_________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT
This study was divided into three stages, aiming the use of a methodology more focused and organized, in order to obtain expressive results concerning equines submitted to endurance training. In the first stage we established the electrocardiographic parameters of 20 Purebred Arabian horses at rest and after prolonged endurance exercise. During rest, we verified that the average heart rate was 35.85 bpm with predominance of sinus rhythm, and 53.78 bpm with sinus tachycardia after exercise. As physiological variation, a wandering pacemaker was observed, while as a non physiological variation, a premature ventricular complex. In the post-exercise, there was an increase in the amplitude of waves P, R, S and T, with P-wave tending to become unique in 35% of the animals and bifid positive in 65%, meantime the T-wave was monophasic and positive in all animals. A reduction in the duration, intervals and segments of the waves was recorded, and lengthening of QTc, however the QRS complex has hardly changed. The electrical axis in frontal plane presented deviations to the right and left at rest, suggesting increased chamber, and hypertrophy secondary to training, whereas after the exercise, presented extreme deviation to the right, indicating electrolyte abnormalities. The average heart score was 128.45ms, characterizing animals as athletes, reducing to 118.60ms after exercise. In the second stage, 14 Purebred Arabian horses were examined through electrocardiographic examination. They were disqualified due to exhaustion in endurance races between 60 and 160 km, immediately after disqualification, before any kind of treatment. There was prevalence of sinus tachycardia, followed by sinus arrhythmia and atrial premature complex, with the heart rate ranging from 48 to 78 bpm, and 93 to 111 bpm, respectively. We also registered an increase in the amplitude of waves P, R, S and T, and decrease in their durations, as well as reduction in the intervals and segments, nevertheless, the QRS complex has hardly changed. The lengthening observed of QTc pointed a moderate myocardial fatigue in response to exercise, and the elevation of ST was indicative of hypovolemia. The electrical axis in frontal plane presented deviation to the right, chamber increase and hypertrophy secondary to training. Finally, in the third stage, we assessed the behavior of osmolarity, anion gap, pH, and measurable plasma ions of 14 Purebred Arabian horses, 09 males and 05 females, finalists in an endurance race of 90 km. To this end, venous blood samples were taken at two times, at rest and after prolonged exercise, in order to measure the interest variables. Considering those findings, one can see from the rest, an increase with significant difference in the values of Hct, PPT and AG, suggesting a loss of fluid and a slight degree of dehydration. The pH and the H+ ion almost had no changes, indicating absence of metabolic disorders. Reductions, with significant difference, were verified for the ions Cl-, HCO3-, K+, Ca++, as well as BE. The examined parameters remained within the reference values described in the literature, only with slight increase of Hct and AG above these values, but without clinical manifestations.

