le chapitre qui traite de l'interaction magnétohydrodynamique à base de modèles couplés, ils sont proposés deux modèles qui couplent l'électromagnétisme et l’écoulement. Ils sont présentés les avantages des modèles couplés, en matière de la précision des résultats, par rapport aux modèles électromagnétiques. Il est également présenté l'évolution des profils de vitesse, de densité de force et de courant sous l'influence du champ électromagnétique et de l’écoulement de sodium à vitesses différentes. Les contributions de la thèse sont complétées par des observations importantes sur les méthodes de travail et les logiciels utilisés tout au long de l'étude<br>The actual concerns with respect to safe operation of existing nuclear plants and to designing special architectures envisaged for the fourth generation of nuclear reactors, corroborated with the increasing interest for efficiency and reliability of any equipment belonging to an energetic system, make that more and more research endeavors to be devoted to the study of various parts of these systems for a better understanding and optimization based on modern techniques of computer aided design. Among the types proposed for the fourth generation of nuclear reactors belong those that have as cooling agent molten salts, respectively liquid sodium. Many reactors of previous generations use mechanical pumps of special design for driving the coolants. Molten salts and liquid sodium, thanks to their physical properties, have the potential to be driven using electromagnetic pumps. Although the technology of electromagnetic pumping of electroconductive fluids was developed since the first half of the last century, currently it undergoes a revival due to the reconsideration of its multiple technological and security advantages. This work is both an intimate study of the phenomena that occur as a result of the electroconductive fluids flow in the electromagnetic field of an electromagnetic pump – magnetohydrodynamic interaction - and a report on the capabilities and advantages of modern computational tools to facilitate design and optimization of electromagnetic pumps.To achieve the principal goal of deeper understanding of the interdependent phenomena specific to electromagnetic pumps operation, two auxiliary objectives were considered. The first is related to the full exploitation of electromagnetic finite element models in order to retrieve as much information as possible about electromagnetic pumps behavior in a simplifying hypothesis that does not take into account the fluid dynamics. The second auxiliary objective is to build numerical models that couple the electromagnetism and the fluid dynamics, namely the two interdependent physics that govern the magnetohydrodynamic flow through channels of electromagnetic pumps.In the section dealing with the study of electromagnetic pumping of molten salts, the thesis highlights specific problems related the generation of electromagnetic forces in fluids with low electrical conductivity and provides results with respect to applications where electromagnetic pumping of molten salts can be effective. With the electromagnetic numerical models were obtained important data about the influence of the number of electromagnetic poles and supply frequency on the Pressure – Velocity characteristic of annular linear induction pumps. Were analyzed the shielding effect generated by the metallic walls - with negative repercussions on pumps performances, braking effects exerted at pump inlet and pump outlet and the connection between the overload capacity and Pressure – Velocity characteristic of induction pumps. A special portion was devoted to the analysis of the time and space dependence of the electromagnetic force and to the study of the non-uniformities of electromagnetic quantities in azimuth direction of annular linear induction pumps.In the chapter devoted to the magnetohydrodynamic interaction through coupled models, the thesis proposes two models that couple the electromagnetism and the fluid flow, one realized using multiphysic software and the second by coupling two different softwares. There are presented the advantages of the coupled models with respect to the results accuracy in comparison with electromagnetic models. It is presented the evolution of velocity, force and current densities profiles under the influence of the electromagnetic field and of different sodium mean velocities.The contributions of the thesis are completed with significant observations related to the study methods and software tools used along the study process<br>Preocupările actuale în legătură cu exploatarea în siguranță a centralelor nucleare existente și în legătură cu proiectarea arhitecturilor speciale de reactoare nucleare pentru generația a patra,coroborate cu interesul tot mai pronunțat pentru eficiența și fiabilitatea oricărui echipament dintr-un sistem energetic, fac ca tot mai multe demersuri de cercetare să se îndrepte spre studiul diverselor subansamble ale acestor sisteme pentru o mai buna înțelegere și optimizare pe baza mijloacelor moderne de proiectare asistată de calculator. Din rândul tipurilor propuse pentru generația a patra de reactoare nucleare fac parte și cele care au ca agent de răcire săruri topite, respectiv sodiu topit. Multe reactoare nucleare de generație anterioară folosesc ca mijloc de antrenare a fluidelor de răcire pompe mecanice de construcție specială. Sărurile topite ăi sodiul lichid, datorită proprietăților fizice,au potențialul de a fi recirculate cu ajutorul pompelor electromagnetice. Deși tehnologia pompării electromagnetice a fluidelor electroconductoare a fost dezvoltată încă din prima parte a secolului trecut, în prezent cunoaște o renaștere datorită reconsiderării multiplelor avantaje tehnologice și de securitate în exploatare. Lucrarea de față este atât un studiu al fenomenelor intime ce au loc ca urmare a curgerii fluidelor electroconductoare în câmpul electromagnetic al pompelor electromagnetice – interacțiune magnetohidrodinamică - cât și un raport despre capabilitățile și avantajele uneltelor moderne de calcul de a înlesni proiectarea și optimizarea pompelor electromagnetice. Pentru a atinge scopul principal al tezei, și anume o înțelegere mai adâncă a fenomenelor interdependente specifice funcționării pompelor electromagnetice, au fost considerate două obiective secundare. Primul obiectiv se referă la exploatarea la maximum a modelelor electromagnetice numerice în element finit cu scopul de a obține cât mai multe informații cu putință despre comportamentul pompelor electromagnetice în ipoteza care nu ia în considerare curgerea fluidelor. Al doilea obiectiv a fost construirea unor modele numerice care cuplează electromagnetismul și curgerea, respectiv, cuplează modelele numerice ale celor două fenomene ce caracterizează curgerea magnetohidrodinamică din canalele pompelor electromagnetice. În partea dedicată studiului pompării electromagnetice a sărurilor topite, teza