Abstract:
Although a coupling between cerebral energy consumption and neuronal activity was initially suggested over a hundred years ago, the exact relationship remains unclear. This thesis addresses four aspects of the energy supply to the brain. First, blood flow is increased to areas where neurons are more active, and it is this blood flow increase which forms the basis of functional imaging techniques. In contrast to the common assumption that blood flow regulation occurs solely at the arteriole level, I have demonstrated experimentally that blood flow control, mediated by pericytes, also occurs in

The aim of this thesis work is to analyse the trends in heat use among Borlänge Energis district heating customer over the last 20 years. Several reports show that in general the buildings stock get more and more efficient, both in Sweden and other European countries, but will the same trend be seen among Borlänge Energis customer? Data of delivered heat to 324 customers, both single-family houses and multifamily houses, for the period of 1998-2018 is used in this study. The heating that is assumed for domestic hot water is calculated and the heat used for heating is temperature corrected so t

With climate change threatening life, countries worldwide have united to limit the damages generated by humanity to the world. For a sustainable future, it will be essential to utilise energy in more ecient ways. Energy harvesting in the form of renewable resources and innovative solutions for industries are some answers to an improved tomorrow. The net-zero greenhouse emission target by 2045 in Sweden puts pressure on the energy-demanding sectors to nd intelligent new ways to support their processes. Increasing concern about global climate change has led to a growing interest in energy usage and water consumption. It is well known that changes in consumption habits lead to more efficient use of energy and water sources. Nowadays, globalization, environmental concerns, and the shortage of resources have led to an increase of stakeholder pressure on companies to expand their focus to sustainability. Also, the high impact that the savings can have in the financial status of the company. It is encouraging the headboards to study and improve the ways water and energy are being used within the p

Over reliance on fossil fuels, rising global population, industrialization, demands for a higher standard of living and transportation have caused alarming damage to the environment. If current trend continues then catastrophic damage to the earth and its environment may not be reversible. There is an urgent need to reduce the use of fossils fuels and substituting it with renewable energy sources such as wind, tidal and hydroelectric. Solar source seems to be the most promising due to its environmental friendly nature, portability and reliability. This source was examined in terms of microbusi

This study aims to rationalize the consumption of thermal energy in residential buildings by recovering heat from wastewater inside the building before entering the central sewage network outside the building, by conducting an analytical study for a residential tower in Syria to find out the coverage percentage of the heat energy recovered from wastewater for the heating and domestic hot water loads needed for the tower, and calculating the percentage of reduction in carbon dioxide (CO2) gases. It is a simple technology as the thermal recovery system consists of three main components, which ar

The environmental impact from our energy production and use today is a central concern for every major decision maker regardless of interest area. Together with transport and industry, housing and services is a major contributor to our energy consumption. In 2013 housing and services accounted for 38% of the energy consumption in Sweden Therefore, energy consumption in buildings has become an area of great importance with many technological solutions developing to meet the demands from investors and legislation. However, present solutions primarily aim to solve current problems, while ongoing

We are coming to realize that there is an urgent need to reduce energy usage in buildings and it has to be done in a sustainable way. This thesis focuses on the performance of the building envelope; more precisely thermal performance of walls and super insulation material in the form of vacuum insulation. However, the building envelope is just one part of the whole building system, and super insulators have one major flaw: they are easily adversely affected by other problems in the built environment.  Vacuum Insulation Panels are one fresh addition to the arsenal of insulation materials availa