The present study aimed to check the hematologic, metabolic and electrolytic alterations induced by exercise in Arabian horses submitted to field training during 90 days, when three Exercises Test (ETs) were performed on a treadmill: before the training, 45 and 90 days after it (TE0,TE45 and TE90 days, respectively). At the end of the training, period it was performed a 60-km endurance test to check the variables. Jugular venous blood samples were collected from 12 horses during the test in the following moments and speed: M0 – (basal); M1 – (3.5 m/s); M2 – (6.0 m/s); M3: TE0 – (7.5 m/s); TE45 – (8.0 m/s) and TE90 – (8.5 m/s) and M4 – (1.7 m/s) and after the recovery period (1 and 6 hours). After the 90 days of training, jugular venous blood samples were collected from eight horses during the endurance test at the following moments: before the beginning of the test (M0), during the test (M1, M2, M3) and 15, 60 and 360 minutes after the end of the task it was possible to observe, in the counting of erythrocytes, hematocrit and in the hemoglobin, leukocytes and neutrophils concentration, a light increase in the total plasmatic protein concentration during the ETs and endurance test. The glucose concentration, increased gradually during the ETs and presented a numeric decrease after the first ring in the endurance. The hormonal alterations revealed an important increase in of the plasmatic cortisol concentration during the effort, and an insulin decrease in the TE and endurance. The electrolytes K+ and Ca2+ presented changes along the TE, as well as K+, Ca2+ and Cl- during the endurance ride. We concluded that, after 90 days of field training with speed at 60% of the V4, there were hematological, metabolic and electrolytic adaptations which were necessary for the 60-km endurance test.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate athletic performance of a group of endurance elite horses through body weight losses, hematimetric and biochemical determinations. Eighteen arabian horses (mares and geldings) were monitored before, during and after an oficial endurance ride of 160km (FEI/CBH/FHBr), with 17km.h-1 of average speed. Jugular blood samples were obtained in tubes with or without anticoagulant (EDTA) in five moments. The night before the ride, T0, after 66km (T1), at the end of the ride (T2) and 2 and 15 hours after the ride (T3 and T4, respectively). Horses were divided in two groups, finalists (n = 10) and eliminates (n = 5). Three horses were lame and so were taken off the study. Significative elevations of percentual body weight losses were noticed during and at the end of the ride (5±2,15%) with no returning to basal values until the end of the experiment. It happens for the finalist group as for eliminated group. Hematimetric determinations revelead significative elevations during the ride, returning to basal levels the day after ride. These data revealed important phisiologic alterations in horses submitted to endurance effort such as hemoconcentration and dehydration. An expressive increase of enzymatic activity of CK and LDH was well tolerated for all horses, without any muscular lesion in the finalist group. However, eliminated horses needed longer rest period to return its values to basal ones.

O GI60 apresentou maior sensibilidade muscular escapular, lombar e glútea. GI60 e GII60 desenvolveram alguma sensibilidade tanto no TFDS quanto no TFDP.
The objective of this work was to evaluate the athletic performance of 10 purebred Arabian horses with an average of 7 ± 2 years old. After adaptation to the exercise, groups underwent two months of isocaloric training, randomly distributed into two types of training, one group was trained with only walk exercises (GI) and other group was trained with exercises in all gaits (GII). Training programs were assessed by analysis of lactate concentration [LA] and cardiac monitoring during tests in the field and treadmill conditions. We used Student's t test and Tukey's test to analysis of the data. From the exercise tests on a treadmill and in the field was possible to calculate the V160, V180 and V200 and V2 and V4, with no significant difference between groups. The time of fatigue (TF) and maximal speeds increased for both groups. The recovery [LA] did not differ after training between GI and GII. The HR of recovery reduced after training, 1 min after the THRmáx (from 210±0 and 122±15 for GI and 199±1 to 125±14 for GII). The GI60 showed higher scapular, lumbar and gluteal muscle sensitivity. GI60 and GII60 developed some sensitivity in both the superficial digital flexor tendon and deep digital flexor tendon. It was concluded that the GI is more harmful to the muscular structures due to high training time per session and that training of GII requires more careful by tendinous structures. Although both protocols have made improvements in athletic performance represented by increasing the TF and better recovery of HR after HRTmáx

The aim of this study was to register the physiologic and metabolic alterations and investigate the exercise induced oxidative stress that Arabians horses undergo during long distance endurance exercises, under tropical climate. Five endurance rides were followed through 2004 state championship. Blood samples were collected from jugular vein 2 to 5 hours before the beginning of each ride and during rides, after the veterinary check-point. During the recovery period, venous samples were collected 24, 48 and 72 hours after the rides, at each horses stables. Hemoconcentration (elevated erythrocytes count, hemoglobin concentration and hematocrit), dehydration (elevated total plasmatic proteins concentration and weight losses) and, possibly, decreased renal perfusion (elevated seric urea and creatinin concentration) were revealed by horses in this study. All data returned to basal values during the recovery period except serum urea concentration. Hormonal changes were also monitored and data revealed an important elevation in plasma cortisol concentration during the ride, directly related to the duration of it. Insulin response was decreased by catecholamines suppressing action during exercise. The endurance effort, evaluated in this experiment, could induce muscular alterations by an increase in muscular enzyme activities during the rides, with different periods of return to basal values in the recovery period. An interesting result was the exercise-induced oxidative stress measured by cyclic voltammetry to determine the total antioxidant capacity of plasma during endurance exercise. The results of this study can contribute to a better understanding of what really occurs in the horses body to maintain homeostasis while submitted to long distance endurance efforts under tropical climate.