evidențiază problemele specifice legate de generarea forțelor electromagnetice în fluide slab conductoare electric și oferă rezultate cu privire la aplicațiile unde pomparea electromagnetică a sărurilor topite poate fi eficientă. Cu ajutorul modelelor electromagnetice s-au obținut date importante despre influența numărului de poli electromagnetici și frecvența de alimentare asupra caracteristicii Presiune – Viteză a pompelor electromagnetice inelare de inducție. Au fost analizate fenomenul de ecranare creat de peretii metalici – cu repercursiuni negative asupra performanțelor pompelor, efectele de frânare exercitate la intrarea și la ieșirea din canalul de pompare și legătura dintre capacitatea de suprasarcină hidrodinamică și caracteristica Presiune – Viteză a pompelor de inducție. O secțiune specială a fost consacrată analizei dependenței de timp și a variației de la punct la punct a forței electromagnetice, precum și studiului neuniformităților mărimilor de natură electromagnetic în direcție azimutală în pompele inelare de inducție. În capitolul despre interacțiunea magnetohidrodinamică pe baza modelelor cuplate, se propun două modele ce cuplează electromagnetismul și curgerea fluidelor, unul realizat cu ajutorul unui singur software și al doilea realizat prin cuplarea a două software-uri diferite. Abstract:
Despite the scientific, technological and surgical improvements of the past 50 years organ dysfunction following elective paediatric cardiac surgery utilising cardiopulmonary bypass continues to account for increased complications, often leading to a protracted course in hospital with a longer stay in intensive care and the potential for irreversible organ damage long term. Furthermore, paediatric cardiac surgeons are routinely undertaking more complex operations with a shift from palliation to early correction. This has resulted in younger children being subjected to longer periods on the bypass machine with increased effects on vital organs. This thesis describes two clinical studies designed to further assess and characterise peri-operative cardiac, renal and pulmonary function in children undergoing elective cardiac repair at a tertiary referral centre in Scotland, UK. In the first instance a prospective, observational study was undertaken in forty-five children to examine the use of tissue Doppler imaging in the assessment of peri-operative cardiac function, its relationship to myocardial injury and clinical outcome. Tissue Doppler parameters were obtained using a Vivid 7 ultrasound scanner with a 7-MHz probe pre-operatively, on admission to paediatric intensive care and on day one. Myocardial injury was assessed using Troponin-I on the first post-operative day by a commercially available chemiluminescent immunoassay. In twenty children within this group peri-operative renal function was also investigated using standard estimates of glomerular filtration rate, namely creatinine clearance measured by the kinetic Jaffe method during the first and second twelve hour post-operative periods, in comparison to serum creatinine and the novel biomarker cystatin C. Routine plasma retained pre-operatively and on days 0, 1, 2 and 3 post-operatively was used to measure serum cystatin C and creatinine using a particle-enhanced nephelometric immunoassay and the Roche Creatinine Plus enzymatic assay respectively. The association between cystatin C and recorded perfusion parameters including bypass duration, pump flow, haematocrit, oxygen delivery and Troponin-I was investigated. Peri-operative pulmonary function was evaluated through a phase IV, randomised, double-blind, placebo controlled trial. In total, twenty four children were randomised to receive oral sildenafil or equivalent volume placebo four times the day before surgery. Blood samples were collected peri-operatively to measure serum cyclic guanosine monophosphate with a commercially available competitive enzyme immunoassay. Haemodynamic data and echocardiography were acquired at two and twenty four hours post-operatively including pulmonary vascular resistance index and bi-ventricular contractility. Post-operative oxygenation was also determined at the same time by oxygen delivery and oxygenation index. In Chapter 2, peri-operative cardiac function as assessed by tissue Doppler imaging was examined. The results of this study demonstrated that pre-operatively, bi-ventricular systolic function in the study group was reduced compared with normal controls, displaying a significant step-wise decrease with increasing complexity of lesion. This picture persisted post-operatively predominantly in the right ventricle and was significantly associated with the extent of myocardial injury. Impaired peri-operative left ventricular function correlated with clinical outcomes. In Chapter 3, peri-operative renal function as assessed by cystatin C and its association with parameters of perfusion was examined. The results of this study demonstrated that in comparison to serum creatinine, cystatin C had a superior correlation with glomerular filtration rate in the early post-operative period. An elevated level of this biomarker was significantly associated with bypass duration, minimum pump flow and post-operative myocardial injury. Haematocrit was not directly linked to renal dysfunction in this study although evidence of a critical dysoxic threshold within the kidney was suggested indirectly through oxygen delivery calculations. In Chapter 4, peri-operative pulmonary function and vascular reactivity in association with the pre-operative administration of oral sildenafil (0.5mg/kg, six hourly) was examined. The results of this trial demonstrated that compared to placebo, pre-operative sildenafil resulted in modest elevations of serum cyclic guanosine monophosphate, limited effects on pulmonary vascular resistance index, significant reductions in peri-operative bi-ventricular contractility, significant reductions in post-operative oxygen delivery and a trend for increasing ventilatory support. In summary, the current thesis has demonstrated that in children undergoing corrective cardiac surgery peri-operative bi-ventricular function can be accurately assessed by tissue Doppler imaging which to date has had limited use in this patient group. With regards to renal function, cystatin C was shown to be a better estimate of glomerular filtration rate and a more sensitive marker of early renal dysfunction in children after surgery. Furthermore, cystatin C identified a transient post-operative renal impairment, the magnitude of which was associated with duration of bypass, pump flow and myocardial injury. In relation to pulmonary function, this research identified that pre-operative administration of oral sildenafil to children undergoing cardiac surgery produced limited effects on pulmonary vascular resistance but was associated with reduced ventricular contractility and post-operative oxygenation raising significant concerns over its routine clinical use.

