Abstract:

Abstract:
The role La2O3 on the radiation shielding properties of La2O3-CaO-B2O3-SiO2 glass systems was investigated. The energies were selected between 0.284 and 1.275 MeV and Phy-X software was used for the calculations. BLa10 glass had the least linear attenuation coefficient (LAC) at all the tested energies, while BLa30 had the greatest, which indicated that increasing the content of La2O3 in the BLa-X glasses enhances the shielding performance of these glasses. The mass attenuation coefficient (MAC) of BLa15 decreases from 0.150 cm2/g to 0.054 cm2/g at energies of 0.284 MeV and 1.275 MeV, respectively, while the MAC of BLa25 decreases from 0.164 cm2/g to 0.053 cm2/g for the same energies, respectively. At all energies, the effective atomic number (Zeff) values follow the trend BLa10 < BLa15 < BLa20 < BLa25 < BLa30. The half value thickness (HVL) of the BLa-X glass shields were also investigated. The minimum HVL values are found at 0.284 MeV. The HVL results demonstrated that BLa30 is the most space-efficient shield. The tenth value layer (TVL) results demonstrated that the glasses are more effective attenuators at lower energies, while decreasing in ability at greater energies. These mean free path results proved that increasing the density of the glasses, by increasing the amount of La2O3 content, lowers MFP, and increases attenuation, which means that BLa30, the glass with the greatest density, absorbs the most amount of radiation.

Abstract:
Quem cobra a falta é Exu, parceiro do escritor baiano Jorge Amado. Abstract:
The present study was designed to highlight aesthetic thought of Zola in relation to vital energy. Behind his scientism doctrine—to which Zola, a theoretician is too often reduced—the novelist, from his youth, constantly reflected on creative genius. In order examine this side of his writing, we focused on his writings on art. In the 1860s, his formative years, realism declined and a post-realistic current emerged which seemed destined to surpass it. Realism, which was considered a form of materialism presenting “matter” without synthesizing it with the “mind”, was criticized for its supposed lack of creativity. In response, in his writings on Courbet and Manet, Zola proposed the idea of the work as produced not by the “mind”, but by “life”, arguing that the expression of the artist’s life animates all objects around him or her. While he adhered to realism’s endeavour that, by rejecting metaphysics and imagination, he lead art to matter, his theory of the productive notion of “life” went beyond realism, espousing the creativity of “matter”. This attempt echoed the history of aesthetics, which moved with Taine and Guyau—among others—towards the theorization of life as beauty in the positivist era. Through the prism of his belief in vitalism, as understood through the critical and philosophical discourse on art in his time, we offer a new way of reading Zola’s work which reveals his constant efforts to build a creative principle specific to the naturalist regime from his first novels to The Four Gospels

Oakley, Catherine. "Vital forms : bodily energy in medicine and culture, 1870-1925." Thesis, University of York, 2016. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/16647/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores a conceptual understanding of the body as an economy of “energy”. It examines the range of real and imaginary practices that this understanding inspired, and the ways in which bodily energy was defined, discussed and culturally represented in Britain and the US across the period 1870-1925. Drawing selectively on a wide range of primary sources – scientific writing, popular science periodicals, newspaper commentaries, literary fiction and silent film – it identifies pervasive preoccupations with corporeal functionality and vitality, and considers these in relation to key social, cultural and economic changes. Employing a cultural materialist approach, and including marginal texts and little-studied archival materials in its enquiry, this study integrates cultural and scientific forms to illuminate the ways in which literary and filmic texts intersected with medical and commercial designs for the ideal body of late nineteenth- and early twentieth- century capitalism: energized, productive, appetitive and youthful. Prevailing critical approaches both in the history of medicine and in literary studies of this period have predominantly been defined by an interest in narratives of “degeneration”. This thesis identifies discourses surrounding the regulation, restoration and rejuvenation of bodily energy as projects of corporeal “regeneration”, and scrutinizes the ideological and creative characteristics of the materials in which they were expressed. Part I considers discussions and representations of fatigue, neurasthenia and idleness as categories of “arrested” energy, alongside interventionist strategies such as electrotherapy and Taylorism, which sought to liberate the body’s productive potential. Part II examines the discursive formation of old age as a state of “expended” energy, together with corresponding interests in the medical and cultural possibilities of “rejuvenation”: the restoration of the body’s youthful vigour. This interdisciplinary approach, combining elements from the History of Medicine, Labour History, Cultural Studies, Literary Studies, and Film Studies, facilitates distinct contributions to each of these areas. In addition, synthesizing materials from each field sheds new light on an expansive network of interlinked and mutually-illuminating discourses relating to bodily energy, the full extent of which has, until now, been largely obscured by a more conventional scholarly adherence to disciplinary boundaries.

Abstract:

No. of bitstreams: 1 Moretti_AndrezzaCampos_M.pdf: 4739501 bytes, checksum: 522c3c978ea2952d3bcfd3eaf019c5ce (MD5) Previous issue date: 2003
Abstract: This dissertation intends to discuss the relationship between the conscious utilization of Chinese Energy Conception ("Qi") and the creative processes development that could be able to dialogue with the present society; thus contributing to the technical and creative formation of actors-dancers, through the verification of the influence of energetic perception on the poetic corporal compositions. On the assumption that energy is an essential element to the development of the perception; as we can at the same time feel the energy moving our body or it could be directed for a specific finality, we ask: Could the study of energetic perception as a guide to the construction of the poetic-corporal composition contribute to the technical and creative development of the artist-researcher, actor dancer? and at the same time unveil a poetic that could be converted in behalf of a better quality of the tenuous movement and artistic "saying. This is an experimental and qualitative research, with concomitant conception and realization. Therefore we approach its contents in two procedures: a) observational - descriptive and b) experimental - ana1ytic, searching a discourse composition about the relationship of energy and expressiveness. Upon analyzing the practical works (composed by several exercises that develop the energy perception concomitant with works of improvisation and choreography composition) and our experiences as a performer, we could verify that the energetic perception perform on scenic presence, on the quality and refinement of the movements, on explicitness of intention and in respect to the integrity of the dancer what consequently will reflect more elaborated and consistent works
Mestrado
Artes
Mestre em Artes

Abstract:

Grieder, Eveline. "Le yoga, un espace pour le sacré." Thesis, Montpellier 3, 2015. http://www.theses.fr/2015MON30009/document.

Abstract:
Yoga, a space for sacredThe problematics of this work in based on some epistemological considerations that took me more than 35 years : an academic training in history and anthropology, a 3 years ground in India among hindu monastic population, 30 years teaching yoga, and a further orientation in anthropology of imagination, brought me into trying to spot existential basement of spiritual life, that I consider as linked with fundamental categories of human relation to the world. The concepts and symbols of cosmic energy, soul, micro-macrocosmos equation, earth and sky couple, and also other pairs of opposites, are at the root of the very ancient philosophy of yoga : their experience allow the feeling of a widening of consciousness, and of real-life space. They are also extremely frequent in all human history, to the point that it can be thought that we are faced to basic intuitions of the human position in time and space, that have structured the sense of existence during milleniums, giving the keys to understand the myriad of initiations that can be found everywhere in traditionnal cultures.I started from a field survey, then I continued by a comparative study, and finished with an investigation in socio-anthropology on the image of yoga and on the mind-set of its practitioners. Now, I propose to highlight the impact of this body-and-mind discipline on the search of meaning (that I relate to the notion of sacred), and on the need of re-enchantment in the contemporary world