O GI60 apresentou maior sensibilidade muscular escapular, lombar e glútea. GI60 e GII60 desenvolveram alguma sensibilidade tanto no TFDS quanto no TFDP.
Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate the athletic performance of 10 purebred Arabian horses with an average of 7 ± 2 years old.

Abstract: The aim of this study was to register the physiologic and metabolic alterations and investigate the exercise induced oxidative stress that Arabians horses undergo during long distance endurance exercises, under tropical climate.

The objective of this study was to determine the bone response of equine that practising endurance through the assessment of bone thickness and density, looking to recognise the type of adaptation and the moment that they start, and how the age and exercise influences in those adaptation. In the first experiment, 14 Arabian horses were selected and divided equally in two groups, a control group (CG) formed by animals that had never practised physical activity nor been tamed and an exercise group (EG) formed by athlete animals. In the second experiment, twenty-four pure Arabian horses were evaluated. The animals were divided into five groups. The control group (CG) consisted of seven adult animals, age between 8 to 10 years, that had never been tamed nor had practised any type of physical activity during their lives. The group one (G1) consisted of three young unbroken horses, with age between 3 to 4 years. The others groups was exercise and was divided according to the age and type of work. The group two (G2) consisted of thee young tamed horses that had never did a race before, with age between 4 to 5 years. The third group (G3) was about horses that have participated from a short race (40 to 60 km) during 2016, with age between 6 to 7 years. The forth group (G4) consisted of horses that were undergoing a training programme and participating in endurance races of long distances (120 and 160 km) sponsored by the International Equestrian Federation (FEI) during 2016, with age between 6 to 7 years. Radiographs of the radius, third metacarpal bone, accessory carpal, and calcaneus bones were obtained using a digital radiography system and penetrometer. The radiographs were stored and later processed to determine cortical bone thickness using the ProgRes® Capture Pro 2.5 (Jenoptik, Germany), cortical bone density using Adobe Photoshop CS6 (version 6.0, Adobe Systems Inc., San Jose, CA, USA), and trabecular bone density using the Image-Pro Plus 4.1 (Media Cybernetics Inc. Silver Springs, MD). In general, the results showed that the changes observed between the groups resulted from the age and exercise training. There was an increase in the compact substance density and thickness, compared to the control group, for the evaluated bones. For short bones, the increase in the density of the trabecular bone substance was an observed difference. The training proved to be beneficial for important bone adaptations. The adaptation observed were considered an important factor increasing bone resistance to exercise. These structural changes are related to a morphofunctional response by the bone tissue as a whole.

Full textThe exercise endurance is characterized by a prolonged aerobic work, of varying intensity in which the horse is subjected to a permanent job which requires organ systems maintain homeostasis. The ability of muscles to generate energy quickly via production of lactate is essential for the performance of high intensity exercise. However, the production of lactate may also suppress many of the vital processes necessary to sustain muscle activity. The combination of lactate in muscle fatigue has led to the search for dietary supplements that reduce the accumulation of lactate. N, N-dimethylglycine (DMG), an intermediate in the metabolism of choline, is a supplement currently marketed, but there is no consistent data in the literature on its effectiveness for equine athletes. In order to evaluate the effect of DMG, we used 12 animals in training for endurance events, of which six received oral supplementation, we used a completely randomized design with repeated measures on time. Blood samples were collected in seven different times, every 15 days, these samples gave values of the enzymes creatine kinase and aspartate aminotransferase values as well as glucose and lactate, and easurements of heart rate and breathing. After 30 days the last sampling, there were blood samples at short intervals of time after exercise in order to perform a lactate curve, and also compare data analyzed in laboratory and analyzed via lactimeter. Of the data analyzed, there was interaction between time and increased the enzyme creatine kinase, which can be explained by increased demand constant muscle during exercise. The enzyme aspartate aminotransferase decreased over time in both groups, but varied within the normal range, which can characterize low permeability of the cell membrane, which is common in animals conditioned. The change in glucose was the same over time for both groups. The mean lactate did not differ in the supplemented group, but the variation in the unsupplemented group suggests that supplementation with DMG can influence the maintenance of muscle integrity. In comparison dosage forms of lactate, it can be concluded that the lactimeter is an effective tool for getting data into the field, because their means did not differ from average lactate obtained through laboratory analysis. Oral supplementation with dimethylglicine did not influence athletic performance of horses in training for endurance riding.