Many automotive systems are real-time systems, which means that not only correct operationsbut also appropriate timings are their main requirements. Considering the in uence that end-to-end delay might have on the performance of the systems, the calculation of it is of necessity.Abundant techniques have actually been proposed, and some of them have already been applied intopractical systems. In spite of this, some further work still needs to be done. The target of thisthesis is to evaluate and compare two end-to-end timing analysis methods from dierent aspectssuch as data age, consumption time, and then decide which method is a prior choice for end-to-end timing analysis. The experiments can be divided into three blocks, system generation andend-to-end delay calculation by two methods respectively. The experiments focus on two kinds ofperformance parameters, data age and the consumption time that these two methods cost duringtheir execution. By changing the system generating parameters like task number and periods, thechanges of performances of the two methods are analyzed. The performances of the two dierentmethods are also compared when they are applied into the same automotive systems. According tothe results of the experiments, the second method can calculate more accurate data age and consumeless time than the rst method does.

This thesis is concerned with the characterisation of the flow behaviour of inelastic and viscoelastic fluids in steady shear and oscillatory shear flows on commercially available rheometers. The first part of this thesis is concerned with a linear viscoelastic theory to describe the oscillatory shear flow behaviour of fluids on a Weissenberg rheogoniometer. A fluid inertia perturbation analysis is used to produce analytical formulae for correcting complex viscosity data for first and second order fluid inertia effects. In order to validate the perturbation theory we perform a simulation of the oscillatory shear flow behaviour of Newtonian and single element Maxwell fluids on a Weissenberg rheogoniometer. A theoretical prediction of end effects and fluid inertia effects on steady shear viscosity measurements of Newtonian fluids in a recessed concentric cylinder geometry is developed for a GSR controlled stress rheometer and a Weissenberg rheogoniometer. The relevant equations are solved using a perturbation analysis which is valid for low Reynolds number flows. From this theory correction formulae are produced to compensate for end effects and second order fluid inertia effects in steady shear flows on these instruments. End effects and fluid inertia effects are also investigated for power law shear thinning fluids. The final part of the thesis is concerned with a theoretical prediction of the end effect of a recessed concentric cylinder geometry on complex viscosity measurements of a generalised linear viscoelastic fluid. The linear viscoelastic theory is carried out for oscillatory shear flows on a CSR controlled stress rheometer and a Weissenberg rheogoniometer. A fluid inertia perturbation analysis is used to produce analytical formulae to correct complex viscosity data for end effects and second order fluid inertia effects. Numerically simulated oscillatory shear data is used to establish the limitations of the second order fluid inertia correction formulae which include end effects.

