Full textThis collaborative and qualitative study aims to better understand food supply and food access of low-income single mothers in an urban neighborhood of Quebec City. Eight (8) women have been met in one-on-one, semi-directed interviews, structured around a participative cartography exercise. The results have then been validated and deepened by holding a focus group meeting with 4 participants. The results show us that the participant's food supply follows a complex and ordered routine. The analysis of the factors influencing the participants food access, built around the multidimensional conceptual frame of Freedman and al. (2013), highlights many components that have had little attention until now: the absence of alimony for children, the difficulty to join the labor market, inadequacy of food assistance, traveling long distances and the lack of motorization, the resort to the social network, violence by a partner, transitions like perinatality or immigration.

Full textMany problematic situations can weaken the family functioning. The family situations involving a danger for the safety of the child or one of the parents are among the circumstances that increase the vulnerability of the family members. In these situations, the supervised child visitation services are an option which maintains parent-child contact when the absence of supervision could expose the child to problematic situations. Families can be referred to this type of service under an order from the Youth Division of the Court of Québec (children in care under the Youth Protection Act), an order from the Superior Court of Québec (disputes between separated parents) or under a voluntary agreement. Studies on the subject show that these services have positive effects, especially on the parent-child relationship. However, few studies have compared these two supervision contexts. This research, which is exploratory-descriptive and based on a secondary data analysis, tends to identify similarities and differences in the experience and family functioning of parents using supervised child visitation according to these contexts. Thirty-five interviews with parents involved in these services were analyzed using the McMaster family functioning model (2008). Parents from both supervision contexts emphases the ability of the services to foster the development of the parent-child relationship, in addition to supporting the development of positive parenting skills. Impacts related to the parent lack of attendance are also underlined (e.g. the child’s feeling of security decreases). As for the differences, parents referred by the Superior Court stand out because of their misunderstanding of the role of supervisors and the impact that this entails (e.g. feeling of discomfort in the child). In youth protection, parents experience less confusion about the role of supervisors.

Full textOne third of children under 18 years are not living with their two biological parents in Madagascar. Indeed, "family breakdowns" often lead to single parenthood (related to a divorce, parental separation or widowhood), to stepfamilies and to child fostering. This thesis addresses the family dynamics around these discontinuities, analyzing different patterns of care of children within the family. This perspective allows us to understand the processes that led to these failures but also to account for the complexity of decisions about support children according to the form of disruption experienced. Based on a previous analysis of Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS) data, semi-structured interviews were conducted in two regions of Madagascar (Antananarivo and Toliara) where the proportions of children not living with both parents are very different. An analysis of family histories highlights the various determinants of child care for each type of failure.and will show if there are standard models of care and socio-cultural specificities for the two regions. We also examine whether family solidarities remain in a context ofa growing economic crisis. In addition, we will highlight the role of grand-parenting in education and child fostering
