Full textOBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association between working hours and parental role, for preschooler’s families who participated in the NLSCY, 2004-2005. METHODS: A cross-sectional design was used. Parenting role was assessed using a validated scale. Multivariate regression models were computed, adjusting for potential confounding factors. Effect modifications of several factors were examined. RESULTS: Long working hours was not associated with lower score for parental role, compared to regular working schedule. However, part time work (<30/week) was associated with higher score (+0.8, p=0.03). A modifying effect of the parent’s gender was found. For women, long working hours were associated with a higher parental role score, but not for men (p interaction =0.07). CONCLUSION: The present study suggests that part-time work might have a beneficial effect on parental role. However, the study also suggests that women who work long working hours per week also have higher parental score.

Full textThe aim of this study is to analyse the relationship between school and family in a developing country such as Senegal. Does it follow a pattern of social reproduction or are there other patterns at work. We have explored three avenues. In the first place we have looked into the way parents perceive the school system today. How has school developed and to what extent can it contribute towards bringing students up into the mainstream ? Then we have examined the relationship between parents and teachers, with emphasis both on the parents and the teachers views. The part of the study also considers the actual practices and the nature of the relationships (collaboration, conflicts, indifference,. . . ) between the two sides. Thir dly, we describe the attention parents pay to their children's homework and we assess the impact of school on the house hold rhythm of life. .

Full textInternational adoption is a specific way to belong to a new filiation. Numerous studies have looked at various aspects of the internationally adopted children's outcome. Some studies have sought to show a correlation between the strength of their cultural identity and their psychological development. However the ethnic and cultural identity subject is missing in French research. Furthermore very few studies have examined the adopted children's cultural identity from the adoptive parents' perspective. The objective of this study is to use parents' discourse to explore their representations of their child's cultural belonging. The study includes 51 French parents who adopted one or more children internationally. Each parent participated in a semi-structured interview. The broad topics covered included the adoption procedure, the choice of country, the trip to the child's native country, the child's history before adoption, the current associations with the child's country of birth, the experiences of racism and discrimination. The sample includes 66 semi-structured interviews. The interviews were analyzed according to a qualitative phenomenological method, Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis. The data were published in two original publications and one article has been submitted for publication: The first paper is a review of the cultural identity concept in the population of internationally adopted children. The second paper aims at describing three different parental representations of the child's cultural belonging. The third paper concerns the first parent-child encounters and highlights the difficult, sometimes traumatic experiences made then. We discuss parental representations, and the importance of complexifying the birth culture concept. Is questioning the birth culture replacing questioning the birth parents or even the perceivable physical differences between parents and children? Exploring parental representations of the adopted child enables professionals involved in adoption to provide better support to these families and do preventive work at the level of family interactions

Full textThe aim of this thesis was to study the effects of social synchronisers on attention level, and its daily and weekly variations in 5- to 10-year old children at school. Following Bronfenbrenner'smodel, three. Attention and its variations were assessed using cancellation tests. Data relating to group leisure activities and parental work were collected from families using questionnaires. The effects of three types of school-day organisation were compared for 366 children. Frequency indices for participating in group leisure activities were obtained from 614 children. The study of the parental work effects involved measuring the length of the work-day of both parents (199 children), the constraints of work organisation, and the professional stress of the mother and father (460 children and their parents. ). The results confirm the role adjusting weekly school hours plays in a child's attention level and its variations, unrelated to gender. With regard to effects of group leisure activities on school attention , a critical threshold was identified in the youngest children, while beneficial effects were observed in older children. The length of parental time available to children resulting from parental work organisation, organisational constraints and professional stress influenced the child's attention at school. The effects of the mother's or father's work can be differentiated. The child's age would appear to be a moderating variable on all the relationships studied. The value of an ecosystem-based approach that models the environmental effects and their interactions on the child's psychological rhythms will also be discussed

Full textThe status of activity has it some effects on the cultural practices of the housewises and on the leisure activities of their children? Besides considering the status of activity as full variable, the transformations of the feminine inactivity, in particular the passage by the employment which characterizes her henceforth, are taken into account to try to answer this question. The status of activity has effects ont the cultural practices of the housewives, which remain, besides, strongly organized into a hierarchy by the level of diploma and the social environment. The leisure activities of the housewives are centred on the domestic universe and on the home, whom they are or not crossed by the labor market before, while of the working women turn more the cultural releases. If the effects of the status of activity are relatively limited on the nature of leisure activities of the children, which carry the mark of the social origin, they are more marked on the role held by the mother. Housewives who used to work distinguish themselves by being the most implied in the leisure activities of their children. They use in particular books for children as teaching aids and not to pass on the taste for the reading as make him the most awarded diploma. They so try to strengthen the educational activities, to the detriment of the domestic activities, in the model of the housewife. The passage by the employment of the housewives has a less effect on the role of the father, which is secondary and more particulary in the mono-active houseworks, and on the division of the parental roles which is less traditional in the bi-active houseworks

Full textThe Personal Project of Schooling (PPS) is an apparatus developed by the French government, designed to offer specific compensations and orientations to the targeted population: students assigned by the school as “in handicap conditions”. The Monitoring of Schooling Team (parents, referent teacher and professional and sanitary fellows in school) are responsible for the application of the project. This research mobilizes an ethnographic inquiry, combining interviews in parents’ house and observation at school. The school, claiming to take into consideration the general situation of students, continue to only refer to medical categories, when set up the academic arrangement. At the same time, the PPS introduce major changes in parenting work. Their participation becomes a real assigned labor, especially to mothers. In order to optimize the inclusion of their children, they invest into the proposed medical methods, to assume the connection among professionals and to adapt their household life and professional life. The school leave to mothers the work to resist to the medical categories, to negotiate with other actors and to mobilize their social resources. Moreover, it depends on their individual relationships to get access to the recognition of their legitimacy to participate in the process of schooling of their children
