In order for the DMFC to efficiently use all its fuel, with a minimum of balance of plant, a low-loss proton exchange membrane was required. Moderate conductivity and ultra low methanol permeability were needed. Fuel loss is the dominant loss mechanism for low power systems. By replacing the polymer membrane with an inorganic glass membrane, the methanol permeability was reduced, leading to low fuel loss. In order to achieve steady state performance, a comp

Thesis (MScEng)--Stellenbosch University, 2012<br>ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Through many years of research, a number of production schemes have been developed for converting lignocellulosic biomass into transport fuels. These technologies have been assessed through a number of techno-economic studies for application in a particular context in terms of the technical and economic feasibility. However, previous studies using these methods have tended to lack vigour in various aspects. Either the energy efficiency of the processes were not maximised through adequate heat integration, or a competing techno

The thesis topic is creating conditions for successful implementation of alternative fuel technologies in passenger cars on the Czech market. Its goal is to develop a comprehensive concept of proposed measures that would create demand for alternative powertrain. It analyzes current situation of the environmental-friendly vehicles market and examines reasons why consumers have not been purposefully searching for these cars so far. The thesis consists of several coherent blocks. The first one deals with general aspects of innovations and development, energy resources, climate protection and car

Through the historic usage of fossil fuel, climate impacts have been severe and threaten to disrupt global economies and biological diversity. Hydrogen has emerged as a technology which can enable the productionand storage of renewable energy with no carbon emissions. However, energy transitions are complex as the sector is characterized by lock-in and path dependency due to co-evolution with infrastructure, policy and geography. The purpose of this study is to explore how hydrogen energy can overcome the lock-in and path dependency of fossil fuels. To achieve this, a qualitative single-case s