Full textThis thesis takes part of the FUI project PAREX-IT (PARement EXtérieur pour l'Isolation Thermique). Its main purpose is to develop an efficient insulating coating from the outside, for refurbishment. More particularly, this work investigates the mechanical bond behaviour between this solution and its structural substrate. This thermal insulation is 4 cm thick and pneumatically placed. Considering a coated wall, solicited by wind or seismic loads, this configuration implies a load transfer from the structure to the insulating coating, through the interface between those two materials. The interfacial strength is though considered here as the critical area for a good sustainability of this complex. Meanwhile an equivalent study has been made on a more classical coating, by comparison. Two different scales have been studied. First, a local scale study to determine a failure criterion of this interface, which have been solicited in different states of stresses provoking its failure. However, the important differences of mechanical properties between the tested coatings and the mechanical support can, according to bibliography, provoke stress concentration. A numerical analysis has been conducted to quantify their influence on the parameters of the experimental criterion, for the two tested coatings. At a wall scale, a masonry submitted to shear loads was studied. The objective was to compare the behaviour between a coated wall and an uncoated one, considered as reference. In a second time, a numerical study was performed to confirm the criteria obtained at the local scale. Image correlation has been used to compare the experimental and numerical behaviours to facilitate modelling validation

We evaluated 18 horses that were disqualified from endurance race championships exclusively due to metabolic changes. The athlete horses were examined immediately after they had completed the 30, 40, 60, 72, 90 or 140 km races, before there was any clinical and therapeutic intervention for animal recovery. In the first experiment, the horses completed the 30, 60 or 90km races and the following parameters were measured immediately after: hematocrit levels, total plasma proteins (TPP), anion gap, base excess/deficit, osmolarity, pH, and the concentrations of hydrogen ions, bicarbonate, sodium, potassium, calcium and chlorine. In the second experiment, the horses completed the 30, 40, 60, 72, 90 and 140 km races and were divided into two groups: group 1 (G1) composed of horses that were disqualified after racing 30, 40 and 60 km, and group 2 (G2) composed of horses that raced 72, 90 and 140 km. Similarly, the following parameters were measured: oxygen (pO2[v]) and carbon dioxide (pCO2[v]) partial pressures, saturation oxygen (SpO2[v]), bicarbonate ion concentration (CHCO3 -[v]), pH, hematocrit, and TPP. In the third experiment, 32 purebred Arabian horses were evaluated. These horses were divided into three groups (G1, G2 and G3). The G1 consisted of those disqualified after 30, 40 and 60km endurance races; G2 comprised those disqualified after 72, 90 and 140km endurance races; and G3 the finalists in 90km races. Venous blood samples were collected immediately at the end of the races or at the time of disqualification and the following parameters were measured: magnesium ion concentration and the enzymatic activity of CK, LDH and AST. Adaptive metabolic and respiratory responses that resulted from the dehydration induced by the activity were observed, such as a moderate degree of hypovolemia, with obvious changes in hematocrit and TPP, as well as reduced osmolarity accompanied by sodium depletion due to alteration of the thermoregulatory adaptation mechanism after performing exercise. However, the distance was not a determinant factor for the disqualification; individual conditioning was. It was also found that venous blood gas analysis was not a significant tool for monitoring the time the horses were disqualified during the endurance races. Regarding the third experiment, no statistically significant differences were observed between the groups. The AST and LDH enzyme values were statistically significant when comparing the groups G1 and G2. Also, a statistical difference was observed between G1 and G3. It was concluded that the disqualification of horses after endurance races should not be linked to the onset of muscle damage processes. Similarly, high levels of the evaluated components cannot be associated with the occurrence of this type of injury.