The purpose of this quasi-experimental study was to assess the ongoing impact of the End-of-Life Nursing Education Consortium (ELNEC) training program on registered nurses’ death anxiety, concerns about dying, and knowledge of the dying process utilizing the principles of The Comfort Theory and Practice by Kolcaba (2003) at the institutional level. The research hypothesis was upon completion of the ELNEC training, registered nurses would have decreased death anxiety, less concerns about dying, and increased knowledge of the dying process. The Revised Death Anxiety Scale (RDAS) was used to measure death anxiety which is a 25 item self-report questionnaire. The Concerns about Dying Instrument (CAD) was used to measure death attitude or concerns about dying which includes three distinct but related areas for providers: general concern about death, spirituality, and concerns about working with dying patients. Participant's perceived knowledge of dying was measured using a self report 5-point Likert format with “0“ indicating no level of knowledge to “4“ reflecting complete knowledge of death and dying. Pre-tests of all dependent variables were administered to both a treatment and control group. Post-tests were administered two weeks after the two day ELNEC training, at 6 months, and finally at 12 months to both groups in order to study its lasting efficiency upon participants at one primary care medical center. Thirty eight participants completed all four questionnaires with 27 participants in the control group and 11 participants in the experimental group. Matched pair analysis with 11 participants in each group was conducted with statistical significance found for perceived knowledge about dying at post two weeks and 12 months (p= 0.01) for the intervention group. Death anxiety and concerns about dying were not found to be statistically significant at any testing interval, but mean scores of the treatment group revealed less death anxiety and concerns about dying. Recommendations included offering the ELNEC training on a routine basis to all registered nurses who care for dying patients. Additionally, clinicians and administrators were encouraged to seek out additional funding opportunities to plan more robust studies with larger samples, incentives, and research method triangulation addressing the qualitative aspects of palliative care.<br>Ph. Shear walls are one of the most effective methods of resisting these lateral forces caused by seismic or wind load. The placement of these walls can be very influential on how the structure behaves. Since the end return of a shear wall is perpendicular to the lateral force, it is neglected for the purpose of resisting later force. This study will investigate whether or not the effect of end return on the rigidity of shear walls can be neglected. Two different building frames will be modeled using Finite Element Analysis software to see how they behave differently. Hand calculations will also be incorporated to check and verify the results obtained by the computer models. The moment of inertia is expected to be an important factor calculating the deflection of the shear wall due to bending, and the end return may significantly impact the magnitude of the moment of inertia. The objective of this study is to determine the effect of the end return on the rigidity of a shear wall.

<p>Differences in the aerodynamic performance data obtained at different test facilities were observed for the Wortmann FX-63-l37 airfoil. Earlier investigations found that the size of the hysteresis loop was affected by the tunnel environment and that single strut mounting of a three dimensional wing model interfered negligibly with the wing. Theoretical and experimental evaluations of a half wing model mounted with an end plate gap were done. Vortex panel method was used in the theoretical evaluation. The results from this indicated an effect of reduced aspect ratio with increase in end plate gap size.</p> <p>Tests were conducted in the VPI Stability Tunnel at low Reynolds numbers for different gap sizes including sealed gap. Results from the experiments showed that even very small gaps produce substantial changes in zero lift angle of attack (αu) and the change in αu, was reduced as Reynolds number increased. Sealed gap test results did not show such a behavior. Flow visualization of the flow through the gap showed a significant flow through the gap even at very low Reynolds number and small gap size.</p><br>Master of Science

