Moeller, Gerard, and Mishka Terplan, eds. Substance Use Disorders. Oxford University Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780190920197.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Over the past few years there has been an increased interest in the identification and treatment of substance use disorders, due at least in part to the widespread drug overdose epidemic. Clinicians and the lay public have gained a greater understanding of the need for treatment of substance use disorders and the consequences of avoiding treatment. In addition, there has been a growing understanding of substance use disorders as medical or mental health disorders, rather than as character flaws or merely illegal activities. This book builds on this nascent understanding and presents epidemiology, basic science, and treatment from the perspective of a clinician who wants to gain the knowledge and background needed to work with this patient population. The overall theme of the book is to discuss evidence-based rather than anecdotal or unproved treatments. Section I begins with the epidemiology, etiology, and neurobiology of substance use disorders, including preclinical data. Section II discusses pharmacotherapy for substance use disorders, focusing on medications approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Section III focuses on other evidence-based treatments for substance use disorders, including behavioral therapies, and ends with potential future treatments.

Wich, Serge A., and Lian Pin Koh. Deciding to use a drone. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198787617.003.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
In this chapter a brief introduction is given on three main aspects that drones are used for: detecting animals; land-cover mapping; and anti-poaching. Then the chapter focuses on which considerations are important to take into account when deciding to start applying drones for conservation. The chapter starts by providing an overview of alternative aerial data collection technologies. Deciding which technology to use for data gathering is not always straightforward and will likely depend on multiple factors. An overview is given of some aspects that are important to consider when starting the process of thinking about data collection. Then a discussion follows about which equipment and infrastructural needs are important to consider when using drones and the chapter ends by discussing some general considerations related to the usage of drones for conservation.

Markovits, Julia. Humanity as an End in Itself. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198797074.003.0002.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter develops an internalist defense of the claim that we all have most reason to be moral, drawing on Kant’s argument for his “formula of humanity,” which states: “so act that you use humanity, whether in your own person or in the person of any other, always at the same time as an end and never merely as a means.” It argues that rational pressure to form maximally coherent, systematically justifiable sets of ends gives us all reason to respect others as ends in themselves—reason that cannot be outweighed by our reasons to promote our own optional ends. It defends the Kantian argument against some prominent objections.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter urges us to abandon the belief that there is a single human rights practice. Belief in what is called the Single Practice Assumption gives rise to the misguided idea—common to both Orthodox and Political views of human rights—that a philosophical theory should aim to reconstruct the moral core to this practice, derive a ‘master list’ of human rights from that core, and then use that list as a critical standard to reform and improve the practice. It is argued instead that we need a concept of human rights broad enough to capture the diversity of ways in which the term ‘human rights’ is used across the world today. The chapter defends what it calls the Broad View—which subsumes Political and Orthodox views as special cases, deployed for different ends in different contexts—and ends by delineating a systematic methodology for deriving particular conceptions of human rights for the very different contexts in which human rights are invoked.
