Abstract:
This paper presents a detailed analysis of the behavior of the Icelandic conjunction enda. It turns out to be possible to explain all the puzzling facts about this conjunction by reinterpreting the traditional division between coordination and subordination by breaking it up into two binary features, [±CO] and [±SUB]. Furthermore, it is argued that this approach gives support for the analysis of Icelandic sentence structure proposed in Rögnvaldsson (1984) and elaborated in Thráinsson (1984, 1986).

Abstract We describe the language LLS-1 for logical specifying ontologies written in “Binary Model of Knowledge” (BMK). BMK is the system intended for specifying heavy-weight ontologies by means of conceptual-type languages. The language LLS-1 has a user-friendly syntax in style of the Manchester syntax for OWL. We also determine a deduction method for LLS-1.

Abstract:
In this paper, in a more pronounced way we are exploring with priority the formation process of terms from Albanian common words in technical terminologies (mechanical, electrical, construction). The influence of the scientific-technical language on the general one will be further strengthened in future, because science and its language are beginning to play an increasingly more important role on the development of culture in general. Under the influence of these factors, the terminology lexicon and the general lexicon are getting every step closer, where, an intellectualized lexicon is serving as the basic interlink which exists in both macro-layers. On the other hand, this problem could be linked in a particular way with the formation in the course of the times, of the technical terminology built on the basis of words of the native language, which are raised to the level of terms for the nomination of specialized concepts of this field. Thus, for example, a range of words can be brought forward, which we come across as early as in Buzuk’s creation "Meshari’’ (“Missal”) (1555), which today are used as terms also, not only directly in today’s technical fields, like: fuqi, forcë, bosht, rrotë, rrotullohet (rrotulluem), (Engl. power, strength, axle, wheel, spinning (spinned) etc. As is evident, on this basis primarily Albanian terminology formations are created, alongside formations originating from foreign languages, as well as those built on the basis of authentic Albanian and of word formative models and types (term formative) thereof: boshtor, i rrotullueshëm (Engl. axial, rotating) etc.

Abstract:
The article is devoted to the linguistic study of virtual language identity “moderator”, who is the key figure in Internet communication and is frequently found on Internet forums where moderation is the main factor that creates successful forum space. Moderator’s main functions are enforcement of forum rules and facilitation of discussion that helps to keep the forum alive. The image of virtual language identity “moderator”, that is rather positive than negative, became the object of complex linguistic analysis. Two types of moderators (authoritative moderator and ignorant moderator) were focused on and the complex pragmatic analysis of posts of these moderators is given. Verbal characteristics of moderators’ posts are examined and the connection between the quality of moderation and successful communication is established.

In Xhosa with a summary in English.
This research investigates the formation of mathematics concepts and use of existing ones (concepts) in isiXhosa in grade 7. The investigation intends to suggest the possibility of using isiXhosa as a language of learning and teaching mathematics in classes where isiXhosa is a dominant language. Through this investigation concepts that are likely to present teaching and learning difficulties have been identified. After identification of concepts, equivalents are provided, by working from the contextual meaning of the concept in English and then coining an equivalent in isiXhosa. For existing concepts whose equivalents are contained in dictionaries, whether used or not by mathematics teachers, a critical review of the meaning has been conducted to see whether that could be used in a mathematics context. Reasons have been that, most existing equivalents are a result of translation leaving the equivalent vulnerable to many different meanings in isiXhosa.

Abstract:
The term equivalence comes from the Latin word "aequivalentia" and means equivalence. "Aequus" stands for equal and "valere" for worth. So two objects are equivalent if they have the same value. Equivalence plays an important role in translation science. "Translation science deals with the process of translation, i.e. the process that leads from a written source language text (ST text) to a written target language text (TL text), the translation Therefore, a TL (target language) text must be equivalent to the original ST (source language) text. However, a perfect equivalent transmission of the message in the target language is not always so easy to achieve, because languages differ at different levels. The languages reflect your own culture, way of seeing, expression, grammar and syntax. When you try to adapt these elements to a new language, it often happens that the equivalence is not achieved due to this heterogeneity and diversity. If you don't achieve them, it is not a translation but a text reproduction or text production that is not the same is worth to the original text. That is why the search for real equivalence has occupied various translators and scientists for years. They have defined various equivalence criteria that can be helpful for an accurate translation. For all these reasons, it is essential to achieve the correct equivalence when translating. This thesis researches the concept of equivalence in order to better understand it and then use it in practice, namely when translating.

