Full textImmigrants' children show psychological difficulties when they start to learning to read. These difficulties are related to the notion of splitting in the ways of thinking. This splitting is revealed for example in the "figure de rey" testy and also in the "fables de duss" test. In order to resolve these difficulties, sessions, in mother tongue, with parents, children, psycho-pedagogical staff and "ethnoclinical mediator" have been experienced. This sitting anables to understand and to stop the school failure

Full textThis thesis focuses on the psychological examination of Moroccan school-age children, which consists of copying and reproducing from memory two complex geometric figures, namely Rey Complex Figure (1941), comprised mainly of straight lines, and Arabesque Complex Figure, modeled in this study and incorporated with a number of geometric shapes equal to straight lines. The efficiency level of the memory retention of topics is defined by the achievement of a high score on the graphical quality of the complex geometrical figure, the use of advanced implementation strategies, and its implementation in the shortest time with mental representation of this figure translated into a language production with a rich mental lexicon by numbers, by theme reflecting its cultural identity and the linguistic systems used. This study samply is composed of 360 children aged 6 to 13 years, who, in addition to having been subject to a sociodemographic and language skills questionnaire participated in a test of laterality and interindividual placing of the Rey Complex Figure (Rey, 1941) and the Arabesque Complex Figure in two orders reversed with two assessment methods classic and dynamic (Kirkwood et al., 2001) in an intra individual perspective. The results show that the efficiency of a Moroccan school-age child during a psychological examination develops according to his/her language skills, the development of his/her age, the advancement of his/her school grade and the belonging to his school to a urban environment. However, this efficiency is not gender related (girl / boy). Similarly, it is not related to his/her lateral profile (right / left), the directionality of the plot that dominates its graphic productions (up / down, right / left) and the order of execution (RCF / ACF, ACF / RCF). This same efficiency manifests itself more through dynamic assessment against the conventional assessment and slightly related to the award of the ACF

Mazella, Anaïs. "Développement d'une batterie de tests haptiques 2D pour enfants et adolescents voyants et déficients visuels." Thesis, Toulouse 3, 2015. http://www.theses.fr/2015TOU30262.
Full textThe main objective of our thesis work was to design a battery of haptic tests for visually impaired and sighted children and adolescents in order to assess the development of a range of haptic abilities with age, including scanning, discrimination, spatial comprehension, short-term memory and picture comprehension, and to assess differences linked to the visual status of children and adolescents. The theory behind the creation of our tests battery was that tactile picture comprehension skills develop concomittantly with the improvement of (1) scanning abilities (lines and dots), (2) haptic discrimination abilities (texture, shape and size), (3) spatial comprehension skills (orientation and location) and (4) short-term tactile memory capacity (dot span and shape span). The first chapter is a review of the literature on how the sense of active touch functions and on the psychometric tests that use this perceptual modality. The main purpose of our research is to question the relevance of using the haptic modality to assess the development of perceptual-motor and cognitive abilities amongst sighted and visually impaired children and adolescents. We finally emphasize that designing a developmental 2D haptic test battery would fill the lack of psychometric tools suitable for assessing visually impaired children. The second chapter is composed of three pilot studies in which sighted and visually impaired subjects were asked to identify complete and incomplete tactile pictures. The aim was to test the preconditions before creating our tool. More precisely, this entailed determining whether (1) tactile picture comprehension abilities develop with age, (2) these abilities can be compared between sighted and visually impaired children, (3) these two groups of children are able to understand incomplete tactile pictures. The results obtained suggest that raised-line pictures are a suitable material for assessing the 2D haptic abilities of sighted and visually impaired children. The third chapter highlights that a range of haptic abilities used to process 2D tactile stimuli (i.e., scanning, haptic discrimination, spatial comprehension, short-term memory and tactile picture comprehension abilities) improve with age for sighted subjects. In addition, we demonstrate that the ability to discriminate geometric shapes and the short-term memory of shapes play a significant role in tactile picture comprehension. The aim of the fourth chapter was to test all the psychometric properties of the battery with sighted and visually impaired individuals aged 5 to 25 years. We showed that our tool has satisfactory psychometric indices in terms of sensitivity, reliability and validity. What is more, we did not observe any significant differences that were inherent to visual status, or to the presence of associated disorders in the battery scores, suggesting that single calibration may be used. The fifth chapter summarizes the main results and conclusions of the research, its different contributions for both fundamental and applied purposes, and its limitations. Altogether our results suggest that the haptic modality is an interesting alternative to vision to assess the perceptual-motor and cogntive abilities of visually impaired people. Finally, two possible avenues for future research are presented

