Full textBy integrating at least one additional energy converter into the drive train, parallel hybrid vehicles gain an additional degree of freedom compared to conventional vehicles. In addition to the design and efficiency of the individual drive train components, especially the use of this additional degree of freedom is the key responsible to achieve the desired goals in the operation of a hybrid vehicle, such as minimizing fuel consumption and exhaust emissions. Responsible for this are so-called supervisory strategies. In a first step, the present thesis provides an overview of current supervisory control strategies for vehicles with a parallel hybrid architecture and compares selected approaches. In a second step, a promising Equivalent Consumption Minimization Strategy (ECMS) is chosen and implemented in a MATLAB/Simulink-longitudinal dynamics model. This approach relates on the determination of the equivalence factor which is carried out without the use of prediction data. A comparison of the fuel consumption, obtained for a rule-based supervisory strategy, shows the advantages of the implemented ECMS approach. To consider the different states of charge at the end of the trip, a charge-dependent fuel correction will be presented

Full textThe dissertation presents a new optimizing energy management concept for fuel cell-direct storage-hybrid systems. Initially, the characteristics of specific energy time series are investigated on the basis of real measurement data. A new concept for the multi-scale analysis, modelling and prediction of fluctuating photovoltaic supply and electric load demand profiles is developed. The second part of the dissertation starts with a discussion of the benefits of and the basic coupling and control principles for fuel cell-direct storage-hybrid systems. The typical characteristics of a PEM-fuel cell, a metal hydride hydrogen storage, a lithium-ion battery and a supercap unit are presented. A new modular DC/DC-converter is described. Results from experimental and theoretical investigations of the individual components and the overall hybrid system are discussed. New practicable models for the voltage-current-curve, the state of charge behaviour and the conversion losses are presented. The third part of the dissertation explains the new energy management concept. The optimization of power flows is achieved by a control-oriented approach, employing a) the primary control of bus voltage and fuel cell current, b) the secondary control to limit fuel cell current gradient and operating range and to perform direct storage charge control, and c) the system control to optimally adjust secondary control parameters aiming for a reduction of dynamic fuel cell stress and hydrogen consumption. Results from simulations and experimental investigations demonstrate the benefits and high capabilities of the new optimizing energy management concept. Examples of stationary and portable applications conclude the dissertation

Full textThis thesis includes two different options to manage the situation of consumption and supply in a low-voltage grid. On the one hand the energy management is based on the optimization of the losses in the low-voltage grid caused by the resistance of the branchs. On the other hand the resistance between consumption and supply is the optimized parameter. This is implemented with a clustering of the whole low-voltage grid in groups of households. Based on realistic models of low-voltage grids and different situations of consumption and supply the two management strategies are tested. These tests shows the influence on the losses, the integration of distributed suppliers and the controlled power flow to the medium-voltage grid

Full textLow fuel consumption is a major concern in civil aerospace due to environmental and economic objectives. Hence, conventional hydraulically or pneumatically driven aircraft systems have been replaced by electrically driven systems for decades. This trend is also known as More Electric Aircraft (MEA). In former studies, MEA architectures were more efficient, but much heavier than their conventional counterparts. The present work demonstrates the model-based development of intelligent energy management algorithms for aircraft energy systems based on economic models. This energy management facilitates a significant reduction of system mass, improves energy efficiency and can hence reduce fuel consumption of MEA considerably. In particular, the integrated development of an energy management along with the electrical system in the Modelica modelling language enables sizing of system components with realistic load profiles. Hence, this reduces the system mass. The optimization potential of the energy management is quantified and validated by means of an electrical reference system model. Applying the energy management, the mass of this system model can be reduced by 32 % and the energy efficiency can be improved slightly. Due to the multi-physical modelling of the energy management, it can also be applied to thermal management of aircraft systems. Thus, the energy efficiency of the cooling system can be improved significantly. As a result of the demonstrated benefits, an energy management should be considered for future development of aircraft energy systems. Especially for MEA, there is tremendous optimization potential for the energy management. Hence, the present work shall motivate aircraft industry to size aircraft systems with realistic load profiles and perform a model-based and integrated development of the energy management along with the electrical system in early phases of the system design process

Full textThe volatile energy supply by solar cells for wireless sensor nodes causes vast challenges for the energy management of such systems. Conditioned by seasonal and short time effects, the incoming power continuously varies. Simultaneously a reliable and constant function of the system has to be realized. To reconcile this, a model for the expected incoming solar power has been derived, which enables the estimation of the planned energy curve. This curve can be compared with the real progression of incoming power measured in parallel, to determine the current state of energy of a sensor node. This comparison is used to derive decision criteria for the control of the energy distribution or operating conditions. Within this work, the physical backgrounds for the modelling of the incoming solar energy and the state of the art of modelling solar power are described. A model is chosen as basis for further investigations and adapted to the limited hardware of wireless sensor nodes. The main challenges are the reduced processing power, few data memory in the system and the objective to consume as few energy as possible for the calculation. The results show that an adapted model can be implemented on wireless sensor systems and that it is executable despite the heavy limitations. This enables a distinct improvement of the distribution of energy across the day, which results in a constant systems function, despite the varying incoming power. At the same time the reliability and failure safety are being improved and the oversizing of the solar cell and the storage elements can be reduced. Therefore the model based energy management is an important component for a stable power supply of wireless sensor systems.