Abstract:
Irish theatre and its histories typically appear dominated by men and their actions. Drawing on the work of Marina Carr, Edna Walsh, Mark O'Rowe and Deirdre Kinahan, this thesis aims to complicate this masculinist narrative by comparing and contrasting a diverse range of female characters that have appeared in the work of these four important contemporary Irish playwright, since the 1990s. The playwrights and the plays chosen by no means comprise a comprehensive survey of contemporary Irish playwriting, but instead are intended to provide a more focused and illustrative study of male and femeale-authored representartions of women during the period. The study includes male and feamle playwrights and mainstage writers such as Carr, alongside Kinahan who, from a scholarly perspective, is lesser known. My account of Kinahan's work thus represents a new and original contribution to Irish theatre scholarship. In what follows I employ a critical methodology best described as hybrid, combining elements of culturals amterialist analysis, espcially the concept of hegemony as outlined by Antonio Gramsci, with a more performance-oriented mode of textual analysis. My theoretical underpinning draws on a range of existing arguments about the position of women in Irish culture, but also on the work of theatre scholars and cultural historians who have identified the stage as a significant site for cultural transformation. I argue that playwrights are leading the way in encourgaing soical, political and cultural progress for Irish women. I will begin by reviewing existing literature in the field and considering the influence and impact of an earlier generation of Irish playwrights and of the long sustained influence of the state and church on hegemonic depictions of female characters in Irish playwriting. However, my intention is to show that more recent stagings of Irish 'femininity' have been remarkably wide-ranging and anything but hegemonic.

native cultures into their classes and their attitudes about practicing culturally responsive teaching in multi-cultural classrooms. During the process of data collection, various methods were utilized: Five teachers working in the Department of Modern Languages were interviewed to learn their ideas about the topic from different aspects of language instruction, and two teachers were observed while teaching to better understand the classroom application of their ideas and the principles of culturally responsive teaching. Further post-observation interviews and stimulated recalls were also carried out to make an in-depth analysis. The results of the study show that although the teachers believe in the importance of making use of the students&

native cultures in their classrooms through different means, they usually neglect to do so. The study also shows that what the teachers associate with the term &ldquo
culture&rdquo
in the context of language teaching is the target culture rather than the native cultures. It is also found that while the individual cultures of the foreign students are made use of to a greater degree (but still in a very limited fashion), the native cultures of the Turkish students are ignored during the instruction.

Abstract:

Abstract: The objective of this work was to make a study on the projection os English, as universal language, over Portuguese, opening a research centered in the loan of words from English to Portuguese. These words are indicative of the vocabulary of the language of specialty, divulged in Internet programs. We have made a reflection upon the phenomenon of the virtual language, a language that is crystallizing in interactive speeches of peoples and nations, face to face to the globalization system. We intend, in this study, to approach results of small analysis of texts, collected from sites in the Internet, allowing transposing to the user an interactive communication of fast projection of information, always available for social groups. This interactivity, according to our criteria of study, allowed us to focus two issues. The first one is to make the user be aware of the informational events in the world face to global system. The second refers to the individualization of the social groups, in respect to the specific realities of its history and its culture.