Full textChildren with cerebral palsy (CP) included in mainstream school experience more social competence difficulties than other children. Based on the socio-cognitive integration of abilities (SOCIAL) model (Beauchamp & Anderson, 2010), two issues are addressed in order to understand these difficulties. In a first article, attribution of intentions (AI) is measured with the Home Interview with Child (HIWC), a questionnaire presenting fictive ambiguous social situations. The results show that social status, more than birth status, is associated with the hostility of AI at 15 years old. Rejected and popular children tended to make more hostile AI than sociometric average children. It is proposed that social status score is an important mediator to consider for the development of a hostile AI bias in children with CP. In a second article, social dominance (i.e., a form of leadership) is evaluated in the context of a problem-solving. Behaviours related to social dominance (prosocial and coercive behaviours) were coded using a grid validated specifically for this study. Results showed that regardless of social status, children with CP did less prosocial and coercive behaviours than controls without CP. Furthermore, less prosocial and coercive behaviours were observed in their teams compare to teams composed of two controls. The lower social competence in children with CP could be partly explained by their reduced social dominance behaviour in activities requiring speed and fluidity as an expression of executive functions. Finally, the two articles presented in this thesis explore new avenues to understand and support the development of social competence in children and adolescents with CP. The interventions should take place early in the development of these children and should extend beyond motor skills. Interventions should target social skills before clear signals already compromise the overall social experience of children with CP into mainstream schooling.

This research reviews the main contributions made on the mother-baby bond topic in Europe and America. The cases of 25 adolescent mothers in Quilpue (Chile) are investigated. Five of these women are from the Mapuche Native community. Those women are monitored during their pregnancy and for the first months after the birth of their child, in order to determine the kind of bond created between them and the intergenerational transmission influencing this bond. For the first time in Chile, the CAMIR (adult-adult) and the RAF (adult-baby) tests are applied so as to contribute with new information on the subject

Psychopathy is an important clinical construct defined as a personality disorder characterized primarily by a lack of empathy and guilt, irresponsible and impulsive behaviors, and narcissism and oversized ego (Cleckley, 1941, 1988, Hare 1996, Hare et Neumann, 2008). The current state of knowledge makes it possible to affirm that these features appear early in a person’s development (DeLisi, 2016; Lynam, 1996). In parallel to this, a line of research has been focusing on the description and measurement of children's callous unemotional and behavioral problems (Frick & Hare, 2010). The Antisocial Process Screening Device (APSD) was created to evaluate these psychopathic tendencies in childhood. However, the validation of APSD with young children has hardly been done. Therefore, the general objective of this thesis is to validate the APSD with a sample of preschool children, in order to increase knowledge about the manifestation of psychopathic tendencies early in childhood. This validation will be done using exploratory factorial analyses on a sample of 335 children between 3 and 5 years old in order to identify the factorial structure of the tool in this age group. In addition, a comparison of constructs was made with the Conners Parent Rating Scale - Revised (Long) (CPRS-R (L)) subscales, measuring similar concepts to APSD dimensions. Once these analyses were performed, two factorial structures of the APSD were identified and the comparison with the CPRS-R (L) seems conclusive. The results suggest that the APSD tool would be valid in terms of research for measuring behavioral problems and callous unemotional in preschool children. If it is possible to identify precursors, these results could thus allow deepening the knowledge on the development and the etiology of adult psychopathy.