Thesis (PhD (Physics))--University of Stellenbosch, 2010.<br>ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The output power of end-pumped lasers is mainly limited by thermal effects in the bulk crystal gain material. The thermal effects either fracture the crystal or cause degradation in the laser beam quality and output power. This is especially pronounced in Nd:YVO4 and Nd:GdVO4 which exhibit strong thermal lensing. These two Nd3+ vanadate materials are of great value because of their high emission cross sections which makes them excellent gain materials for mode-locked, high repetition rate Q-switched and intra-cavity frequency doubled lasers. The two Nd3+ vanadates have very similar spectral properties but many publications claim that the more expensive Nd:GdVO4 is thermo-optically superior to Nd:YVO4. However, a debate ensued after theoretical calculations as well as measurements of the thermal conductivity and thermo-optical coefficients indicated that the opposite is true. To our knowledge there has never been a direct comparison of the thermal lensing of these two materials under identical pumping and lasing conditions. In order to contribute to the debate we did such measurements for different crystals of these two materials with equal low doping using three different measurement methods. We subsequently determined that Nd:YVO4 has slightly lower thermal lensing for the stronger gain -polarisation. One of the measurement methods we used is a novel more reproducible one that we developed for this purpose. It is more reproducible because it selectively measures only the focal length of the central, relatively unaberrated part of the thermal lens. Another measurement, utilising a probe beam through the laser crystal, found that there was almost no increase in the temperature when lasing is interrupted. This indicated that there is almost no upconversion present in the crystals which is probably due to their optimally chosen low doping. A further consequence of the vanadate debate is that there is still confusion about the value of the important thermo-optical coefficient for the higher gain -polarisation (dne/dT ) of Nd:YVO4. This parameter is of great importance in thermal calculations since the strength of the thermal lens is largely dependent on it. We therefore numerically modelled the thermal lensing in our crystals using different dne/dT values and found that the value given by Sato & Taira (2007) matches our experimental results the best. Our measurements also indicated that the thermal lens dioptric power increased nonlinearly with pump power. This appeared to contradict theory of thermal lensing since we knew that there was no upconversion in the crystals (which is the standard explanation for the nonlinear increase). We proceeded to use our numerical modelling to identify the main source of the nonlinear increase as the varying spectral output of the diode pump laser. The findings in this thesis therefore extend knowledge of the thermo-optical properties of the vanadates and increase understanding of the strongly aberrated thermal lenses formed inside them. Furthermore, the findings now enable the power-scaling of end-pumped vanadates lasers to higher levels.<br>AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die uitset drywing van longitudinale-gepompte vaste-toestand lasers word hoofsaaklik beperk deur termiese effekte in die laser kristal. Sover ons weet is daar nog geen direkte vergelyking van die termiese lens in hierdie twee materiale onder identiese kondisies gedoen nie. Ons het dus so ’n meting aangepak vir kristalle met identiese lae konsentrasie van die Nd3+ ioon deur drie verskillende meet metodes te gebruik. Een van die meet metodes is ’n nuwe, meer reproduseerbare metode wat ons ontwikkel het vir hierdie doel. Dit is meer reproduseerbaar omdat dit slegs die binneste deel van die termiese lens meet wat min sferiese aberrasie het. ’n Ander meeting, wat ’n toets-bundel deur die kristal stuur, het getoon dat daar byna geen verhoging in die die temperatuur van die kristal was toe ossilasie in die resonator onderbreek was nie. Dit is ’n aanduiding dat dat daar byna geen op-omskepping teenwoordig is in die kristalle nie wat te danke is aan hul optimale lae konsentrasie van die Nd3+ ioon. ’n Verdere gevolg van die debat is dat daar nog verwarring in die literatuur bestaan oor die waarde van Nd:YVO4 se termo-optiese dne/dT koeffisi¨ent. Hierdie parameter is van groot belang in berekinge van die termiese lens se fokale lengte vir die ho¨er wins -polarisasie. Deur numeriese modellering te gebruik het ons bevind dat die waarde wat verskaf word deur Sato & Taira (2007) ons eksperimentele data die beste pas. Ons metings het ook aangedui dat die dioptriese krag van die termiese lens nie linie¨er toeneem ten opsigte van die geabsorbeerde pomp krag nie. Dit was o¨enskynlik teenstryding met teorie oor termiese lense. Dit is omdat ons bevestig het dat daar geen op-omskepping in die kristalle teenwoordig was nie, wat die standaard verklaring vir die nie linie¨eriteit is. Ons het dus ons numeriese modellering gebruik om die hoofbron van die nie-lini¨ere toename te identifiseer as die veranderende spektrale uitset van die diode pomp laser. Closed-end funds’ (CEF) discount and discount fluctuations have been puzzling researchers for decades. Up to date, there are no multidimensional or cross-sectional variables that have been proved to influence CEFs simultaneously. Fact is that, earlier research and theories on the subject are contradictious and several suggestions on the origin of the CEF’s discount and its fluctuations have been proposed. To mention a few, investor sentiments, taxation issues, dividend policies, agency costs and agency problems are considered to influence these discounts. The purpose of this report is to examine the relationship between micro- and macroeconomic variables fluctuations, and how these can explain the discount fluctuation of the Swedish CEFs. This report focuses upon the CEFs traded at NASDAQ OMX Stockholm, which have been selected through a comprehensive multistage selection process. 10 CEFs were selected. Monthly data for calculating micro- and macroeconomic variables was collected for the period March 2003 – February 2013, which resulted in approximately 1 200 observations. OLS regression analysis, Fixed- and Random Effect Models and Hausman tests were conducted. The findings conclude that some of this report’s chosen micro- and macro variables influence on the Swedish CEFs’ discount fluctuation, although these findings are conditioned. The CEFs’ individual characteristics or traits result in a significant impact on the fluctuation of CEFs’ discount. Hence, only by controlling these characteristics, multidimensional or cross-sectional micro- and macroeconomic variables can be proved to affect the CEFs’ discount fluctuation.