Abstract: The skeletal muscle fibers are versatile entities capable to change their phonotype according to energy demand. To evaluate the effects of exercise over equine skeletal muscle in this study, 36 Arabian horses divided in 2 groups trained and untrained for endurance were used. The samples was obtained from de deep region of the gluteus medius muscle and processed for histochemistry and immunohistochemistry using specific monoclonal antibodies to selected fast and slow isoforms myosin heavy chain (MyHC). The histochemical and immunohistochemical categorization of the muscle fiber types were compared fiber by fiber. It was analyzed the percentage of different fiber types where, in the untrained group, the percentage of the fiber type IIA was higher significantly than the percentage of fiber types I and IIX (P<0.05). Unlike, the group trained showed a higher proportion of fiber type I than the fiber type IIX (P<0.05). The cross section area and lesser fiber diameter were also analyzed, and showed that, CSA of fiber type IIX was higher significantly than fibers I and IIA (P<0.05) in both groups. In conclusion, endurance exercise in equines increase the population of slow-twitch fibers in detriment of fast-twitch fibers

Abstract: Methodologies that can evaluate the individual athletic characteristic and follow the training induced adaptations, are very important to athletic horses. It¿s difficult for horse¿s coach and riders to explain the physiological horse responses whithout any technical support. First, we standarized the human LMS protocol (Tegtbur, et al. 1993) for endurace horses. This protocol determine the maximal speed in minimal blood lactate concentration, known as anerobic/anaerobic treshould. We concluded that this methodology can be easily used under field conditions, and is a good parameter to evaluate the physical conditioning in horses. Afterwards, we followed the oxidative stress levels in nine endurace horses during a three days race of 210 Km. Two biomarkers of oxidative attack were chosen. One was used to determine the lipid oxidation (thiobarbituric reactive species ¿ TBARS) and one was used to protein oxidation (carbonylated protein). Two enzimes of antioxidant system also had their activities measured (Catalase and Glutathione reductase). The successful horses showed a positive response to the competition stimulus. An increase of antioxidant enzyme activities and a steady state of biomarker levels of oxidative attack increased. These data support a direct relationship between the oxidative stress and poor athletic performance

Full textWith the purpose of evaluating myocardial alterations caused by prolonged physical exercise and whether these alterations influence the endurance horses\' performance during the races, 30 horses were evaluated, divided into three groups of ten horses each, being G1 composed by animals that performed distances of more than 100 km, G2 by animals that performed distances of less than 100 km and G3 by animals disqualified by metabolic alterations. The horses were evaluated in three distinct moments, T0 (pre-exercise, at rest), T1 (between 30 and 60 minutes post-exercise) and T2 (between 90 and 120 minutes post-exercise). Physical and echocardiographic examinations and else blood sample collection for the determination of cardiac troponin I and other biochemical tests were done. There was no difference in cardiac troponin I values neither between the various groups, nor between the moments. There was a decrease in the post-exercise values of the diastolic left ventricle internal diameter and an increase in the post-exercise values of the interventricular septal thickness. There was no difference in the cardiac functional indexes and the cardiac output was maintainded by augmentation of the heart rate. These minor echocardiographic alterations were more evident in the animals that were disqualified by metabolic alterations, and they don\'t seem to be related to myocardial injury, but secondary to other organic conditions. Based on these results, prolonged physical exercise doesn\'t seem to cause severe cardiac injuries in endurance horses.

