We review the recent programme undertaken to construct, systematically and algorithmically, large classes of heterotic vacua, as well as the search for the MSSM therein. Specifically, we outline the monad construction of vector bundles over complete intersection Calabi–Yau threefolds, their classification, stability, equivariant cohomology and subsequent relevance to string phenomenology. It is hoped that this top–down algorithmic approach will isolate special corners in the heterotic landscape.

In the last years, the standard model of cosmology has been corroborated by a wide number of astrophysical observations. Despite its undeniable success, nowadays there is little knowledge about the true nature of dark matter and dark energy. In this thesis we use a different approach to give an intriguing answer to these open problems, in the light of the corpuscular model of gravity. We give a general overview on the reasons behind the need for a corpuscular theory of the gravitational interaction. Then, we show that if the same picture is extended to cosmological spaces, dark energy naturall

Here we consider the possibility that massless gravitons suffering slow redshift may be responsible for the properties of spiral galaxies attributed to dark matter. Abstract The demand for large scale energy storage has been increasing for the integration of highly fluctuating energy production from renewables. Depleted gas fields are among the most suitable candidates for underground hydrogen storage, with well-known high-quality reservoir petrophysical characteristics, huge storage capacities and good sealing. However, biogeochemical interactions of hydrogen with rock-brine-resident gas could lead to hydrogen degradation as it is a favoured substrate for many anaerobic microorganisms. However, the inherent risks exist due to microbial activities, such as the potential loss of stored hydrogen (H2) and contamination by generated gases like methane (CH4) and hydrogen sulfide(H2S). To better understand the effects of subsurface microbial processes on UHS, it is essential to conduct numerical experiments to simulate the complex interplay between compositional two-phase fluid flow and bio-reactive transport. Abstract Underground Hydrogen Storage (UHS) is an emerging technology to store energy, produced by renewable sources, into subsurface porous formations. UHS efficiency in depleted gas reservoirs can be affected by H2 biochemical degradation due to interactions with rock, brine and gas. In the reservoir, subsurface microorganisms can metabolize H2 with possible hydrogen losses, H2S production, clogging and formation damage.