Abstract: This study aims to ascertain whether the verbal agreement is a phenomenon which constitutes a variable rule, and therefore to track the linguistic and extralinguistic factors which would create such a variation. To do so, this scope restricts its scope to the spoken and the written language as it is used by speakers from the northwest of the São Paulo State. Two corpora have been used to make this research feasible, namely, one from IBILCE/UNESP, whose Portuguese title translates as 'The Portuguese spoken in the São Paulo State countryside: the constitution of an annotated database for its study', and another one consisting of pieces of writing by students at either elementary or high school levels. We pay special attention to linguistic factors such as verbal phonetic salience, formal parallelism, the position of the subject as well as to the structure of the subject, which we deem relevant for our analysis. As of extralinguistic factors, we stress the importance of the age group and also of the educational level. We conducted the quantitative analysis using the GOLDVARB-X software, the results of which lead us to figure that the verbal agreement is a variable rule created mainly by the extralinguistic factor concerning the interviewee's level of education, in either the written or in the spoken form. In both situations, the aforementioned rule applies to 85% of cases, a percentage which we deem to be high

Abstract:
The purpose of this case study was to examine the effectiveness of a technique known as re-creation on student writing abilities in ENG 104 section 95 during the spring semester of 1992. Re-creation, already used almost exclusively in England and Australia, invites a writer to divulge his or her personal interpretation of a literary text by rewriting given aspects of it. In section 95, the instructor devoted the entire range of assignments to re-creative writing tasks, using four dramatic scripts and the motion pictures that had been adapted from them as literary texts. The instructor carefully developed re-creative writing assignments and a reasonable criteria with which to grade them. He closely monitored how the students adapted to re-creative writing, and discovered that four students exemplified the main different styles of writing that emerged from re-creation. The case study does indicate that all of the twenty-one students coulddo the work that re-creation involves; some experienced only minor successes with it, but other students, including some top achievers who would probably have done well in any writing class, found broad new avenues for creative expression of their personal responses to literature.

Abstract: The geotechnical charts are important tools for professionals that deal with planning and management of physical environment. They show how a particular phenomenon behaves spatially so the user can search the information desired that provides him support to take a decision. Actually many charts present some incoherencies on the representation of data due the great amount of information that charts would have to present. Therefore it is important that these charts have a adequate representation of the physical environment in order to have a legible cartographic language for its users. Thus, the aim of this research was the accomplishment of a cartographic representation proposal for geotechnical charts from the study of representation analysis of two distinct geotechnical chart methodologies most used in Brazil: IPT - São Paulo Institute of Technological Research and EESC/USP - São Carlos Engineering School/São Paulo University.

Abstract:
AbstractSensory-motor information is linguistically encoded by action verbs. Such verbs are not only used to express action concepts and events, but they are also pervasively exploited in the linguistic representation of abstract concepts and figurative meanings. In the light of several theoretical approaches (i.e., Embodied Theories, Conceptual Metaphor Theory, Image Schema Theory), this paper analyzes the mechanisms that enable action verbs to acquire abstract meanings and that motivate the symmetries (or asymmetries) in the semantic variations of locally equivalent verbs (e.g., premere and spingere; Eng., to press and to push). The research is carried out within the IMAGACT framework and focuses on a set of four Italian action verbs encoding force (i.e., premere, spingere, tirare, and trascinare; Eng., to press, to push, to pull, and to drag). The results confirm that metaphorical extensions of action verbs are constrained by the image schemas involved in the core meaning of the verbs. Additionally, the paper shows that these image schemas are responsible for the asymmetries in the metaphorical variation of action verbs pertaining to the same semantic class (i.e., force).