Full textThis study aims at creating a new tool for assessment of attachment based on a story completion task and photographs: the CHEAP (story completion for assessment of attachment with photos). This test is designed for people with intellectual disabilities, as it requires few abstraction abilities and little time. A simple and fast scoring procedure was made available with the help of an item response theory model (PCM; Wright & Masters, 1982). This instrument also showed goodpsychometric properties. As a second step, using the CHEAP led to the conclusion that teenagers living with Down dyndrome (N=26) and children from the control group (N=27) were more at risk of having insecure representations of attachment than control adolescents (N=64). This study also demonstrated that teenagers with Down Syndrome had more difficulties when they were taking intellectual ability and vocabulary tests and that the number of challenging behaviours reported by their parents was higher than in other groups (N=96 for mothers, N=61 fathers, for three groups altogether). On the other hand, their parents have as mamy positive feelings towards their children as parents of other groups, show the same level of stress as parents of control adolescents, and have the same patterns of attachment as parents from othergroups. Next, a covariance analysis was conducted: having an intellectual disability is one of the factors implicated in insecurity of attachment. Furthermore, the longer children were separated from their parents after birth, the more secure theyare later, which could be a proof of a certain resiliency. Finally, the Reaction to Diagnosis Interview (Marvin & Pianta, 1996) was proposed for the first time in the French language to parents of teenagers with Down Syndrome. This offered suggestions for possible improvements regarding announcement of the diagnosis

Full textThe present thesis focuses on children with early language delay (LD) at 18 months of age from a populationbased longitudinal study. It focuses on their co-occurring and school-age developmental difficulties according to LD persistence. First, a retrodictive approach was used to document motor development, sleep and psychosocial development in late-talkers to identify whether specific difficulties and/or their accumulation predict expressive LD persistence over and above initial language levels. Results showed that children with persistent LD accumulated developmental difficulties at 18 months of age whereas those with transient LD only had more oppositional behaviors than children with persistent LD and controls. These developmental difficulties seem to have a contribution to the development of expressive language but they do not predict LD persistence over and above the nature and the severity of early LD. The only unique predictor of persistence at 5 years of age was 18-month receptive vocabulary. Second, school-age language, academic and psychosocial outcomes of children with early LD were investigated according to LD persistence. We wanted to test empirically the hypothesis that children with transient LD had residual difficulties at school-age. Results showed that children with persistent LD accumulated language, academic and psychosocial difficulties up to Grade 6. Children with transient LD however had some psychosocial difficulties in the early school years. Thus, the hypothesis of an illusory recovery in children with transient LD was empirically supported only for psychosocial development. In sum, the results of this thesis showed that children with persistent LD have more co-occurring and schoolage developmental difficulties than those with typical language development. Difficulties were more severe or affected more developmental domains in children with persistent LD in comparison with children with transient LD. Moreover, early co-occurring developmental difficulties could help predict LD persistence at age 5. These results may suggest that children with persistent and transient LD belong to two distinct developmental trajectories underpinned by distinct developmental and etiological mechanisms. The implications of these results for the advancement of scientific knowledge and clinical practice are discussed in the conclusion.

Full textThis dissertation seeks to contribute to improving the practice of psychological assessment in a transcultural setting, in a context where psychologists see ever increasing numbers of patients of diverse cultural origins. We first frame our investigation by linking it to such broad issues as the universality of psychic structures, the definition of culture, the challenges related to calibrated tests and the research around adapting clinical tools and practices. We then discuss the complemetarist methodology as well as the psychic dimension of migration. The second part is made up of two studies. We first deal with the issue of cultural biases in nonverbal tests, with a comparative study of samples of the Rey and Osterrieth figures collected electronically. We compare productions by children in France (N=914), Burkina Faso (N=76) and Iran (N=45) but also by children of various cultural origins within the French sample. Results reveal an impact of culture on the perceptive structure, which also holds across migrants of various origins living in a same area. A second part presentsAvicenne’s ELAL, a language test specially created for children immersed in a bilingual environment by theCentre du Langaged’Avicenne (APHP), which is undergoing a validation process by our multidisciplinary team.We explain why this test is necessary in a transcultural setting before describing the steps leading to creating and validating it. After administering it 18 times including 4 times in Arabic, 8 in Tamil and 6 in Soninke, we offer initial field remarks. Finally, a general discussion draws lessons from those different pieces of research and suggests possible improvements for assessments, both on the adaptation of clinical practices and on necessary avenues for further research. This leads us to emphasize the need for multidisciplinary works bringing together research and clinic and for a nuanced and pragmatic approach of these matters