Application hosting is becoming a popular business, Application Service Providers (ASPs) need however to keep up with the increasing pace of the market. This implies that they have to provide infrastructure to an increasing number of clients, and at the same time give QoS guarantees to these clients. One solution for ASPs to both guarantee a certain service level (QoS) for their clients and keep expanding would be to have so many resources as to be able to provide more than the maximum aggregate need of their clients. This may turn out to be an expensive or even an impossible solution - sharing infrastructure between clients and offering some means of resource reservation, and using charging to insure that clients only reserve the resources they need, is an alternative. It is however not an easy problem to solve, particularly if the procedure of adding new clients is to be automated, and the resources dynamically allocated. The ICorpMaker framework being developed at the IBM Zurich Research Laboratory offers a solution to the above named problems. In the ICorpMaker framework dynamic resource allocation is achieved by letting clients modify the amount of resources allocated to them in a simple manner, requesting more or less resources than their current allotment. The difficulty in achieving the end-to-end performance the client desires, lies in the fact that it is not certain how modifying resource allocation at the network respectively server level will combine and affect the end-to-end performance experienced by the end users of the service. The aim of this thesis project was to study the correlation between different network and server QoS parameters and the resulting end-to-end performance by making measurements. The results obtained from these measurements give an answer to the question of how to change the network and server resource allocations, when a client's application does not perform in a satisfactory way and hence the client requests more resources. Certain optimizations for the resource (re)allocation were also suggested based on the results.

Abstract:
Increasing age is the single biggest independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease, which is in turn the leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Ageing is associated with hypertension and metabolic changes which all increase the risk of the development of cardiovascular disease. In young, healthy individuals, perivascular adipose tissue (PVAT) secretes factors that can influence vascular contractility, exerting a net anti-contractile effect against numerous vasoconstrictors including the thromboxane A2 mimetic U46619 and α1-adrenoceptor phenylephrine. Whilst it is known that dysfunction in PVAT can contribute to obesity-related hypertension, little is known whether similar dysfunction occurs with ageing. In young Wistar rats, wire myography and pharmacological studies showed that the anti-contractile effect of PVAT in the presence of U46619 is dependent on both PVAT-derived nitric oxide and prostaglandins, whereas the anti-contractile effect in the presence of phenylephrine is nitric oxide independent. This finding was supported by Western blot experiments that showed increased phosphorylation of endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) in PVAT following U46619 incubation, but not phenylephrine. In the Wistar rat model of ageing used, wire myograph studies revealed that the PVAT anti-contractile effect in the presence of phenylephrine is preserved at 24 months of age, but in in the presence of U46619 is lost. Furthermore PVAT from aged animals had a deleterious effect on endothelial function, suggesting changes in its secreted factors. These changes are accompanied by alterations in the expression and activation of key enzymes in the nitric oxide synthesis pathway within the PVAT as measured by Western blot, as well as alterations in cardiometabolic phenotype including hypertension, hyperglycaemia and insulin resistance. Taken together these findings suggest that previously unidentified age-related PVAT dysfunction may contribute to age-related hypertension and thus may provide a potential therapeutic target for future study.

<p>Because of increasing environmental demands, especially on dealing with products end of life phase, product manufacturers and designers must consider the future disposal of their products. For conventional materials like steel and aluminium well-functioning recycling methods exists. This is not the case for structures of polymer composites, which are used more extensively, especially for structures like vehicles and vessels. Several techniques do exist but they are not yet commercially available. The current disposal methods of polymer composites are landfill and incineration.</p><p>Polymer composites are materials, which consist of several materials like fibre, matrix, and additives. In the form of sandwich constructions also foam core material is added. This circumstance complicates the waste treatment of composite materials. In this thesis a model for assessing possible future waste treatment techniques for polymer composites including sandwich structures is presented. The model is meant to be used as an aid for preparing future disposal for end of life products for planning waste treatment and for facilitating communication in contacts with waste receivers.</p><p>Recommendations for waste treatment have been formed for a number of polymer composites. These recommendations are based on the analysis of costs and environmental effects and they compare different scenarios for mechanical material recycling and energy recovery by waste incineration. The result of this study points out material recycling as the preferable method for the main part of the studied materials. But this recommendation is strongly dependent on type of virgin material replaced by the recycled material. Energy recovery can also be considered if the polymer composite waste replaces coal, which is non renewable. Though incineration will always result in a cost for the waste producer.</p><p>In the recommendations mentioned above no information concerning implementation of the different waste disposal techniques is included. Therefore, in this study a model for assessing possible waste disposal techniques for polymer composites is presented. The model is based on internal factors, which are related to the waste and to the processes. To implement the model relevant waste properties must be identified in order to fulfil the conditions set by the required processes involved.</p><p>A case study was carried out using the proposed model for assessing different waste disposal techniques for the hull of the Visby Class Corvette in the Royal Swedish Navy. Six different techniques were studied for the hull structure. Since almost all the important waste properties were known and the waste was assessed to be treatable all the included techniques except one are shown to be usable in the future.</p><p>Many investigations have pointed out material recycling as the best alternative considering environmental effects. This is also valid for polymer composite materials. Since recycling polymer composites is a complicated process, especially recycling thermoset composite it is important to aquire comprehensive information about the constituents of these materials.</p>

