Full textThis thesis studies the various personalization and socialisation processes involved in the adoptive filiation specific to adopted teenagers. Adolescence is a decisive period for the adopted youngster. He(she) makes choices concerning his(her) filial adherence. Ages of abandonment and of adoption must be considered in an indissociable manner. In addition, time elapsed between these two ages, which we call latency time, has a significant effect on perceptions and relations at the time of puberty. The identity construct of the adopted teenager goes through two interconnected processes. Attachment process consists in the implementation of behaviours relating (secure attachment, preoccupation, detachment). The coping process regroups strategies allowing situations considered as stressing to be coped with. An intergeneration transmission takes place in adoptive families both in terms of attachment relations and of ways of coping with the stress of the adoptive experience. This transmission takes place in a complex process of transactions. Research validation using a sample of 121 adopted teenagers aged 11 to 25. The tools used : a questionnaire, the CaMir of PIERREHUMBERT and al. (1996) and the Toulouse Coping Scale, ETC of Tap and al. (1997). The latency duration has a significant effect on the behaviour of adopted teenagers. A short family latency duration contributes to a secure attachment and active coping, whilst a long latency duration is linked with subsequent relational difficulties within the family, to insecure attachment and withdrawal coping behaviour. A late adoption does not portend specific problems when abandonment itself took place at a late stage. It appears that attachment and coping are not transmitted in the same way depending on the age of abandonment and the age of adoption

Full textThis study focuses on the concept of fosterage, referred to a number of traditional customs quite neglected by psychology and leading to long separations between a child and his/her biological parents. The present research aims, in particular, at giving a view of these customs in a Bambara context by using the constructionist paradigm of resilience. For this purpose, after deconstructing the representations and meanings underlying these phenomena as well as the dynamics of psychosocial risk and the vulnerability factors that they convey, we analyze the pathways to resilience of 15 children and young people fostered in a Malian rural community through the Draw-A-Family Test. The results show some analogies with a number of values fostered by the context of belonging but also the heterogeneity and creativity of individual pathways. The data collected confirm the importance of accounting for cultural elements in the evaluation of these practices in order to promote an integration of resilience models and a reconfiguration of the representations of parenthood and filiation within our societies

Full textThe subject of this thesis deals with abandon and adoption of children in brazil. The different reasons of abandoning that appear in the brazilian society, and a psychological analysis of the repercussions of this situation in the developpement of those children's personality, are described. A few months' research has been accomplished in a brazilian institution for abondoned children awaiting adoption. This wait is not without consequences for the abandoned. Some aspects of children's behaviour in a adoption process have been observed, especially a massive and permanent distress. Observations aiming children of the institution who were adopted, particularly in france, have also taken place, in order to study the behaviour of children who have left this institution. Last of all, an examination of the adequate solutions concerning the abandoned children's problems in brazil, and the exactly space that the adoption policy must take in this matter, are analysed

Full textExperience with migrant families and their adolescents in distress regarding their identity we receive in our setting: “La Clinique de la Multiplicité”, encourage us to open the issue of transplantation, of adoption and psychic inheritance. Adoption, thought as the culmination of a reciprocal process off recognition, led as to question the organization of the familiar/foreign relationship between the adolescent, the child and his parents.Questionning the psychic prehistory and the affiliations of both parents and adolescents / children, enables to reveal the source elements, the significant elements of identity as a result of , transmission, which inscribe the patient within links and affiliations. It allows, as well treatment of the remains; these remains that trouble the patient, pushing him towards dissociation and destructiveness. It also highlights what is lacking, what has hampered this process. This work of psychic archaeology can enable to constitute or to restore an inner membrane, an interface which absorbs, filters and transforms the elements issued from the exchange between the outside and inside ; between the child and his parents; a composition of information that fits together, that binds manufacturing the multiplicité, a functional multiplicité that enriches the identity. The metaphor of the transplantation, of the rejection of a foreign transplant will enable us to consider the concept of the psychic transplantation in order to redefine the process of adoption, of reciprocal recognition and inheritance; a process that exceeds the transmission process. Indeed, beyond being “son of”, the question of becoming heir is here relevant for these adolescents in suffering, a question that could facilitate the symbolic redefinition of their birth certificate