Full textThe institutional practice in day hospital for children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders is discussed here. The main objective focuses on a psychological intervention based on the rating with the VABS (Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scales) that takes into account the issues of both parents and caregivers to lead them to a better understanding of the impact of symptoms on the child and on the relationships. Double assessment of the scale on parents and on caregivers was conducted to collect their representations on the child disorder as well as their representations on his skills and his emerging potential. The function of the VABS on the mediation of the institutional follow-up of a six young people, including two girls and four boys, affected with autism spectrum disorders is illustrated. Results, which are based on the observation and analysis of sixteen protocols, point out the benefits of changing our clinical practice to a plural and integrative institutional approach, especially while tackling the assistance of parents confronted to autism spectrum disorders. Furthermore, outcomes on a group clinical experience, with seven participants composed of parents and foster families caring daily of children with ASDs, are also presented

Full textResearch has shown dysfunctions in visual orientation and audition regulation, attention engagement and control, social and non-social motivation at a very young age in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). This study investigated the relations of these factors to joint attention. 50 children with autism spectrum disorder, aged 21 to 50 months, were assessed using a clinical evaluation questionnaire on visual and audition regulation; a grid elaborated for the purpose of this research to quantify child’s social and non-social motivation; a time measurement of engagement and disengagement states. Joint attention scores were obtained with the Early Social Communication Scales (ESCS). Results show: 1. an effect of visual information processing on joint attention. 2. an impact of motivation, when associated to visual regulation, on joint attention. 3. a relation between attention disengagement and joint attention. Our statistical analyses suggest a role of social and non-social motivation in joint attention skills. To our knowledge, seldom clinical evaluations are targeted on motivation skills in relation to joint attention for young children with ASD. These results confirm empirical research, provide additional tools to clinicians for diagnostic, and suggest targets for early intervention

Full textThis research concerns the behavioral excitement of nine school children and uses the Scéno-Test projective mediation. In reference to the "Ego-skin" concept, the intersubjective clinical practice of thought containers in the institution a glance on the psychopathology in front of Act of February 2005 considering the restless child as an handicapped person. Inside these partially reducing containers are analyzed the emotional families axes encountered who, from a group of professionals in the work, can transform these containers. In reference to the psychic envelopes theory, this research proposes, as part of the psychological examination, a device consisting of the signing of 4 sessions of Scéno-Test for every child who takes into account a thought of "except" significant of his potential ejection of the school. From then on, the expression of the offside processes in Scéno-test stimulus by means of an allowed game helped the psyche of the child.Towards the concept of reversal, it’s the notion of thread projectif elaborated from a thought of the blank cover game and the notion of the negative used by the clinician researcher that allow to think of the elaboration of the answers. Within projectives envelopes, such as dream screen in the dialectic of waking and sleep, such as the negative hallucination in the dialectic of the absence and the presence, the child reconstructs a scene of traumatic origin. The overall results show that unstable child is in danger, even at school. Its ability to appear and represent capacity in Scéno-Test, despite the unthinkable fears and the family secrets and/or denials, allows him to reorganize within these projectives envelopes an internal space enough reassuring to be reinvested