Full textThe objectives of this study were to assess whether a different distances endurance races cause stress in trained horses, assess the effects of different distances an endurance races on the lymphocytes and relationship with the immune competence of equine athletes and investigate dietary supplementation with glutamine as possible mitigating this depressive effect of stress on the immune system . 33 well trained endurance horses were used, 13 at 80 km, 14 and 120 km and 6 in 160 km in 4 endurance rides . Half of the horses in each category received oral supplementation with glutamine to 30 days before and 14 days after the race. Venous blood samples were collected before (M0), immediately after the last veterinary inspection (M1), 3 hours after (M2) and in their farms 3 (M3), 7 (M4) and 14 days (M5) after. There was an increase in cortisol levels, ammonia and neutrophils, increase in neutrophils / lymphocytes ratio and reduction in lymphocyte counts at M1 and M2 in all horses. There was a decrease in LT CD4/CD8 ratio in 120 (M2, M3 and M4) and 160 km (M3) without supplementation and either a decreased in IFN in all animals. Horses that had received glutamine supplementation showed a decreased in CD4/CD8 ratio in 80 (M2), 120 (M2 and M3) and 160 km (M3 and M4) and late increase of IFN (M4 and M5) in 80 and 120 km. INF production was increased later (7 and 14 days) in 80 and 120 km horses that received supplementation and decreased in all 160 km. The concentrations of IL-2 , IL-4 and IL-10 increased after the race on all horses , but the increase was greater or more prolonged in supplemented ones. Based on these results, it was not possible to observe stress in these animals, or immunosuppression either, although supplementation has exerted effects on lymphocytes.

Full textThe aim of this study was to measure the effects of parenteral supplementation with selenium and vitamin E in predetermined hematic and serics parameters commonly used in endurance horse daily clinic. Six Arab and Anglo-Arab horses in endurance training were used in a Cross Over experimental design of two periods of 84 days each, divided in Treatment and Control groups. No treatment effects was detected for weight, packed cell volume, red blood cell count, hemoglobin, leucocytes, heart rate, mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration, reduced glutathion, urea, creatinine and lactatodeshidrogenase, creatinikinase, gammaglutamiltransferase or glutathion peroxidase. The lactatedeshidrogenase and creatinikinase values were high than those used as reference in both groups. In 70\'th day was observed a statistical difference (p < 0,05) for mean corpuscular volume and mean corpuscular hemoglobin parameters, with the lowest value in the treatment group. The following conclusions were extracted from this trial: 1. A parenteral supplementation with selenium and vitamin E had no effect in the examined parameters in horses training and competing in races till 60 km. 2. Despite the inconsistence of mean corpuscular volume and mean corpuscular hemoglobin finds, this observation can indicate an exercise adaptation tendency of this hematimetric values in horses with better antioxidant defense.

Full text«The eye exists in its privative state. [...] but who is to draw up the scale of vision ?» By the question which initiates "Surrealism and painting", Breton revealed how complex is to provide a definition of a surrealist painter. The book's title itself is symptomatic : Breton did not write about the surrealist painting but about surrealism and painting. He associated different painters who shared a vision close to the surrealist poetic. He never specified how this vision is expressed on art. What is the element that makes a work of art a surrealist work of art ? Focusing on the concept of "absolute automatism", introduced in the 1939, these doctoral studies wish to clarify how the Breton's theory of automatism and the Matta's theory of "Morphological psychologies" are intertwined and led to the surrealist painting of : "lnners worlds" which resulted into the American abstract expressionism. Endre Rozsda is a part of the artistes who had choice this way. On "Surrealism and painting" his name is associate with painters like : Dominguez, Matta, Paalen. The Hungarian artist joined the movernent in the 1957. His work bridged the deep-rooted imaginary world of Hungary and the surrealism. Focusing on the historical context, this thesis wishes to highlight the importance of the Rozsda's art in the Hungarian as well as in the European culture. In addition it investigates on a relationship between Breton and the artists of the European School and it is analyzed, by inedited documentations, the lack of an official surrealist movement in Budapest. Moreover, this work aim to prove how the Rozsda's painting after the Second War World represent a rare example of surrealist automatist Hungarian art