Traditionally, robots have been formed from heavy rigid materials and have used stiff actuator technologies. This means they are not well suited to operation near humans due to the associated high risk of injury, should a collision occur. Additionally, rigid robots are not well suited to operation in an unstructured environment where they may come into contact with obstacles. Furthermore, traditional stiff robots can struggle to grasp delicate objects as high localised forces can damage the item being held. The relatively new field of soft robotics is inspired by nature, particularly animals which do not have skeletons but which still have the ability to move and grasp in a skilful manner. Soft robotics seeks to replicate this ability through the use of new actuation technologies and materials. This research presents the design of a variable stiffness, soft, three-fingered dexterous gripper. The gripper uses contractor pneumatic muscles to control the motion of soft fingers. The soft nature of the gripper means it can deform if it collides with obstacles, and because grasping forces are spread over a larger area the chance of damaging the object being held is reduced. The gripper has the ability to vary its stiffness depending upon how it is to be used, and in this regard two methods of varying the stiffness are explored. In the first method, the finger is formed from an extensor muscle which acts antagonistically against the contractor muscles. Increasing the total pressure in the system increases the stiffness of the fingers. The second approach uses granular jamming to vary the stiffness of the actual finger structure. This thesis explores the behaviour of both extensor and contractor pneumatic muscles and develops a new simplified mathematical model of the actuator’s behaviour. The two methods of stiffness variation are then assessed experimentally. A number of multi-fingered grippers are then designed and their kinematics determined before prototypes are presented. Control of the grippers was then explored, along with the ability to adjust the stiffness of the grasp.

Abstract:
A testing procedure was developed to measure the effectiveness of tension proof testing, given that the gripped ends of the lumber do not fully experience the proof stress during a tension proof test. First the middle portion of each 14-foot 2X6 No 2 KDIS Southern Pine lumber specimen was tension proof tested, as if the pieces were only 10 feet long. Then the pips of the testing machine were moved out so that the entire middle 10-foot, section including the portions that had been gripped during the initial proof test would be fully stressed during a second tension test Some specimens, referred to as falldown, were broken in the second test at a load level below the proof load. This indicates that because of the effect of gripped ends the, initial proof test was ineffective in destroying some pieces of lumber with tension strength below the proof load level. The experimental design and analysis were aimed at validating the Showalter et al. (1987) tensile strength - length effect model as adapted to this specialized problem. Although the model predicted that falldown would occur, it was unable to predict the amounts of falldown subsequent to the amounts of proof-test breakage occurring for a sample of lumber. Through the use of end-grading rules, falldown amounts can be reduced to acceptable levels. A method was proposed for developing end-grading rules and deriving concomitant allowable tension stresses for proof-tested lumber. A significant finding was that the histogram for the tension strength of the surviving end-graded lumber had an abruptly-ending left tail, indicating that there were no severely reduced tension strength values for any of the falldown specimens remaining in the sample.<br>Master of Science

Abstract:
Unique to the sense of touch is that it is created through physical interaction. Through exploring the world with our skin we discover its properties, its shape, textures and materials, allowing us to meaningfully interact with it. This places great emphasis on the mechanical properties of our skin, the organ of touch, and no more so than the 'glabrous' skin of the finger pads and palms of our hands. Through a wide and multi-disciplinary review of touch, and observations of the macro and microstrutures of glabrous skin, this thesis develops an understanding of the key mechanical properties of this specialised skin, and presents a new hypothesis for the existence of an edge-encoding functional morphology. This thesis presents significant benefits to tactile end effector design that can be gained through mimicking the key mechanical structures of human glabrous skin. A new tactile end-effector design is presented and tested, which successfully demonstrates the capture of these key functional properties, creating a highly sensitive and accurate extraction of tactile features from a touched scene. This prototype device is both a practical and highly capable tactile sensing end effector. It achieves significant levels of compliance, sensitivity, contact surface area and strength for practical use in active exploration, and in grasping and manipulation of objects. The prototype device is strong, robust, reliable, simple and cheap to manufacture

This thesis designed and realized a two-degree of freedom wrist and two finger manipulator that completes the six-degree of freedom Sensitive Manipulation Platform, the arm of which was previously developed. This platform extends the previous research in the field of robotics by covering not only the end effector with deformable tactile sensors, but also the links of the arm. Having tactile sensors on the arm will improve the dynamic model of the system during contact with its environment and will allow research in contact navigation to be explored. This type of research is intended for developing algorithms for exploring dynamic environments. Unlike traditional robots that focus on collision avoidance, this platform is designed to seek out contact and use it to gather important information about its surroundings. This small desktop platform was designed to have similar proportions and properties to a small human arm. These properties include compliant joints and tactile sensitivity along the lengths of the arms. The primary applications for the completed platform will be research in contact navigation and manipulation in dynamic environments. However, there are countless potential applications for a compliant arm with increased tactile feedback, including prosthetics and domestic robotics. This thesis covers the details behind the design, analysis, and evaluation of the two degrees of the Wrist and two two-link fingers, with particular attention being given to the integration of series elastics actuators, the decoupling of the fingers from the wrist, and the incorporation of tactile sensors in both the forearm motor module and fingers.