Full textAims. - High intellectual potential (HIP) concerns both normal and pathological area, and is particulary associated with Asperger's syndrome in some individuals. Also, common features are observed in children with HIP as in those with Asperger's syndrome. Recognition and supporting of their particularities is a topical issue, but no current or past study have dealt with the relations between these two entities. With an exploratory approach, this research aims to better identify what makes similar and distinguishes children with HIP, from children with Asperger' syndrome associated with HIP.Method. - This study relates on the comparative clinical analysis of the psychological assessments of 11 boys with HIP and 6 boys with Asperger's syndrome and HIP. All of them are from 6 to 12 years old. The psychological assessment includes a semi-structured child-parent interview, two scales (an inventory for gifted children and the Australian scale for Asperger's syndrome), the UDN-II and projective tests (drawing of the family, Rorschach and TAT).Results. - In terms of experiences and representations of the protagonists towards HIP and Asperger's Syndrome, there is commonly a great ambivalence (between strengths and vulnerabilities). In terms of clinical pictures, the similarities are located in cognitive functioning, sensory, emotional and perceptive hyper-sensitivity as well as in vulnerability felt. Anxiety, motor conduct disorders, rituals and OCDs, and social difficulties are also common to both groups. ASD are also seen in typical HIP children. The contrasts between the two groups concerns the nature and the diversity of their disorders, as well as the nature and the intensity of their relational and social particularities. In terms of process, vulnerability felt is common to both groups, although the shell is most vulnerable in boys with Asperger's syndrome. For all, the relational area is a fragile, rational control prevails over opportunity of fantasize, and anxiety is an anxiety of loss.Discussion. - The results of this research allow us to affirm that HIP and Asperger's syndrome are part of a continuum. They seem to echo each other, such as hyperinvestment of thought and autistic defenses. For all, the intellectual hyperinvestment would have a protective function.Conclusion. - This work invites us to continue our clinical studies in order to better understand the challenges of these children and improve their care

Full textStarting school sometimes means the beginning of academic failure. Studies on child development highlight different factors in a complicated process. Motor, cognitive and emotional developments compete during the development of a child. There are many learning methods. Sometimes difficulties encountered perpetuate andbecome failure. The help offered is generally devised in relation with the problem. We suggest an alternative approach which takes into account the child as a whole. We assume that he has many resources. He can apply them based on his life experience. The Epreuve des Trois Arbres (ETA) and the Cahier de l’Arbre (CA) method operationalize this approach. We make the hypothesis that the child subject to this method will create a newrelationship with learning and progress. The study is based in part on the quantitative analysis of results achieved by twenty four children in CE2 (8-9 years) in a school test and at WISC IV before and after the use ofthe method. The results are compared with those of the control groups. Furthermore, the qualitative analysis is based on the protocols of the ETA and the CA of the thirty children monitored. It allows us to observe their thought process. This research shows that a global approach centred on the child in order to stimulate hisexpression with the tree analogical support allows him to progress and to modify his relationship to learning. The child is invited to transform his self representations and those of the world, to no longer be a failure but to be awalker towards a chosen future

Full textThis research is about the comprehension of the psychological functioning (emotional and cognitive) of the children who are carriers of a dyspraxia. The 1st part consists in defining the dyspraxia in the classifications and History. Then 15 children (1 girl and 14 boys) aged from 5 years 8 months to 10 years 11 months have been seen for an extensive psychological exam (Rorschach, TAT, UDN II, Family Drawing, Rey-Osterrieth complex figure, R-CMAS, MDI-C interpreted in a psychoanalytical dimension. Two hypothesis have been put to the test : the dyspraxia is incorporated within a “Limit Pathology of the Child” as defined by the CFTMEA and the dyspraxia leads to a disorder of the thought container linked to a disorder of the plain body feeling. The results allow to discriminate 3 groups of children thus objectifying the dyspraxia figures. Group 1, composed of 4 children, presents a pre-psychosis and a retardness in the cognition organization. Group 2, composed of 7 children, is typical of the dyspraxia ; The children present a “Limit pathology of the child” with an evolution disharmony and a cognitive disharmony. Finally, group 3 is composed of 4 children. They present a functioning close to group 2 but their psychological economy tends to neurosis. They present a cognition investment. The research ends with case studies
