Full textIntroduction: In recent years, periodontal disease has been related to a large number of systemic disorders. Objectives: The aim of this study was to find a relationship between periodontal disease and venous thromboembolic disease. Materials and method: A total of 197 patients were included in the study, 97 patients with a diagnosis of venous thromboembolic disease in the thromboemboly unit of the Virgen de la Arrixaca University Hospital and 100 healthy controls of the University Dental Clinic in Murcia, in order to establish an association between these two conditions. All patients were subjected to periodontal examination, with evaluation of the number of teeth, Bleeding Index, Gingival Index, Simplified Oral Hygiene Index, Community Periodontal Index of Treatment Needs, Clinical Attachment Level, Probing Pocket Depth, number of pockets >= 4 mm, and number of pockets >= 6 mm. Results: A high prevalence of periodontal disease was detected in patients with thromboembolic disease (P < 0.001). Bleeding Index, Gingival Index, Simplified Oral Hygiene Index, Clinical Attachment Level, and Probing Pocket Depth were higher in venous thromboembolic disease patients than in the control group (P < 0.001). Conclusion: A high prevalence of periodontal disease was detected in venous thromboembolic patients. There exists an association between periodontal disease and venous thromboembolic disease.

Full textThe objective of the present study was to determine the association between cephalic biotype and severity of periodontal disease, in canine patients of the Small Animal Clinic of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the National University of San Marcos, in the period September 2008 to March 2009. A total of 45 patients aged from one year old were classed through Cephalic index in brachycephalic dogs and not brachycephalic (mesaticephalic and dolicocephalic), finally were evaluated with Veterinary periodontal index. The result shows a frequency of 57.8% (26/45) of dog with periodontal disease and the brachycephalic dogs presented an 81.2%. It was found that severity of periodontal disease is associate with brachycephalic biotype. It was observed that missing teeth was higher in older dogs, the most affected teeth were premolars, and also it was found association between dental absence and brachycephalic biotype.

Full text--- Periodontal disease is a chronic infection caused primarily by Gram-negative anaerobic bacteria that grow inflammatory activity within the gingival sulcus forming subgingival plaque. Bacteria and their products stimulate host cells to release inflammatory mediators such as cytokines and prostaglandins that coordinate the mad and systemic inflammatory response that exacerbate the damage or destruction of periodontal tissues. The pro -inflammatory cytokines that originate at the site of local pathology will stimulate hepatocytes to produce acute phase proteins including fibrinogen who is part of the non-specific response. The relationship between bacteria and the mechanisms of the host immune response is the basis of immunopathological mechanism of tissue damage. Many studies have shown that fibrinogen is an important independent risk factor for coronary heart disease and is often used as a marker of inflammation. The increased plasma fibrinogen concentration is related to the development of coronary heart disease by changing the mechanism of platelet aggregation by increasing the amount of fibrin formed and accumulated, which is related to the evolution of the atherosclerotic plaque, and an increase blood viscosity related to the risk of thrombosis. The objective of this research was to test whether the presence of periodontal disease increases systemic fibrinogen level , which could add evidence for causal relationship between periodontal disease and cardiovascular disease . For this, 40 patients who met certain criteria to form 03 groups, one gingivitis control group ( n = 10), a group of patients with localized periodontal disease (n = 15 ) and a group of patients with generalized periodontal disease were selected (n = 15 ) . After evaluating the results obtained to those with localized or generalized periodontal disease have levels higher than periodontally healthy patients plasma fibrinogen, these differences are statistically significant (P < 0.05). Significant differences between the group mean gingivitis ( X = 276.80 ) and the group average periodontal disease localized ( X = 330.53 ) ( P = 0.012 ) was found and was also found that there is significant difference between the mean gingivitis group and periodontal disease generalized ( X = 336.07 ) ( P = 0.005 ) , but no significant differences between groups of localized and generalized periodontal disease . We conclude that the presence of periodontal disease causes elevation of plasma fibrinogen level, then we could reaffirm the premise that periodontal disease is an independent risk indicator for cardiovascular events. But still more research in this area is needed to confirm the interconnection between the two diseases.

Full textThe pregnant women are particularly prone to periodontal disease and in front of the evidences that point out to this last one as a possible factor of risk for premature births. This study was realized to determine the prevalence and severity of the periodontal disease prioritarily in post-partum women with premature childbirths and childbirths to term of the Hospital “Daniel A. Carrión”, Callao during the months of October and November 2003. The sample was constituted for 20 post-partum women with premature childbirths that fulfilled the selection approaches and 90 post-partum women with childbirths to term selected at random. Löe and Silness’s Index Gingival(IG) was used to determine gingivitis and the approaches of the Ramfjord’s Index of Periodontal Disease for periodontitis; while Greene and Vermillion’s Simplified Index of Oral Hygiene (IHO-S) was used for the grade of buccal hygiene. The results showed that 100% the post-partum women of both study groups presented some form of periodontal disease. However, the prevalence of more severe periodontal disease (periodontitis) was significantly bigger in the post-partum women with premature childbirths (25%) that in the group with childbirths to term(6.66%). Likewise, it was observed that the grade of moderate Gingivitis was the most predominant; 50% in the group with premature childbirths and 57.67% in the group with childbirths to term, differentiates that was not statistically significant. (P>0.05) The light Periodontitis was the most predominant in both groups:15% in the post-partum women with premature childbirths and 4.44% in the group with childbirths to term, being this difference statistically significant (P<0.05). In the case of the Grade of Buccal Hygiene the biggest frequency was in the Regular condition: 65% in the group of post-partum women with premature childbirths and 71.11% in the group with childbirths to term; differentiates that was not statistically significant. On the other hand was met a positive correlation among the IHO-S with the mean values of the gingival index, probing depth and level of clinical adherence between both study groups.