Abstract:
This research programme investigates aspects of end effector design and control, to carry out grasping operations in a range of unstructured environments. A conceptual three fingered end effector design has been developed. The articulated finger is operated by a novel mechanism which provides all the finger motions. Detailed force and kinematic analyses have been carried out which establish mechanical integrity of the system and help size the various finger components. A vectorial method of link representation has been used to derive finger kinematics. This representation has been used for position control in the controller. A numerical technique based on the Newton- Raphson method has been derived to undertake the finger's inverse kinematics in realtime. To validate the theoretical operation of the finger drive, a mechanism has been built with the necessary electronic interface, and programmed for position control. A photoelasticity based sensor has been developed which is capable of detecting applied force as well as slip and is largely immune to external disturbances. The sensor has a small size allowing it to be easily incorporated into a robotic finger. Mechanics of slip has been investigated to develop a theoretical model of the slip sensor. This allows modelling of various material and geometrical parameters involved in its design. In order to control the end effector, grasping strategies have been planned and a controller structure defined. The top level of the controller uses the kinematic relation to move the finger to a goal position. When fingers make contact with an object, the controller switches over to an inner fiizzy logic algorithm. The rule base of the fiizzy logic ensures that a stable grasp has been acquired with minimum fingertip force. The implementation of the fuzzy logic has been validated on an experimental test-rig. It has been found that the controller applies different minimum fingertip force to objects of different mass and it responds very quickly to the external disturbances by applying extra force to the object. The fingertip force comes back to its previous level as soon as the disturbance vanishes. The important feature exhibited by the controller is that it forms optimal grasp of objects without knowing their mass and frictional properties. This offers a very useful capability to an end effector controller operating in unstructured environments. A complete model of the end effector has been developed which ensures equilibrium and stability of the grasped object taking dynamic conditions of grasp into account. The model estimates unbalances in position, force and moment of the grasped object and tries to minimise these unbalances. The simulated results have shown that for every grasp situation, the algorithm is capable of minimising the unbalances and the operation of the algorithm is fast enough for real-time applications.

Abstract:
The inverted T-beam bridge system provides an accelerated bridge construction alternative for short-to-medium-span bridges. The system consists of adjacent precast inverted T-beams finished with a cast-in-place concrete topping. The system offers enhanced performance against reflective cracking, and reduces the likelihood of cracking due to time dependent effects. The effects of transverse bending due to concentrated wheel loads are investigated with respect to reflective cracking. Transverse bending moment are quantified and compared to transverse moment capacities provided by a combination of various cross-sectional shapes and transverse connections. A design methodology for transverse bending is suggested. Tensile stresses created due to time dependent and temperature effects are quantified at the cross-sectional and structure level and strategies for how to alleviate these tensile stresses are proposed. Because differential shrinkage is believed to be one of the causes of deck cracking in composite bridges, a study on shrinkage and creep properties of seven deck mixes is presented with the goal of identifying a mix whose long terms properties reduce the likelihood of deck cracking. The effects of differential shrinkage at a cross-sectional level are numerically demonstrated for a variety of composite bridge systems and the resistance of the inverted T-beam system against time dependent effects is highlighted. End stresses in the end zones of such a uniquely shaped precast element are investigated analytically in the vertical and horizontal planes. Existing design methods are evaluated and strut-and-tie models, calibrated to match the results of 3-D finite element analyses, are proposed as alternatives to existing methods to aid designers in sizing reinforcing in the end zones. Composite action between the precast beam and the cast-in-place topping is examined via a full scale test and the necessity of extended stirrups is explored. It is concluded that because of the large contact surface between the precast and cast-in-place elements, cohesion alone appears to provide the necessary horizontal shear strength to ensure full composite action. Live load distribution factors are quantified analytically and by performing four live loads tests. It is concluded that AASHTO's method for cast-in-place slab span bridges can be conservatively used in design.<br>Ph. D.

Recruiters, under pressure to meet end-of-month goals, often work feverishly to meet their monthly recruiting goals. This thesis uses regression models to examine the effects of day of month of enlistment on Marine Corps Recruit Depot attrition percentages to examine the hypothesis that recruiters lower their standards at the end of the month in a final effort to make their monthly recruiting mission. The Total Force Data Warehouse provided data for over 50,000 recruits who enlisted and shipped to recruit training between October 2003 and May 2005. Of those, over 5,500 (10.62 percent) failed to complete the prescribed training. In the logit regression models, discharge was modeled against demographic variables such as age, gender, race, education level, and AFQT score, as well as variables representing the day of the month a recruit enlists (last day, last week, or last 10 days of the month). Prior research has found that DEP attrition is higher for recruits who enter the Marine Corps at the end of the month. By contrast, the data analyzed in this study show that once a Marine Corps enlistee ships to a recruit training depot, there is no statistical evidence of higher attrition rates in basic training based on the day the recruit enlisted.