"refer to related words, if he or she does not feel the entry at hand is suitable for his or her purposes. 6. Translation Problems The entries were obtained by diligent research based on primary sources, encyclope-dias, glossaries, reference works and current periodicals, which are so numerous that they cannot be listed. The translations were checked and double-checked by multi-lingual experts in the respective philosophical fields. It is, however, to be empha-sized that - in contrast to the technical languages of e.g. medicine or technical sci-ence - philosophical terminology appears particularly complex and difficult, which means that it was sometimes impossible to get all the expert opinions to agree. Thus we bear the final responsibility for the correctness of the entries provided. It is generally assumed that the user of a technical dictionary is sufficiently acquaint-ed with the term he or she is looking up. Therefore the dictionary in hand does not try to explain the terms, but rather attempts to provide equivalents in the respective languages. - Unusual terms: Like German, English technical terminology tends to include unusual words. Lack of acquaintance with the expressions should not lead to the conclusion that these concepts do not exist in English. Just as the native German speaker is not likely to be conversant with all the technical terms found in the language - which is to be explained by the vastness and versatility of natural languages - so the native English speaker is also going to be a stranger to a large number of technical terms in English. All of the terminology given in this dictionary stems from recognized sources. Where this is not the case, as the terms are either inferred or nonce-formations, the entries are marked by the symbol °. - Compounds: The translation of compounds represents a particular problem as for example Wahrheitstheorie can be translated as theory of truth or truth theory. Generally speaking, both forms are possible, but British and US preferences seem to differ frequently in this respect without following a clear principle. - Formation of abstract nouns: Frequently, abstract nouns are derived from adjectival forms. Next to the etymologically plausible suffixes we now also find suffixes the language purist might object to, e.g. logicality, logicalness. - Obsolete terms: As the dictionary does not merely include current philosophy, but tries to cover the whole range of philosophical terminology, it also contains obsolete or antiquated terms whose meaning has changed, without them being marked us such, e.g. politischer Körper body politic (Hobbes)." "phrases the adjective is generally given in its inflected form (e.g. ursprüngliches Sein instead of ursprüngliche Sein, das). As far as possible in German, gender markers are also attributed to Greek, Latin and Asian terms. Note that these do not always agree with the grammatical gender of the nouns in the languages of origin but refer to the gender attributed to the entries in German, which are generally rendered in italics (e.g. die lex naturalis) to indicate that German principles of capitalization are not complied with. In accordance with the publisher's guidelines and the fact that grammatical and nat-ural gender do not always correspond (cf. die Person referring to woman and man alike), the suffix -in is not added to the entries where the object of reference might also be female (as in Logiker). As the use of the suffix -in is not consistent, the en-tries would have tended to confuse the non-native. We considered it more important to include the specific terminology of feminist philosophy and gender studies. - Order of translations: If more than one translation is provided these occur in a weighted order, the most accurate or most frequently used form being listed first. Entries including a slash indicate ordered sets of alternatives, e.g. Grenzbegriff m • limit(ing)/boundary/marginal concept/notion would have to be read as limit(ing) or boundary or marginal concept; limit(ing) or boundary or marginal notion. The hy-phenated alternatives should be read as follows: normal/bell-shaped distribution is to." In Dict Philos Terms Germ-Eng V1, 11. Routledge, 2013. http://dx.doi.org/10.4324/9780203383308-6.

Abstract:
Background: Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women worldwide and currently ranked as the fifth leading cause of death from cancer in general. Studies have indicated that breast cancer was strongly associated with a positive family history of breast cancer. The risk of breast cancer also increased with the increasing levels of body‐mass index. This study aimed to examine the effect of obesity and family history on the risk of breast cancer. Subjects and Method: Meta analysis and systematic review was conducted by collecting published articles from Google Scholar, PubMed, Springer Link, DOAJ, and Science Direct databases. Keywords used “breast cancer” AND “risk factors” AND “BMI” OR “body mass index” AND “obesity”AND “family history” AND “cohort” AND “Asia”. The inclusion criteria were full text, using English language, using cohort study design, and reporting adjusted hazard ratio. The study population was Asian women. Intervention was obesity and family history with comparison non-obesity and no family history. The study outcome was breast cancer. The collected articles were selected by PRISMA flow chart. The quantitative data were analyzed by random effect model using Revman 5.3. Results: 6 studies fromTaiwan, Israel, Japan, Malaysia, Thailand, and Korea were selected for this study. This study showed that obesity (aHR= 1.01; 95% CI= 0.67 to 1.52; p= 0.96), with I²= 90% and family history (aHR= 1.69; 95% CI= 1.09 to 2.62; p= 0.02), with I²= 57%, were associated with breast cancer. Conclusion: Obesity and family history are associated with breast cancer. Keywords: breast cancer, obesity, family history Correspondence: Enge Surabina Ketaren.