Full textThis research is focused on the mobilization effects of sociocultural frameworks which organize the family link in the scope of adoption abroad. Our sample was based on candidates for adoption, adoptive parents and children adopted abroad. We have worked on the hypothesis that these subjects who suffer from a disrupted link in their filiation (the adopting couple because of the lack of procreation capacity and the child because of the abandonment) could therefore also suffer from a disruption in the symbolical codes offered by the culture which they need to integrate this filiation link abroad. The method used is inspired by the clinical psychology and psychoanalytic frameworks, the tools used allowed to question the status of the family link in the psychic reality of the subject. The tools used are made of interviews and projective methods: the elaboration of free genogram for the adoptants and projective tools (Rorschach and TAT) for the children. The data collected revealed difficulties to establish a transitional space needed to elaborate the disrupted filiation. The depressive affects linked to such disruptive events are treated by means of primary defensive modalities. The family links therefore have a narcissistic dimension which expresses itself by hiding the difference (including the cultural difference) which organizes the link. This could be traced back to the failure of symbolic boundaries available to the subjects in the framework of adoptive practices to elaborate the wounds stemming from filiation and to be able to integrate the adoptive filiation link

Full textThe focus of this doctoral thesis is on Inuit customary adoption in Nunavik. The main objective is to study the association between customary adoption practices and child behavioral problems at school-age. In Nunavik, one-third of Inuit children are adopted according to customary adoption practices. The first article describe the cultural context and the main characteristics of Inuit customary adoption. Taking place at birth, customary adoption is considered as the donation of a child to a close kin, usually the parent’s sibling or the child’s grandparent. Contrary to closed adoptions which is in standard legal use in southern Canada and in the USA, customary adoption is not confidential and biological ties are not severed. The actual information on the development of Inuit adopted children come from a limited body of studies on Inuit children followed by youth protection services. Using data from a prospective longitudinal study conducted in Nunavik, this thesis included a sample of 46 adopted and 231 non-adopted children followed from birth to school age. Prenatal and familial informations were collected and behavioral problems were assessed using the Teacher Report Form of the Child Behavior Checklist. The second article compare adopted and non-adopted children on prenatal and familial characteristics and examine the actual extent of the increase in the number of behavior problems seen in Inuit children adopted in accordance with Inuit customs. Adoption per se is not associated with higher rate of behavioral problems at school age but adopted and non-adopted Inuit children were raised in significantly distinct family environments at school-age. Given such differences, the last article identified the prenatal and familial risk factors associated with attention problems and externalizing behaviors in a subsample of Inuit adopted children (n=46). Attention and externalizing behaviors were better explained by familial variables at school age than by prenatal variables. These results contrast significantly with previous domestic and international adoption studies conducted with non-indigenous children. Similarities and differences are discuss in this thesis and hypotheses to explain discrepancies are drawn. This study contribute to extend the scope of knowledge on Inuit customary adoption.

Full textThis thesis is one more effort to analyze the "return phenomenon" in the cohabitation stage, considering the reasons of the adopters for the return and its effects on children and adolescents. We understand that knowledge of risks and the evaluation of the different levels of the adoption process can provide interventions that reduce the failures in the construction of the new bonds. The objective is to analyze the phenomenon by the psychic view, taking into account the complexity of the adoptive filiation. We hypothetize that the adoption tends to fail in the following cases: there is no true desire on the part of the adopter to have a child (some demands may be characterized as perverse); the child does not correspond to the child imagined or fantasized by the parents (consider a certain tension between the desire of procreating and the one of adopting); there is a search for reparation by the adoption; the parental imagos inscribed in the child interfere in the process of filiation ; there is a failure on the part of the institutional teams in the evaluation of the applicants, in the follow up of the cohabitation stage and or in the preparation of the children. Based on the methodological proposition of metapsychology, we guided the research by the construction of 10 cases of children and adolescent based on the dossiers, on the juridical processes (dismissal, habilitation and adoption) and on the interviews with children's home teams. In that context, the interface of psychoanalysis with the law allowed for a better understanding and broad reflection on the subject. We have supported our study in Lacan's teaching : desire is essential in the construction of the link with the other. It should be pointed out that despite the many advances in the field of adoption, there is still much to be achieved, especially on the issue of transforming children and adolescents into subjects of rights, as a paradigm change
